I actually thought I was really careful regarding both my privacy and security. I'm deep into the Apple ecosystem with both iPhone, Macbook, Apple TV and Apple watch. I see that the P7a might release soon and I am highly considering making the change beginning with my phone, but I do have several questions. When I get the brand new P7a, can I immediately install GOS or do we have to wait for new compatible versions of GOS? If so, how long does it usually take for a compatible version? With iOS I use services which I would like to mimic on GOS. I use services like icloud+, apples built-in vpn in safari, hide my email and keychain combined, imessage and facetime (both e2e). Hide my email and keychain is something I just cant live without anymore.
What do you think about running sandboxed google services on the main and only profile for someone who is very new to privacy and mainly want to barely feel the difference from a stock pixel 7 experience? As a family man i do not have the time to tinker as much as before and am looking for anything better than stock android privacy wise.
I had sandboxed google play running on a separate profile on my Pixel 7 for a few months. Unfortunately it was way too inconvenient for my usecase so I have unified it all under a single profile. You still get substantial privacy and security improvements over Stock Android due to reasons like: Google Play Store and Services being in a sandboxed state (unlike privileged state in case of Stock Android), the Storgae Scopes option, Vanadium hardening. Other factors like Wifi and Bluetooth timeouts are also a bonus over Stock OS. TL;DR: Yes, GrapheneOS is absolutely worth it even with only a main profile even with sandboxed google services.
While I don't daily use my pixel 4a, I use google services along play store. The reason why these services are a headache on normal android is their whole system access which is solved by sandboxed. I only give it internet access which is so nice and also it can't auto update which I also didn't like with normal android play services. Their sandboxed google services/play store is the REASON why I wanted to try GrapheneOS. Nice compromise that I'm OK with.
On that setup in the video, the contacts were stored on my nextlcoud server and DAVx⁵ was just handling the CalDAV/CardDAV sync to my android device. I've since moved to a self-hosted etesync server that stores my calendar, contacts, and tasks. Then sync it to my phone using the etesync app.
QUESTIONS First, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of GrapheneOS. Q1: Can you explain how to update Apps from the Aurora Store? Still does not work Im sure I'm not the only one with this issue. If you could throw some instruction our way it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Hi dear thank you for your useful video please advise how to make google pay working on GrapheneOS or is there away to make the NFC payment works? thank you
How GrapheneOS handles OS updates? Once Google/AOSP releases new securityand/or OS update, does it becomes available on the very same day? or GrapheneOS team does some modifications to the updates as well? Also, does the number of years of Security and OS updates still depend on device, or GrapheneOS? For example, 6A will get guaranteed Android version updates until at least July 2025, and security updates until at July 2027. So does that mean GrapheneOS will also stop supporting 6A after the end of supported version by Google?
No. The Graphene developers are taking the OS updates and integrate it into GrapheneOS. That is send to the phones. You always update the OS from Graphene.
This explains how the updates work and how they're tested/released by the GrapheneOS team - grapheneos.org/releases#about-the-releases. Updates/Upgrades are tested and released very quickly by the GrapheneOS team as they become available. As far as support goes, GrapheneOS supports a device up until it's End Of Life (EOL) which is when the security updates end. At this point, the device is no longer safe to use. The last post on this thread has some more details - discuss.grapheneos.org/d/739-security-updates-after-eol as well as this thread - nitter.net/GrapheneOS/status/1622560789931458561
Regarding "PIN scrambling" - I wonder if there's a way to add 2fa to unlock the phone with hardware security key like yubikey? My issue that I have is that fingerprints (and biometric as a whole) can be faked, and entering 20 pin every time to unlock phone could be tedious, and also it can be spied on. So if you have one of those small keys with nfc, they can be weared on a wrist. So that after you enter your pin - you then put in on your wrist, and nfc in key unlocks the phone?
Love your videos. They convinced me I could lose Google on my phone. Only thing I can't find a solution for is family location apps. Hope you do a video on them. Can't find any not using Google services. I use Life 360 now on a seperat profile with Google Services. Would like to change it.
hi there. i have just downloaded graphene os and it does not contain many of the features your does . such as auto off for bluetooth and wifi and numerouse otheres. i dont know why or how to change
Hi there, if you go into settings (on the owner profile if you have multiple user profiles), search for “turn off” and you should see the options show up.
Thanks! After watching a few of your videos, I started getting recommendations for Lego channels. I hate designing thumbnails, but sadly, they're one of the most important things. I figured I would start adding Lego's to make it a bit more fun for me.
Thanks! I've been able to get most of my frequently contacted friends/family over to Signal. The other's who don't want another chat app like Signal, I use SMS.
I am on Pixel 7, and there is a substantial difference using Gcam. Portrait mode is the biggest missing feature in GrapheneOS camera, and Gcam is the best in business for that. You can still achieve privacy by installing Gcam (and Google Photos if you want to seamlessly view pictures from Gcam without switching to the Gallery) and denying network permission, this will ensure Google can't collect any data from these apps about you, and you don't have to login with your account either, while still being able to benefit from their features.
Just to add to what @adityapathak5761 said, there is a difference in features between the GrapheneOS camera and Gcam. You can install Gcam on GrapheneOS and have the same features as stock Android OS - grapheneos.org/usage#google-camera. I've tested it before, it works well.
so cash app, banking apps, google messages app, and basically every app just work? now as far as messages app is concerned, i want to use the new standard called RCS. so does the sms app you talked about also have rcs or is that only in google messages app? will i lose the ability to use rcs messaging switching to graphene?
The main apps that most people note that don't work are android auto, and google pay. Everything else *generally works*. I say generally, because I haven't tested every possible app. For RCS, you need to install Google messages and the sandboxed Google Play Services. Once you do that, you'll be able to enable RCS in the app.
On my old device, you can share (via bluetooth) and use that to send selected contacts to the new phone. It's a bit laborious, but works. It's an opportunity to prune the contact book too.
Is it true that there is no Adaptive Charging on GrapheneOS? Therefore the battery should be on 100% over hours during sleep, which would decrease battery health quicker than necessary. Charging and unplugging before sleep is possible but inconvenient with 10% battery consumption per night on a Pixel
I'm having an issue after setting up a second user profile. The phone seems to take 3-5 extra seconds to load main profile and to close apps or use the home button.
Do you mean it takes an extra 3-5 seconds when switching from the second user profile to the main user profile? Is the increased time to close apps in both user profiles? I would try “end session” option by holding down the power button on the second use profile, and see if you still observe the behavior. Which device are you using?
Being a Pixel 5 owner myself, I am wondering if Graphene will offer longer support on this device than Google. That would be biggest reason to make me switch personally.
No, GrapheneOS explicitly offers support as long as device support code like firmware, kernel and vendor code is actively maintained (paraphrased from legacy devices section in FAQ). Offering longer support would have been ideal, but unfortunately compromises privacy/security due to lack of latest updates on hardware after EOL, which leaves the device vulnerable to firmware bugs which cannot be resolved by just an update to the OS and need vendor support
@@adityapathak5761 help me understand, these 3 things, firmware, kernel and vendor code are all proprietary? So, even if the community wanted to support such devices they wouldn't be able to? Does that mean hardcore Graphene users change devices every X years?
@elrisitas8508 this thread has some details - nitter.net/GrapheneOS/status/1564713697976664065?s=20&t=WAJ3Yfi9yXvRKe4sgI0OzQ "Once a device is end-of-life, there are no longer firmware, driver and other device-specific patches available. Shipping latest AOSP updates does not provide the current patch level." Google coordinates with the 3rd party vendors who's hardware they use to provide updates. Newer devices are receiving security updates for 5 years now - support.google.com/nexus/answer/4457705?hl=e. It's not that hardcore GrapheneOS users change devices every X years, it's that no one should use a device that is no longer receiving security updates. Once a device reaches EOL (regardless of the OS), it should no longer be used.
Mr. Side of Burritos, I have long had an underlying wonder about what is the most privacy oriented bank? Crazy statement I understand. But my current bank has changes coming in their policy will not put up with so it’s time for me to do some research for another. I was wondering if you or anyone else thinks about this? And if anyone has insight, I’m all ears. Thanks!
I don't know which country you're in, but I don't expect any privacy with my bank in the US. When it comes to $ and the IRS, I just assume everything is known. Perhaps someone else may know better places, but if you're looking for privacy, check out prepaid cards, cash, or Monero.

Hey since signal is moving away from sms I switched to the built in graphene app. Everything is green and the other day I texted someone and their contact image the circle switched from green to grey. Could this mean they also use graphene OS? It's only happened to this one contact out of like 30 others.
I've never heard of it before. It looks like a service all parties would need to sign up for to use, and they don't seem to have anywhere near the reputation something like Signal does. The interface also looks to try to copy the WhatsApp style. I personally would not recommend it just based off a first look.
Does vanadium work with a yubikey? When I tried it I don't think it worked with one it's been awhile since I tried though. Thinking about going back to grapheneos, and forgetting about Android auto.
Can Graphene OS disable cellular connectivity so that your phone won't ping any cellular base station (even without SIM)? If not, are there apps which can do this?
Here's a list of the supported devices - grapheneos.org/faq#supported-devices But you can use a ChromeOS for the installation - grapheneos.org/install/web#prerequisites
I've just installed GrapheneOS but for some reason I cannot search for Apps on Aurora store. Searching for any apps returns no results. I've tried uninstalling aurora store, enabling 'Generate GSF ID locally on device' and even factory resetting the phone but I still cannot search. I know I can just download the APK or go through google but this doesn't seem to be a common issue. Do you have any idea how I can fix this? Thanks heaps!
I have some problems with an app it has some bugs since im using grapheneos but worked great on my samsung with android 13 and it doesnt need play services, what can be problem?
I would steer clear of the 5 as it will be EOL October 2023. If your budget permits, look for a 6a. If you spend $100 on a 5 that will last for 6 months vs. a 6a you spend $400 that will last 3.5 years. The upfront cost is more, but the yearly cost on the 6a is lower than a 5. (I made the $ up just for this example).
That's a tough question to answer as there's a ton of variables that go into it. How old is the device, what apps are installed, etc. For me, it lasts longer than I need, but less than I want. There are a few threads on discuss.grapheneos.org that talk about battery life. ex. discuss.grapheneos.org/?q=battery%20life
Hmm, that's odd. Are you using a physical SIM? Did you use the stock OS before installing GrapheneOS? Did that work for calls and texts? Does the cell service show as connected?
@@sideofburritos I updated the phone via wifi and then went through the install. Perfect at that point. When I put the physical sim in, it shows the network, but says it is temporary unavailable. I bought the 7 pro specifically for this operating system. Wish I could find local help, but that is hard as most people using the OS don't want to be found.
@@scottbrewton2214 This page has some good troubleshooting information, I would start there and see if that helps - grapheneos.org/usage#carrier-functionality
Yea, I really wish that worked, since my vehicle supports it. I've tried a few random Android Auto devices off Amazon out of curiosity. I didn't think they would work, and they didn't. You essentially would need a standalone unit (basically another phone) that you would wirelessly tether to your GrapheneOS phone for internet access, but I haven't missed it enough to try that.
Hello and thanks for your work. I haven't found any information about it, but it seems that I can't grant root permissions to Grapheneos, is that correct? Doesn't accept Magisk?
Signal is not secure! Build your own xmpp server like ejabbed or Matrix! I have both :D These 2 solutions are brilliant but is not handy for everybody. Use Session instead Signal!
If you can provide some sources regarding your claims, I would be happy to reply. It's a lot of effort to respond to claims that don't have any technical details with sources saying X isn't secure and use Y instead.
@@sideofburritos Hello, maybe I was too rough but the idea is simple: it is also based on your contacts (very bad idea) and honestly even with the end to end famous secure algorithm behind, maybe the server owners might decrypt your keys if the really want to, who knows. There are some tutorials how to deploy your own signal server but are old which let me understand that is not available anymore, so not so open anymore... Ok, compared with whatsapp and telegram is better but I would avoid it because a better solution is to have your own server (on prem) like I said, either matrix or ejabberd like I have (both closed, no federation). I have mentioned Session, well seems like is more secure since the traffic is passed over the loki network among so many protected nodes (at least Rob Braxman said that). if you can't deploy a personal server, I personally would go with session instead. I will change my thoughts about signal only when a clear procedure to deploy a server will become available. This is just a general opinion, nothing more. Maybe I am wrong, this is what I know based on my experience. And yes, sorry for my initial comment, it was too rough. Thank you.

Sadly I had to buy GOOGLE'S Pixel 7a just to install GrapheneOS on it. Because they only support Pixel phones(all that OEM unlocking nonsense). Hopefully Graphene is going to be available on other phone brands in the future(Samsung, Sony, Motorola, etc.), the transition shouldn't be too hard for them - A budget and a mid-high level smartphone would be enough.
Graphene OS seems like a lot of effort for nothing. I can get the same effect and experience on my pixel 6 simply by making small changes in settings and using only Google apps. My phone is pretty clean and low key.
It's such a shame that you can use it only on Pixel devices. I am using a Nothing Phone(1) rn and I don't want to buy a new phone. It seems like there isn't even an office release of LineageOS or something similar. From what I can tell the Nothing Phone(1) comes with an unlockable bootloader and a lot of transparency....so I really don't understand why there is no good privacy focused OS for this awesome Phone yet.
@@adityapathak5761 thank you for your answer my friend. Any step towards privacy is better than none.
Yes it's worth it. Just be aware if you use Android auto that won't work in grapheneos, it's too ingrained with Android.
@@homie4235 yep knew that! Thanks
Finally a full video of graphene os 😂😂😂 thanks sir
Local contacts only? That's an interesting choice - How secure is davx5?
On that setup in the video, the contacts were stored on my nextlcoud server and DAVx⁵ was just handling the CalDAV/CardDAV sync to my android device. I've since moved to a self-hosted etesync server that stores my calendar, contacts, and tasks. Then sync it to my phone using the etesync app.
QUESTIONS
First, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of GrapheneOS.
Q1: Can you explain how to update Apps from the Aurora Store? Is there any way you get push notifications for apps when they are updated?
Q2: How do GrapheneOS Security updates work and how often are they pushed out? Especially concerning Critical Exploits?
Thank you once again!

I'm finally upgrading to GrapheneOS after a lot of bellyaching about the industry standard spying. Thanks for the great intro, preview and a couple of very useful security enhancing tips. I wanted to see the GrapheneOS user interface before taking my droid to Anchorhead to have its memory erased (installing GrapheneOS). It's a shame that just after this video was uploaded, Signal decided to no longer encrypt text messages. Any recommendation for a replacement encrypted text app?
where did you find out signal doesnt encrypt messages anymore
@@handsomesquidward8240 - The Signal app has been warning for approximately the last month that Signal would no longer be providing SMS services. Presumably, the only way to use Signal will be encrypted, between Signal users. I liked having Signal as my default messaging app for encrypted messages when available and unencrypted messages for everyone else, but now I use the default GrapheneOS messaging app as my default for SMS and I still have signal which works as an encrypted messaging app... and secure calls even though I seldom use that awesome feature.
@@handsomesquidward8240 They stopped supporting SMS/MMS messaging and now it's only signal to signal messages. I'm not sure yet of another SMS/MMS app that encrypts so if anyone has any rec's please lmk.

Picked up a Pixel 7, using GrapheneOS and haven't looked back - Less Google in my Life.
Hi Josh, I watched again your overview of the Graphene os. So I have a comment and a question. I have read the the OS guide I find that is not written for the lay person "difficult to understand" So my question. In you video you mentioned the "Files" app you use to transfer files to a usb. I have been trying to transfer my vids and pics to a stick or to my desktop for months. No luck. I have allowed usb to be acknowledge when unlocked. Still does not work Im sure I'm not the only one with this issue. If you could throw some instruction our way it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Can you make a video about transfering whole system settings and profiles from one graphene pixel to another one? Thanks
Can you do a video on how to use two pixels to shield your phone from the cellular network?
Hi dear thank you for your useful video please advise how to make google pay working on GrapheneOS or is there away to make the NFC payment works? thank you
Thanks for the overview. I'm considering switching my Pixel 6 over to GrapheneOS .

Updates are coming very frequently and they deliver the Androids fast. Live time is the same as Android because of the security updates.
@@mrcvry so is it that OS upgrade are handled by Graphene and security ones are by Google itself as device manufacturer?
I'm curious too

Can you please tell me that if there is any difference between camera quality of pixel 7 pro running graphene os and stock os

Is the camera app as good / normal as the original pixel android? Will it have different photo quality?
I’m on the fence. On an iPhone 12 Pro Max and looking at Pixel 7 on sale $300 off at BestBuy.
Question. How would I transfer my contacts over to a new device with a fresh install of GrapheneOS?
On my old device, you can share (via bluetooth) and use that to send selected contacts to the new phone. It's a bit laborious, but works. It's an opportunity to prune the contact book too.
Is it true that there is no Adaptive Charging on GrapheneOS?
Therefore the battery should be on 100% over hours during sleep, which would decrease battery health quicker than necessary.
Charging and unplugging before sleep is possible but inconvenient with 10% battery consumption per night on a Pixel
How in the world do we add custom commands/scripts???
Also: will Lyft app work on Graphene Os?

@elrisitas8508 this thread has some details - nitter.net/GrapheneOS/status/1564713697976664065?s=20&t=WAJ3Yfi9yXvRKe4sgI0OzQ
"Once a device is end-of-life, there are no longer firmware, driver and other device-specific patches available. Shipping latest AOSP updates does not provide the current patch level."
Google coordinates with the 3rd party vendors who's hardware they use to provide updates.

I've never heard of it before. It looks like a service all parties would need to sign up for to use, and they don't seem to have anywhere near the reputation something like Signal does. The interface also looks to try to copy the WhatsApp style.

Is a pixel 5 good to use for graphene os since its not recommended but supported because future updates ?
I would steer clear of the 5 as it will be EOL October 2023. If your budget permits, look for a 6a. If you spend $100 on a 5 that will last for 6 months vs. a 6a you spend $400 that will last 3.5 years. The upfront cost is more, but the yearly cost on the 6a is lower than a 5. (I made the $ up just for this example).
How long does the battery of the Pixel 6a last? How high is the battery consumption in idle mode?
That's a tough question to answer as there's a ton of variables that go into it. How old is the device, what apps are installed, etc. For me, it lasts longer than I need, but less than I want. There are a few threads on discuss.grapheneos.org that talk about battery life.
ex. discuss.grapheneos.org/?q=battery%20life
I performed the install per your video. Install was smooth, but was not able to get it to make calls or text.
I just did my 6A and simply put in my SIM card and magic happens. Assuming yours won't be as simple of a fix.
Thank you.
