    Our ram Samson has become aggressive, dangerous & won't let us get near our ewes (female sheep). Since the ground is frozen, we can't build him a separate pasture until summer. In the meantime, we're going to repurpose an old grain feeder so that we can feed the sheep without the risk of being rammed & possibly hurt. Plus, we're taking a trip to town for more building supplies for our cabin addition. Thanks for joining us for another video on our Alaskan homestead!

    SAUERKRAUT:
    2 heads of cabbage (any color), rinsed & sliced thinly
    2 carrots peeled & grated
    1 small onions, peeled & diced
    2 TBS fresh oregano, rinsed & diced
    2 TBS of a good salt, I use sea salt
    6. Clean 1/2 gallon jar, with lid
    Big stock pot
    1 Coffee filter or tea towel. Just something to cover the jars during fermentation to keep bugs out!
    A fermenting weight
    How to make it:
    1. Rinse, peel and shred, grade or dice all your veggies & oregano. Reserve 3-4 of the outer cabbage leaves for later...
    2. Mix all the ingredients together in a large stock pot.
    3. Add your 2 TBS of salt & massage the mixture REALLY well. You really want to make sure that salt is well incorporated throughout so that it draws the moisture out. This is where your brine comes from. :)
    4. Let it rest covered on the counter for 30 min to an hour.
    5. Pack your jars (tightly). Really shove that cabbage mixture down! All of the mixture should make a 1/2 gallon of sauerkraut. If it doesn't, you're not packing your jars tight enough!
    6. Using the reserved cabbage leaves, place them over the mixture as a "cover" pushing & ensuring the mixture is COMPLETELY submerged under the brine. Tuck those leaves down good on the sides to keep the mixture from rising up.
    7. Remove any floaters that are not submerged or they might grow mold.
    8. Add your fermenting weight on top as a secondary assurance to keep everything submerged during fermentation.
    9. Add the coffee filter on top & just set the lid on top (don't screw it down) the gases need to be able to escape during fermentation or you could have a mess on your hands. I set the jar lid on top loosely as it helps keep the smell of the fermenting onions IN the jar instead of throughout your house!
    10. Date your jar, place it on a plate or pyrex dish just in case there's any leakage/spill over during fermentation & place them in a room temp area for at least 7-14 days. We like our sauerkraut really tangy...so I allow mine to ferment on the counter for 3 wks!
    11. Once the fermentation is done, remove the weight & large cabbage leaves. Place a lid tightly on your jar & place it in the fridge immediately.

      What ever happens with Kellen, he will never forget his Alaska family. Tina, you have given so much to this precious boy, especially the gift of a one on one education. It’s so important to master the basics which will enable him to be at, or exceed grade level, should he ever have to return to public school. I’m in awe of you and your family. ❤️

    Why don’t you sell Sampson before someone namely you or the kids get hurt. You can always replace the ram when you need one. No one needs to put up with a mean animal. I had a neighbor who was killed by a mean bull. Everyone told her to get rid of him but she had a million and one excuses why she couldn’t, shouldn’t or wouldn’t. Well he ended up dead also so people could get into the corral to remove her body which he was guarding. These animals that are nice and then turn mean usually have a brain injury or tumor etc. it is serious to have a mean animal when you could be feeding a nice one. You have a lovely beautiful home and land. You all enjoy it so much and it is a pleasure to watch your videos. Have a great day.

      With many year of experience, I can say that Tame Ram's are dangerous. We never ever would even consider taming one. Samson is only protecting his ladies. Since he is tame he views his human counterparts as competition, ie another competing Ram. They will never get this out of him. Samson will not like being separated and he will tare up anything they put up to contain him. It better be strong enough to contain a Rodeo Bull. Raised Boer goats and llama's for many years as well, and again we never tamed our intact males for good reason, and never had a issue. I know the excuses why people like to tame their Ram's and I understand, but believe me it's NOT worth the risk. We owned retraining equipment for these times we needed to trim toenails and deworming and innoculations. I no it's not always cost effective for small operations, but Emergency Rooms are expensive. We took no chances.

    • @HomeFreeAlaska
      @HomeFreeAlaska  5 місяців тому +2

      He’ll get his own pin, problem solved. He’s a ram, not a bull. Big difference.

    • @HomeFreeAlaska
      @HomeFreeAlaska  5 місяців тому +4

      This is not true. Sheep farmers commonly separated their rams from the ewes. Have you owned sheep? We’ve owned sheep and cows. This isn’t our first rodeo. Now that Samson has turned aggressive (whatever the reason), we’ll handle him accordingly. He was bought to be our breeder & that’s exactly what he’ll be.

      @@HomeFreeAlaska I understand your reasoning. I appreciate your choice. Just be careful. I don't have any sheep experience, but I do have goat and cow experience. Intact males are so unpredictable. Stay safe. I ❤ your content. BTW, have you done any incubation projects. Last year was our first. Two different chicken breeds ~ pure bred Black Australorps and Golden Comet/White Leghorn crosses, along with Khaki Campbell ducks. I can't wait for incubation season and goat kidding season. My dad is 77, and mom just turned 80. I'm 58. My mom has dementia, but besides for the ravages of this disease, she is fit and doesn't weight 100 lbs at about 5'5. This comment is response to referring to someone in their 60's, as elderly. Age happens to us all, if we are lucky enough, no blessed enough. Many aren't. The key is to stay active and in shape. I went I a Wendy's the other day, and was stunned to see their Senior discounts started in at 55? 50 something. I'm shocked by how much I've enjoyed the few episodes I've been able to watch this morning. Very educational and entertaining!

    • @HomeFreeAlaska
      @HomeFreeAlaska  Місяць тому +1

      Hi Lolita! Yes, age is just a number and how someone feels depends on so many factors. “Elderly” is just a term to describe the age/stage someone is in their life, like “teenager,” “middle aged,” etc., I can’t believe how many people got so upset about the term elderly. It is not an insult. There are many people that are elderly, doing more things physically than I can do at 42! Kellen is doing great, enjoying summer break in VA!🫶🏻 Thanks for subbing & checking us out. Take care!

    Those rams! It seems they always get mean, or you can't trust them. My daughter and son-in-law raise sheep as a side income along with farming and cattle ranching. They have a flock of about 70 ewes and a few rams. They keep the ewes and rams separated when it isn't breeding season. My daughter will no longer go into the ram pen and feed the rams. They will still try to ram my 6'4" son-in-law. They are about done with lambing now. The lambs sure are cute! My little granddaughter loves to take me out to the barn to see the lambs. She is 3 years old and will go out with her daddy while he is out there and will play with the bottle lambs for a long time. Thank you for another enjoyable video. You do a great job on them. Your ram reminds me of Arnold a neutered merino ram who we kept as a very efficient lawn mower. Here in Australia we had an orange orchard that relied on water from the Murrumbidgee River system as the area relied on irrigation. We had a channel running behind our property and my nuns band often went down to check on the water height.. one day he returned soaking wet and muttering about killing the lawn mower. I burst out laughing. He had forgotten Arnold was loose in the orchard that day and had butted him into the channel. I miss that silly old sheep.

    Tina, this is such heart-warning content and you are so talented. This family content has got to be some of the best on UA-cam with “do anything Joe”, “big-hearted Parker”, “super Kellen”, the wonderfully trained dogs, the cats and the rest of the animals. Even the bird feeder content!
    I fully understand the wind and lipgloss problem which made me laugh. But when you picked up Ollie and Joe put him in the back and I saw Ollie smile with joy, that moment along with the music brought tears to my eyes. Oh my lord❤

      Had him ever since.☺️ So he lived with us up until 2022…he then went to live with Lexxy. He was always kind of “her” dog as he slept with her every night etc., they had a special bond. So we’re family to Ollie for sure.❤️❤️

    Great video! Your place is so beautiful! Love seeing your outtakes at the end they were so funny. Also found it funny that a person in their 60's is "elderly". My husband and I are there and we split and stack our own firewood, have flower beds all the way around our yard to maintain, have 2 active dogs. Your perspective will change the closer you get to that age, trust me! I remember when I thought my grandma was "old" and I have now surpassed her in age she passed at 62.
