Funny thing, if something like that happened for real, would a criminal have a chance to get set free after this? I'm imagining the "victim" in huge quotes, is "female" in even bigger quotes. The more I think about how they're glossing over the actual crime instead of highlighting how "awful men are" the more I think the guy was probably less of an aggressor or probably innocent.
Cause we know how these crazies are with the idea of innocent men and how they think women are most affected when a woman lying could be a plausible factor.

A Female appears out of nowhere and She-Hulk attacks her. The female just slams her fist through She Hulks chest ripping her apart as she falls down she asks why? The Female just looks at her and said because I am a real woman and you are just a weak little bully that likes to pick on the weak and call it Feminist victimhood. As the SheHulk hears that she dies knowing she fucked up.

Assaulting a police officer can carry a sentence of up to 25 years

You're absolutely right about the revenge stories. I started writing revenge stories in my early teens just to get some things off my chest, but eventually I liked writing so much that I decided to attempt to master it. Through my attempts, I've come to learn about many things that have showed me better ways to live. It became therapy which improved both my life and writing considerably. It's a shame that the writers at Marvel haven't taken that journey yet. They write with more angst than I did at 13.

This comic is like "It's not the size: it's what you do with it" except for incompetence and bad storytelling. It's fascinating how the artist/author had only a single page to tell their story, and yet managed to _concentrate_ the ineptitude that I'm sure would have been distributed more evenly if they'd been writing a longer story. Every single panel has either something outright wrong with it, something profoundly stupid, or both.
Panel #1: Okay, I might not be up on my She-Hulk lore, but I thought she was a lawyer with a private practice (ie, she doesn't work for the federal/state government). Why is she suddenly a prosecutor in a criminal case? The only capacity she should be serving in a criminal case is as a defense attorney, and if she were the representative for the plaintiff in a civil case then the only thing she'd be able to 'get' for her client is compensation for damages. You can't sue someone so hard they go to prison. Also, 18 months is "better than nothing"? That man is now not only a felon, but likely also a registered sex offender. Both of those will follow him for the rest of his life. He is not getting off easy.
Panel #2: This is probably the least-incompetent panel of them all by virtue of basically nothing happening. All I'll say is that the way they drew it, it looks like there's a floodlight blasting through their windows directly onto the bed. Maybe draw your curtains and you'll sleep better, you dolts.
Panel #3: The hell are you on about, Jen? How does the amount of time he employed her matter? Is the problem that she worked for him for less time than he was sentenced to in prison? Would it have been better if he'd done this the first week of her employment? And "cleaning up his messes"? Was she his maid/cleaning lady? If so, that's a weird way to say that, but I'm also wondering why that's relevant. Is Jen implying that if the lady's job had been more prestigious, that would have somehow made the 18 month sentence more palatable? Is there some financial/social threshold beyond which Jen would have no longer cared about what happened to this woman?
Panel #4&5: Okay, once again, I'm not exactly up on my She-Hulk lore, but wasn't one of the big distinctions she had from her cousin the fact that despite having her mental faculties intact, she could never entirely shed the appearance of her hulk-state? But hey, maybe she has the ability to turn back now for some reason...but shouldn't people still know that Jennifer Walters and She-Hulk are the same person from all that time _before_ getting this ability to transform?
Panel #6: Nothing too much to see here, though I'm baffled as to why the artist didn't think to make the guy look even remotely unsympathetic. All it would have taken is having a small smile on his face to imply that A) he was satisfied with the outcome of the case and B) the punishment really _was_ a hell of a lot less severe than you'd have expected for whatever crime he committed. But then again, that would require the artist/writer to understand that we don't automatically assume this guy deserves everything about to happen because of what they've shown us thus far. Frankly, I'm just impressed they even thought to show that he has a seatbelt on.
    Panel #7: Hoo-boy...here we go.
Panel #8: Wow. That's...okay, that's insane. She just stiff-arm stopped a van going at speeds sufficient to send the rear wheels up a solid thirty degrees. They aren't on a highway, so in the US that means the van is probably going upwards of 50mph (for a 45 zone) and downwards of 30mph (for a 25 zone), so we'll meet halfway at 40mph. Cars are built specifically to prolong deceleration in the event of an otherwise absolute and immediate stop, so it's not quite as if she's making that van go from 40 to 0 in a heartbeat, but...that still isn't good for the people inside. Like, at all. The guy in the back especially so, since he's wearing a two-point seat belt (there's a reason why almost every modern seat belt is three-point) and sitting sideways.
Panel #9: Good grief, this panel...let's start with the driver. Did they just assume that an absence of blood would make us assume that he's clearly 100% fine and just taking a nap? Because holy shit, that man needs to go to a hospital, _now_ . The fact alone that he's been knocked unconscious is an enormous cause for concern, and that's before we look at how badly hurt every other part of his body might be from Jen doing her level best to drive the steering column through his torso.
The prisoner is apparently fine, I guess. No need to check him for internal injuries. But putting aside the creepy insanity of this entire scenario...Jen is going to prison, right? And definitely getting disbarred? She doesn't have a secret identity, and what she just did was _holy_ _shit_ levels of illegal. Hell, even if we pretend for a moment that Jen could somehow have been a prosecutor in a criminal trial, she just made that 18 month sentence the most easily-appealed verdict on the planet. That lady is probably going to jail, too, assuming she attacks the guy like the comic seems to think we would believe is the morally just thing to do.
It's just...almost every component of this has problems, and collectively they form an even _bigger_ problem. How does anyone construct this and say 'Yes, this is a product of marketable quality and I am proud to have made it'?

Well I actually like revenge stories like the Crow, John Wick, Millennium Trilogy. But it takes a very particular kind of story and characters to do it right. I think they would be considered thrillers? The villains are typically excessively evil, crime bosses, or something like that. Often times stereotypical so. They usually sit in a position that makes them seem untouchable by the law. Certainly not some skinny criminal already heading to prison. Also the good guys are usually not all good which is why they can justify revenge, and the wrong that was committed against them is always personal.

    • @junichiroyamashita
      @junichiroyamashita 4 роки тому +2

Well ,Millennium Trilogy is a completely different can of worm from the other two,the distinction of right and wrong is nuanced, even though the villains did effectively cruel and villanous things. More than Justice vs Criminal is a story about Person vs Person. The first two have a backstory that acts more as a justification to see a revenge story, the last one is much more complex.

That's not what JSG meant by revenge stories. When feminists write revenge stories, it's always about woman empowerment and how men are evil. A regular revenge story would be The Punisher, or John Wick like you mentioned. You can tell how a story will end up depending on who's writing it. If you put a feminist or SJW behind it, expect to find a lot of political and "destroy the patriarchy" drivel.

To be fair, James O'Barr wrote 'The Crow' as, essentially, a revenge fantasy - as I understand it, his girlfriend got brutally killed by some street thugs, so he created the Crow concept and character as a way of working out his pain - and that wound up working pretty well. They CAN work. That being said, yeah, this is obviously BS on any number of levels, and is not in any way something that the established character of She-Hulk (as opposed to this ersatz version) would do.

The final panel actually does a great job of showing the disparity between fantasy and reality--particularly when it comes to power and empowerment. She-Hulk, a fictional and impossible embodiment of power tells a man that he should be afraid of a woman he victimized. Said woman represents reality--someone who is theoretically being empowered by the "heroine". But even with the guy cuffed (and somehow not unconscious or dead after the vehicle he was in got absolutely wrecked), what is she going to do? The implication is that the woman is going to take things into her own hands; She-Hulk will preside over this miscarriage of justice, but she won't intervene. (Doing so would take "power" away from the woman and make She-Hulk a liar regarding who the man should be afraid of.)
So we have a man who has committed a very aggressive criminal act--one that deserves this level of retaliation--which means he had the physical ability and mental brokenness to inflict great harm on this woman. He is more than likely capable of defending himself and harming the victim again. Maybe we're to believe that She-Hulk is going to take him to a warehouse, strap him down, and give the woman an assortment of torture devices to use...but that's a pretty sloppy and ridiculous version of empowerment.
As-is, a presumably violent criminal with his hands cuffed in front of him, is going to be facing off against a woman he has already harmed and who does not have a history of violence. The guy is scared of the fictionally powerful female character, not the normal, real woman he victimized. If She-Hulk is stupid enough to leave those two alone, things probably aren't going to go well for the woman, even if she is now capable of raw violence because of the rage she feels.
To be fair, the same could be said if it was a man facing his assailant. Unless you give the victim a significant advantage, history is more than likely going to repeat itself. A criminal already has the mental frame of mind for violence--they might even relish it. Most healthy people, even those with emotional scars, will have to surmount a significant obstacle to inflict harm on another human--particularly if they aren't in the heat of the moment. It doesn't take much physical strength to pull a trigger, but to get to the place mentally that you can embrace injuring or killing someone without immediate provocation (fight or flight) requires either extensive training or a shattered psyche.
For those reasons, it's almost laughable. A smirking symbol of fantastic (as in "fantasy-like") power is telling a legitimately violent and capable criminal he should be afraid of his victim, who in this situation has no legitimate 'power' whatsoever. It's a stark contrast that takes away the perceived empowerment that some people seem to think fictional heroes/heroines are capable of bestowing upon their readers/viewers. (Inspiration, introspection? Yes. Genuine empowerment? No.) Most media tries to avoid this juxtaposition to keep absurdity out of the equation...but this 'comic' puts it at the forefront.
While the subject matter this whole scenario is based on is very serious, very real, and does destroy lives, the way it is presented is almost comical--complete with a punchline in the final panel.
...So I guess in a way, this is indeed a legitimate comic...worthy of a full-page spread in the Sunday funnies. (Though admittedly that's a bit of a slight against comics like Calvin and Hobbes, Peanuts, Gar-Field, etc.., that often provide gentle insight and genuine laughs.)

Wow not only is she taking the law into her own hands and doing vigilantism (something Jen Walters hasn't engaged in aside from legitimately bad decisions that were not shown as a good thing), but she is committing several major felonies AS A LAWYER. That means she's putting herself above the law in many ways and thinking she's more moral than a jury or a judge. Even Daredevil would rarely be this heartless, right? And that's if he can tell the perp is lying about their innocence. Jen has no such claim to knowledge about the original events.
On top of that, she is portrayed as the prosecutor in the case. She won the case but got a light sentence and in a story about a hero, that means she failed or at best got a pyrrhic victory. To then go and get revenge, egg on her own client to take vengeance and personal recrimination, all with a smug smile after injuring or killing innocent police officers is the most villainous and least heroic I have ever seen Jen walters. And this comes from a big fan of her short comic run in the aughts. Disgusting. How could a lawyer do that and sleep at night?

Honestly it’s sad when even a story like this could easily be reworked, have a better message, and be more in character for all of them, while having a more positive effect on the author and reader’s than whatever this is.
It could be some dark, stormy night where she’s beating the ever loving shit out of him, with flash backs in between the blows of what he’s done to her, and of how she finally got the courage to turn the tables on his ass. And as she’s beating him to death, She Hulk walks up behind her and puts a hand on her shoulder and tells her to stop, he’s getting what he deserves soon, and how this will only make her life worse once the adrenaline runs off. She stares at him, sees how pathetic he is, and pulls away and starts crying as She Hulk comforts her and lets her know it’s going to be all right now. The worst is finally over.
Flash forward to the sentencing, he gets the 18 Months, she distresses but her lawyer calms her and lets her know exactly how well they treat his kind in jail, and it ends with her smiling with the satisfaction that while he may have soiled her past, his future is as fucked as she was before, while hers is open for who knows what.
Short, still a lot of context missing, but easy enough to fit on a page like this was, and with a lot better message and lot less illegal activity.
