At age 13, I heard Zappa music for the first time on a cassette player in the car of a friend's brother. It was Muffin Man playing from album Bongo Fury. I still remember vividly this moment. I'm now 60 and Frank is my favorite composer/performer. He's a genius.
Frank is a deep rabbit hole. Incredible guitarist, composer, and band leader. You have my blessing to explore any and all of the about 60 albums FZ put out before his untimely death from cancer.
Deep indeed. There are 122 official albums: 62 were released during Zappa's lifetime, 60 after 1993. That's not counting the 100s of bootlegs. You'll never run out of Zappa material. Do you take suggestions via the comments? For a steep contrast in styles, you may want to check out the instrumental "Blessed Relief" from the album Grand Wazoo. It's a whole different side of this composer, one of several dozen types of music he wrote.
That's Adrian Belew playing the first guitar solo! He's also an amazing musician that went on to play with King Crimson in the early 80's through the early 2000's. Great guitarist.
Adrian Belew also has a large number of solo albums, plus his output with his own bands The Bears and the Adrian Belew Power Trio, all worth exploring. As is his work with David Bowie, Talking Heads, and King Crimson.
Going to see Belew play in 3 weeks, super excited. Saw him with King Crimson back in the day, looking forward to his newest incarnation playing with Jerry Harrison from Talking Heads.
@@jimp4666 cool! I saw him three times with KC, three times with the power trio, and two solo shows, one acoustic. He’s very approachable. After one show he autographed my arm. (I have a tattoo of the knot design from the Discipline album.)
This is just the Last part of the song...check out the studio version (which happens to also be live) from the album called Bongo Fury where he shreds literally from beginning to end and he doesn't have another guitarist on that one. I saw him on THAT tour playing THAT song with that band and it was awe inspiring. Frank was an absolute giant, may he RIP.
Frank's unique vocals and offbeat sense of humor were icing on his musically intricate and complex cake. He was well respected by his peers. Incredibly intelligent. He was to music what George Carlin was to comedy.
I listened to Zappa endlessly in the 70's. I don't even know where to tell you to start. So much good shit from him. Sad when he died. His son Dweezle continues his father's legacy. Tours as, Zappa does Zappa!
If this one gave you goosebumps you are in for a treat. Zappa is the gift that keeps on giving. Don't let the goofiness fool you. Dude was a legitimate musical genius in my opinion.
There's a great documentary film about his life that came out a couple of years ago that feature mostly clips that have never been seen publicly. Very interesting guy. He was a perfectionist, so some people found him difficult to work with, but his band was always full of spectacular musicians. Steve Vai, who you may have heard by now on your musical journey, got his start transcribing music for Frank, who eventually let Vai join the band. So a lot of Steve's musical sensibilities were learned and honed by his time with Zappa.
Frank Zappa was lot of things. Very talented, very very hard working. But he was a composer top of the list, so when he solos, he has a lot of music knowledge at his fingertips. He released 3 whole albums of just guitar solos, called Shut Up an Play Your Guitar and similar. His songs were very structured but set up to have improvisation sections, and he always had a great band to go with him.
I saw Frank at least a dozen times starting in 1971. I never missed a concert when he toured. Without a doubt, every concert was memorable, and he never disappointed. His Halloween concerts were legendary.
band name: frank zappa and the mothers of invention. later in his career he got very deeply into jazz. was lucky enough to see him a few times, but his jazz ability/versititliy was mind-blowing
I hope you have made a cursory study of Frank in the year since your video. My wife and I saw him on our honeymoon in 1978. He not only wrote insane music, he introduced us to a ton of great musicians from his bands. He mentions Adrien Belew in this lineup. Adrian went on to play with King Crimson, David Bowie, and Talking Heads to name a few.
As rock fans we were lucky to get Zappa! He's a musical savant, that wrote symphonies but loved rock music. That's without the amazing lyrics that are absolutely hysterical at times, dark at times, sexual most of the time and extraordinary all the time. Take a deep breath first, then slowly explore Frank "Fuckin" Zappa. Absolutely one of a kind!
Zappa is a legend. He has so many versions of each song, it can be a little hit or miss finding the one you heard. City of tiny lights, don't eat the yellow snow, Dynamo hum, titties and beer, and cosmic debris are some of my favorites.
Frank is my favorite musician. He released a series of albums called guitar. And he wrote backing tracks to guitar solos recorded during live shows. I love city of tiny lites, uncle Remus, black napkins, and so many more. If you want his greatest guitar solo seek out watermelon in Easter hay! Frank is a true American composer, he wrote the music for every member in the band for every song.
Polo is my favorite reaction platform. I've watched every Harry Mack with him and have learned a lot about the history of rap music. I have seen Zappa numerous times since I was 17 years old. I have recently seen the Zappa Band a few times as they play at the Baked Potato in Hollywood with the original 80's musicians. It is a small venue (bar) and the musicians are close and friendly. It is like listening to Zappa music in your living room- no kidding! They are amazing!!!!!! Thanks Polo for this reaction. I was wondering when you would get around to Zappa. Peace!~
Wow sir, this brings back such amazing memories of my dad. Who introduced us to all the greats. Thanks for taking me down warm memory lane. Keep up your amazing reviews.
If you ever saw the album cover from "Man From Utopia" , it has a caricature of Frank, as a muscle bound monster crushing his guitar neck while on stage, and reverse side shows a view from his back where he's actually a machine. If you want another great song, look for "Bamboozled by love" live, on the album "Tinsel Town Rebellion", where he has Ike Willis on Vocals, and Denny Walley doing some wicked slide guitar work as well.
Frank Zappa is one of the deepest rabbit holes you could ever go down. I have been listening to him since the early 70’s and today have well over 100 Zappa albums in my collection (and I’m missing a few). Good luck!! 👍
Polo, you are KILLING the reactions dude! Tool, Opeth, Zeppelin, Primus.. and now the man himself, Mr Frank Zappa. I've NEVER seen another reaction channel go near his stuff lol.. especially with such an open mind. Zappa is... well, Zappa lol. He's legit one of the best guitarists who ever lived, as well as a composer and genuine musical genius. Not all his stuff is comprehensible to mere mortals like us lol, but a lot of it is, and it sounds like nothing else. Some other tracks you NEED to check out are: Dancing Shoes, Joe's Garage, Bobby Brown Goes Down, Valley Girls and the due of Dont Eat The Yellow Snow + Nanook Rubs It In (these must be listened as a pair). Zappa is probably the deepest of deep rabbit holes. Welcome lol...
Glad to see a Zappa reaction. He's an amazing artist, and well worth a deeper dive. Recommended tracks would have to include WATERMELONS IN EASTER HAY, MONTANA, PEACHES EN REGALIA, INCA ROADS, and MY GUITAR WANTS TO KILL YOUR MAMA. Hope to see more Frank on the channel
Zappa always had great musicians in his band: The Mothers of Invention. Zappa was at the forefront of Rock/Jazz fusion along with artists like Miles Davis. Miles approached the fusion from the Jazz perspective, Zappa more from the Rock perspective. For Zappa newbies to get a taste of his outstanding bands (a revolving door of excellence, much like Miles' bands), I STRONGLY suggest Inca Roads, this live version: ua-cam.com/video/wqp71DOJ3aY/v-deo.html
Watermelon in Easter Hay Already suggested but this is his most melodic solo Black Napkins off Zoot Allures Or live version from Mike Douglas show Willie the Pimp or anything off Hot Rats ( peaches en regalia is my personal favorite ) Zappa had the greatest band in world to see them check out Inca Roads He was also very funny Cheepnis Flakes Don’t eat the yellow snow suite
frank didnt do drugs or drink - And if you were in his band he didnt care if you did or not - however - You better be tight or you are gone - 100s of great stories
Zappa is one of those amazing guitarists that makes me think of that line in Johnny B Good: "He could play the guitar just like ringing a bell." There seems to be no effort. He imagines a sound and the instrument makes it. So much experience and practice behind that.
This is from Live at Palladium - HALLOWEEN (1977). If you dug this you need to watch the entire performance. Frank closed the show with a rendition of Black Napkins and Steve Via has commented that he never heard anyone play the guitar like Frank did in the piece, on that night. Coming from Via, that's saying something.
Frank put out more than 60 albums. He was prolific. He wasn't just a writer, he was a composer and conductor... and the most talented musicians of the era would compete to play in his band. You've hit the mother load! Frank's lyrics are witty, sarcastic, and playful... and although he was a very serious guy, he tried not to take himself too seriously in musical terms. You're about to be bombarded by all the Zappa fanatics who, I dare say, are even more zealous than Tool fanatics. They'll point you in the right direction. Enjoy the ride!
More than that. He had a large recording studio in his house, and he recorded everything. Rehearsals, auditions, writing sessions, outtakes, jams with friends, whatever; not to mention every live show he did. Not only that, but after the original Mothers of Invention broke up in the '60s he never signed another record contract. He always owned his own record companies and only did distribution deals with major labels. That means he owned every recording he made. There's probably enough stuff that his kids, grandkids, great grandkids, and maybe their kids as well will have new material to release, assuming anybody wants it.
Frank was kind of the mad genius of rock. But to have played in his band gave you so much cred. It meant you were a stellar musician. Adrian Belew, the first guitarist, is really good too. He ended up playing with Bowie, Talking Heads and King Crimson.
Look for "Frank Zappa teaches Steve Allen to play the bicycle". That was his first TV interview. It wasn't obvious then that he was going places, but he obviously went places. Legend.
Yes! I love it when people react to this song. This is the song my dad introduced me to Frank Zappa with, and it was amazing to me. This version wasn’t the full song though. The whole song has an amazing intro. Check out the album version, which I believe is live as well.
Forget rabbit holes, my friend. You have just skirted around the event horizon of an intergalactic, interdimensional supermassive black hole! Zappa bring it from the skies.
Zappa is a genius. Glad you keep seeking the more interesting facets of rock. I hope you listen to some of the great indie artists of the 90's and 00's.
He doesn’t just improvise solos, the music arrangements change from performance to performance. But yeah the other version’s solo is legendary. If you want a killer solo check out Zappa’s “sexual harassment in the workplace.” And yes, most of his material is comedy and satirical.
Franks music encompasses rock, jazz, soul, pop and more. It’s well worth the effort to read up about him and his music. Some regard him as a genius, l stand with them. “Lucille has messed my mind up” is definitely one of my favorites and something most don’t expect from him, enjoyed it, have a great day!😊🎸
There is a person on UA-cam who has dozens of live recordings and he will cut out the solo of every version of a song like muffin man and turn it into a 60 minute guitar solo that is seamless and never gets boring because Zappa played it different every night
Polo, please check out 'Weasels Ripped My Flesh' ... a Frank Zappa and the Mothers album with both studio and live improvisations. Then, get a taste of 'Burnt Weenie Sandwich' the previous album. Both released in 1970. Or if you'd like more that are like 'Muffin Man', check out 'Bongo Fury', the album that it's from. Thanks for your heartfelt reaction.
From this same concert, you need to check out Black Napkins and Punky's Whips. Amazing solos. This was from his Halloween show at the Palladium, 1977 if that helps you find them.
If you ever see Frank Zappa with a Gibson SG guitar on, fasten your seatbelt. The guy is a complete freaking genius. If you want to check more of him (and there's a lot and very different) I'd recommend "One size fits all", "Roxy & elsewhere", "Overnite sensation", "Apostrophe", "You can't do that on stage anymore vol. 2", "Absolutely free" and "We're only in it for the money".
A true American. A musical genius. Truly unique. Dive deep, man. You will hear amazing things! His album “One Size Fits All” is great and I think a good place to start.
I was thrilled to find this reaction to a Frank Zappa song! Oddly enough, earlier today, I played this song (and a few others) for my adult son, who didn't remember that I played the albums often when he was a small child. Maybe not as often as Led Zeppelin and a couple of others... but they were always in the rotation on my turntable. Frank was a true musical genius whose work has been mostly overlooked in the last couple of decades. Play more, and I'll be a subscriber.
❤❤❤ It !! I was Band NERD( played Flute & Glockenspiel) in 1974..1st found Zappa when Our Choir director ( Mr Cupi)Played his LP Apostrophe ( SP?) Even Better....2 weeks later Got to meet a friend of his when he came to play at our High School ...Chuck Mangione...the Man ROCKED a Fluegel Horn !!....Love you found Frank !!
I was introduced to Frank’s music by my dad. I was born in 66 and my pop was a huge fan of his and Captain Beefheart. I remember running around the house when I was a kid and lying down on our shag carpet in front of the speakers in our living room and hearing this song and so many others. Naturally, I grew to become a huge fan. Frank will never disappoint. His music is so profound but he never takes himself to seriously with lyrics. It was always so fun to try and figure out what he was talking about when I was a kid before I asked my dad what the lyrics meant. Let’s just say it was a bonding experience I’ll never forget. He was a musical genius. RIP Frank. I truly miss him.
You could check out tracks on your own and post reaction vids and never run out of material, his studio and live catalog is so vast and his interviews are so good, he was so sharp and perceptive about social and political issues
Ship Ahoy is my favorite Zappa Solo. It is very hard to name A Frank Zappa track that is best. His catalog is enormous and straddles a number of genres. I have listened to Frank since I was about 15 years old. I once got to play bass with his son Dweezil for the song Apostrophe. 8 of the best minutes of my life
Zappa is truly a musical genius. He is a composer and director. He demands excellence from every band member and he did not tolerate drugs and alcohol. He is super intelligent while incredibly zany at the same time. I suggest Frank Zappa - Inca Roads (A Token Of His Extreme) and you will get a bonus of the most talented claymation work every produced for a small portion of the video.(most likely enhanced by LSD)
I saw Frank 3 times in concert. All 3 times different music, all 3 times a different experience. I was in my 20's when I saw him, and I worked in a bar that had jazz bands every weekend. I was talking to one of the jazz band lead singers and said jazz isn't my favorite genre of music but Idid recognize the talent. I explained I was into Pink Floyd and Zappa. To my surprise, she loved Zappa also and he was highly regarded in the jazz community also. Zappa crossed generations and genres unlike no one else.
I’m 64 and have been listening to Zappa since I was 14. Started with his album We’re Only In It For The Money and if you listen to it you’ll probably wonder why I became a fan. Franks musical abilities have blown me away time after time and I predicted when I was around 30 that his true musical genius wouldn’t be realized until after his death.
I was a kid in the 60/70's in England. If you wanted your party to wind down, put on the Mothers/Zappa. It would clear the place apart from those who understood and recognised pure musical genius. I saw the Mothers at the Colston Hall, Bristol. It was almost empty, so he invited everyone down to front to party. Pure magic.
Zappa was a brilliant composer and one of the greatest guitar players who ever lived. This was not the best version of the song, but his live stuff was always phenomenal. You should check out the song Stink Foot
saw frank zappa 6 times...he is our tchaikovsky...he was a pure genius...i saw him at stoneybrook college 2nd row center...played the entire joes garage album...very very smart man
Some artists drag you down a rabbit hole. Frank Zappa will pull you into a huge, complicated cavern. With 61+ albums and everything from doo wop to straight up experimental fusion, you'll find much more to enjoy. I'd recommend a "story" song like "Dinah Moe Hum" or, for complexity and a killer guitar solo, try "Inca Roads". Great first reaction!
The Comfortably Numb solo is undoubtedly amazing, but it's exactly the kind of thing Frank was talking about: something that was made up carefully in a studio over a long time, and not at a moment's notice. And the unprepared moment is the point where you spot the real talent.
I think perhaps, the unprepared moment is the point where you spot genius/virtuosity. I think talent qualifies as talent at some respectable bar lower than that set by FZ! David Gilmore is undeniably talented, improv or no.
Zappa was incredible . In his band were Adrian Belew , Stevie Vai,Terry Bozzio, George Duke and Billy Cobham a o . They all wanted to play with Frank even when he was a difficult conductor and bandleader, His Phonography contains albums like ApostrophemHot Rats, Chunga's Revenge , One Size fits all , Joe's Garage,Sheik Yerbouti , Ruben and the Jets ,Overnite Sensation and Live at the Fillmore. There is a serie called " you can't do that on stage anymore" that had at least 12 volume's and contains live versions of his songs on different periods in his career .All brilliantly documented and produced. Every song the precise band members names. All heartily recommended

Look for "Frank Zappa teaches Steve Allen to play the bicycle". That was his first TV interview. It wasn't obvious then that he was going places, but he obviously went places. Legend.
love that one
You should definitely do more Frank Zappa and check out Zappa Plays Zappa with his son Dweezil and long time friend guitar legend Steve Vai.
Yes! I love it when people react to this song. This is the song my dad introduced me to Frank Zappa with, and it was amazing to me. This version wasn’t the full song though. The whole song has an amazing intro. Check out the album version, which I believe is live as well.
Love seeing Zappa get the love he deserves.
Forget rabbit holes, my friend. You have just skirted around the event horizon of an intergalactic, interdimensional supermassive black hole! Zappa bring it from the skies.
Zappa's guitar tone is unlike any other, it's soo amazing
Zappa is a genius. Glad you keep seeking the more interesting facets of rock. I hope you listen to some of the great indie artists of the 90's and 00's.
Absolutely incredible stellar musicians in this band!!! 🔥
He doesn’t just improvise solos, the music arrangements change from performance to performance. But yeah the other version’s solo is legendary. If you want a killer solo check out Zappa’s “sexual harassment in the workplace.” And yes, most of his material is comedy and satirical.
Great reaction.
Please keep going. Frank Zappa is the greatest rock musician in history. He’s also the greatest composer in history.
Franks music encompasses rock, jazz, soul, pop and more. It’s well worth the effort to read up about him and his music. Some regard him as a genius, l stand with them. “Lucille has messed my mind up” is definitely one of my favorites and something most don’t expect from him, enjoyed it, have a great day!😊🎸
Lucille is the best song on Joe's Garage... Which is a hard choice among so many great tunes...
Steve Vai was in the Audience that Day & said that was God joking with the guitar.
He is the mvp that's what I'm talking about he is the GOAT the gooat!
Saw him at an outdoor concert one summer night in the early 80's, with an orchestra ...
It was M A G I C A L 💯 👁💥👁 👍
Zapper was a genre onto himself. He was incredible and I was lucky enough to see him perform many times in person.
The 70's were an AMAZING time to be a teenager and come into one self. We didn't take ourselves so seriously. WE OWNED FUN.
This is the song that got me into Zappa, some 20 years ago. Amazing.
He left us too soon but his musical legacy was his gift! RIP maestro!
Frank was a musical GENIUS
A true American. A musical genius. Truly unique. Dive deep, man. You will hear amazing things!
His album “One Size Fits All” is great and I think a good place to start.
George Clinton of P-Funk fame said something like “every black musician should listen to Zappa”
That’s a pretty good endorsement in my mind
Very deep hole, unique, a lyrical and guitar genius.
If you dare to dig deeper, you must hear the full album "Apostrophe"
Zappa was one of the strangest performers that I have ever seen, and I've seen a lot. Love his guitar skills.

Awesome to see you discovering Zappa! So many types of sounds, ideas, lyrics, Instruments and so on. Zappa is an experience unlike many others.
He changed the music World of boring assholes 🤣
The vault of Zappa rivals any musician’s library.
Wow! I’ve never seen live performances, but this is every bit up there with the best of the time.
Frank began in early sixties. He was full of integrity. Genius musician, composer, guitarist. One of the best ever
You could check out tracks on your own and post reaction vids and never run out of material, his studio and live catalog is so vast and his interviews are so good, he was so sharp and perceptive about social and political issues
I saw Frank 3 times twice at the Mothers day concerts 73/74 super great show . Frank RIP
I've been listening to FZ since I was a kid. Never disappoints. Musical genius.
Pure magic.
Saw that Zappa interview too and was really fascinated by what he said . I can appreciate him much more . Great video.
Zappa was a brilliant composer and one of the greatest guitar players who ever lived. This was not the best version of the song, but his live stuff was always phenomenal. You should check out the song Stink Foot
saw frank zappa 6 times...he is our tchaikovsky...he was a pure genius...i saw him at stoneybrook college 2nd row center...played the entire joes garage album...very very smart man
What an intro to ZAPPA!!
wish I could have seen him back in the day. He was one of a kind. The more I listened to him, the more I saw and heard just how talented he was.
That's one of my favourite Zappa tunes too, live or otherwise. Would have been an unforgettable performance
Frank is one of my favorites. You will enjoy his work.
An amazing quantity and quality. The more you see and hear him the more incredulous you are that this guy never did drugs.
I recommend Zombie Woof studio version. Frank's solo is amazing.
Any version may do! Even covers, since the composition is so great. But of course Dweezil + Vai + Napoleon (Zappa plays Zappa) is excellent!
The comfortably numb solo was improvised.
Zappa was an arrogant asshole and ignorant
Ever heard Zappa’s band doing the Allman’s Whipping Post” ? Frank doesn’t play a note.
Shit ugly zappa could only impress unsuspecting fools
