Zappa never played the same solo twice. He considered playing a guitar solo "air sculpting" and no sculptor spends his career cranking out the same statue.
This was actually a very "conventional" song for Zappa. He's sort of the "mad scientist" of rock theater. I highly recommend a funky song called "Titties and Beer". With a title like that, how can you go wrong? 😎
Zappa made about 60 studio albums (1966-93). Instumental pieces: Peaches en regalia, Little umbrellas, Eat That Question, The Grand Wazoo, Waka Jawaka, G-spot tornado, King Kong, Chunga's revenge. Song with lyrics: Cheepnis/Son of Orange County/More Trouble Everyday (Roxy and Elsewhere album), Inca Roads, Yellow Snow suite, Hungry Freaks Daddy (first song 1966).
*Whenever someone says “I don’t understand Frank Zappa” “I don’t get his music”. Just shows to me their depth of musicality. So much to his music. Something for EVERYONE*
Guitarists like Zappa are one of the reasons I've always said it's impossible to have a single GOAT guitar player. There's just too many to pick just one. And it depends on what kind of music you enjoy also. I'd definitely list him as one of the greatest. He's definitely unique and his band is as good as it gets as far as talent goes. Glad you got to check him out. Another great, but underated guitar player is Frank Marino ( Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush). There's a video on UA-cam of him playing the hell out of the song Johnny B Good. And another from the Midnight Special show of them performing I'm a King Bee. He's one of my favorites.
I'm 71 and have seen many many rock concerts, Zappa twice. Favorite guitarists are Hendrix, Duane Allman, Zappa, Santana. Favorite Zappa song is probably Peaches in Regalia. Peace
one of frank's (if not THE) most beautiful guitar solos is on "a watermelon in easter hay". it's not heavy like "muffin man", but it is 7 minutes of absolute genius.

Speaking of guitarists, there is Adrian Belew here too. Not having deveroped fully his amazing and unique style yet, but playing in a way which was suggestive of the shape of things to come a few years later.

I will not be the first person to mention this, but even today, while everyone is acknowledging Zappa's musical genius, he is still underrated as a (rock) guitarist. He obviously has released a couple of 100% soloing albums, but this era represents Zappa as it's best, and as a guitar god. Whatever anyone has to say about his own non conformist playing style. Also touching on his studio work, eventually the majority of his post late 70s work has live recordings woven into it, without the average listener knowing! (Think Sheik Yerbouti). This is why he basically recorded every show from that time. It actually saved him from hiring lots of studio musicians (which he still did for regular overdubs if he wasn't happy with the foundation lol).
As much as I love Vai's playing and therefore the early 80s Zappa incarnations, I think Frank's own playing was at its peak in the last few years of the 70s; some of the '77-'79 shows are just incredible in their intensity. Also, the synergy in the band when you had Belew, Mars and Bozzio all just fucking killing it behind Frank was almost beyond belief.
