    The reason this show works for guests the likes of an actress like Margot Robbie and a social scientist like Malcolm Gladwell really comes down to the skill of the interviewer. He and his staff do the homework necessary to ask excellent questions and then give the guest the space to answer them without interruption. That’s the lost art in most talk shows these days. The hubris of the host. Not this one. It is intensely guest-focused. Not to mention, his outstanding ability to gently always pivot the guest from their pain back to the questions. Make no mistake: this is a skill. They trust him and always push beyond their perceived threshold because they allow him to maintain the momentum of conversation, thus focusing away from the thoughts of, as Margot Robbie said, “That’s so effing hot.”

    • @publius9350
      @publius9350 3 роки тому +21

      The simplicity of the show allows the interviewer to go very deep. Even if the subject has nothing to really say, you know you will be entertained by their physical reaction to capsaicin. He knows people will get their bare minimum, so swing at every pitch hoping for a home run.

(Without forgetting the lessons of the past of course).

      @ddboy123ful 3 роки тому

      Interesting. I have always thought the opposite. From my admittedly limited experience playing video games, it always seemed like the video game was doing most of the cognitive work for me. That's why you can play for hours; there's just so much stimulation for little mental effort. Furthermore, the reasoning behing the theory that video games makes people smarter doesn't make that much sense. If each generation has been getting smarter, doesn't that go against the finding that video games have any impact (unless there was a significant increase in IQ when video games were developed)? I.e., if video games made people smarter, then there would be an increase in the increase of IQ around the time that video games became maintstream.

    • @michaelmcphee2006
      @michaelmcphee2006 3 роки тому

      He was mistaken though when he said that IQs are just getting higher and higher. This is called the Flynn Effect, and it has been reversed in this most recent generation (it also dipped in the 70s, but then went back to rising). Whether or not this has anything to do with video games is a complete unknown though.

In the high school gym, there is a banner at the stage right side that features his name for a running record he set while a student there. After discovering the book "The Outliers" I began to realize the town is covered in Gladwell family history. When my kids would eventually attend the same high school, I was pleased to see the banner is still in the same place. Records may be getting broken all over the place, but after 40 years of small town athletes, Malcolm still holds his.

    Absolutely shocked to see Malcolm on here. I love his books and recommend ‘David & Goliath’ to everyone. Great to see Hot Ones expanding its range of guests beyond stereotypical celebrities. Great stuff as always!

    What an interesting episode. His wit is perfectly placed. Very intelligent men. Fun to watch and fun to mix it up. Best episode this season in my opinion. Loving the variety. Good job guys!

      Stephen is an old 63. This show might kill him. Get Hugh Laurie on first to see if it's safe.

      Have you seen the one with Neil deGrasse Tyson? I don't remember for certain but I think that may have been the episode that got me hooked on this show.

    What a great refreshing take on the guest experience, from a formally edjumicated learned person. I completely lost track of how quickly they were ascending. This is the first episode ever I didn't know they were eating " The Bomb" GREAT episode Malcolm Gladwell

    I loved this! I have two of his books sitting on my shelf waiting to be read and this encouraged me to pick one up. More authors please, we don't get to see much publicity like this for authors.
