Hetfields parents were EXTREMELY religious Christian scientists. They sheltered him severely, they divorced when he was 13. His mother died of cancer when he was 16 (she refused treatment because she didnt believe in medicine and wanted to stay true to her faith) then he went to live with his older half brother. Hetfield is great with his kids, he's taken long hiatuses because he didn't want his kids to grow up without him
Didnt he stop swearing for a while on live tours bc his kids were there or watching? Or was that a rumor?

Nowhere near as much, but yes, he said he consciously cut back on swearing because his kids were on tour so much then with him.
Check out a documentary called "Absent". He's in it talking about his childhood and growing up with abandonment issues because of his Dad leaving and his family's belief system. He talks just a little about it in the Metallica: Behind the Music from VH1, and a little in Some Kind of Monster. In the 90's right after S&M, before Newsted split from Metallica, they did sitdowns at the Playboy Mansion for interviews for the Magazine. It got a lot of heat because it was a bunch of one on one interviews that were made to seem as though they were all interviewed together, and no one knew what each other had said, where Hetfield talks really bare bones about his parents, and that interview was one of the key factors Jason quit.
I didn't say it's why he quit. I said it's one of the reasons. I think the actual reasons were alot of what James was saying in that interview though. Jason wasn't allowed the same freedom outside the bad the Lars, Kirk and James himself was, and he was stifled creatively and treated poorly.
Teach children *how* to think, not *what* to think.

I don't care if Vin thinks Disposable Heroes is Metallica's heaviest song, because Dyers Eve is literally the hardest and angriest song the band has ever written... Also, Lars is amazing on the AJFA record throughout.
Filip Dzero My vote goes to The Thing That Should Not Be, For Whom the Bell Tolls, or Harvester of Sorrow as their heaviest songs.
Harvester of Sorrow is a good runner-up, TTTSNB isn't really that good, I find the riff very repetitive and it isn't that exciting. Bells is also not that heavy.
Sad But True, The Thing That Should Not Be, Dream No More are by far Metallica’s heaviest songs.

Filip Dzero Harvester is definitely heavy. Heavy songs are made even heavier when they’re slower, though.
James Hetfield himself introduces SBT & TTTSNB as ‘heavy’. He doesn’t do that for Harvester.
James' Dad was a truck driver that split from his Mom when he was 13. They hid it from him for years that he just up and left by saying he was on a business trip, then after a few years of never coming back, his Mom finally admitted he just up and left. His Mom and Dad (His Dad taught Christian Science Sunday School) were Christian Science believers and he speaks at length about how he'd have to get up and leave health class and science class since his family didn't want him learning it and having to have exemption notes written for him missing it and how alienating it was to point he was bullied over it. Then add in his Mom getting cancer and dying when he was 16 because she wouldn't seek treatment, it all adds up to this song.
Ryan Maliek that song does deal with James thinking God failed, but I don’t think the thing about his parents forcing their religion on him is part of the meaning. Obviously they did do that to him, or did something close to it, but that particular aspect is sort of absent from the song. Dyer’s Eve deals with that heavily, but for The God That failed, not exactly. That song doesn’t really have any “this is what you did to me” but more like “See, now look where your beliefs got you”. It’s more about his mother’s result (death due to her beliefs, than his own result (a product of how he was raised). His result is explored in more in Dyer’s Eve.

Hetfield Riff Master
Hetfield felt that his mother valued her faith more than her life or even him. Her letting her faith keep from the cancer treatments left James feeling abandoned and he felt very resentful of the very faith that took his mother from him. He felt like his words meant nothing and empty as he pleaded for his mom to stay in this world and fight for the sake of living and loving his son.
This song really isn’t that much about teen angst as it may seem. It’s much deeper and more broad.
The angriest song on the angriest, hardest album they ever released.
Metallica at the height of their powers. Few bands ever reached this level.
This is an interesting song because it has some of Hetfield’s most personal lyrics. His dad left the family when he was young, and his mom died of cancer because she refused medical treatment (because of her Christian Science beliefs, which also sheltered his as a child). There’s other songs he wrote about his upbringing, including “The God That Failed” and “Mama Said.”

Metallica Harvester Of Sorrow?
Specifically from the Moscow 1991 show
While I can understand you jumping to the defense of parenting, I think it's very important to understand that this is not a "I'm mad at my parents because they didn't give me a pony, or the most popular brand of shoes, or let me stay out as late as I wanted" song. It is not at all that puerile. This is a "One of you was hardly there, and the other held my head down, eyes, ears and mouth closed to anything outside your bubble for so long that, once I got dropped into reality, the thing I ended up being most ready to be was a neurotic, wild mess" song.
Education is extremely important in a sheltering framework. You can give them shelter for a certain amount of time, but when it comes down to it, the world is still out there. Rape, murder... it's just a shot away (to quote the Stones).

My observations about these lyrics are:
A) Metallica (most song writers in general, actually) don't intend for their lyrics to be preachy or to be taken as 100% literal truth. I am sure that James Hetfield is aware that many people had worse upbringings than him, but that doesn't invalidate his feelings or these lyrics as a work of art, nor mean that he is trying to get pity from anyone. They exist in a sort of timeless, subjective vacuum and are probably intended more to provoke thought, emotion and discussion than anything else.
B) Music is entertainment and all artists pander to their audiences to some extent. You won't catch a lot of Metal bands singing about their high school crushes or rappers dropping rhymes about their privileged, middle class upbringings. This type of anti-authoritarian ranting on the other hand, would be very appealing to the type of angst-ridden youth who are largely drawn to this style of music.
And C) Music and lyrics can be very therapeutic for those who create them (something Hetfield has always strongly expressed). His past struggles related to his religious upbringing, his parent's divorce and his mom's death have obviously had a big impact on his life and as such, have been at the core of many Metallica songs. This song seems to me not only to be an expression of anger and resentment, but one of unresolved grief as well. Good on anyone who is able to find a healthy creative outlet for their pain and hopefully, help others who may be having similar struggles.
On a personal level, I have always felt a powerful connection to James Hetfield's lyrics since I was in my early teens. I too came from a very sheltered religious upbringing. I am now a grown man with children of my own (not an angry, immature teenager) but I still feel strongly that my parents, despite their best intentions, tried to overprotect me to the point of mental and emotional suffocation. The irony is that it actually caused more social and emotional issues for me in the end. To make matters harder, my mother died of cancer while I was still in the midst of my rebellious teens (much like James' mother) and it took me many years to come to terms with my feelings (a toxic mixture of resentment, grief and personal guilt). My dad, who was equally devastated by her loss, did the best he could but in many ways, hid his feelings from us and also refused to acknowledge the grief that we were going through as well. At 17 years old I had fallen into a deep, suicidal depression, quit school and turned to heavy alcohol and drug use as a means of numbing my pain. When I attempted to reach out to my dad (in a drunk stupor, albeit) and tell him about the suicidal thoughts I was having, he literally walked away from me and we never spoke of it again. I am very glad that I didn't take my own life but I honestly don't know what kept me from doing so at that point. My Dad has since also passed away and although I love and miss him very much, to this day I feel like he emotionally abandoned me when I needed him the most. All I can say as a father is that as much I may want to protect my kids (and may one day inadvertently earn their resentment as well) I will always try to let them be heard and respect their feelings, individuality and dignity as people. Wish me luck I guess! LOL.
"I didn't want this one to end." My sentiments exactly. AJFA was not the first Metallica album I heard, but it was the first album I liked. Dyer's Eve clinched it for me. The cherry on top. Thanks!

Insane guitar solos, aggresive drumming, angry vocals. You could tell this album was fueled by Cliff's death, being it the most technical and my favourite metallica album.
As a fan of Metallica, and a product of a home where a false form of "Christianity" was pushed on me, I still feel the pain and the after effects this song projects.....and I'm 45 years old! So what James talks about actually lasts a lifetime and I doubt it will ever go away!!! Great reaction, you two!

One of my favorite metallica songs. The riff after the solo is one I wish they had carried on a little longer, absolutely killer. The drumming during this song is some of Lars's best. As a consequence and also due to all the timing and tempo changes, this is not a song they play live very often. Also this was James at his angriest, he was really spitting fire during a couple of parts in this song. The end result is one of their most aggressive songs. Its no Testament (heh) but it hits pretty hard.

Honestly, this is my favourite track from this album, the double bass drum kicks on this were the first time I had heard that technique used in music as a kid, it blew my mind back then, and makes this song a stand out for me to this day.

My parents are loving and have always tried. But they felt they knew what was best for me, despite what I wanted. Now, in my 40's, the line "I'm in hell without you, cannot cope without you two" shouldn't hit as hard as it does at my age. It shouldn't be that way.

I think And Justice For All is a really overlooked song on this album. If you play it yourself, there is a fun factor to the way it flows. Very engaging for players! Same with the rest of the album though.

Honestly Sori, i think your thoughts about what the song ment in different stages was the most spot on review i have ever heard. You are deep, smart and brilliant to say the least!
To this day, one of the most complete albums I've had the privilege of listening to. I can blast this bad boy from beginning to end and listen to the entire thing in one sitting if my kids don't bug me too much.
This is a big stand out song for me, personally. I was about 12-13 when I first heard this. I never held resentment towards my parents, but growing up in, I remember them saying "Do as I say, not as I do" more than a few times. That line alone made me connect to this song, making it more personal. I love the entire album, it's easily one of my favorite albums of all time.

Yea this is a pretty tough song but Frayed Ends of Sanity and Eye of the Beholder are more challenging over all.
Khellendross Exactly, this is a tough song due to the speed but it's not complex riff or arrangement wise. The riffs and time signature changes in the other songs are more complicated, particularly in Frayed Ends and the title track. And Eye of the Beholder has the tricky middle section, the "fakeout" riff (the extra riff that only happens before the first chorus) and the sudden stops.
Dyers Eve is "simple" in the sense that it has the same structure throughout the whole song.
Its true, the only real change in the song is that riff right after the solo. And its very short. Metallica did that alot on this album, throwing in really tricky riffs right after or before a solo. On Frayed Ends that really difficult riff is right before the solo. On this song and on Blackened the tricky riffs are right after the solo. I think I first noticed them doing that on Master of Puppets, they have a tricky riff right after the solo on Damage Inc.

You guys should really listen to (To Live is to Die & Diers Eve) together. Definitely sets the mood, with such a drastic change in song content & tempo. I come from the time of vinyls, cassette tapes, & then cd, & listened to albums all the way through. Hearing certain songs back to back sets mood & feeling you don't by listening to them individually.

A lot of stuff off the Justice album is really technical, I would say the title track and The Frayed Ends of Sanity are pushing on Progressive Thrash, some real interesting music in there

This is probably one of the most important songs I have ever heard. Be it at 14 when it came out when I was in 8th grade and wanted to escape...or in my early 20s as I was still listening to this record daily. Musically it was a HUGE influence. I think the real importance one needs to take from this song is th honesty. It takes a large amount of humility to admit that your parents were in some way right and wanted to save you from the shit we all deal with as adults.

all good songs. Dante's Inferno to. I sent them the Alive in Athens DVD which has all but Question of Heaven on it. Though I am not sure they have a dvd player to hook up to their computer (something I didn't think about).

I always felt he was telling them that he wants parents that care for him for who he is, not judgemental people that criticize him for what he's not.

Well, discipline teaches kids to be liars if it goes wrong. Instead, kids are there to teach us. We should listen to them. They tell us, where we're wrong. Also where our parents were wrong. If they say something and they're right, why not admit it? Like for instance, I was asking my nephew, when he's on the other side of the road and I say he can cross, what does he do? And he said look for himself first before he goes. And that's exactly what I expect him to do. There's situations you gotta be able to trust people, but you shouldn't close your eyes if you've got another perspective. Why would I ask him to only listen to what I said?
I remember very well, when my nephew was asking me if I wasn't gonna go after my niece when I suspected her to do something mildly stupid. I said no. It won't be a risk enough to interrupt. She's gotta make her own experience. But she better not lie about it. I can tell you what my experience is and if you're smart, you take that as a shortcut, cause I'm not gonna lie to you. You don't have to repeat my mistakes. But I won't be around all the time to force you not to do things. You might have to be ready making your own decisions. And then I knew it was the right thing, when he immediately hugged me.
Now, I'm not saying you should be best friend with your kids, cause you can't. They all need something to rebell against, and if there's too much freedom, it might turn out worse than it has to. If there's a consequence announced, than that has to be the consequence. Otherwise you're not believable. You gotta have an explanation though, not just "because I said so". That's rubbish. Like if the kid is running into danger, and you scream "STOP!" there should be and automatism based on trust so the kid knows to better stop now or else. If you loose that faith into you by commanding the kid around for random reasons, you've got a problem. Instead of protecting too much, you have the option to prepare them for life and make their own decisions. They gotta have the security to go and explore the world on their terms at some point. You can do your best in giving them the tools and ideas to have a solution at hand, so you can trust them to be able to do so. You should have a very basic set of rules you expect them to follow, cause you might be very dissapointed if you worry about any mistake. And we have to make mistakes to grow and learn. All of us. I guess it would be the right thing to do to admit to the kids as well if we made a wrong decision. In the end, they gotta know we're doing the things we do because we love them and want them to be fine and sometimes what was wrong seemed to be the right thing to do at that time. There can't be a perfect parent. And so as different growing up can be for us, most of the parents manage to have great kids. They're individuals though, so they can't all walk the same path. At some point, there's gotta be space in society for them to make the best out of themselves.
This album was so much different from anything they had done before, which is one of the reasons i love it. It's another step forward and very progressive, and very intricate, but yet its so great, and really shows off their many layers and talent.
Kirk has said this album was purposely a very technical one just to show they could. Combine that with James lyrics and you have it.
Not sure if anyone else mentioned it, the stray quiet note at the beginning of this is carry over from To Live Is To Die tracks 8 and 9 if I recall correctly on the ...And Justice For All album
