James Hetfield grew up in a very religious household. Not simply religious but very strict and repressive upbringing. It was so bad that Hetfield basically had to watch his mom die because their religion kept them from getting her proper medical attention. Anyways, heavy metal often speaks to those who or is written by people who come from broken homes and dysfunctional families. That’s why songs like this work for us . Also love this song I second Frayed Ends of Sanity This album made me fall in love with guitar
His mom was Christian Scientist, I think. It's why he rails on religion so much. He blames it (specifically CS) for her not getting proper treatment for her health issues.
It's dudes like you that give me hope for the future. We have much more in common as humans than what divides us. Keep exploring, youngblood, the journey will be rewarding.
In my opinion this album hasn't been surpassed by anyone, was groundbreaking in 1988 when it was released and still is to this day, simply nothing like it
“Generally, James was a gentle person when we were together but he liked very violent music. We would drive at 60 miles an hour up and down the Pacific Coast Highway in the fog, drunk and listening to Venom.” - Dave Mustaine on his friendship with James Hetfield.
I love that you get excited. Other reactors just listen, nod their heads, and give their two cents afterward. You have to pause the song and go OH MY GOD and that's why I watch these!
I first heard Metallica in junior high around 90 and this album was the coolest shit I had ever heard. Just a question fan to fan: I pretty much deserted them at the black album. I'm wondering if that shift affected you at all because I didn't take it well lol. Unforgiven was it for me, they just lost me there. I'm wondering your opinion on everything post black album...
@@neonmonkey1942 The Unforgiven is the song that James is most passionate about. No they never lost me. If the talent is there, then they can write the music they want to at the time.

No heartfelt singing, No Lars on a 5 piece, no 3 minute verse/chorus songs. None of that. Fast, loud, angry and insanely talented at the same time. So from my perspective, they all got haircuts, simplified their music to elementary levels, took on a radio rock format in their songs and started putting videos on Mtv. Dude bought the NoLife Til Leather cassette in 1982/3 and knew they were the best band I’ve ever heard. James saved the most savage song and riffs for the last song especially the galloping chugging monster riff after the final solo as a way to say “take this tasty riff with ya -now bye”
Not only is this song blistering from start to finish but it is so damn CLEAN and really shows the musicality of every member of the band. And Justice for All is my favorite Metallica album and Dyers Eve is such a finale... I get out of breath just listening to it.
The reason they started so fast is they spent the last 9:48 morning the death of their first bassist Cliff Burton with an excellent instrumental. To Live Is To Die goes straight into Dyers Eve to end the album "...And Justice For All." But for ultimate epic, you need to watch "Master of Puppets" from either S&M concert. It's amazing.

Mate, props to you for trying this song. If your bread and butter is rap/hip hop, old skool metal is worlds apart from that. I love rap, but metal is REAL music. Hard, loud, technical, composition. It's got it all. I hope you're a fan of Lost in Vegas. Peace ✌️
I love your reactions … are very sincere and reales … I remember when I was younger and discovered Tallica, broke all my boundaries and fallen in love … his Music is hypnotical and powerful
I found Metallica Circa 1996. The first song I was introduced to was until it sleeps. However, one year later I discovered this hour long block where only Metallica was played on the radio, called mandatory Metallica. That is where I discovered Ride the Lightning, Kill Em All, Master of Puppets, and justice for all, and so much more. Those were the good old days
My awareness of Metallica started with the video of One from AJFA. My first tape was TBA. That album was so amazing to me that I listened to it constantly. About 5 years later a guy at work said to me "I'll let you borrow Master of Puppets... then get back to me" Man, that album was great. I returned his cd to him and then proceeded to get the back catalog. At that point, I understood what people meant by TBA and pre-TBA Metallica but I loved it all so... I've basically gotten every album of theirs since. The only one that was a true letdown was St. Anger. Load/ReLoad were kind of in that 90s vein of what metal was... if any band other than Metallica had of released those they would have been considered great works. As a Metallica effort they were just ok. I think Death Magnetic was underrated but I swear the mixing on that album sounded like the bass was tuned down. Hardwired was pretty damn good. I am a HUGE fan of the Garage Inc double cd. The S&M ones are a cool change of pace.

One of the more underrated Metallica songs in my opinion. Trapped Under Ice is another.
