- Is this it for Toyota? How good is Toyota reliability today? Well, the story has changed and I'm going to show you why Toyota reliability isn't as good as it once was. We'll talk about what's going to happen going forward and if we'll ever see Toyota make reliable cars and SUVs again.

Yeah, when I got my V6 Camry I kept my 1999 Town Car. The Ford Panther Platform cars prioritized reliability and Durability over everything else. Only 17 MPG and at best 239 HP but mine is going strong with 175K miles on it.
Most people want more reliability and not more performance. I do not want a faster hot-rod. I do not need turbo chargers and all these high tech gadgets. I will not buy another new vehicle. Prices are too high to purchase what I do not want.
THE CAR CARE NUT says the waste gate issue has been resolved. He said don't buy a 22 or 23 Tundra. 24 or newer should be much better. He did a comparison of the 2nd gen vs 3rd gen Tundra and new Tundra has poor paint quality in certain areas. The 5.7 is a simpler engine and probably will out last a TTV6. I am still amazed my 20 Tundra was $51 000 new. It was a relative bargain.
@CarGuyisCarGuyyes, it’s always best to avoid the first few years. I don’t know if other manufacturers do this but Toyota usually fixes the issues a few years later.
I bought a 2024 Camry XSE V6 in February for many of the reasons discussed in the video. It has every option except the heated steering wheel (I live in Florida) and the two tone paint (I didn't want extra black on the roof, black + Florida = Hot.) I didn't want a CVT, hybrid system, or turbos so the Camry was pretty much the only game in town for a sedan with a good amount of power. I appreciate that the automakers are doing all of these things to improve fuel economy, but they are compromising on reliability to do so in my opinion and I thinks it hurts the consumer in the long run. My 300 horsepower Camry gets the same gas mileage as the 158 horsepower Mazda 5 it replaced without resorting to gimmicks. That is a great achievement and certainly good enough for me.
I’m about to purchase the 2019-2022 toyota avalon touring with v6 with Mpg :22 in city / 32 on highway. I won’t buy those new cars cause the reliability will go down.
@@franckjoseph4806 If they still made the Avalon I would have gotten that instead of the Camry. They use the same powertrain as the V6 Camry but are a bit more focused on Luxury than Handling. Both are still great cars IMO.
I just bought an XSE for a lot of the same reasons as you. I got a 4 banger, didn't want the 2 tone either but got everything else except all-wheel drive.
@@acgsmith5937 You can't go wrong with any version of the Camry IMO. I have never owned or driven a car that is even remotely quick so the V6 was kind of a bucket list item for me, but I'm certain the 4-cylinder would have also served me well and saved a lot of fuel costs.

I think the present 4Runner is the best vehicle Toyota makes.

All the manufacturers have been cutting back on costs while increasing the car prices for bigger profits add that with lot of unnecessary technology this is going to lead less reliable cars. With that said, Toyota/Lexus is still better than most.

My 2008 acura tsx has no issues whatsoever. Just regular maintnance.
First! Old Toyota vehicles like previous gen Tacoma and current 4Runner will hold their value even more now!

That touch-screen looks tacky, like it was just velcroed onto the dash as in many late model vehicles. It's all about the stupid screens, not the fundamentals that make a good car, and one that's safe to operate its controls without causing a major collision.
Japanese manufactured ones are still the very best.

I dunno about that. I thought that way too until my Japanese made Honda Accord Type S started to have engine knocking, fault oxygen sensors, drive train issues, all four cylinders replaced, I could go on. I bought it new in 2010 and still have it however as it still gets older it gets worse! Now have problems starting the car from idle and sometimes can't start at all. Starter Motor has already been replaced. Get a crank shaft error each time.

Japanese assembly is still the best you can get.
Still a machine, no guarantees it will be fault free. Japanese Toyota minimizes the risk

Frankly Mazda 6, 2.5 Skyactiv-G, naturally aspirated, 6 speed in house built torque converter.
Check if the spark plugs are burning oil & be aware the suspension, motor mounts, control arms, shocks etc will need servicing.
Unfortunately, the new 2.5 skyactive g has 2 deactivating cylinders and this causes vibrations.
After doing some research, in October, I decided to buy a used - pre covid- 2020, 30,000mile toyota avalon - yes I am an "old man".
First - I hate suvs, premium gas,4cyl, turbos, CVTs, stop/start, rubber timing belts, and direct injection..... That's just me!
The Avalon has a regular gas 300HP / 3.5L V6, non turbo, indirect&Direct injection, no stop start, steel timing chain, 8speed automatic, Ultra Low emissions, 30 MPG,
Navigation, all cameras, great infotainment system, nice interior etc.
It is very comfortable with all the features. It is basically an ES 350,
Since it is an "old man" car, it was well maintained and garaged non smoker.
So it's Camry reliable yet Lexus comfortable.
It is sleek and quick.😃

Good choice, my brother had one as a daily driver, bought as a lease return quite a few years ago with 30,000 miles on it. It finally died - with 325,000 miles on it. The original engine was still running, the transmission failed. Just keep it maintained and you should have a great car.
What else did you consider along with the Avalon? I’m in the market, and want to avoid a lot of those same things you mentioned, that you don’t like.

@@sherrikwhiteside6107 If you love the Avalon, you might also love a Lincoln Town Car. Sadly 2013 was the last model year for them, but they have the Reliability of a Toyota.
It’s also increasing insurance premiums because these things cost a kings ransom to fix or replace too in the case of a crash

What most people like you dont realize is that toyota have very long if not the longest life cycles for their products and vehicles. And everytime they change their entire lineup to an all new platform, like all manufacturers, they will suffer from reliability and quality issues. It will take time to fix these issued over a few years until voila! Reliable vehicles. This should be no surprise cause this is the toyota way. Kaizen continuous improvement
But throwing in a hybrid system increases the costs significantly. No Kaizen system is going to improve that spec!

Early hybrids were retrofitted gasoline cars.
Now they are primarily built as hybrids so are way cheaper than they were compared to gas cars and just as reliable especially with the electronic cvt

LOL. When you said "wastegate" I rolled my eyes. I *just* had to deal with the wastegate actuator on my 2017 Alfa Giulia getting loose and rattling. Car has 90K trouble-free miles (its actually been so good so far I call it the "Italian Camry"). Well, the reality of modern engines caught up with me; a plastic knob that holds the wastegate arm just wears over time and now it is loose and rattles. Soon it won't move with the precision it is supposed to and the car will detect "underboost" and throw codes. Very common for this engine once the years get on it, and the "fix" is new turbo (even though the turbo itself is fine). If you lease, or keep for maybe 7 / 8 years tops, these 2.0T engines are ok. However you will *never* get the years of trouble free service out of them as you would the 3.5/3.3 V6s or any of the V8s Toyota used to make. They ALL do this with the plastic to keep the weight down ( and the mpg's up). If we could just ban plastic from engine components every brand's reliability scores would go up.

That plastic part on the turbo is not about weight. It's there specifically to reduce life expectancy of the unit. If this were not the case they would make a replacement part to fix only the plastic part and not be forced to buy a new turbo. It's all about money.
I think we may wanna go into a bike because we'll never find a car that'll be 100% built nor immune to problems.@@ECPP
@@varmastiko2908 I feel like this is the end of an era of reliable cars & I feel if cars were perfect then, cars would look rather boring but, I feel like cars becoming throwaway cars unfortunately & if this is the direction we're going into then, we might need to use a bike.

Very insightful! I think I'll hang onto my naturally aspirated 3.5 V6, low mileage, CPO Lexus RX350 & avoid the tiny turbo problems. It's been an amazing, boring, problem free, luxury ride. I haul stuff frequently, so my back seats are usually folded flat.

2017 Subaru Outback 4 cylinder at 87,300 miles with zero repairs.
2017 Subaru. Forester 4 cylinder at 78,600 miles with one repair (replaced AC condenser at 44k miles).
They are so good and trouble-free we are a bit apprehensive about upgrading to new ones.

I live in Nevada. I own 4 vehicles two of them are Toyota hybrids. 2022 RAV4 XLE Hybrid in Silver and 2023 RAV4 SE Hybrid in Cavalry Blue. Both made in Japan. I always use 91 octane Chevron gas on all vehicles even when if it supports 87 octane. All my vehicles run perfect. Someone told me it's a waste of money. I say good quality gas is cheaper than an engine replacement.

What some fail to tell you is that 92 and 93 octanes have more cleaning agents like shell I only use. That alone is a big difference. I always get midgrade or higher and have never had issues with o2 sensors or emissions AT ALL.

You can get a Naturally Aspirated 3.5L V6 Camry in the 2018-2024 model years as an option. I have a 2024 V6. The V6 is being discontinued for 2025.

That is what happens when it's Made in the USA, which I did interject as having questionable QC. I recently bought a new car and outright asked if mine was made in Japan and lucky enough, my trim is still made there.

Yep. I'm driving a 2004 2.5 L Camry and she screams...I love driving her. Simple & pleasureable with tape deck and cd player. It was my moms! Love it. Often say, it's the best car I have. Also have an '16 A5 Coupe and '23 4Run.
I have had a 2012,2016,2019 Rav-4 first two no problems, the 2019 has had 3 recalls ,high and low pressure fuel pumps, and leaky roof rails, hybrids in northern climates and salt on the roads have had electrical shorts in exposed power wires causing failures.
I'm seriously thinking of springing for a 2024 Camry LE, maybe even pay a little over MSRP for one. Its about the last model/trim level with the fewest number of electronic gizmos; enough to make it reliable, but none of those quirkie 'convenience' features, np turbo, no hybrid.
We had one as a rental for two weeks. Great car for a family of four. Plenty of room and great on gas. We plan on buying one in late summer for the same reasons you mentioned.

I'm retired and have a paid for 2017 Toyota Camry SE. It's been a great car. And it doesn't have a lot the new electronic crap they put in newer cars.
What data are you basing your opinion of CVTs on?
They don't last as long, they are just cheaper. That is why they are on the lower models of some cars while the higher models get the regular trans.

Years ago, I had Honda Accord with a 2.5L manual trans car. I ran the hell out of that poor car and got 360,000 kilometres out of it. When I got rid of it, the engine was running great.
My 21 Tacoma with the 3.5 has been the most troublesome vehicle I had. My neighbor has the new tundra which is getting the engine replaced under warranty at

I drive a 2020 BMW 320i msport it's currently at 71,320 odometer so far there's been only one issue a recall over the airbag deployment which was done under warranty other than that no issues bout to cross 4 years ownership soon 😂

@ShakilAhmed-qp5lh the M340i should be fine it houses a B58 Engine it's one of BMW most reliable engines they have ever built and also the B48 Which sits under my 320i 😊
Thus the reason I bought a very low mileage 2021 RX, I'll wait to see how their new drivetrains work out for them. I hate to say it but I think they are getting lax in their manufacturing for both Lexus and Toyota. As for the rest of the industry, I think they are still way ahead, but maybe that's not saying too much for the past couple of years.

Having a FEW that have gone trouble free for X number of 100's of thousands miles with normal oil changes and scheduled service . But they are not blind to the fact of RECENT models having Turbo and the other problems said here , for SOME models . Let me guess ? You sell Stellantis junk .
A million miles? Every component on that engine lasted a million miles. I say BS to that. Even if you change your oil every 1,000 miles, you aren't going to get a trouble-free engine for a million miles? The next thing I'll hear is someone got 2 million miles on their trouble-free engine. Who keeps a car for a million miles. Can any transmission last a million miles. Hell no.

Toyota's hybrid drive trains are *extremely* reliable and have been for a long time. Prius has been synonymous with trouble free driving for over a decade.
Even Ford Escape Hybrids from the 2000s were *extremely* reliable, reaching 400k miles as fleet vehicles.
Hybrids are not the problem.

Axle shaft was a recall I had mine looked at it's a 2023 Tacoma and it was fine.

Dude how can the battery move and cause contact?. If you put the retaining bracket and for whatever reason the battery shears off, place any other car in that scenario, bad things will happen

I've got 2019 Toyota Avalon with a 6 cylinder that gets 40 miles a gallon on the highway & and when you nail it the rest of the traffic is blocks away it's a keeper!

They need to start using a thicker oil......those thin oils are not going to work in modern day higher performance smaller displacement engines......especially the turbos.
I’m so happy I drive a 2021 XLE Premium AWD. The Only Recall I had was well it wasn’t a recall until I made Toyota fix it. I had a bad Fuel Pump and my Car shut off while I was driving and I was like WTF. Long story short Toyota tried to tell me the bad fuel pump issue was only for the 2019-2020 and they didn’t see my VIN on the recall. Well anyway it did affect the 2021 also but anyway they replaced it with no issues since…..

In the USA, government requires higher fuel economy in the near future. Toyota must make changes to meet that demand. Perhaps we shouldn't complain about things that might happen, but haven't been systemic to Toyota currently. Is there a better car company to switch to?

I bought 2020 xse Camry 2.5 liter just before prices went crazy . I just wanted something really reliable and good on gas . I really love the car . I’m 55 I think this car may out last me . I going to drive it till one us goes . I never wanted a CVT trans so I’m happy .

In the quest for sales, Automotive Marketers have been pushing power and gadgetry as top priorites. With pressure from faster EVs, which are coupling speed AND efficiency, EVs are forcing I.C.E. engineers to attempt to duplicate EV numbers with Gasoline units. Ergo, puny and stressed out gasoline engines are squeezing out incredibly more powerful units.
Also, demand for electronic gadgets like Entertainment features that rival many customers' home systems, coupled with complex, integrated safety features are making these vehicles a great target for e-gremlins.
My feeling has been, "Keep it simple and keep it painless". But today's consumers want it all.
In that case, they better get used to the collateral aggravation that comes with that, "l want it all" mentality.
And it's why my next D.D. will be a base Toyota Corolla Hatchback without turbos or excess electronics.
Just saw today that the CEO of Toyota just got a 46% raise. Well that answers the question of whether they are ripping off their customers with their crazy msrp's.
I bought the 2023 Tacoma Off Road truck ( last of the V - 6 engine Tacoma's ) just because of Toyota going to the 4 cylinder Turbo engine ...No way
I am in Huntsville Alabama (FROM RUSSIA) on business as I always do for months every year with a Asian engineer friend of mine that used to work on the v8 INVISIBLE ENGINE that would get 500,000 miles with very little damage, now they are testing the twin turbo v6 WITH SO MANY PROBLEMS that he just doesn't understand why they are doing this. These engines have so many problems compared to the v8... maybe they will give this up in time but NO WAY EVER EVER EVER WILL A TOYOTA engineer purchase 1 of these new Turbo vehicles compared to a naturally aspirated Toyota engine,...... its better to purchase high miles older Toyota than a turbo engine by TOYOTA or not, nothing compares to The Older Toyota naturally aspirated engines

The last bulletproof reliable Toyota sold in the USA (IMO) was the 2015-2018 gen Yaris hatchback (5-MT or 4-AT), with its port-injected 1.5L 1NZ-FE engine (one of the most reliable engines that Toyota ever built, which dated back to the around 2000 or so) - though only the better-equipped/tuned (& rare to find) sporty SE trim was actually a pleasure to own/drive.
VERY HAPPY with my 2006 4Runner 4.0 V6. Literally only had to service it all these years - NO ISSUES AT ALL and it's got YEARS to go! Will probably outlive me!!! 😂 The mechanics always say how my rig is in amazing condition (I take very good care of it) and they regularly see vehicles only a few years old that are way worse than my going on 19 yr old tried and true 4Runner!

That’s why I bought a 4Runner in 2022 before the reliability went downhill with the turbo and turbo hybrid engines.

Keeping my 12' Altima that's been bulletproof and in my 13th year of driving it. That includes the bulletproof transmission that gets a drain and fill every 2 years or 25,000 miles whichever comes first.
2012 altimas have a lot of problems. But far less than the 2013 Altima, one of the least reliable modern cars.
Toyota had a reliable turbo engine before like the 2JZ-GTS and some of the turbos back in the 1990s. The 2GR-FKS is the first Toyota engine to feature the dynamic force technology . If you driven a Lexus or a Toyota with that tank of an engine which makes up to 306 HP and the are smooth as butter and sound sporty. The difference between the 2GR-FE and the 2GR-FKS is that changes they made are VVTI-E, D4S direct port hybrid injection, improved water pump design, dynamic force technology, and glass filled resin valve covers. The last time Toyota had a rough time with engines is the oil burning 2AZ-FE 2.4L inline 4 which has plagued certain model years of Camry and RAV4 is due to a GD&T error. The Honda 1.5 turbo is basically just a Honda fit engine with a turbocharger and intercooler slapped on it just to make it a compliance engine for US, CAN, and EU as quickly as possible to save a couple million bucks on engineering and development costs, it is a pretty frail engine and Honda could’ve just make a K15 1.5L 3 cylinder turbo which would be more reliable than that failed engineering parts bin project or revamp the K24 to a more efficient and powerful NA 4 cylinder just like what Toyota did.

I was actually thinking I would buy a new car to add to my Honda Del Sol. But I been watching the reviews of cars. I am starting to think that all I would be adding is headaches. My little Honda is so simple and reliable. I am thinking I will just rent a car when I need a bigger car. Or might consider a lease.
If I leased a car it would have cost me $20k so far. I bought a CPO used car with 16k miles and it has cost me only a few thousand in depreciation ($3k) so far.
I love my 2008 base model V6 Highlander, it is an outstanding A to B vehicle. 😎
Yesterday I was walking and saw a Guinness's Hyundai with a tag on back 4WD. i was abit surprised that it wasn't AWD. But then for some reason, I started thinking about you wondering why you never talk about this car or even Infinite, Nissan, Mitsubishi. I have a 2012 accord and my dad a 2015. They are both pretty basic except the 15 has a backup camera. At least the 2015 doesn't have LED lights which cost 1200-1500 each.

I just traded in my 2014 Kia sportage for a 2020 Jeep Compass Latitude, I bought the Jeep Compass Latitude with 29,800 miles on the engine for $20,000, but because I trade in my 2014 Kia Sportage, I got the Jeep for $17,000. I know that the 2020 Jeep Compass Latitude is a far better car than the 2014 Kia Sportage. So overall, is the 2020 Jeep Compass Latitude a really good car out of all the cars you analyze and review?
No, the Jeep COmpass is a rebodied Fiat 500. It's total ownership costs are very high for what it is.

Most of the issues mentioned, are indeed manufacturer quality issues. This challenges the dealer model of selling, because it’s the high cost of actioning repairs that holds back Free-Of-Charge repair work, I suspect? In other words, there might be a more responsible recall/FOC fixing regime, if the manufacturer relied on a few bigger dealers, that had a low-price method/contract for manufacturer faults. As for the ‘good old’ torque convertor auto transmission, this is right and wrong. You must buy newish vehicles, because your faith in these is unshaken. ! But once 100,000 miles is in view, these are tremendously variable in quality themselves, depending on treatment and maintenance by previous owners. They are the most pleasant to drive, in my experience if you get a good one, but repair costs are potentially able to write-off older cars, which a lot of the other issues mentioned won’t do. Everything said is valid, I just think the conclusion is that buyers would like manufacturers to fix what was a manufacturing fault, rather than fight with a dealer over the matter and/or be landed with a huge bill for incompetent guesswork. Not a quality issue w/me. Since I am now "the poors" I'm generally priced out having owned (6) Toyotas over the decades. My last vehicle purchase (used, 1 owner, low miles) was a Nissan Frontier XCab, 4.0L V6, 4WD with 6 spd manual transmission. It's rock solid and well-behaved. Minimal technology. The "buy" was intentional. I hope it is my last vehicle.

I won't touch an EV, a Hybrid, or a 4-cylinder with Turbos.
Even the Camries had transmission problems early on the 2017-2019 had high failure rates that Toyota fixed. Technology is so complicated due to EPA regulations it takes Toyota a couple years to make them reliable. Right now I am very impressed with Mazda could they be about to surpass Toyota as the most reliable brand? They get better every year!

I did my own little survey and you know what people want. They want a car or truck with a key, ignition power windows, power seats, air conditioning, FM and Bluetooth. That’s it nothing else we don’t care you never use it all that electronic shit goes up and smoke and costs you a fortune to fix just give me a good old reliable car.

There is nothing wrong with a CVT, as long as the customer understands the differences, "operation / maintenance / repair or rebuild".
The new turbo in the tundra Barely gets better mpg than the v8. 19 at best is what im reading in the tundra blogs.
I lock my cruise in at 75 mph on my '18 Tundra 5.7 and I get 16-17 mpg's on the highway and I'm TOTALLY satisfied with that👍🏽

Highlander hybrid is the most reliable hybrid suv. Go speak to all hybrid engineers they will tell you the same. Minor issues will be solved along the way
So many people out there are still clinging on to reputations of reliability from generations of Honda’s and Toyota’s from years past. It will probably take them another 10 years to catch on to the fact that Toyota and Honda don’t have a magic wand.
I just bought a 2021 Highlander L, no Hybrid, and I am happy with that. I think the hybrids and electrics are all way over priced, and very new technology, increasing risk. By paying so much for a brand new hybrid or electric vehicle, you are, in effect, pre-paying what you would have spent on gas over the following 5 years. I paid $29k for 2021 Highlander with low miles and looking forward to joining the 500k-mile club one day. The 3.5L non-turbo engine engine in the Highlander is going to be reliable and has plenty of power, it can tow 5,000 pounds. Not to mention it runs on regular gas, with turbo you'll need to pay for premium gasoline. I'll wait until electric tech pricing comes down to a reasonable price.

‘21/22 model year vehicles were built in the covid heyday so that’s an issue for any car manufacturer. FORD had 56 recalls in 2023 . Toyota is still doing well and at least you know they will fix problems for years to come
At the end of the day. Toyota still remains as the benchmark of quality control. All manufacturers tried to copy the Toyota Production System b bone comes close. Dr. W Edward Deming was the man that taught Toyota on quality and was the first Japanese manufacturer to be awarded the Deming Prize. I still drive my 2006 Camry SE still to this day.
