An exclusive series of Living Legends Music interviews with Johnny Winter. Part 2 of 5. Recorded on November 20th, 2008 at the Seawalk Hotel in Jacksonville Beach, FL.
Johnny Winter got me into guitar playing ,my first concert was seeing Johnny live in 1976,he was incredible. He did a signing in Hamilton Canada 2014,I didn't know about,it still haunts me to this day.
I met him a couple of times. He was such a nice man and a national treasure as well. His music and legend will out live us all.
Johnny was a real good guy down to earth he didn't act better than anyone else he treated people the way they treated him. Great guy..
I shed a tear when I saw this. Johnny was a good soul. He was a soft spoken, unpretentious southern gentleman who happened to be, along with his brother, and very talented rock/ blues musician. I was thinking about interviews, for example with someone like Dave Grohl who uses the F word all the time. Johnny, didn't do that in interviews. He just loved his music, and even though fame earned him financial security, he hated being worshiped. He just loved his blues.
The best ever! It's not even a guitar anymore when Johnny plays it. It's something else, like an extension of his soul. It's beyond music. It's SUPERMUSIC!!!
There's a palpable aura of loneliness and sadness surrounding Winter. In each of these clips, you can hear the interviewer reacting to it. What a fascinating character. Deserves canonization for the Muddy Waters albums he helmed near the end of Muddy's life.
Man Johnny and Muddy doing "Can't be Satisfied" on the Blues Sky label is blues heaven!!!
Very economical with his answers.
talented....both he and his brother are amazing. lots of people sing the blues - and there are many, many talented folks out there, but for me it was always johnny winter. love the man.
A fan always...love your guitar genius... I have most every album and have seen you many times...you are truly Johnny "Cool Daddy!!!" God Bless You.
So great to see him speak after loving his stuff all these years................
A humble man.
great !!! LUV to be a part of them living on earth
Mean Town Blues on the live album and just try to sit still. Blows me away every time!
I love it that he called him "daddy", everybody always says oldman.
Johnny was my first concert as a 14-year-old in 1975, instant lifelong fan, miss him
The cream rises to the top.
He sounds very wise.
Johnny is a legend; only one of him to come along. Playing in a nightclub at 12 years old and playing as good as the old blues greats that he loved. What a talent. Unfortunately, dying prematurely from emphysema and pneumonia was a product of his lifestyle. You can't smoke, drink, and do drugs without it negatively affecting your body.
Used to see him downtown at H&H MUSIC STORE, where he shopped.
Houston
God bless the Guitar King!He is the music himself from bottom to top!
Amen
Just seen him on letterman and he kick ass he looked clean and sober
gotta agree with previous poster. jw is really good
Johnny Winter doesn't think he'd do anything different in his career?!
He's okay with his Manager ripping him off for DECADES and keeping him supplied with Pills that dulled his creativity and caused him to become a Recluse?
I've read Johnny's biography and it's hard not to conclude that, in many ways, Johnny was his own worst enemy.
His long term Drug Problems kept Johnny from growing as an Artist.
The deaths of his bandmates, Randy Jo Hobbs and Richard Hughes are particularly tragic because these guys were extremely talented musicians and Johnny dumping them pushed them into a fatal downward spiral.
Just say no to drugs, kids!
@Toris93 "Being worshipped is not fun, being appreciated is great, being worshipped is not somethin u wanna do."
@lazer70 : Johnny, the last I heard, was addicted to Xanax, a benzodiazepine in the same family as Valium (I had the same addiction and went through rehab for it). The last couple of times I've seen him, an addiction to some sort of benzo was apparent. When you compare his live performances today to his greatest of the last 35 years ago, you can readily observe how much drugs can permanently addle your brain.
Yeah. The only thing worse than being worshipped is NOT being worshipped.
@lazer70
The 1st time i saw him live was in 1970.
He was about 26 yrs old.
Back then alot of us kids never thought he'd make it to 30 yrs old.
He entered a rehab and came back in '73. JW has strong genetics..i think his father lived to be over 90 yrs old.
One can never tell..look at Keith Richards.
I think Teddy Slatus had alot to do with keeping JW "sedated" for many yrs. (according to Paul Nelson).
I hope JW lives on to be 100.
@Dogheadj : Bonus Trivia: Ozzy's current addiction is to Klonopin (clonazapam), another benzodiazepine addiction I share (Still in the same drug family as Valium, Xanax, Librium, Serax, etc.).
yo, beerustum... whether u pay for a show or see him for free, , johnny on his worst day is still a gift, bro. u know? dude hit it hard bak in the day, and inspite of his efforts, STILL managed to become a legend. u shuld accomplish a fraction of that and then still hold ur water. not kool.
Tough interview - replies with one sentence........
@motownharry
Yes, Johnny played on that same 1971 track with LaCroix(who has an AMAZING voice). Sang it as great as Ray Charles did.
I understand what you mean however, for me,Edgar comes from a jazz/classical music background and always sounded like a Junior Walker clone.
I love Edgar's stuff but he can be abit tedious as can his Scientology connection.(sorry to E.W fans , just my opinion)
Johnny is just pure gutbucket Blues and completely natural.
Wow, like my parents... Want me to be a lawyer when I'd rather play music.
Thank god he didn't become a lawyer!!
the first question alone is fucked up. why is it accepted that you should be scared to go to a black club? i played bass in all black groups in the 80's and went to black clubs all the time in dayton ohio. never once had an issue
@mamasboy815 Mama, I don't quite get why you feel I lack humility. I've been a fan of Johnny's for 40 years, and was in no way demeaning him. And I do know alot about cause, having been through rehab 5 times. I won't tell you what business I'm in, but I can assure you I know about life on the road as a musician.
Again, I'm not faulting Johnny. That would ne the pot calling the kettle black. Sorry you took offense.
He's somewhat monosyllabic in interviews
What's wrong with his right eye?
He's been clean for 30 years, to the best of my knowledge. I'm not sure his physical state is attributable to his one-time drug use.
Pocahontas Heineken lol he was sober begin 2000 so he lived maybe 14 years sober otherwise he died probably in 2004-2005
I've seen Johnny over 20 times!
The last time was 96' and he was so fucked up, so was the band, they sounded horrible------It broke my fucking heart into a million fragments of shit!!!!!!!!
um yeah the man is 65. I dont see your example.
"i don't think I'll do anything different"...jesus take a look at yourself man!!! a corpse is more responsive to questions or to life than you...I really LOVE your work and constantly listen to your music but jesus seeing you like this breaks my heart.
It was his life, his choices, Pollyanna.
Everybody gets old, it will happen to you.
Ironic that people still want to worship him. Worship Christ, not some guitar player.
that guitar player actually existed unlike Christ
@@hendrixj9901 You don't exist either. You will be deleted and forgotten for eternity. Live it up, it's all you are getting.
@@bob733333 did I hurt your feelings?
@@hendrixj9901 No. Why do you ask?
@@bob733333 seems like I pushed your buttons lol
Johnny is sadly a living example of why hard drugs and booze are BAD for you.
bite a fart
What about his blindness and his inability to be out in the sun’s radians ! You are ignoring facts Johnny had challenges you will never face
if u did not want to be worshipped u should not have done the song baby
Spoken like a drummer
