BE SURE TO WATCH THIS RELATED VIDEO: • SMART GARAGE DOOR OPEN...
In this video I explain the features of the compact Smartthings - Multipurpose Contact Sensor. I show how to pair this sensor device with the Smartthings Hub as well as the Echo PLUS Speaker/Hub.
If you pair it to the Smartthings Hub it can do these things:
    - Work as a standard door/window contact sensor
    - You have the option to turn it into a Tilt-Sensor
    - Displays battery life on the unit
    - Displays room temperature
    - Ability to send alerts, turn lights on when you arrive
    - Ability to adjust your Nest or Eco-bee Smart Thermostat when the room reaches a certain temperature
If you pair it to the Echo + Hub it can do these things:
    - Work as a standard door/window contact sensor
    - Trigger Alexa to say something (custom sentence, play music, tell you the weather, traffic ands more)
    - Ability to send alerts, turn lights on when you arrive
    - Ability to adjust your Nest or Eco-bee Smart Thermostat when the room reaches a certain temperature

Thanks for the video. I bought a Samsung Multipurpose sensor today without being 100% sure that it will work with Echo plus without the help of smartthings hub. I had a fair idea that it might work because Echo plus has zigbee hub built-in. I took a chance for I was getting the sensor for CAD10 on clearance sale! Impulsive buy. Came home, searched and found your video, browsed through it and started setting up my sensor. Voila! It worked!. Surprise find. It senses and reports room temperature too!

I have never used Smartthings devices/products. I don't use Alexa. Will Smartthings be able to send a notification to my phone, (which im assuming I will need to run their app) if the device senses the door being open?

  • @grantos8276

You only need one half of the sensor, as SmartThings has the option to set it for garage door use.
As the sensor has an axis/orientation built in

Todd, I'm curious why didn't you just enable the SmartThings Skill within the Alexa App? That way you can easily have Alexa discover all of your SmartThings devices, and more importantly, you can accomplish the same automation having your Garage Door announcements play through the less expensive Echo Dots, while avoiding the extra cost of associated with the Echo Plus.

Can you have also have an announcement be made if you pair the tilt sensor with the smart things hub or does that feature only work using the contact sensor and an Echo hub? I like the idea of the tilt sensor but want an announcement.

You will need an Amazon device that recognizes ZigBee devices. So you have to purchase an Amazon Echo that has Zigbee included. The echo dot will not have this.

My home alarm system has a garage door sensor. I have successfully connected the home alarm to SmartThings using an EnvisaLink card. Works great. The problem is Alexa/Echó devices have no If then else features. Like if I ask Alexa’s to close my garage door, it has no way to determine, if door is closed, do not close it, as the eWeLink will open it (eWeLink does not have different commands to open & close). I can do it with SmartRules, but sadly eWeLink does not connect to SmartThings. It would be great if I asked Alexa to close garage door, it would evaluate the status of the sensor and if the door is open tell eWeLink to close it, but if it detects the door is already closed, simply tell me, door is already closed and end routine without triggering the eWeLink.

Open or close commends can be used for garage door. What about the front gate? How do we tell if the gate is opened or closed? I called alexa to "open the gate", then the gate opens. I called alexa again to "open the gate", then the gate closes.

Hello JeeWaye, You need at least one ECHO PLUS, in your household. Echo PLUS will connect to smart devices like sensors and light bulbs and smart plugs, etc. You can usually find a nice refurbished Echo Plus for a nice price. Check out my links to them in the video description. Once you have your smart devices paired to an Echo Plus, you'll be able to control them with any Echo device in your household (like the Dots). Hope this helps you :) Todd

Here's what it states: Requirements: Must have SmartThings App and SmartThings Hub or compatible device with SmartThings Hub functionality (connected devices sold separately)
Compatibility: Works with Google, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings, and Zigbee communication protocols.

Did I miss something? I was excited to watch this because you started the video by opening and closing the garage door using alexa. But then I saw no reference to it in the video. Nothing in the products listing for the video. I have a Chamberlain MyQ opener which will allow alexa to close the door, but not open it "for security purposes". I was waiting to see how you accomplished it, then nothing.
