I just graduated this year with my BFA in graphic design and I really connected with this video. I was recently looking back at the work I did through just the last 4 years of college and reflecting on my journey. It's so interesting to see the different artistic phases I've gone through as well as my growth as a creative. My work has varied a lot in subject matter, medium, style, etc, but it's cool to be able to draw connections between different projects I've done over the years. Now, I'm excited to continue my career and look towards the future, but I will always try to remember to take time to look back because I think it's a great way to gain some insight on myself and can even help me make decisions regarding where I go next. PS. I began watching your channel back in 2016 when I started college, so it's been really cool to watch you're journey over the years too. You make beautiful work and I'm so excited to see where you go next!
Hello I am thinking about going to university for graphic design do you have any advice to help me prepare myself? Like what should I expect to be doing? Anything in general really
@@americaalaniz8863 I think for me it was just important to be open-minded and willing to try new things! I went into school thinking I'd just be taught photoshop and how to make logos, but I ended up doing so much more. I did stuff like painting, sculpture, photography, videography, bookmaking, screen printing, app design, coding, and a lot more. I was able to figure out what I enjoyed while gaining specific skills in other areas. Some things I hated but I think everything is worth trying because I wouldn't have found my current career path if I hadn't tried. Also having that wide skill set will be super helpful once you graduate since nowadays a lot of employers want designers to be super multifaceted. Ohhhhh also, be ready for critiques. Depending on your professors/peers critiques can get very very serious. Never take anything personally but use it to understand other people's points of view (although take it with a grain of salt since art is subjective in the end). Crits are so important to improving your craft! But yeah, it's hard to give specifics on what to expect since design programs can be very very different depending on what university you go to. In the end, design is an awesome major to be in so I'm sure you'll love it! Hope this at least helps a little

I'm currently in Grade-9 will be in 10th real quick (Months pass like anything lol) and I actually had a really BAD year I made nearly NO art. It gave a full piece of metal breakdown as well as I guess depression :( But I really really really hope from my heart that after watching Robin's Video and comments like yours I can get motivated and start it again and explore. I know I have my boards next year and it's gonna super difficult for me to maintain both arts and studies but I'll give my best. This year too was neither good for my academics nor personal growth. But we always have a hope! so I hope I can do the best for myself in the coming time :)

I got a massive art block 2 years ago, after about 18 very productive months. I was mentally exhausted, and I put a lot of pressure to stay « on track ». And then I couldn’t. I tried other things, sewing, embroidery, dice making, and I’m finally feeling the need to draw and paint like it’s starting to make sense again. I feel like I have things to « say ». I know other people who have the same experience, taking a break from « serious Art » and making things, like little things that bring you joy, without the need for it to be perfect or to serve a purpose, can really help to manage those times of doubt or burnout. Also, thank you for this video (and frankly all the others), it’s so great to have this insight ! I wish you a lot of happy painting.
I got chills when you said that your work preparing for your senior show was after you lost your dad. When I saw a clip and some of the pieces from that show on a previous video, I immediately thought of losing my dad and I remember it made my stomach turn because you made visible the grief, vacancy, yearning that I felt during that time, but could never have fully described. It’s a horrible thing to go through, but wow, did you create some powerful work out of it. I bet your dad would be so proud.

The larger pieces from 2019 that you showed at the end, especially the ones of the green and blue figures in motion really seem to encapsulate and synthesize so many of the previous styles you've developed. They're full of natural textures and have the emotional underpinning of a landscape, but the people in motion also add in the feeling of water from your waves (i especially see that in the two green dancers). But then there is also a tenderness to the way that you paint people that i really appreciate and that has been present since those first portraits you showed. I think it lies in leaving them somewhat incomplete? Hiding the faces of the two green dancers feels like it lives in that same emotional space. I'll be honest, a whole ago, the first time you showed the painting of the two green dancers in a video i had to pause the video just to stare at it because it is MESMERIZING. It struck me as so different from the rest of your work, but the more i looked at it, and now at the blue one as well, they both seem like such logical progressions from the rest of your work. I so appreciate this video. As an artist, it is so wild to look back at my old work, and this is such a helpful framework for doing that and being intentional with how i grow through my work. Thank you!
i feel like i will react to your nice comment and hope robin will read. (please, i'm not qualified, so anyone take whatever from this) this painting with the two dancers: rather brilliant idea; surely great craftsmanship in it; i am sure it looks even better in person; BUT: i kind of miss some more details on the figures, maybe on their clothes. interior designers use this rule: you should have 3 levels of textures in a room - large shapes, medium patterns and then some tiny sophisticated patterns (e.g. on cushions or on pictures on the walls). that's what i mean. robin has asked for critique, hasn't she. LOL :-)

Sometimes I wish I took a fine art course.. I chose a general art course and it wasn't for me, mixed with other problems at that time, I just couldn't do it.. I didn't like the inattentive teachers, lack of direction and the focus on modern and abstract art, especially for a first year. I didn't go for a fine art course, because the description of the general art course was more approachable.. I don't know if I'll ever be a professional artist, but I know that regardless of getting educated or not, I can make art and be proud of it. ^^

i had a horrible time in art school in 2009, made me so discouraged and made me feel like a failure. now ten years later i wish i hadnt stopped practicing art. i also had a lot of pent up childhood trauma that made me not believe that anything i would create would be worth anything to anyone. youre so lucky that you had the opportunity to be an artist. also lucky that you had a good relationship with your dad.
I'm sorry you didn't have a good childhood. Sorry you felt discouraged. I don't feel encouraged to continue art or discouraged. Art is hard. But if you have a talent for it then maybe you could try and take it up again. You can enjoy art at any age. My granny began taking art classes a few years back when she was around 73. She's somewhere around 77 and she loves art. Framing it and enjoying people asking her about it.
I loved seeing your development over the years! I am excited to see where you go. I especially loved the more stylized, illustrative landscapes you were doing, or the landscapes with unusual colors. I've been developing a lot as an artist, trying to get good enough to sell my work. I really want to take time off from work to focus on it and learn more, but COVID has made that impossible for now. I took and still take a lot of inspiration from your videos about loving your artist journey, even the lows, and embracing your creativity and pace.
This was refreshing to watch, as I'm preparing to finish my music degree, and have anxieties that I should have gone to school for art instead. Post graduation the world is very open to explore, and continue to grow/learn in whatever direction.
I'm going to school for something completely different but I have always been an artist first. Every time I watch your videos, you inspire me to keep making more art. It can be hard with school and other things in life but I'm going to hopefully try to make more pieces instead of little silly things. Especially since I've been having a creative block almost all year!

Wow, Robin! Thank you for sharing your art and thoughts about going forward. I'm sorry that your Dad passed away. I love your water and wave paintings. I love the water because my Dad loved the water and we spent a lot of time fishing and philosophysing both on the water and at the water's edge. I love your portaiture, too. I love that you were an art teacher to the young ones and worked it around core subjects. I spent a year reading about those who taught the exact curriculum with the intention of starting an afterschool program. I actually really loved the question you posed "Where does your mind go when you let it wander?" I'm currently working on my pieces for my Senior Exhibition next semester. I'm focusing on daydreams and I think I've been kind of sucking the fun and actual meaning out of what I intended to explore. For some reason your question really brought me back to why I chose that subject in the first place. It was so nice as a soon to be graduating senior to get to see everything you've done since graduating. Post grad life seems so daunting and new and it's really comforting to get to see what it can look like for an artist.

I too have struggled with direction since I finished my undergrad. I would encourage you to wait on a grad program for the time. My reasons are simple. First, there is little to no incentive financially to have a grad level degree unless teaching is your jam. Second, you are very talented and extremely articulate. That gives you a platform that few can access. Lastly, you are a leader, help the rest of us see the path to success. Life has a way for each of us to be successful and you are giving us a real view into that life.

I'm not at an art school but I am an art major. I've realized that a lot of what I'm being taught is stuff I already know which is not as interesting, however, it's been extremely useful. Being able to get consistent practice in a certain media or topic has helped a ton as I jump mediums very often. One think I like about your work and your videos is that it inspires me to push how I do art. I'm a fast artist, cranking paintings out in 4 hours some times but lately I've been wanting to try and push that time frame so I can start improving. Seeing your process the last few years has really influenced that for me I think. Not giving up at certain parts in the painting or illustration and working on it until it's something that isn't just alright but informative. I'm working on a monochrome painting right now with acrylics of a woman, all in orange, and it's just nice to paint and not worry too much on if fitting all my boxes. Much like you and landscapes, I've always focused on the face and portraits so it's so cool to see my progress the last few years. Sorry if none of this makes sense - kind of rambling. Haven't strung these thoughts together just yet. Thanks for getting my thoughts going on where I want to go with my work
I LOVE your art journey! It makes me feel like i shouldn't be afraid to try different styles or topics, instead of feeling like im stuck doing one type of painting.
I'm not sure on the insight side but I was/am working on a piece while listening to this. I'm doing the base under sketch of a painting of Hozier. A lot of shit has been going on lately for me, my health is crashing a lot all though somehow not covid related. I'm a senior in high school and have been online since last March which was when I last painted actually and it's looking like we may not go back at all. I had an insane schedule including multiple history and science classes and AP's, combining that with college and everything else one could imagine the stress levels. I've always been high strung and I've always had issues but with so many things piling up, it turned me off of art, of music, reading, and honestly most things I loved. That leads into the beginning of this November I started having seizures and was briefly hospitalized. I'm now signed up to see like 5 different specialists and its been a lot. I contacted my principle and am now actually dropping the classes I don't need to graduate and decided I need to do things for me. I've started doing musicals live here on youtube with a group I'm in and I noticed these 18x24 inch canvases I have propped up on against my wall. I've been doing art since before I could even read and I started doing portraits around six years ago. I've always loved people and realism. I got a lot more enjoyment focusing on anatomy vs color (which has lead to a struggle there rip). When it came to paint I mostly did watercolor but somehow all but four of my tubes went missing so I'm taking this as a hint to get back into acrylics. Hozier is my favorite artists, every single part of his music speaks to me in a way I couldn't possibly explain so I'm taking this time to paint one of things I love most. I'm really hoping I get better with color and color theory, and I'm really hoping to keep the patience and finish this massive piece.

I am so happy that you included the pennies! I had been watching your channel a bit before then, but that was the time where I started tuning into every video. One of my favorite things about this channel is how you incorporate psychology-related subjects in your journey, including mindfulness. Keep being you and keep growing you!
Your videos are so helpful. I started seriously doing art (mostly painting) about two years ago, and I went back to school to get my second BA in art history with minors in new media and art. I've also recently started a contract job to do design and illustrations for a magazine. Art is becoming a big part of my life, and I get a lot of insight from your videos and experiences.
I hope someday you get to visit County Donegal, Ireland. The quality of the light here is something special. It would be really interesting to see your representation of our landscape and seascapes.
I always love how mindful and thought provoking your videos are. And they always seem to come (or I end up watching them) when I’m in a more motivated mood to refocus on my art. I recently put in my resignation letter for a job that was taking up too much of my emotional energy and so far it’s completely been the right decision. Just knowing its going to end and that I’m gonna be entering a different chapter of my life is both relieving and reinvigorating. I don’t have a degree or the level of artistic training I would get from it but I’ve been growing as an artist for about 6 years now myself. I didn’t “really” start until my junior year of high school and it’s funny to me that I can see similarities in my last six years to yours, even with the far less experience. 2017-2018 was when I created the most, it was also when I was taking better care of my physical health and when I was in art classes forcing me to draw all the time. I miss and feel like I’m constantly striving for that level of productivity and I constantly have ideas but never find the motivation to execute them. Hopefully I can find it in this new chapter ahead of me, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for you as well ❤️
It's been an interesting six years. I didn't study art, but I keep being drawn back to it. I seem to lack your work ethic, which is a symptom of having no real belief in my ability, and I'm dogged by depression (which might be my lack of commitment). I regret not going for my PhD, but I'm not sure the benefits would be the same for fine art. I miss writing papers, of all things. I started watching because you embodied an intensely bright creativity with a natural empathy and grace. (And hella pretty.) I like seeing your evolution as it gives a great model of what an artist's life is like, which makes it all seem a little more real, if that makes any sense.
This video was really inspiring. Even when you’ve stepped back from working on your art, you still produced so much. I love how focused you’ve been, consistently, on working at areas in which you felt that you lacked, as well as creating such exploratory work.
I always wanted to be an artist but I'm struggling with it so I admire you going forward with your degree and post art. I noticed as you were talking that the time around your dad's passing, you painted water. Water in dreams is symbolic of emotions. Then when you separated from hubby, you painted landscapes perhaps symbolic of freedom. I found this very interesting of your work.
Robin your art is amazing. I live in the UK and study art for GCSE's. Your art inspires and motivates me to do my very best. Though I'm currently dieing I will inevitably continue with art for A-level and hopefully I will get an A* at the end of this year.

I think your landscape and ocean paintings are where you shine. Just a suggestion but I think you should consider larger canvases with 1 1/2 inch profiles because that is what people want to hang on their walls. Along those lines if you want to sell art to the public then considering what people will want to display over their sofa or bed will help you create art that will sell and sell for more money. Just my two cents.
Rundhille Andallo You are assuming. I started out doing my degree at uni. Life happened and had to complete 90% online. You need to change your perspective otherwise life will be difficult for you.

I didn’t choose anything life happened and I made the best of it. Instead of thinking it sucks be grateful your at home safe. Change your perspective. It’ll do wonders for your life, best wishes.

This is really neat to see. It's always fun to go through your old stuff, especially the bad stuff. I'm still trying to figure out what art means to me and why I wanted to make it. I keep hoping that when I get back to it, I'll somehow improve, despite not practicing, that maybe i needed the break to relax and clean the mental gears, so to speak. I really wanted to be an artist, and it just came to feel hopeless for me. But I think I'm starting to get my grip back, and maybe through the process, just making things, maybe I can figure out why I want to make art.

I commend your efforts to catalogue your art journey and believe that you have created a wonderful path so far. I feel that I could go on and on, I will offer just this: I was trained in traditional art methods. I had to change directions many times to keep the “rent” paid. I even had to take a break from creating Art pieces to focus on learning and teaching digital techniques and at one point diverging into computer repair/maintenance! YOU CAN keep going in the direction that brings you joy! I believe that there are so many way to be successful in an Art career. I believe you have a successful one already! You can continue the direction you are going and take time for any side roads that you want to go down! I just want you to believe in yourself and never give up on your art journey. Yes, it can be hard but if you have joy in your life and works, is there really another path that you want? I also spent time teaching in school and I did not have time for my own art, one of the reasons I had to leave teaching in the school setting! The other big reason? Paperwork! I was drowning in pink slips and green slips ghaaaaah! Well I have gone on to long, I appreciate your art and your attitude, I believe that you are truly inspirational and I believe in you! I bet your thinking, man this guy can’t make a short comment, ever! Well you take care, be safe and have a lovely day!

I was interested in learning how to draw and paint landscapes. I was wondering if it's ok to "copy" a landscape picture by just looking at it and doing exactly what you see.
rather impressive to see all your works together! i'm not really qualified, but: your conclusions are very correct for you (prefer landscape, go larger but detailed, try mixedmedia, etc.). i like e.g. Kevin Peterson or Tim Okamura or Kehinde Wiley or Cesar Santos (sure there's more of them). i think they create things which some people identify with strongly, the art uplifts the viewers and buyers on their soul. it's a good intention to seriously uplift people. or to create beauty for the world when it might seem not as beautiful. it's up to us - the Defenders of Beauty! :-) so, to identify self with a landscape is rather tricky. OR the subject is strikingly beautiful and special (think perfect Tahiti wave playing with 1000 hues of blue), OR the viewer personally loves the place, OR some other way it would convey a message or a story (a winding road, special detail, e.g.). this will be key for you. you could try to combine landscape with some persons in it. like - a portrait with her hair in the wind and bang - a horizon with mountains on her left. or little persons on a mountain ridge - bang with flamingos. (why am i telling my ideas, ha?) it's going to take some work but we all trust you! (LOL) being you i would even ask fans for focused critique of work in progress (like billie eilish had a bunch of songs and asked 20 different music-genre lovers to review and only afterwards published). ah, long one. keep up the great motivation work you do!
I quit art for almost 6 years and getting back into it was really hard. It was a struggle to get back to where I wanted to be with my skill, and I learned patience was my main skill I had to relearn. Was there anything you learned from getting back into art?
hmm thats so interesting. yeah, I think that makes sense. Maybe my lesson is how humbling it is to craft a skill and put in the work over time. Reality is different from what our imaginations project.

I was able to figure out what I enjoyed while gaining specific skills in other areas. Some things I hated but I think everything is worth trying because I wouldn't have found my current career path if I hadn't tried. Also having that wide skill set will be super helpful once you graduate since nowadays a lot of employers want designers to be super multifaceted.
Ohhhhh also, be ready for critiques. Depending on your professors/peers critiques can get very very serious. Never take anything personally but use it to understand other people's points of view (although take it with a grain of salt since art is subjective in the end). Crits are so important to improving your craft!
But yeah, it's hard to give specifics on what to expect since design programs can be very very different depending on what university you go to. In the end, design is an awesome major to be in so I'm sure you'll love it! Hope this at least helps a little

I'm currently in Grade-9 will be in 10th real quick (Months pass like anything lol) and I actually had a really BAD year I made nearly NO art. It gave a full piece of metal breakdown as well as I guess depression :( But I really really really hope from my heart that after watching Robin's Video and comments like yours I can get motivated and start it again and explore. I know I have my boards next year and it's gonna super difficult for me to maintain both arts and studies but I'll give my best. This year too was neither good for my academics nor personal growth. But we always have a hope! so I hope I can do the best for myself in the coming time :)

I got a massive art block 2 years ago, after about 18 very productive months. I was mentally exhausted, and I put a lot of pressure to stay « on track ». And then I couldn’t.
I tried other things, sewing, embroidery, dice making, and I’m finally feeling the need to draw and paint like it’s starting to make sense again. I feel like I have things to « say ».
I know other people who have the same experience, taking a break from « serious Art » and making things, like little things that bring you joy, without the need for it to be perfect or to serve a purpose, can really help to manage those times of doubt or burnout.
Also, thank you for this video (and frankly all the others), it’s so great to have this insight ! I wish you a lot of happy painting.

I got chills when you said that your work preparing for your senior show was after you lost your dad. When I saw a clip and some of the pieces from that show on a previous video, I immediately thought of losing my dad and I remember it made my stomach turn because you made visible the grief, vacancy, yearning that I felt during that time, but could never have fully described. It’s a horrible thing to go through, but wow, did you create some powerful work out of it. I bet your dad would be so proud.
Currently in my senior year of my BFA. Your videos from several years were actually very influential in my decision to become an artist, so I love seeing the progress you have made!

That self portrait is one of my favorites that you’ve done as well. It’s beautiful. You caught all of your features perfectly.
The larger pieces from 2019 that you showed at the end, especially the ones of the green and blue figures in motion really seem to encapsulate and synthesize so many of the previous styles you've developed. They're full of natural textures and have the emotional underpinning of a landscape, but the people in motion also add in the feeling of water from your waves (i especially see that in the two green dancers). But then there is also a tenderness to the way that you paint people that i really appreciate and that has been present since those first portraits you showed. I think it lies in leaving them somewhat incomplete? Hiding the faces of the two green dancers feels like it lives in that same emotional space.
I'll be honest, a whole ago, the first time you showed the painting of the two green dancers in a video i had to pause the video just to stare at it because it is MESMERIZING. It struck me as so different from the rest of your work, but the more i looked at it, and now at the blue one as well, they both seem like such logical progressions from the rest of your work.
I so appreciate this video. As an artist, it is so wild to look back at my old work, and this is such a helpful framework for doing that and being intentional with how i grow through my work. Thank you!
i feel like i will react to your nice comment and hope robin will read. (please, i'm not qualified, so anyone take whatever from this) this painting with the two dancers: rather brilliant idea; surely great craftsmanship in it; i am sure it looks even better in person; BUT: i kind of miss some more details on the figures, maybe on their clothes. interior designers use this rule: you should have 3 levels of textures in a room - large shapes, medium patterns and then some tiny sophisticated patterns (e.g. on cushions or on pictures on the walls). that's what i mean. robin has asked for critique, hasn't she. LOL :-)

Sometimes I wish I took a fine art course.. I chose a general art course and it wasn't for me, mixed with other problems at that time, I just couldn't do it.. I didn't like the inattentive teachers, lack of direction and the focus on modern and abstract art, especially for a first year. I didn't go for a fine art course, because the description of the general art course was more approachable.. I don't know if I'll ever be a professional artist, but I know that regardless of getting educated or not, I can make art and be proud of it. ^^

i had a horrible time in art school in 2009, made me so discouraged and made me feel like a failure. now ten years later i wish i hadnt stopped practicing art. i also had a lot of pent up childhood trauma that made me not believe that anything i would create would be worth anything to anyone. youre so lucky that you had the opportunity to be an artist. also lucky that you had a good relationship with your dad.
I'm sorry you didn't have a good childhood. Sorry you felt discouraged. I don't feel encouraged to continue art or discouraged. Art is hard. But if you have a talent for it then maybe you could try and take it up again.
You can enjoy art at any age. My granny began taking art classes a few years back when she was around 73. She's somewhere around 77 and she loves art. Framing it and enjoying people asking her about it.

I loved seeing your development over the years! I am excited to see where you go. I especially loved the more stylized, illustrative landscapes you were doing, or the landscapes with unusual colors.
I've been developing a lot as an artist, trying to get good enough to sell my work. I really want to take time off from work to focus on it and learn more, but COVID has made that impossible for now. I took and still take a lot of inspiration from your videos about loving your artist journey, even the lows, and embracing your creativity and pace.
This was refreshing to watch, as I'm preparing to finish my music degree, and have anxieties that I should have gone to school for art instead. Post graduation the world is very open to explore, and continue to grow/learn in whatever direction.

I'm going to school for something completely different but I have always been an artist first. Every time I watch your videos, you inspire me to keep making more art. It can be hard with school and other things in life but I'm going to hopefully try to make more pieces instead of little silly things. I love the water because my Dad loved the water and we spent a lot of time fishing and philosophysing both on the water and at the water's edge. I love your portaiture, too. I love that you were an art teacher to the young ones and worked it around core subjects. I spent a year reading about those who taught the exact curriculum with the intention of starting an afterschool program. I actually really loved the question you posed "Where does your mind go when you let it wander?" I'm currently working on my pieces for my Senior Exhibition next semester. I'm focusing on daydreams and I think I've been kind of sucking the fun and actual meaning out of what I intended to explore. For some reason your question really brought me back to why I chose that subject in the first place. It was so nice as a soon to be graduating senior to get to see everything you've done since graduating. Post grad life seems so daunting and new and it's really comforting to get to see what it can look like for an artist.

I too have struggled with direction since I finished my undergrad. I would encourage you to wait on a grad program for the time. My reasons are simple. First, there is little to no incentive financially to have a grad level degree unless teaching is your jam. Second, you are very talented and extremely articulate. That gives you a platform that few can access. Lastly, you are a leader, help the rest of us see the path to success.
Life has a way for each of us to be successful and you are giving us a real view into that life.

I'm not at an art school but I am an art major. I've realized that a lot of what I'm being taught is stuff I already know which is not as interesting, however, it's been extremely useful. Being able to get consistent practice in a certain media or topic has helped a ton as I jump mediums very often.
One think I like about your work and your videos is that it inspires me to push how I do art. I'm a fast artist, cranking paintings out in 4 hours some times but lately I've been wanting to try and push that time frame so I can start improving. Seeing your process the last few years has really influenced that for me I think. Not giving up at certain parts in the painting or illustration and working on it until it's something that isn't just alright but informative.
I'm working on a monochrome painting right now with acrylics of a woman, all in orange, and it's just nice to paint and not worry too much on if fitting all my boxes. Much like you and landscapes, I've always focused on the face and portraits so it's so cool to see my progress the last few years. Sorry if none of this makes sense - kind of rambling. Haven't strung these thoughts together just yet. Thanks for getting my thoughts going on where I want to go with my work
I LOVE your art journey! It makes me feel like i shouldn't be afraid to try different styles or topics, instead of feeling like im stuck doing one type of painting.
I'm not sure on the insight side but I was/am working on a piece while listening to this. I'm doing the base under sketch of a painting of Hozier. A lot of shit has been going on lately for me, my health is crashing a lot all though somehow not covid related. I'm a senior in high school and have been online since last March which was when I last painted actually and it's looking like we may not go back at all. I had an insane schedule including multiple history and science classes and AP's, combining that with college and everything else one could imagine the stress levels. I've always been high strung and I've always had issues but with so many things piling up, it turned me off of art, of music, reading, and honestly most things I loved. That leads into the beginning of this November I started having seizures and was briefly hospitalized. I'm now signed up to see like 5 different specialists and its been a lot. I contacted my principle and am now actually dropping the classes I don't need to graduate and decided I need to do things for me. I've started doing musicals live here on youtube with a group I'm in and I noticed these 18x24 inch canvases I have propped up on against my wall. I've been doing art since before I could even read and I started doing portraits around six years ago. I've always loved people and realism. I got a lot more enjoyment focusing on anatomy vs color (which has lead to a struggle there rip). When it came to paint I mostly did watercolor but somehow all but four of my tubes went missing so I'm taking this as a hint to get back into acrylics. Hozier is my favorite artists, every single part of his music speaks to me in a way I couldn't possibly explain so I'm taking this time to paint one of things I love most. I'm really hoping I get better with color and color theory, and I'm really hoping to keep the patience and finish this massive piece.
I love hearing your art story, Robin. Your videos talking about what you considered your "real" art still help me today when I'm valuing the more silly side of my own art. I am so happy that you included the pennies! I had been watching your channel a bit before then, but that was the time where I started tuning into every video. One of my favorite things about this channel is how you incorporate psychology-related subjects in your journey, including mindfulness.

Your videos are so helpful. I started seriously doing art (mostly painting) about two years ago, and I went back to school to get my second BA in art history with minors in new media and art. I've also recently started a contract job to do design and illustrations for a magazine. Art is becoming a big part of my life, and I get a lot of insight from your videos and experiences.

I have been following your channel for years and have really enjoyed watching your work evolve.
2018 is by far my most favorite year from you. I will always prioritize your healthier mindset of now, but 2018 was incredible art wise.
I always love how mindful and thought provoking your videos are. And they always seem to come (or I end up watching them) when I’m in a more motivated mood to refocus on my art. I recently put in my resignation letter for a job that was taking up too much of my emotional energy and so far it’s completely been the right decision. Just knowing its going to end and that I’m gonna be entering a different chapter of my life is both relieving and reinvigorating. I don’t have a degree or the level of artistic training I would get from it but I’ve been growing as an artist for about 6 years now myself. I didn’t “really” start until my junior year of high school and it’s funny to me that I can see similarities in my last six years to yours, even with the far less experience. 2017-2018 was when I created the most, it was also when I was taking better care of my physical health and when I was in art classes forcing me to draw all the time. I miss and feel like I’m constantly striving for that level of productivity and I constantly have ideas but never find the motivation to execute them. Hopefully I can find it in this new chapter ahead of me, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for you as well ❤️

It's been an interesting six years. I didn't study art, but I keep being drawn back to it. I seem to lack your work ethic, which is a symptom of having no real belief in my ability, and I'm dogged by depression (which might be my lack of commitment). I regret not going for my PhD, but I'm not sure the benefits would be the same for fine art. I miss writing papers, of all things. I started watching because you embodied an intensely bright creativity with a natural empathy and grace. (And hella pretty.) I like seeing your evolution as it gives a great model of what an artist's life is like, which makes it all seem a little more real, if that makes any sense.

I always wanted to be an artist but I'm struggling with it so I admire you going forward with your degree and post art. I noticed as you were talking that the time around your dad's passing, you painted water. Water in dreams is symbolic of emotions. Then when you separated from hubby, you painted landscapes perhaps symbolic of freedom. I found this very interesting of your work.

I think your landscape and ocean paintings are where you shine. Just a suggestion but I think you should consider larger canvases with 1 1/2 inch profiles because that is what people want to hang on their walls. Along those lines if you want to sell art to the public then considering what people will want to display over their sofa or bed will help you create art that will sell and sell for more money. Just my two cents.

I'm still trying to figure out what art means to me and why I wanted to make it. I keep hoping that when I get back to it, I'll somehow improve, despite not practicing, that maybe i needed the break to relax and clean the mental gears, so to speak. I really wanted to be an artist, and it just came to feel hopeless for me. But I think I'm starting to get my grip back, and maybe through the process, just making things, maybe I can figure out why I want to make art.

I commend your efforts to catalogue your art journey and believe that you have created a wonderful path so far. I feel that I could go on and on, I will offer just this: I was trained in traditional art methods. I had to change directions many times to keep the “rent” paid. I even had to take a break from creating Art pieces to focus on learning and teaching digital techniques and at one point diverging into computer repair/maintenance! YOU CAN keep going in the direction that brings you joy! I believe that there are so many way to be successful in an Art career. I believe you have a successful one already! You can continue the direction you are going and take time for any side roads that you want to go down! I just want you to believe in yourself and never give up on your art journey. Yes, it can be hard but if you have joy in your life and works, is there really another path that you want? I also spent time teaching in school and I did not have time for my own art, one of the reasons I had to leave teaching in the school setting! The other big reason? Paperwork! I was drowning in pink slips and green slips ghaaaaah! Well I have gone on to long, I appreciate your art and your attitude, I believe that you are truly inspirational and I believe in you! I bet your thinking, man this guy can’t make a short comment, ever! Well you take care, be safe and have a lovely day!

I was interested in learning how to draw and paint landscapes. I was wondering if it's ok to "copy" a landscape picture by just looking at it and doing exactly what you see.
rather impressive to see all your works together! i'm not really qualified, but: your conclusions are very correct for you (prefer landscape, go larger but detailed, try mixedmedia, etc.). i like e.g. Kevin Peterson or Tim Okamura or Kehinde Wiley or Cesar Santos (sure there's more of them). i think they create things which some people identify with strongly, the art uplifts the viewers and buyers on their soul. it's a good intention to seriously uplift people. or to create beauty for the world when it might seem not as beautiful. it's up to us - the Defenders of Beauty! :-) so, to identify self with a landscape is rather tricky. OR the subject is strikingly beautiful and special (think perfect Tahiti wave playing with 1000 hues of blue), OR the viewer personally loves the place, OR some other way it would convey a message or a story (a winding road, special detail, e.g.). this will be key for you. you could try to combine landscape with some persons in it. like - a portrait with her hair in the wind and bang - a horizon with mountains on her left. or little persons on a mountain ridge - bang with flamingos. (why am i telling my ideas, ha?) it's going to take some work but we all trust you! I quit art for almost 6 years and getting back into it was really hard. It was a struggle to get back to where I wanted to be with my skill, and I learned patience was my main skill I had to relearn. Was there anything you learned from getting back into art?
hmm thats so interesting. yeah, I think that makes sense. Maybe my lesson is how humbling it is to craft a skill and put in the work over time. Reality is different from what our imaginations project.
