Reason #1 -- that was me for *years!* I grew up with that "we-just-facuumed-the-house-smell"... like dust and hair that had been heated up to almost-but-not-quite-burning. It wasn't until I was on my own for a long time that I got frustrated and tried to figure out what was going on, which ended in me disassembling my vacuum to a level where I could reverse it, and cleaning off the biggest hair-wrap .... well, a really big hair-wrap.
    -
I think the reason that people buy cheap vacuums is because my Dyson Pet Pro 2 (the last upright model that runs off of a wall outlet) costs *four times more* than a $89.99 unit from Wal-Mart. But:
1 - it looks the same as far as basic shape goes
2 - it sounds the same -- a big loud "whrrrrrrrrr" when running
3 - the carpet has more-or-less the same 'freshly-vacuumed' marks on it
    -
If people are like me, then they don't/didn't even know that the 'burnt-dust-vacuum-smell' isn't a fact of vacuuming, _it's just indicative of inferior design._

Specifically because your vacuum will need to last long and protect your family&home from all the shit on your floors it makes sense to save up to get better vacuums. This was IMMENSELY helpful since I didn’t (previously) put too much respect into the HEPA filter. Putting all my priority into almost trivial features like swivel and cord rewind and attachments. A little clarification regarding the early vacuums. Some COULD clean hard floors. Straight suction vacuums most notably could because, as the term implies, there was no brushroll. others like the early pre-war kirbys could allow you to take the belt off (this of course was before built in belt lifters were a thing) or had mechanical, gear driven brush rolls (that is, they would turn as the wheels did). The latter was found on straight suction machines (see Kirby’s video on the scott fetzer sanitation system for an idea of how the mechanical roller worked)

My Numatic James only cost me £90 on offer at the time I bought it, and it's a great vacuum, has a HEPA bag and a huge filter too, the air always smells clean after using it. Numatic vacuums are one of the best selling here in the UK, I can see why too after having mine for just over 2 years now and it's never let me down in any way. We also have a MK2 Dyson DC40 animal too and that's alsona good vacuum but I don't think it's as good as the James is, the carpets always look cleaner when they've been done with the James than they do when they've been done with the Dyson.

    Do you review central vacuums?
The reasons you addressed in this video were they primary reasons why I spent the money and installed a central vacuum in my townhouse. I used to have a small, bag less, canister vacuum, with hepa filters, and yeah - it would smell somewhat cleaner, there would be that lingering dust smell. Further, anytime
I emptied the canister, it was release a lot of that dust. Cleaning the “washable filters” was a horrible messy messy job - an allergic persons nightmare.
So so happy with my central vac.

It cost me about 200 but its worth it OMG if your gonna spend over 100 dollars on a steamer get one thats versatile vs a simple floor steamer that you can only use one the floor. Its comes with like 23 attachments, holds enough water for 2hrs continuous steaming, has a long hose and cord like honestly I'm in love with this thing and its amazing on my Hardwood and tile floors check it people have reviews on it.. Plus during covid having a good steamer around to disinfect your home and even your N95s to stretch them out since real N95 mask are limited right now for most of us. About a week ago after a flea incident I went and got a 59 dollar Bissell and yea it was a vacuuming beast but as soon as I looked it up on UA-cam this video popped up. I’m so glad it did because as soon as I saw the unsealed system without a hepa filter I took the bissel back and ordered your recommended shark Apex duo clean. Unfortunately it was a refurbished model that broke in a week so I traded it for a cordless Tineco pure one S-11 tango. I just got this new Tineco S-11 a couple days ago and this thing is a really good and affordable cordless vacuum Plus it is perfect for my whole house of hardwood floors. I think it’s much faster without a cord for daily vacuuming, so the broken Apex was a blessing in disguise. Thank you for the video and the visuals it really made me see just how unacceptable it is to have dust blowing out like that, to me you might as well not vacuum.

The dirt devil power swerve stick vac is my favorite budget vac of all time. Costing only $68, it comes with both a squeegee and a brushroll on/off switch. The battery lasts 20 minutes and 2 seconds on full charge, far more than it says on the box. It has a partially sealed system around the dirt bin, although not having a HEPA filter. It’s also very light and cordless/convenient. It’s my favorite!

It ticks me off that Shark skimped on hepa filtration on the Ionflex f80, but have it on the P50 canister version in the same price range. I still love the f80, and the Mrs. wanted it over the P50 because it's not as heavy, and she goes over baby gates a lot in our home. Plus it came with 2 batteries. Though it doesn't bother us when vacuuming, it would have been nice peace of mind. No regrets on the purchase though, it's a great little machine, and handles hard floors like a boss. Keep up the great videos.

I have the bissell magic vac which is a super cheap vacuum - around $60+ but I bought it on sale for like $20-25 CAD. Its one saving grace is that it has a squeegee. It picks up all the visible particles no problem.

don't buy bagless either. the bag is a giant filter and when you are done the bag is self contained so small particles won't get back out, like from dumping a bagless bin

My Kirby is 20. Now used much since we got wood floors in so used it in my cleaning business. Stopped because it was sucking the commercial carpet tiles off..LOL I mainly use Oreck type now. Main reason is suction and many laminate, low pile surfaces. So far the best suckers are those that have a fan right after the roller. If it has to suck thru filters and housings, I won't use it except new const homes because of the loose carpet piles would fill a bag quickly and a canister I can dump and keep going. I love using the Kirby as a shop vac.

Hey after watching this video i made some home upgrades to my cheap vaccum. I got a bisell powerforce turbo compact, what a mouth full. I looked at the connections and each were sucking up dust through the conection gaps. I added some thread sealer tape on the plastic, put the hose on and zip tied it tight. Then i used 2 extra belts to hug the tank to the back.

Your Grandma would be ashamed! You were supposed to get a wash rag & dish cloth. After you sweep and use the dust pan, you get the wash rag and wipe the floor, rinsing and cleaning as needed. Then you dry any moisture left from wiping/ scrubbing the floor with the wash rag using the wash cloth.

Try sweeping some loose dry dirt outside with a broom.
Even a small amount of sweeping with a broom on a relatively clean floor causes an air purifier's air quality indicator to turn RED for a long time with the kitchen fan running all along. Sweeping with a broom is horrible.

Kudos to you guys for once again putting a spotlight on the harmful and air-polluting effects of portable vacuums.
Even expensive, sealed vacuums of the type you described will eventually begin leaking contaminated air since they are are not stationary devices like air purifiers. The daily operation of moving a vacuum through a room, banging into walls and furniture, up and down stairs will, over time, cause the integrity of the sealed HEPA filter housing to be compromised.
As an asthmatic and severe allergy sufferer myself, I have found the only solution to be a central/integrated vacuum with the collection tank and associated dust removed from the living space altogether. Since the machine generating the suction is remotely located, affixed to a wall, and immobile, it is not susceptible to the air leakage found in a portable or robotic vacuum. The integrity of the sealed container is maintained and in fact, the residual dirty air is often exhausted outside entirely. Central vacs are inherently healthier and better for indoor air quality. Period.

People always ask why I’m getting a new vacuum every couple of years thinking I’m being wasteful.
I have problems with breathing and allergies. I get rashes from the littlest things and sinus infections all through the cold seasons. I NEED good vacuums and air filters and people without these problems just don’t get it.

As someone from EU region im so confused. I never saw a vacuum that is unable to be used on hard floor. I assume it is related to lack of vertical vacuums in eu, and horizontal ones use different kind of motor as i learned from another video of yours

I have Hoover Windtunnel, probably the first edition, with the suction power of an uninterested girlfriend. I've disassembled it entirely and cleaned it out and it's still crap. Most of my house is hard surface with area rugs so your little tidbit about sealing the suction opening and brush control is super handy.
