The next day at school were would talk about any new videos that debuted the night before. We just took for granted it would always be that way.
I think the internet is making everyone the same. In the old days things happened in little pockets. there were different 'scenes' in every big town across the UK and sometimes even in different parts of London. people aren't so cut off like they used to be which allowed trends, accents and slang to develop more autonomously

The album this is off of "So" really helped me get through my teen years. "Don't Give Up" is still a really inspiring song for me as an adult. The whole album is a 10/10.
The great thing about these videos from the 80's is that the music video was still in its infancy as an art form and it was literally "anything goes" and creativity was through the roof. So many memorable videos from that era! As a teenager at the time I was fascinated with videos and how well they worked with the song. Some, like this one, fit the music so perfectly that 30-some years down the road you can't hear the song without the video playing in your head. This is truly a timeless classic.
I can't recall the guy's name who did the vids but he played off Peter's Musical Theater bent... I suppose Peter had to make some $$ and wrote killer pop cheese . But even those songs had weird time stamps and theatrical arrangements
"People have lost the passion they just look at what everyone else is doing" That's down to the record companies its all about the money. If there's a formula that works then they'll stick with it until it doesn't. Creativity doesn't enter into it. Its squeeze the artists till the money stops flowing dump them and move on. This is why so few artists nowadays survive the years
In 1986!! I remember it so well because when I went into labor with my daughter, and I was put in a hospital room, my husband asked me what I wanted on the TV. "MTV!!!" was my answer to get my mind somplace else. And my daughter was born, as I watched "Sledgehammer". The 70's and 80's were life!
I tlked to Peter about this video one day, he told me that his part took a whole week to do and he hat to get a seperate phone line installed in his office just answer calls aon who made the video! He is a really nice guy, the compasny I worked for designed his studio at Ford, near Bath in Somerset. The girls in the office would ask him for autographs and he would spend time chatting to anybody and everybody in the place. He would just hang around talking until he was due to go and consult with the architects about the design. They made a model of the new studio out of stiff card and you could lift of the roof and look inside to the details. He was in his VW Golf GTI waiting to turn onto the main road the day I talked to him about this video, he didn't bother moving until we had concluded the converstaion and then he said goodbye and we went our seperate ways. Nice guy. I knew the Ardmans studio in Bristol and watched them doing the Wallace and Gromit movie, an intensive, time consuming art. They did this video.
@@dozer30 yes it was, I went to their studio in Bristol and I was shown around by a woman Nick Park had asked to give me a tour, I only went to pick up a PA for a gig I was doing in some field in Somerset. I saw all the plasticine models and how they created these videos, amazing place and cool people. That was before Wallace and Gromit.
Are you kidding Peter Gabriel let loose on MTV, I'm sure they had to keep him restrained. This is such a direct extension of all his stage acts from His past live performances.
I have to disagree. The albums So, Us , and UP are pretty darn good and go well past normal pop radio themes and sounds. The "Secret World" tour was very , very, good.
OH JAMAL !!!!!! TOU SIMPLY MUST DO A REACTION TO "IN YOUR EYES "....The one that hes on a circular stage with many musicians from all over....IT IS FABULOUS, DEEP, MYSTICAL AND ABOUT LOVE!!!!!!
Man, I love how much you dig this. Great fact about “Sledgehammer”: The song was a last-minute idea for the record (So). He had completely finished the record and sent the band home, but then came up with the idea. He called the band back and SURPRISE, it became one of his biggest hits!
I had a friend record her So CD for me onto a tape. She put the extra song on for me too- Excellent Birds which I was hugely into since I love Laurie. It was a great surprise gift. Jamel, you should listen to the whole album start to finish. Amazing.
This video won a lot of awards and really lifted "the game" .. I remember going to work and this was on my tape walkman on the train ... used to get me so pumped .. thank you for reminding me .. nostalgia and good music .. heaven .. luv ya xx
"Runnin' Down a Dream" by the late great Tom Petty is another good song with a similarly quirky video, in its own way, for it. He also does an Alice in Wonderland inspired video for his song "Don't Come Around Here No More."
Brother... I feel your passion, love, and true appreciation for this timeless music. I feel fortunate that I grew up on this, but I still feel like I’m rediscovering it every time I listen to it. Thank you!
"I'm guessing this is the 80s, right?" Aye... this was stop-motion- not CGI. Every frame was taken as a photo and then it was all put together to make the video.
I remember seeing that in a “Making of Wallace and Gromit” mini documentary on the DVD I used to have; I never appreciated it at the time, but Gabriel (and Genesis) have always had some kind of musical influence in my life, even since I was little!
@@mikeschroeder8594 Granted, they're no Scatterbrain, but they had their moment. I only said that because they were forced to change the name of the band after the lawsuit, which I found to be stupid.
Great song, one of the most iconic songs not just of the 80’s but in pop music history. I would like to add that when people say they don’t make music like this anymore, you have to remember we’re listening to the best of the best. There was plenty of crap made back in the day as well (and that applies to whenever “back in the day” is for you). And so in another couple of decades we’ll be listening to the top, massive, hits of today and saying the same thing (“Uptown Funk”, anyone?). There’ll always be great music. Thanks, Jamal, for bringing the older stuff back for those of us who remember when it was new and for those of you for whom it’s new now.
Peter Gabriel is incredible in all his work over the years, lyrically and musically. His performances are powerful, often sharing the stage with singers and musicians from around the world (see his Secret World Live tour, particularly In Your Eyes performance). Peter was a big fan of Nick Park and Aardman Animations, a British animation studio that did, among MANY other things, the Wallace and Grommet series, and he joined with them to create this amazing video. Look up how they created this video; it's even more mind-boggling than you think. And it won a ton of awards.
Check out his other hits: Red Rain, In your Eyes, Shock the Monkey. His deeper cuts: Biko, and Wallflower. And when you're ready, 1970's Genesis when he was the lead singer. Genesis with Gabriel was simply some of the most intricate and iconic progressive rock bands of their era! Thanks for the reaction!
‘Solsbury Hill’ was his first solo hit, and is loosely about his frame of mind leading up to leaving Genesis. Watch the video of it on his channel that is cut together from films of him playing it in concert over a span of 40 years... it’s 4 minutes of sheer joy. And the bass player (Tony Levin, a musical genius in his own right) doesn’t appear to age a day. Another great one, though PG didn’t write it, is “The Book of Love.” Deeply profound lyrics.
I love that my man here digs all types of music. This makes me really happy to see his joyful reaction to this, cause this is probably my fave video of the 80s for sheer creativity and WTF'ness
I remember when this came out in 1986, i had just left secondary school age 16 and this was the biggest thing to hit the UK charts for a LONG time, everybody i knew was talking about it. It's one of those songs that can instantly take you back to a different time in your life because of the impact it had on you the very first time you ever heard it.
I went to the Atlanta secret world show. It wasn't an original tour date. The show was added to the tour after an overwhelming letter writing campaign demanding an atlanta show. That arena was electric that night. Top 5 live music experiences for me.
@@johnbindert7046 "Steam" is great... My dad had the Secret World albums that we would listen to on long car trips and my favorites were always "In Your Eyes" and "Shaking the Tree", but every song on there is a masterpiece... Tom Petty “don’t come around here no more” Another very creative/ visual video Tipper Gore (Al Gore’s wife) tried to have it banned and it was one of the songs/videos that started the “parents beware” labels
This song is such a JAM. I was a little kid at the time it came out and I loved the hell outta it. Good times, when MTV was actually a music video channel!
@Vincent Schmitt "Once in a Life Time" is their most famous and innovative video, though there's also "Psycho Killer," which is a forty year old song that inexplicably got a brand new video a couple years ago.
Vincent Schmitt their most pop albums are Little Creatures and True Stories, the earlier albuns are more experimental. The last one, Naked, is practically a world music album. Regarding videos, I recommend “Nothing but flowers”, “Once in a lifetime”, “And she was”, “Love for sale”, everything from the live album “Stop making sense”, mainly “Psycho Killer”. And, last but not least, “Wild wild life”, that contains scenes from David Byrne’s movie: “True Stories”.
I wonder if they allow people to react to their official videos? To watch live versions would still be good, just wouldn't be the same as getting the quirky visuals that went into the videos
What I absolutely love about this video is it's authenticity. Back then there was no CGI so everything on screen was hand-made and after my 20th+ watch I'm still speechless and amazed by this work of art. 👌🔥
Another staple video is "Once in a lifetime" from Talking Heads Jamel. I was there when MTV began. Watched for hours. It is one of the best...like Sledgehammer!
I remember those days, too. MTV was on all day in my house, with a little smattering of the other new channel, The Weather Channel. Ha. Then I got orders overseas and didn't come back until 1993. What a shock that was :)
Imagine what is was like for us in the 80s seeing this for the first time. Talking about excitement and mind blowing. Peter Nd also The Cars were pioneers of video making like this. I knew this would flip you out just it did us. Great reaction, it didn't disappoint. Check out Shock The Monkey next. This is a great song as well. Killer beat to it. Thanks.
The thing about this song is it's just gospel music put through a 80's pop filter, and you can tell Peter Gabriel FELT it. That's why it's so damn powerful. Has one of the best outros of any song ever.

This song is beast! It never gets old to me, I was born in ‘89 and have loved this song and video since I was a kid. To me it’s one of those tracks that always picks me up when I’m feeling down.
He is talking about the lack of it. He says “if” you bring your blue skys back....I kicked the habit.....if you show for me I will chauffeur you. She don’t like him no more, and it don’t seem like she wants him back despite his little song. He musta done sumthin baaaaaaaaaaaddd.....
When we watched this in the 80's, we were sitting their with our mouth open. We can't believe one can make such wonderful things in a music video. It made it to MOMA even and was long on the lists of best MVs ever. (Think it still is) Nowadays we have teenagers who are doing such things at home. I like how you still have respect for what Peter Gabriel did. And his song is even good without the video. Please also check out Genesis' "Jesus he knows me"- this is fun too.

only number 2? what could possibly rank higher
Take on Me by Aha is my guess.
If I had to guess, The Buggles "Video Killed the Radio Star"
@@Bossay6 Maybe Thriller?
Thriller was number one.
Must do "Shock the Monkey" by the same artist. Trust me, I'm a doctor.
"Solsbury Hill" is the Peter Gabriel song you want to hear.
Finally someone didn't misspell it 😚
Nick an$ Biko
And count while you are hearing it! It is my favourite song in 7/4 meter!
Get your things I've come to take you home
In your eyes I am y o u r
"digging in the Dirt", "Shock the Monkey", "Steam", "Solsbury Hill".....there are a few more classics
Steam is such a banger!
I can't recall the guy's name who did the vids but he played off Peter's Musical Theater bent... I suppose Peter had to make some $$ and wrote killer pop cheese . But even those songs had weird time stamps and theatrical arrangements
Big time is a great video, you should check that one out and steam.
Diggin' in the dirt...to find the places I've been hurt
Greg Webb are you from Collinsville?
I remember when this song was new in 1986. Talk about a smash hit and an instant classic! It's still one of my favorites after all of these years.
I bought this album in high school, when it came out and remember thinking the mix was superb. Tony Levin's bass work really brings the song to life.
This video was so groundbreaking for its time! Everyone was talking about it.
Great story! Thanks for sharing
Thanks. That was great. I remember when this came out. Everyone was talking about it. The video was so groundbreaking.
whispjohn wasn’t this video made by Aardman Animations? I love their stuff.
This was Peter Gabriel's come back after going into recovery. He did awesome!
Peter gabriel was absolutely one of the greats and he reached his pinnacle with this album. A true artist.
I have to disagree. The albums So, Us , and UP are pretty darn good and go well past normal pop radio themes and sounds. The "Secret World" tour was very , very, good.
genesis selling england by the pound was his opus
Is!!
@Carlos Saraiva And he still did some great stuff after that, such as the opening theme to "Gangs of New York."
"In Your Eyes"....Peter Gabriel. Wonderful song.
OH JAMAL !!!!!! TOU SIMPLY MUST DO A REACTION TO "IN YOUR EYES "....The one that hes on a circular stage with many musicians from all over....IT IS FABULOUS, DEEP, MYSTICAL AND ABOUT LOVE!!!!!!
Digging in the Dirt & Solsbury Hill.
The Lamb Lies down on Broadway....the. whole. album.
Shaking the Trees!
I Art Laughing The live version is Salisbury Hill is electric!!!!
Peter Gabriel, “In Your Eyes” a must listen!
Absolutely - ua-cam.com/video/JJmrWE1J5Hw/v-deo.html
The ending gives me chills to this day - on the live version.
@@willcooper7345 Paula Cole is awesome on "Secret World Live". When she sings on "Don't Give Up", it always gives me chills.
Hold's her boom box up
Gabriel Ramos the perfect love song, Peter Gabriel is pure genius
This is one of the greatest things ever created. Sound... visuals... timeless perfection. Loved watching you discover this!
This was once rated as the greatest music video of all time.
It was wasn't it? I vaguely remember that on a VH1 show ir something
It remains so
Man, I love how much you dig this.
Amazing.
It’s unbelievable the amount of work went into putting all those still shots together for a video
This video won a lot of awards and really lifted "the game" .. I remember going to work and this was on my tape walkman on the train ... used to get me so pumped .. thank you for reminding me .. nostalgia and good music .. heaven .. luv ya xx
Suggest “Games Without Frontiers”....”Shock the Monkey” and “Digging in the Dirt” Then it’ll be time to dive into Genesis and Phil Collins next.
Digging in the Dirt for sure its a really good one...
Peter Gabriel was to Genesis what Roger Waters was to Pink Floyd.
Yeeesssss. I was thinking this since I saw him do Pink Floyd
I'll second" Shock the Monkey".......
Digging in the dirt
Bro I remember seeing this on MTV back in the day when they actually played music and videos !!!
Yes
"Runnin' Down a Dream" by the late great Tom Petty is another good song with a similarly quirky video, in its own way, for it. He also does an Alice in Wonderland inspired video for his song "Don't Come Around Here No More."
That 'Alice in Wonderland' video was amazing. I remember when it was on MTV and would just sit and stare when it came on.
Brother... I feel your passion, love, and true appreciation for this timeless music. I feel fortunate that I grew up on this, but I still feel like I’m rediscovering it every time I listen to it. Thank you!
"I'm guessing this is the 80s, right?"
Aye... this was stop-motion- not CGI.
Every frame was taken as a photo and then it was all put together to make the video.
The guy who created Wallace and grommit was involved in this video.
Wensleydale, Grommit?
@Christopher Adams he did.
Really!? I didn’t know that! That is so cool! I remember seeing this on MTV and being blown away!
Oh my god, that makes so much sense!
I remember seeing that in a “Making of Wallace and Gromit” mini documentary on the DVD I used to have; I never appreciated it at the time, but Gabriel (and Genesis) have always had some kind of musical influence in my life, even since I was little!
"Three Little Pigs" by Green Jelly
It's an out there video.
David Clark yes!
Hell yeah! Green Jello sucks! Electric Harley House of Love!
They'll always be Green Jello to me!!!
@@brettmarlar4154 Green Jello sucks! Hey! Wolf face! I'm your worst nightmare.
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is the best concert I ever saw. And I have seen some great ones!!!
Biko!
@John Liller Solsbury Hill, my favourite of all time, lifts my spirits as soon as I hear the opening
Took it back with Biko
You should check out Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" live from the Secret World tour... There are some amazing musicians featured in the concert.
The ending gives me chills and is AMAZING
Mt favorite from "Secret World Live" is "Steam" with the introduction. I have SWL in VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray.
I went to the Atlanta secret world show. It wasn't an original tour date. The show was added to the tour after an overwhelming letter writing campaign demanding an atlanta show. That arena was electric that night. Top 5 live music experiences for me.
Ben Boyer I’ve just posted the very same thing!! I absolutely love it!! Goosebumps every time ❤️
@@johnbindert7046 "Steam" is great... My dad had the Secret World albums that we would listen to on long car trips and my favorites were always "In Your Eyes" and "Shaking the Tree", but every song on there is a masterpiece... Mostly we shared a love for "Solsbury Hill" and "Come Talk To Me" with those beautiful bagpipes!
Tom Petty “don’t come around here no more”
Another very creative/ visual video
Tipper Gore (Al Gore’s wife) tried to have it banned and it was one of the songs/videos that started the “parents beware” labels
"Big time" is another peter Gabriel classic from the eighties
Seconding the recommendation for Big Time
Love that vid!
This song is such a JAM. I was a little kid at the time it came out and I loved the hell outta it. Good times, when MTV was actually a music video channel!
"In Your Eyes", "Big Time", "Red Rain", "Shock The Monkey", "Digging In The Dirt", "Steam"...please do these!
*YOUR PROFILE PICTURE MAKES ME WANT TO SMACK THE DEMON OUT OF YOU.*
*~ HOLY SEE*
"Growing up" , "Darkness" or my all time favorite "Signal to Noise"
Yes please do "Big Time".
Yeah a big yes to all of those, fantastic songs.
Don't forget Biko, Come Talk To Me and Games Without Frontiers.
This song is fantastic.
Check out Talking Heads, David Byrne is a genius
@Vincent Schmitt "Once in a Life Time" is their most famous and innovative video, though there's also "Psycho Killer," which is a forty year old song that inexplicably got a brand new video a couple years ago.
@Vincent Schmitt And She Was is a good place to start.
The live "Life During Wartime" from Stop Making Sense
lol I had not seen seen this in a long time. This is the greatest acid trip ever, set to music. Genius video.
The things he put himself through to create what he did was crazy. He was shocked repeatedly filming the end part. The man is crazy talented!!!
"Black Magic Woman" by Santana is another must just for the music alone and his guitar talents.
The original Fleetwood Mac version was pretty good as well.
@@BHK1978 I agree. Love Fleetwood Mac.
YASSSS!
Robert Palmer--Simply Irrestible or Addicted to Love. If you love Peter Gabriel you’re going to love Robert Palmer songs.
These are fire
Simple Irresistible, i second that.
A beautiful song by Peter Gabriel is In Your Eyes. I know you'll love it.
What I absolutely love about this video is it's authenticity. Back then there was no CGI so everything on screen was hand-made and after my 20th+ watch I'm still speechless and amazed by this work of art. 👌🔥
Iconic videos? "Addicted to Love" by Robert Palmer, followed up by "Simply Irresistable."
David Mercury Great songs. Simply Irresistible is amazing!
And after he does addicted to love he needs to do addicted to spuds!!
Another staple video is "Once in a lifetime" from Talking Heads Jamel. I was there when MTV began. Watched for hours. It is one of the best...like Sledgehammer!
@Salem no I don't. Who did it?
Thanks.
low rider no shit. So much groundbreaking stuff in the 80s
The video for You Might Think!
@@iwantmyutube9040 yes thats the one that came to my mind. And Genisis, Land of Confusion.
The thing about this song is it's just gospel music put through a 80's pop filter, and you can tell Peter Gabriel FELT it. That's why it's so damn powerful. Has one of the best outros of any song ever.
Peter is one of the greatest living musical artists today. He is a lyrical and musical genius both with Genesis and in his long solo career. Please do more.
Try Biko, Love to be Loved. Washing of the Water, In Your Eyes, Darkness. The list is lonnnnnng!!!
Love that you did Peter!
Shout out to Tony Levin. His bass part on this song is legendary.
All of his bass, cello and Stick parts are legendary.
The bald man Jams.
The bass has a very walking groove under the melody
Tony Levin is great. This is a monster funk groove!
👌🏻
Saw him with yes
Has he done Dire Straits “Money for Nothing”? Seems like he would love it. Especially since sting is in it and he’s been watching Police videos.
I want my MTV!
The live version though!
2nd fav concert of all time was gabriel n sting a few years ago. Both guys, with both of their bands all on the stage together, taking turns singing their own songs, each other's songs and a bunch of duets.
Excellent suggestion. I remember when that music video was played on MTV dozens of time a day as a kid. Throw in the guitars and it will be as fun to watch the reaction as it was this one.
First thing I thought after this too.
Yeah it’s true , when this first cane out I listen to this at work 400 trillion times a day when this first came out. Timeless
Robert Palmer "Simply Irresistible " he was the gentleman of Rock and roll. Do it do it do it :))))
Isn’t it just great when you hear a song for the first time and you just “get it” - good reaction
Peter Gabriel was years ahead of everyone to inovate music with production techniques and also in highlighting and exposing social injustice. Please check out these Peter Gabriel classics
Biko
Solsbury Hill
Shock the Monkey
Intruder
San Jacinto
Humdrum
This song is beast! It never gets old to me, I was born in ‘89 and have loved this song and video since I was a kid. To me it’s one of those tracks that always picks me up when I’m feeling down.
Same and same. This was one of my favorite videos as a kid
I'm surprised you never talked about what Gabriel was actually talking about in the song. All the symbolism. S-E-X
Yeah it was definitely an ode to his own well...Peter I guess! lol
That’s ‘cuz it’s pretty standard come-on stuff. Just there to give the sounds and style something to hang on.
In your eyes - secret world live tour. The pure joy of the musicians is something to behold in these crazy times.
"Lost the passion in the craft." That is a sentiment that speaks to my soul and disappointment with modern music. I am now a subscriber.
That music makes us feel so good gets us in good moods
Peter Gabriel "in your eyes " live secret world, amazing show give it a shot.
Gotta do Easy Lover by Phil Collins if you haven’t already!!!
yeesss 😉👍
The Brother must have played GTA man. He knows for sure !
Richard Granger great choice! ✊🏼
Oh ya! Its phil bailey though mostly!
Plus Land Of Confusion an absolute great nod to the 80s.
SO happy you did this! Peter Gabriel is amazing! Please do “That voice again” and “In your eyes” off of his album “So”
