3:43 this is actually a genius level design move because it puts the pedal crank in a secondary position- only using a few teeth on the crank as a guide to the main workhorse sprocket on the motor. This reduces overall friction and should have equal grip on the chain. The tradeoff will be more stress on the crank sprocket.

this is truly something that is clearly meant to be custom added to .. you need to make the double chain ring . only reason i like it is its small . im building an e bike with a longer chain rail with a spot for the motor behind the crank . with a custom freewheel crankset
4th year, 48 volt original, I run double-chain, single-speed , Sturmey drum-brake freehub with single cog. It's very sweet. No hose-clamps. It was a lot of work.
Holy cow. I don't care how advanced one is, securing a 3kw motor with hose clamps sounds flimsy. How can that possibly be a rugged solution? We're going to need a long-term test before trusting that kind of rig. On the other hand, a 3kw motor sounds terrific. So good job in exploring this thing, Johnny.
the pipe straps are just to make sure the motor doesnt rock from hitting bumps and torque. majority of the holding is done by the clamping of the Bottom bracket. i have the 3kw on my fatbike and its super solid (hasnt moved in nearly a year)
thou the version i have is different? mines clamped on both sides of the Bottom bracket, and the pipe strap goes around motor with a second around the frame.

While I can't see from the vid, there should be one plate on the sprocket side, but I don't see any 2nd plate on the non-drive side - only the strap to hold the motor on the left non-drive side???
Con: Motor shifts further to the left to line up with chain. In the double chain design, if the motor can be secured to the downtube with two U bolts, it can slide up and down so no chain tensioner is needed for first chain.
It looks like most of the torque would be on the motors chainring. It would be nice to have a bracket that bolts or clamps from the motor to the frame.
Hmm first video seeing the Cyclone. I'll have to research a bit. I'm on the fence about where to go next. Have an fs 48v 21ah 750w geared hub drive. 1300 miles. Just roasted the controller. The motor should go soon (about to toss a 1500w controllet on it.. bms is good for 2kw). About the 650 mile mark I modded the shunt. Can't believe it lasted this long. Thinking about going mid drive kit. I like that the CYC is torque sensing. The bafang for its large network of people, parts and compatibility. Also considering just buying a Watt Wagons Hydra although my wallet is not happy about the thought. Shoudnt be any issue with chain only engaging with the top side of the chain ring. Even if the chain was touching the chainring like an ordinary bike, the torque would only be shared by the first few teeth on the cog.
I got mine month ago.. making video on how I installed..dealing with torque. Needed a custom braket.. kept bending stock one.. but I have a stretch cruiser.. but got bugs worked out.. and I like!!
Thanks for the update. I don’t like that it sticks out on the left so much. On either side it would bother me, so is it possible to place it on the down tube? I still like your suggestion of creating a box for the motor as those custom made bikes for the mid drives are awesome looking along with being practical in keeping it safe from the elements, dust, rain, etc
Yes that crank offset on the left side is absolutely ridiculous! Even the standard 2 chain kit has supermega wide cranks (q factor). I modified my motor to reduce width 14mm to get a more reasonable riding position
Hi JNO, two questions: a) This new single chainring version comes with a screen, but apparently the old double chainring does not come with a screen. My question is: does this mean that only the new single chainring version has PAS (while the old screenless double-chainring version does not viably support PAS (because no screen & screen control button panel)? (I.e. does this mean the old double chainring version still does not have PAS? b) Looking at the images, it appears that the single chainring version pushes both the motor and the left side crankarm to the left by at least an inch or so. My questions: does this splay out the left leg making it feel awkward to pedal? Also does the motor's new position from center of the bike shifted to left make the bike's center of weight "left-heavy" (i.e. too much weight on left side of bike, making it want to fall over to the left side?
I wonder if the motor could be rotated to a lower position in order to grab another tooth or two. No doubt that would make custom mounting brackets necessary.
Now that makes sense... the other system did look a little odd with the way they were engineered! Im sure this will be an improvement! i wish cyc were more affordable and quieter...i would surely consider them...but im going with the BBSHD for this first build.

I worked in a chemical plant maintenance shop lots of hose clamp experience. You definitely want to fabricate a better clamp. You can strip the rack out of a hose clamp with a screw driver and wrist strength.
Whats better these things or bbshd with phaserunner ? also have you ever or would you ever try to put one of these high power mid drives on a lightweight hardtail frame ? or is it too weak ?
Just for looking at it, I'd prefer the double-chain-ring version. I've heard that LA E-bikes has a custom bracket. Someone else makes a beefier freewheel for the sprocket side of the drive.
@@buffalomind6838 The motor help me enough to pedal easily up all hills where I live. I can not tell the speed right now. But I will control next time it is weather to use the bike. Just now I have spikes on my tires, it slow down the speed. To day I pedal up a steep hill at 16-20 Kmt. on a cold winter day.
@@buffalomind6838 climbing the steepest streets in my area the BBS02 + pedaling can slow down to 7mph. With extreme grades it feels like if I wasn’t helping the motor would be struggling. Whereas BBSHD climbs all day np
You should really consider partnering up with high voltage here on UA-cam. They sell hot rod kits for the bbshd. Using the BAC 855 controller. Since they don't do installs themselves you would be the perfect person to represent them. I have talked to them many times and they are really a great group of guys based in Canada.
I have an 83 mm dh frame. Looking to use an Isis system. Was wondering if the bottom bracket needs to be longer on ones side as I've just found. Out there might be two different cyclone 83 mm bb types one that isn't offset. and both are 148 I believe .Also I just purchased the spank hex steel driver hub so that' should be good to go for the wheel .
For support on the cyclone you can check out a UA-cam page called high voltage. High voltage also has a discord page where you can learn as well as teach what you have learned yourself about the cyclone. Great videos Johnny, keep them coming.
is it faster that the dual system? iv got the 3000w and 7500w, this looks like it would be alot better for the 7500w. i think the 3000w chainwheels are 52-48 the 7500w is 52-22. im more looking better ways to clamp it down to stop the flex, did it help with that?

That thing will destroy front sprocket in first rides, but than.. hey... it is actually do not create a lot of load on it - it is freewheel. All it is doing if you not pedal - only keeping chain. Thanks for the cyclone update. It looks like this is moving the motor to the left. How does it feel pedaling the bike with the crank arm so far off? If needed do you think you can fit a tensioner between the motor and the crank?
I can feel the uncomfortableness if barely even rideable pedal wise. After all it is a bicycle, and one wants to pedal to get exercise, and get the best battery life from this 3,000w mid drive in particular. You’d seemingly go through 20amps in a half hour if your lucky assuming it’s a 48-52 volt battery.
@Joe U - that was initially one of my questions too. But if the chain tensioner is on the bottom in this case, it would pull on the rear derailleur cage, so it would be pointless. I'm just wondering about how to keep the chain from falling off the front sprockets in bumpy ride.
Newbie here (actually not even that; just an interested person, who thinks about maybe eventually, upgrading my trekking bike): If this is nothing for a first install, what would you recommend to go with? (As full power as possible... for comparison reasons) Would ti still be a cyc? Or rather a Bafang? (Maybe you made a video on that, but I didn't find one so far...)
Just made my first e bike with. Had to make custom braket and weld to frame.. kept twisting stock braket.. and those hose clamps but scary. But I put motor inside frame. Stretch bike. Making video asp finely got bugs worked out. I think..lol
I think there are three bolts that hold the case together and open up to the planetary gears. Use a high quality automotive gear lube and don’t go crazy on putting too much in. Remove all the old stuff first.
How fast can it go with a 52 vold battery? I have the bafang and I get between 30-38mph. But would like something like 40-50mph. I live in Florida so no mountains or cold 🥶 weather

Does you Cyclone mini shut off when overheat? if not what did you do so it does not shut off when heating up? also which controller are you using? Anwers well appreciated.
@@paulawestcott7228 My Cyclone Mini shut down on my first ride (before I knew what I was doing). Too hot to touch! I was in my highest gear, going uphill! LOL! What voltage you running? Mini is designed for 24 - 48 volt. Over that it runs hot. I was running 52V, with stock Kelly controller (old version, not programmable). My solution? Always shift to appropriate gear, and use full power sparingly.
THE MOTOR IS HOLDING BY THE SAME # OF TEETH, IT'S JUST THE # OF TEETH THAT YOUR PEDAL IS USING THAT HAS YOU QUESTIONING IT, RIGHT. I HAVE ONE OF THE OLDER KITS, AND I USE MILLWAUKEE BATTS. TO POWER IT. 4 YEARS NOW.

Thanks for keeping us all more educated & up to date. Since 1st researching motors the Cyclone has been of interest but I recognized my limitations and started with the BBSHD. I wanted PAS, never liked a dual chain setup and installation was beyond my skills with the previous Cyclone. After having done a couple of BBSxx installs I think I could install this new Cyclone. Does the new version offer PAS? Is this beast tameable with the right controller & some fiddling? I've read (in the past) its power can be overwhelming. Is it my imagination or is the left crank farther from the frame than the right?
With the display, it has 5 levels of power so on 1 it’s definitely very tame. It does have a PAS add on, but in my experience it causes more problems. This new version is the way to go if you want to dip your toe into the cyclone water.
@@michaelsprinzeles4022 the dual chain isn't as much of an issue as some make out an if you run spiders and HD or UHD freewheel like those sold by sick bike parts you can cusrtomise your reduction gearing to suit your needs.... i've done over 9,000 miles with a 3 chain ring setup 1 for the motor 2 for the rear drive like a mtb
@@arronjohnston742 I didn't suggest it can't be done just that it may require more work getting chainlines right. I had a hard enough time getting my chainline right on my 1st BBSHD build (knew on the second build to bypass the stock ring and get a Lekkie with the BBS02 & it was plug-n-play easy).
Hey I got some questions for you: 1. Is a gravel/cyclocross bike duable to install a cyclone on? I have an MTB as well that I can also upgrade, but just curious... The MTB is a little on the heavy side....I thought a lighter bike and thinner tires = better for air dynamics and therefore speed. 2. Is there a compatible torque sensor that can work with a Cyclone? From what I've read online - Cyclone's Pedal Assist is...unreliable? 3. If I go with 3-chain rings, 1 46 and the other small, is there some way that I could use a front delailer? Or do I have to finger move the chain when i need to climb a steep hill? 4. Are E-Gears a must-upgrade if I go with a cyclone? How is gear change detected to switch off the motor when I switch gears?
I've got the older Cyclone 3000w double 44t chain-ring setup (from Luna, purchased 2016), outer ring for motor drive, inner for the other for the drive chain. I added a 32t lower gear sprocket, and front derailleur. I did this before actually riding and then realizing the Cyclone 3k watt is like a Cobra 427 (too much motor torque for any normal bicycle/rider. I actually love it (I'm a motorcyclist and liken it to a 1970's Honda S90 in acceleration (0-20mph same as normal car traffic 6-7 seconds), but top speed limited to 35 mph (I'm running only 52volts. Basically can chase buses in city traffic). In retrospect, I didn't need to add the 32t 2nd sprocket since the Cyclone torques up steep hills while still in 44t front sprocket. But like the Cobra, this can drain you 20ah battery within 25 miles if you blast around like a moto bike (but can get up to 80 miles if you take it easy and pedal assist. So i use the 32t for hill climbs mainly to "sip gas" and to extend range. Long story short: I don't think this new single 36T sprocket version needs a double/triple front sprockets.
Not sure if JNO or Luna sells a gear shift sensor for the Cyclone kits (and I'm not sure if the standard Cyclone controller accepts the lead from a gear shift sensor. I.e. with the Cyclone 3k watt, its always best to shift ONLY using your own pedaling. NEVER shift using motor power (unless on level ground or down hill where there is no load. The Cyclone will tear your bike to pieces (drive train and rear wheel) if you don't use common sense.

Many do not know how to shift and break their bikes and then pay 1000s to fix it, i usually shift with no load on my normal bike so I've been riding it without gear issues for like 5 years now. I've been thinking about either getting Cyclone or Lightning Rod Small Block (6kW) to build an ebike from scratch using Vector/Eleek frame with a big battery (2kW). I'm just looking for the most efficient motor there is so I can do very long range with pedal assist and small amounts of throttling.

I don't like the way the motor hangs out on the left side of the bike along with the hose clamp situation. I'm sure they could come up with a much more elegant way of securing the motor in place.
Kind of negates size of chain ring, basically your riding using 11 to 14 tooth sprocket in the front, might be a good thing 😀 I do not know. Kind of want to fabricate my own mid drive, just need to figure out much room i have for a motor, in relation to pedals with wider mid motor double chain cranks
I've been looking into all the usual suspects in mid drives and always keep coming back to cyclone. I've checked their website and their latest model listed is still the 2919 did they decide against a full rollout of the 2022 or was there another reason??

I contacted CYC recently on delivery times, they said they are now just getting caught up since COVID and air freight is the better choice of delivery method to cut that time down.

Definitely. The cyclone is not for everyday riding. I always say it’s only for if you really want make your bike into a 100cc dirt bike without the gas engine

I was thinking of a single baby rubber band would suffice, but who am I to question state of the art thing hose clamps on a steaming hot motor?!

In my experience, i have never had any problem with cyclones, the only catch is, i have them directly pull the read wheel.

Just a small observation, but with a little vibration and movement it looks like that motor lead wire could rub and get cut on that sharp hose clamp.
Ya, the motor can be spun in 90 degree increments so the the cable comes out at almost any angle you need. That “should” help for most people.

I have an 83 mm dh frame. Looking to use an Isis system. Was wondering if the bottom bracket needs to be longer on ones side as I've just found. Out there might be two different cyclone 83 mm bb types one that isn't offset. and both are 148 I believe .Also I just purchased the spank hex steel driver hub so that' should be good to go for the wheel .
For support on the cyclone you can check out a UA-cam page called high voltage. High voltage also has a discord page where you can learn as well as teach what you have learned yourself about the cyclone. Great videos Johnny, keep them coming.

iv got the 3000w and 7500w, this looks like it would be alot better for the 7500w.
i think the 3000w chainwheels are 52-48 the 7500w is 52-22.
im more looking better ways to clamp it down to stop the flex, did it help with that?

That thing will destroy front sprocket in first rides, but than.. hey... it is actually do not create a lot of load on it - it is freewheel. All it is doing if you not pedal - only keeping chain. It looks like this is moving the motor to the left. How does it feel pedaling the bike with the crank arm so far off?
If needed do you think you can fit a tensioner between the motor and the crank?
Probably not great pedaling feel but realistically, with 3k watts, how much pedaling is going to be done.
I can feel the uncomfortableness if barely even rideable pedal wise. After all it is a bicycle, and one wants to pedal to get exercise, and get the best battery life from this 3,000w mid drive in particular. You’d seemingly go through 20amps in a half hour if your lucky assuming it’s a 48-52 volt battery.

@Joe U - that was initially one of my questions too. But if the chain tensioner is on the bottom in this case, it would pull on the rear derailleur cage, so it would be pointless. I'm just wondering about how to keep the chain from falling off the front sprockets in bumpy ride.

Just made my first e bike with. Had to make custom braket and weld to frame.. kept twisting stock braket.. and those hose clamps but scary. But I put motor inside frame. Stretch bike. Making video asp finely got bugs worked out. I think..lol

I think there are three bolts that hold the case together and open up to the planetary gears. Use a high quality automotive gear lube and don’t go crazy on putting too much in. Remove all the old stuff first.

This would get you to 45-50mph. However the 72v CYC motor is much better of a motor kit. I’ll try to go live later today to show the new motors 👍
I have been using a cyclone 3K for about 4 years now and has been working great. Do they claim any new improvements in the motor? Is there a new kit; motor, controller & display?
I don’t think they have ever changed the motor itself. They just implemented the sw900 display.

@@paulawestcott7228 My Cyclone Mini shut down on my first ride (before I knew what I was doing). Too hot to touch! I was in my highest gear, going uphill! LOL!
What voltage you running? Mini is designed for 24 - 48 volt. Over that it runs hot. I was running 52V, with stock Kelly controller (old version, not programmable).
My solution? Always shift to appropriate gear, and use full power sparingly.

Thanks for keeping us all more educated & up to date. Since 1st researching motors the Cyclone has been of interest but I recognized my limitations and started with the BBSHD. I wanted PAS, never liked a dual chain setup and installation was beyond my skills with the previous Cyclone. After having done a couple of BBSxx installs I think I could install this new Cyclone. Does the new version offer PAS? Is this beast tameable with the right controller & some fiddling? I've read (in the past) its power can be overwhelming. Is it my imagination or is the left crank farther from the frame than the right?
With the display, it has 5 levels of power so on 1 it’s definitely very tame. It does have a PAS add on, but in my experience it causes more problems. This new version is the way to go if you want to dip your toe into the cyclone water.

@@michaelsprinzeles4022 the dual chain isn't as much of an issue as some make out an if you run spiders and HD or UHD freewheel like those sold by sick bike parts you can cusrtomise your reduction gearing to suit your needs.... i've done over 9,000 miles with a 3 chain ring setup 1 for the motor 2 for the rear drive like a mtb
@@arronjohnston742 I didn't suggest it can't be done just that it may require more work getting chainlines right. I had a hard enough time getting my chainline right on my 1st BBSHD build (knew on the second build to bypass the stock ring and get a Lekkie with the BBS02 & it was plug-n-play easy).

Hey I got some questions for you:
1. Is a gravel/cyclocross bike duable to install a cyclone on? I have an MTB as well that I can also upgrade, but just curious... The MTB is a little on the heavy side....I thought a lighter bike and thinner tires = better for air dynamics and therefore speed.
2. Is there a compatible torque sensor that can work with a Cyclone? From what I've read online - Cyclone's Pedal Assist is...unreliable?
3. If I go with 3-chain rings, 1 46 and the other small, is there some way that I could use a front delailer? Or do I have to finger move the chain when i need to climb a steep hill?
4. Are E-Gears a must-upgrade if I go with a cyclone? How is gear change detected to switch off the motor when I switch gears?
I've got the older Cyclone 3000w double 44t chain-ring setup (from Luna, purchased 2016), outer ring for motor drive, inner for the other for the drive chain. I added a 32t lower gear sprocket, and front derailleur. I did this before actually riding and then realizing the Cyclone 3k watt is like a Cobra 427 (too much motor torque for any normal bicycle/rider. I actually love it (I'm a motorcyclist and liken it to a 1970's Honda S90 in acceleration (0-20mph same as normal car traffic 6-7 seconds), but top speed limited to 35 mph (I'm running only 52volts. Basically can chase buses in city traffic). In retrospect, I didn't need to add the 32t 2nd sprocket since the Cyclone torques up steep hills while still in 44t front sprocket. But like the Cobra, this can drain you 20ah battery within 25 miles if you blast around like a moto bike (but can get up to 80 miles if you take it easy and pedal assist. So i use the 32t for hill climbs mainly to "sip gas" and to extend range.
Long story short: I don't think this new single 36T sprocket version needs a double/triple front sprockets.
Not sure if JNO or Luna sells a gear shift sensor for the Cyclone kits (and I'm not sure if the standard Cyclone controller accepts the lead from a gear shift sensor. I.e. with the Cyclone 3k watt, its always best to shift ONLY using your own pedaling. NEVER shift using motor power (unless on level ground or down hill where there is no load. The Cyclone will tear your bike to pieces (drive train and rear wheel) if you don't use common sense.

Many do not know how to shift and break their bikes and then pay 1000s to fix it, i usually shift with no load on my normal bike so I've been riding it without gear issues for like 5 years now. I've been thinking about either getting Cyclone or Lightning Rod Small Block (6kW) to build an ebike from scratch using Vector/Eleek frame with a big battery (2kW). I'm just looking for the most efficient motor there is so I can do very long range with pedal assist and small amounts of throttling.

No, just less than 74mm. If you’re BB is 73-74mm you probably won’t be able to install the outer lock ring, which really is just decorative.

I don't like the way the motor hangs out on the left side of the bike along with the hose clamp situation. I'm sure they could come up with a much more elegant way of securing the motor in place.
Kind of negates size of chain ring, basically your riding using 11 to 14 tooth sprocket in the front, might be a good thing 😀 I do not know. Kind of want to fabricate my own mid drive, just need to figure out much room i have for a motor, in relation to pedals with wider mid motor double chain cranks

I've been looking into all the usual suspects in mid drives and always keep coming back to cyclone. I've checked their website and their latest model listed is still the 2919 did they decide against a full rollout of the 2022 or was there another reason??

The peddle chainring is not used by the motor except as a guide so the teeth on it is only used by you peddling I believe.

I contacted CYC recently on delivery times, they said they are now just getting caught up since COVID and air freight is the better choice of delivery method to cut that time down.

Definitely. The cyclone is not for everyday riding. I always say it’s only for if you really want make your bike into a 100cc dirt bike without the gas engine
