    I went to see the latest version at the Bridge Theatre last night, which is more of an immersive staging. We were sat as I can't stand for the full duration of a show, but it was a very clever way of staging that I felt I could experience just as well from the gallery. It has to be said that Cedric Neal as Nicely was incredible in Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat. Three encores, each getting better and better. Not seen a live performance quite like it. Because so many of the audience are surrounding the stage in the centre of the space, and it being a comparatively small space to begin with, there was a really sense of involvement from everyone many of whom were dancing along (and encouraged to do so). I was still bopping to it as I got off the train a couple of hours later.

      I caught that show a couple of weeks ago, that was really something else. To be fair though, the separately-rising stage panels are very unique so not every place could replicate that.

    Saw this TONIGHT in the West End!! One of the best renditions of Sit Down I've ever heard - I was virtually screaming at the end of it! The MD has to get some serious praise for this absolutely sick arrangement!

    • @MrUptownman2000
      @MrUptownman2000 7 років тому +1

      agreed. I played Nicely years ago and although the music is slick to begin with, the MDs ending was spectacular!

      The arrangement is so vanilla, particularly when you compare it to the 1992 NT and Broadway revivals.

    Saw this about two weeks before Rebel went in. Have to say it's the best production of Guys & Dolls the West End has ever seen, even better than the 2005 production with Ewan McGreggor and Jane Krakowski. It was massivly underrated by audiences, it's one of the best things I've ever seen. So well crafted, musically as well as on stage. Also the best Olivier performance to date along-side The Book of Mormon I think

    I wish he did it sincerely like Stubby Kaye. This actor hams it up too much and it doesn’t carry the same transformative plot point as in the film. When Stubby Kaye did this number, you BELIEVED his character truly had found religion and genuinely wanted to change his life. Which adds to the plot and sort of validates the Mission as a legitimate member of the neighborhood. In this performance, the actor does the opposite- this version of Nicely Nicely seems to mock the Mission and gives the audience the feeling the Mission is an outsider in the community; the butt of an inside joke rather than an accepted part of the community.

    There'll never be another Stubby Kaye: he had the art of under-playing and letting the song do the work.. This actor has a lovely voice but the presentation is over-acted and far too ''busy'' ... and rather slow!

    • @b13ne
      @b13ne Рік тому +1

      Definitely agree. This is so overacted that you miss the point of the number. All the cho
      reography in the second part simply destroys everything. Stubby Kaye in the film is pure perfection.

  • @smartymarty2351
    @smartymarty2351 5 років тому +3

    It's been a few years since this, but, Wow, what a perfectly good way to ruin a number originally created perfect by its simplicity. The problem with Broadway musicals these days - everything has to be a show stopper. I think it should be referred to as "The Greatest Showman Syndrome."
    No fault to the actors or Nicely Nicely.

    • @eliasbernstein
      @eliasbernstein 5 років тому +3

      Smarty Marty I see what you are saying, but I disagree. This number was originally created in the stage show to be a showstopper number. This and Luck be a Lady are the two big numbers in the musical. I believe they ruined this number by not making it enough of a showstopper and too slow and dreary.
