So Many Rocks - The Most Frustrating 50ft of Trail - Route 301 Ep. 7

  • We are tackling one of two remaining sections of our backyard mountain bike trail Route 301. This was easily one of the most frustrating bits of trail I've ever worked with. The area where the trail dumps out is littered with rocks, roots, and in the wet seasons is quite muddy. There's a reason why I've been putting off this project for so long, but in the end. it all came together.

    I’ll bet you’re glad you picked the fancy thumb bucket feature! That looked hard enough even with it. Fair play 👊🏼

    I'm thinking finding a rock/root garden like that could also be seen as striking gold! Work not even needed 😅

      Ha, well there's no shortage of awkward flat rock gardens in New England, but for some reason it still hasn't quite become the mtb capital of the world :P

    Great episode! Can’t wait to see where the trail goes. The last montage music track that you have been using reminds of a GI-Joe vs cobra battle. That one sound is the same as the button on the backpacks they had

      There's a time and a place. This isn't the trail for a rock garden for several reasons. 1. Frankly don't enjoy rock gardens. They're fine on a race course but its not what i want to ride on the daily 2. This area is flat and we are trying to conserve as much speed as possible. 3 the dirt in between is very organic and it will get muddy 4. This is a multi season trail and having rocks stick up makes it hard to use on skis early season. 5. I dont need to justify doing what ever i want in my own yard

    Loving these videos on 301 Phil! Keep it coming. It might be the one thing keeping me sane while thinking about the early spring season.
    How's everything been holding up with drainage? Any key spots your planning to fix?

    • @PhilsWorld
      @PhilsWorld  Рік тому +2

      There's only one potential problematic section caused by an underground spring. We'll have to wait until the snow melts to see how it does. But everything else has worked as intended.

      @@PhilsWorld That's great. I've been helping the local trail management organization the last couple years, and it's always humbling how much I keep learning about building sustainable trails.

      That's great! I love going to our local volunteer days. One thing I like to remind myself there's no such things as a trail maintenance free trail. Even highways planned by teams of civil engineers and have huge budgets are not maintenance free, but building things the right way, usually means more time riding and less time fixing. :)

    Maasdam Rope Puller works wonders for putting extra tension on stubborn or dead trees you want to go your way. I thought about using a come along like that but found the rope puller to really be super easy and you can get well out of the way. Keep up the good work on the trails.

    Dude, you live in Vermont! Isn't it supposed to be rocky? It's not the Granite State next door, but ... To be honest, I thought that all the places where you found dirt to build with was pretty lucky. 🤣

    • @PhilsWorld
      @PhilsWorld  Рік тому

      Depending on the area on the trail its rockier than others. Usually you can find a spot that's rock free but this section was just littered with rock and very little dirt. Mosy of the other sports there's a lot more material to work with.

  • @loamchasers
    @loamchasers Рік тому

    I obviously don’t know the whole situation but usually you’re able to fell a tree to anywhere with just the wedges. Just seemed risky using a come along. But good work didn’t land on you👍😂

    • @PhilsWorld
      @PhilsWorld  Рік тому +3

      I'm not an arborist so I'm sure there's a better way. The tree had a slight lean in the opposite direction that I fell it. The only wedges i had bottomed out on the hinge wood so used the come along to pull it just enough to get past the tipping point. I don't see how that was risky.
