- Welcome back to Next-Gen Console Watch, our show following all the news and rumors on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. This week, Daemon Hatfield is joined by the usual crew of Ryan McCaffrey, host of IGN's Podcast Unlocked, and Max Scoville, host of Beyond!, IGN's PlayStation podcast. And as we do every year around this time, we grade how each of these "next-gen" consoles did. Do you agree with our takes? Let us know in the comments!

The start of the generation feels slow because it was slow. While the hardware has been released 3 years ago, the tech stack is decidedly stuck years behind the hardware. Most current-gen games feel like they are souped up version of last-gen games (higher resolution, higher frame rate) because well they are. Biggest example being all these UE4 games. UE4 is a game engine built around last-gen consoles and struggles when given more horsepower (looking at you Star Wars Jedi: Survivor). Until we see more games build around genuine current-gen tech (like UE5), this feeling will continue. Spiderman 2 is one of the few that made the genuine leap. Almost all the big studios (Ubisoft, Capcom) have not.
Compare that to the start of last-gen. For example, AC Unity was built for the Xbox One and PS4 and it melted those consoles down. Ubisoft built an entire new engine (AnvilNext) for it and there was no way a 360 or PS3 could have run it.

PS5 lunch line up had the best of any PlayStation generations. Sony first party studios take advantage of the new hardware amazingly and Jim Ryan was heavily criticized when said that they want to focus on games optimised for PS5 and move on from PS4
360/PS3/Wii era was easily the best

The PsVR2's biggest failing is it's only usable with the PS5. Had Sony made it PC compatible it can go against the Quest Meta while still being PS5 usable

Afaik, they couldn't unless they do a price hike as just like the ps5 it self, the PsVr2 is sold at loss so they would have any valid reasons to make it go on an open market like pc where they wouldn't get any returns. They just failed to support the hardware and that a huge bummer for them cuz that thing is really incredible
Yeah it would be a welcome addition for PC. However, Sony might decide against it because optimising it for the relatively few PS5 titles is far simpler than optimising the huge majority of PC games and pushing updates, which would involve more work and expense on Sony's part. Hence, they won't bring it to PC. :(
Nah. It’s still the biggest selling vr unit ever. Sony know what they are doing not some losers in the comments section.
For me, the best console generation is between 16-bit and 32-bit. A LOT of games from that time were REALLY fun, creative and ORIGINAL ideas. In fact, they are the reason for all of today's remakes. THOSE games helped give rise to the games we have today.
The 90s was the golden age for me of gaming

After xbox360/ PS3 it became less about the games and entirely about graphics and presentation to justify next gen hardware just for the sake of it. The era of gaming from NES to xbox360 and everything in between will never be exceeded by the next gens
This generation has been terrible for AAA single player games. Back in the 360 days you got one every couple of months practically, this time you're struggling for one a year. The best game I've played on my Series X is RDR2 at 4k. Embarrassing.

PSVR2 has actually had a more exciting year than PS5 & XBS. Red Matter 1 & 2, Hubris, Gran Turismo7, Resident Evil Village, Horizon Call of the Mountain, Propagation Paradise Hotel, The 7th Room, & upcoming Arizona Sunshine 2, Vertigo 2, & Ultrawings 2. Software has been phenomenal.
It is interesting that every single game nominated in the VR category at The Game Awards this year is on PSVR2.
Most of those have been out on the quest 2 for a while

naw...playstation is miles ahead of xbox. since the PS5's release we had Miles Morales, Kena, Sackboy, ratchet and clank, Ragnarok, Forspoken, Returnal, Horizon forbidden west, GT7, Spiderman 2, FInal Fantasy, Destruction all stars, Demon Souls. but since some of these came out on PS4, you gamers want to move the goal post. Xbox list since release is nowhere near playstation releases. especially this current gen exclusives. starfield, hifi rush and forza motorsport are the only current gen exclusives for series x if you want to go that route. compare those 3 to spiderman 2, Rift apart and Returnal.

The consoles have only been widely available for about a year. So for many people it does feel like only at the start of the generation.

well xbox has had 4 first party releases this year, 3/4 being huge successes with millions of players.
Reality is the PS5 has no games this year, no games next year, an inferior subscription service.

Playstation released most of its first party already, with the exception of Spiderman 2 which is a massive success, to focus on the launch of PSVR2 (which is already selling better than its predecessor). It's kind of amusing that every year since the launch of xbox one literally 10 years ago has been an apology from xbox commentators promising that Microsoft's ducks are now in a row and NEXT year will be the year they turn things around.

In terms of memories? PS3/Xbox/Wii, specifically the Wii fills me with so much nostalgia. In terms of quality of games? I'm a big fan of the PS1 era, but the PS4/Xbox/Switch have had some of the best games I've ever seen.

I'm a PS fan and I'll say Ryan isn't even wrong. The "PS guy" saying that quantity is better than quality is literally backwards. IDK if this was recorded a while ago but we've recently seen that the Portal is selling pretty well. Sounds like he is salty because he wants to talk about games rather than play them.
Right. He's giving a measured, thoughtful and accurate critique of the current direction of Sony and how they are currently developing their hardware and software, how they are treating you as a consumer and he's the salty one?
As a XBSX owner, it's a C+ for me. And that's only due to the very recent releases and factoring upcoming ABK stuff coming to gamepass. 2022 was plain brutal.
It's an A for me just cos of the hardware, still waiting on them great first party games if they ever happen.

Why did they get two xbox fans on this show? Max talked about gamepass just as much as Ryan. Why did Max not mention a single damn game ps5 game either that recently came out? Why was credit not given to exclusive psvr2 games like synapse, firewall ultra, and switchback? Why did a price increase for ps plus and "playstation isn't like gamepass" drop it to a C? No quality AAA games from Xbox. Sony and Nintendo have an identity Xbox does not. They are just dumping games out like Disney putting movies out and not focus on quality only quantity.

Well done Max for saying it how it is. I’ve had every PlayStation, this gen has been lacklustre at best so far. The only thing I’ll say is the PS3, and PS4 both had pretty slow starts. It was the second half of those gens where things really took off.

Xbox has the better multiplayer exclusives by a long shot and PlayStation has the better single player exclusives.
Neither Xbox or PlayStation has exclusives on par with Nintendo.

Game pass this generation has been A+ so I'ma give Xbox the higher grade.

@@davidj8321 Sea of Thieves, Grounded, Age of Empires, Forza Horizon, and Halo are all great multiplayer experiences. These games are not available on Nintendo or PlayStation. These games are better multiplayer experiences than any Nintendo or PlayStation 1st Party offering and its not even close.

You didn't mention the positive stuff Sony did this year, like adding Dolby Atmos for speakers and soundbars. They've actually done a great job with firmware updates adding features people wanted, like the ability to mute the startup beep. (It might sound silly, but that was actually a big deal for many people.)
🤣 Yeah how many years behind from Xbox? I've had Dolby Atmos, VRR and many other normal HDMI 2.1 features since my Xbox One X in 2017! 🤦♂

@@Famuboy2007It was never a timed exclusive, according to the dev. A timed exclusive requires a contract in which the dev cannot even comment if the game will be coming out in a competing platform, which is not the case for BG3.

If the main and biggest issue with the ps5 just a price hike then a C seems low.
You have to also factor in missing features that took 3 years to implement and still are missing some from the ps4.

It’s crazy to me that’s the person that runs the IGN PlayStation podcast don’t know that death stranding 2 is exclusive and PlayStation owns that IP. They also have games like Stellar Blade (2nd party), Rise of the Ronin (2nd party), Phantom blade zero (2nd party) Silent Hill 2 remake (third party), there’s also fairgames (1st party) concord (1st party) that’s coming out 2024 and BEYOND. Also it’s a known fact that console prices are going up now down because of inflation, which is affecting every single goods and services in the world, so idk why he thinks the game industry wouldn’t be affected. How on earth someone that so unknowledgeable about PlayStation runs the PlayStation podcast, BEYOND at that!

Had the Xbox for nearly 3 years. Absolutely dead! Game pass has loads but hardly anything worth playing! It’s an absolute myth. Got a ps5 3 months ago and it’s light years ahead!

The Ps4 came out in 2013 and is still getting games like Horizon Forbidden West . The Ps5 is worth it just to replay ps4 games at 4k/60fps with ssd loading times ..

No Meta Quest 2 grade?? That was a huge jump for meta, it’s been also out for 3 years. Quest 3 is my primary console but 2 has all the same exclusives/game’s. Also free online play and the cheapest monthly subscription service with quest plus.

You literally can say the same about PlayStation. Also, there's a reason why Sony is pivoting to GAAS games. Once these Single player games are completed, that's it.
My favorite console generation was ps1 to ps2...ps2 brought the new generation of games and xbox enters the "wars" and Nintendo continued to stay relevant after it owned the previous generations... gaming now is so different bc devs and pubs love to bring out half baked games with patches...hate to say it but Sony at least still delivers single player, completed, games which is rare today.

Xbox has been a failure for over 10 years. None of their games matter, and no one is buying an Xbox. For IGN to give Xbox a "B" is so darn laughable.

Had MS done any better or sold more Xboxes than PS5s then the Activision Blizzard deal would have been less likely to happen. You can't have it all. MS playing a long cloud game. Certain territories it's hard to leverage console where a phone or PC is more easily accessible. Smart to focus on moving the Xbox ecosystem across multiple devices through subscription/cloud etc. The next Xbox you may not even need in your home and could come with a specific cloud subscription. MS again is playing a very long cloud software ecosystem strategy with Activision Blizzard. The PS5 consoles sales only seem super impressive now but what will it look like 7 years from now?
