Leica Sends Me a CL; I Shoot the HECK Out of It.

  • After testing the Leica TL2 and CL last year and a lengthy back and forth over which one I liked better - even flirting briefly with the idea of going full-out for an M10D - I happened across a barely used TL2 on eBay at a price I just couldn’t pass up.
    Done!
    I added a new Visoflex Type 020, the tiny, manual focus Voigtländer Ultron 28mm f/2 and a no-name M to L adapter to round it out for my personal work.
    When Claudia and I flew over to London in early December, this is the kit I took with me. And I loved it. Loved the feel, handling, size, and unobtrusiveness of it. I loved the tilting EVF. Loved the imagery I got with it.
    Except when I wasn't practically pulling out what few hairs I have left in my head because of focus issues.
    My eyes just aren't what they used to be, even with focus peaking and focus magnification.
    And I learned you can’t set lens corrections on the TL2.
    So let me ask you this: in the realm of the material world, does it get much better than when - just days after you and your spouse return from a week of street photography in London with Sean Tucker and friends -- Leica reaches out to you; sends you a CL with that Eye-Res EVF and a pile of glass; and tells you, essentially, have a party? Shoot whatever you want?
    No.
    Now, I’ve been clear from day one that I don’t review Leica cameras the way I do other cameras. I KNOW I’m not objective about them because of my personal history with the brand going back to when I was 7 years old. It’s the brand that got me into photography, AFTER I held a single Kodachrome slide up to the light of a piece of driftwood at water’s edge my mother shot on a Leica IIIa she bought second hand from Bauhaus-trained photographer Hilde Hubbock.
    A camera which I still have.
    ANYWAY: the day after the gear arrived, Claudia and I promptly went up to NYC because - well, watch the video and you’ll see for yourself - and I shot the HECK out of it. No, I don’t get to keep that gear.
    But I AM selling my TL2 and getting the CL.
    You need to know that this video IS sponsored by Leica. But you also need to know -- I hope you already do -- that as always the opinions (and in this case joys and sorrows) expressed herein are my own.
    Abso-f-&%#!ng-lutely.

    Christ, man, this is a mini masterpiece. I've always enjoyed getting a Leica in hand, while never being able to own one. Maybe now with the L mount being a consortium we can have Leica CL/TL for street photography and fun, Panasonic for video and Sigma with that foveon for landscape and detail work. All using the same lenses and, hopefully, flashes. Just need to sell my apartment and live in a cupboard under my friend's stairs to pay for it all.

    Good stuff. I really enjoy your videos and thoughtful analysis. This likely sold me on the CL for all of the reasons you articulated, even going back to using earlier Leica film cameras. They do "encourage" a certain process and that process combined with a seamless tool and wonderful glass more often than not yield what one envisioned. My old M3 double stroke with that 50 Summicron dual range are a wonderful pair with a roll of tri-x, but as you mentioned the eyes are what they once were so I find myself more often with my lovely Oly Em1.2 and panasonic's Leica branded glass as a nice pair. For some applications the Oly is just "too fast" and I think the CL will fill that niche. Thanks for the great work you do.

      Joe McEarchern They were what made it most special, with the ability to fall back on that outstanding autofocusing TL 35/1.4. I really liked the little M 28/2.8, but my first piece of advice is to suck it up and get the factory original adapter because it transmits EXIF data.

    • @vicibox
      @vicibox 5 років тому

      Hmmm well it does sort of but, you are not going to get aperture and really that is the most important bit of EXIF you need and only Leica lenses will give you focal length. The Leica adapter for my TL2 is massively expensive so I couldnt recommend it. I bought my adapter from China for about £25 and it works perfectly and is a perfect fit for my Voightlander 28mm f2 Ultron, my vintage Leica 50mm Summicrons (no EXIF data to be had there) and with a Nikon to Leica M adapter my Nikkor 24mm f2.8D, 35mm f2D and 50mm f1.8D. I would love focal length and aperture in the data but none of these would provide it through the Leica adapter. I will say I get better images from the Nikkors than I ever did from a Nikon body ;-)

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  5 років тому

      Agreed, Vicki: not having the aperture in the EXIF data is a bummer - I should have mentioned it, but I will in our next video on it. I no longer have the Voigtlanders, but with the CL you can set the focal length of the lens unlike on the TL2.

    Hi Hugh, don't give up on your TL2 with the Visoflex. I realized recently that these fine but older lens designs such as the Voigtlander Ultron 28mm f:2 are actually out-resolved by the modern EVFs; you end up trying to find the least blurred image instead of a crisp, sharp outline. Hence the manual focusing frustrations you described.
    Of course that didn't stop me from fitting my Ultron 28mm to my CL as soon as your wonderful video finished and taking said combo on a walk round the block.

    • @3BMEP

    • @3BMEP

      Fauxtaku Lounge It is an inexorable merging of connectivity, computational imaging (we’ve seen nothing yet - just wait) and old school physics. Fascinating!

    • @FauxtakuLounge
      @FauxtakuLounge 5 років тому

      The sad part is that half of the cameras I currently use: X-H1, and GFX, and the X-T1 and X-Pro 1 before them, are next to useless with smartphones, despite the years. When I first picked up an X-Pro 1 I thought I would stay a loyal Fuji user. Superficially, they have things together: classic control schema and good JPEG engines. Of course, their film simulations are great. But looking deeper, they miss on every single angle Leica nail: uniform interface, simplicity, and now, quality of connective applications. So, I have an SL and two M10s. I just sold my M240 a year ago to fund one of the M10s. Fujifilm's poor design drove me to better design. But Leica's problem is that cost of ownership is sometimes too high to rationalise, and when it's not, the problems of service speed and centrality of service locations (really lack thereof) push them away from the fore. It's a shame that such Achilles Heals infest those whose failed but ostensible goals are tradition (Fujifilm) and those whose goals are integration and uniformity of design (Leica).
      Whatever the case, Leica's ability to weave nearly bleeding-edge connectivety into their cameras, some of which themselves are bleeding edge or close (SL, S3) and those that look and largely handle like something from the 50s (M10/P) is incredible. Thank you for the report. @@3BMEP

A no brainer choice for any Leica nut who may be ' over' the M and its rangefinder and manual focus only lenses and its silly bottom plate and all the 'nostalgia' trip that goes with it. I think you hit the nail on the head about the CL being the closest they've got to a 21st century M. Serious question here, but with only my experience of Fuji X cameras, why would someone choose the CL over, say, the X-E3 when the equivalent prime lenses are all phenomenal (the xf35mm f1.4 is very highly loved, for example) and the zoom (xf18-55 f2.8-4 vs the TL 18-56) is faster than the Leica?

      PS, as always, love the show!

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  5 років тому +1

      Well, first: I LOVED the X-T2; I now understand the love for the X-Pro2; I just named the X-T3 camera of the year; I love their 16/1.4 and 56/1.2; and have tremendous respect for their red badge zooms. I also love Fuji's approach to auto mode, because with most of their lenses I don't even need to have the camera turned on to set the exposure triangle - hallelujah! Second: with this written, I don't love either company's 18-56. Good focal range (the near equivalent of the holy trinity full frame 24-70, but they're not as wide nor as shallow as I'd like - and both are important to me. Third: I MUCH prefer the CL's EVF and feel in hand; and while lens IQ across the board with Leica meets or exceeds that of the Fujis, the TL 55-135 knocked my socks off because of the IQ, range and small size. Would I prefer a dedicated ISO button (or at least programmable to that, as it is on the TL2)? Yes. Do I wish Leica would make an M with EVF only, or update their VisoFlex Typ 020 to the spec of the SL's 4.4m dot Eye-Res EVF? Yes. Can you get AMAZING results with either camera? Yes. It really boils down to budget on the one hand - and inspiration and what makes you happy on the other. Truly.

I see what you mean when you say preferring the CL for feel in the hand; I held it in the Leica Porto store in Portugal. Maybe I don't have the kind of budget yet to support a CL, or maybe I'm trying to rationalize myself to it, or recognizing the CL has a much smaller lens lineup (not considering M-mount glass, because then we could include those with the Fuji as well), but I suppose that was where the question was coming from. Seriously though, thank you for the kind and generous response.

I is so nice to see someone loving shooting with a brand other than the big three, but also enjoying them to. I love the fat that a company has give you the opportunity to shoot with there kit and that you intend to buy. Yes Leica are not cheep but if you love there kit you will go out and use it. Well, I have to be careful watching your videos... I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a used CL with the 18mm kit lens. Of course I was immediately temped to shoot with it before even reading the quick guide.. Anyway, I went out and shot at everything I saw. The 18mm lens is quite good and produces beautiful images. I did have some trouble (and still do) trying to use the camera without reading te instructions.. I do hate to try to read the huge downloaded manual. It's just no fun. Pretty soon I looked online and ordered a cheap Fotasy M to L adapter so I could shoot in manual focus mode with my M mount lenses.
    Right away I, like you had problems manual focusing. I just could not get sharp images. I thought that perhaps the small and light envelope of the camera was not as easy to hold steady like the M240 body. I kept trying with various lenses and finally got some passable results with the 35mm Zeiss Biogon. Tried again walking through the GA Tech campus and shooting some with my 50mm collapsible Summicron. This resulted in many poor, blurred images. At home I tried my 50mm Summilux, 40mm f1.2 CV, and other lenses shooting with a tripod, got garbage. I began to thing there was something wrong with my lenses or the camera. Finally I did comparisons of the same lenses, same subject between the adapted CL and the M240. Results showed that the adapter was a piece of crap.
    I just went to eBay and pulled the trigger on a used Leica M to L adapter... Got it for less than half of the new price (still had to swallow hard to bid) I should receive it in a week or so. I certainly hope that solves my focus issues and blurred images. I certainly want to shoot with my wonderful Leica, Zeiss and Voigtlander lenses. I don't have the means to spend big bucks on Leica L primes. I'll see how things turn out. Wish me luck

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  4 роки тому +3

      Good luck! I found that I CAN focus manually on the CL (the TL2 with Typ 020 EVF was the problem for me) but you may come to terms with the fact (as I did) that these TL primes are spectacular and better than most M glass irrespective of manufacturer!

    Hugh, can I ask why on earth why someone would pay $5,600 for a Leica CL with the 18mm f2.8 and 35mm f1.4, when for $2,850 you could get a Fujifilm X-Pro2 with an 18mm f2 and a 35mm f1.4. That is just under $3,000 less for a superior system. My opinion of course, and I have used both.
    It just seems like a complete waste of good money.

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  5 років тому +1

      Chloe, I understand your perspective, but don't you think there are people out there who think differently, have different incomes and different priorities than you or I? Don't you think it's not more complicated than that? Many, many years ago (when I was still a student), we had a case study on coffee. Way back THEN, a cup of coffee at Harry's Bar in Venice, Italy cost $10. I don't recall how much it cost to brew a cup at home, but as of 2017 it appears to be about a nickel for 8 ounces. The point then, as it has always been, is that the difference was less about the coffee itself (call this, perhaps, the technical specifications) than the experience. I love the Fuji system - see my reviews -- but I paid my own hard cash for the TL2 and accoutrement. That's just me - but as I also often say, your mileage may vary and that's fine! For you, the differences don't warrant the incremental cost - in fact, looks like you may find them inversely correlated. I get it. What do you shoot, and what do you shoot with?

    First thought upon the UA-cam notification:
    “Great, a new video from Hugh and Claudia! Wait…, well, it will be good as always, but we still have to wait for the true gems to start rolling out of their shop again.”
    I’m talking about The Good World Gone Bad series, the interviews, the insightful (to the bone marrow) and educating (till your brain cells call the quits) stuff, you know…
    Second thought, 5min & 37sec later:
    “How, I mean HOW, does this man and his companion in life get to turn a short, biased, video for an overpriced niche product into something that so many people can relate to???” Every photographer and artist in general, every craftsman, every artisan producer, every engineer for life (from the “you better leave the choking hazard lego bricks in my cradle mom, or I’ll poop and scream the living hell out of your dipper stock and your sleep deprived nights” infant to the handyman ex-mechanic guest next door in your retirement home, even every frigging teenager working in his barely road legal nuts n’ bolts project in his dad’s garage, draws from the most tangible and precise, a tool, a satisfaction found only in the most intangible and vague, in passion.
    Yet, you manage to put it in words and images...
    Seriously, calling what I just saw the best Leica commercial ever would be 2019's (Happy New Year by the way) understatement of the year!.

      That’s for sure! Regarding eyesight: That’s one reason I’ve been interested in your videos on the Fuji system as well as the Leica gear. I recently bought the GFX 50S (over the R, partly because of that beautiful viewfinder on the S) and am enjoying learning how to use it effectively. It would be great if camera reviewers who wear glasses would comment more often on the experience of using the viewfinders (how hard or easy it is to see the whole field of view and to see the projected settings).
      Happy shooting and best wishes for the new year.

    Awwww sad to hear of your change to the CL; it isnt a camera I like I must admit. The camera has several deal breakers that ruled it out for me. For a start TLcameras are not my first choice, My favourite Leica is my X113 with Visoflex. This is the camera that changed my photography after a lifetime. I would take the fixed 23mm f1.7 Summilux with macro and leaf shutter over any TL lens any day; the images are just stunning and yes I do use the macrosetting. X113 is an APS mini Q with a tilting EVF and I love it. So why have I bought a TL2 ? Again the titling Visoflex which is now non-negotiable (first deal breaker. My other camera the GX9 also has tilting viewfinder). It is true to say I never use a straight viewfinder now, the change of view has changed my imagery for good which reduces the CL to backscreen only and that doesnt tilt either. The second deal breaker is just as serious; on trips I have come to rely on USB 3 charging and data transfer; this is the reason I dont take the X113 as, like the CL, you must take a separate charger. On trips I just take a 6 port USB charging block for all my devices. Finaly, I just dont like the erganomics of the CL.The X113 is pretty much old school with dedicated dials and lens barrel conrols and is as good as it comes from Leica having the same menu system as the Q and M. The TL2 strips that backand just uses touch screen which I am equally fine with. The CL seems a mess to me. However, the beauty of the Leica system is all tastes are covered and clearly you like the CL design; I however like ultramodern and the TL2 does it for me and it is set up pretty much like my GX9. This post is interesting because I havent metioned once the things that most reviewers find most important; I take image quality and build quality as a given with Leica. All these cameras are better than adequate so I really dont care what camera has what feature or what quality, I just have to be happy with it. Anyway, enjoy your camera and have fun as that is all that matters ;-)

    Another great video, Hugh! And my compliments to Claudia for the outstanding videography, as well. Personally, the CL is just not gonna be my cuppa. I read the DPR review of it when it launched in (Nov?) 2017, and like the TL, its just a bit too quirky for me. And, to be honest, I can't see dropping 4 large on that camera and a pancake lens, that's ~90% of the cost of a GFX50R, right there. Personally, I would have so much more fun with a OC/OL setup....my X100F for street photography. Which, come to think of it, you really should review some time. Lastly, and most importantly, though, _regardless_ of the camera you use, I *love* your street photography! Its just wonderful.

    Buy the leica 23mm f2, if you're eyes are having trouble with the TL2 they can be had for less than 1000 used, that lens lends itself to street photographs. The TL2 is a beautiful, nimble, dynamic sculpture.
    I use my old nikon AIS lens on TL2 and look for the red. the focus peaking isn't as in your face as with the fuji however it's there. since I bought TL2 and fuji XT2 I always use the back screen, like how my phone works. And I'm an old dude from film.
    Film was awesome it made you think you could feel the noodle heat up processing all the info. However the digital world let's you create the art you see in your imagination in camera. Instead of the darkroom, or lightroom/photoshop.
