Leica CL: EVF/AF M10, 1/3 Price, 2/3 Weight, 9/10 IQ

  • Unequivocally: the CL is a 1/3 the price, 2/3 the weight, 9/10 the image quality in the real world, M10 -- with the EVF I wanted AND the autofocus I occasionally need. It is THE most compact, cost effective and aesthetically integrated tool for M-glass, full stop.
    Of course, reasonable people may disagree, but the bottom line is: I'm trading in my TL2 for one.
    Purchase the Leica CL Street Kit at -
    B&H: bhpho.to/2CUboal
    Adorama: adorama.evyy.n...
    Other notes:
    1) Yep, that's the 60-year old slide in the opener that started my life-long love for photography, shot on a Leica IIIa by my mother, But taken in a rush on an iPhone, the shot of it doesn't begin to communicate what I saw as a small boy. I'll redress that at a later date.
    2) We are part of the affiliate programs at B&H and Adorama, so when you use our no-cost-to-you links above to purchase, we receive a small commission. THANK YOU for supporting our channel this way.
    3) I'm delighted that this video is brought to you by Leica (guys, thanks so much for making this possible) but they had NOTHING to do with the final content beyond being exceptionally patient with me and loaning me all the gear I asked for -- except for an SF 60 flash and SF C1 remote controller, but hey, I'm not a Mark Cohen or Bruce Gilden shooter, so it's fine.

    What I like about this guy is that he acknowledges his prejudices, but then he sets them aside and he learns, he learns, he learns. And then he teaches. He includes many little hints and gems about his process in each of these videos and he's is generous in doing so!

    What an amazing camera. Have had a CL for a month or so, bought it in a kit with the 18-56. I was fully prepared to be disappointed with that lens, but the quality of what I can achieve has shocked me with how much detail I can pull. Added the TL 35mm 1.4 a few weeks later for some portrait stuff and I'm nearly there!
    Have never owned a camera that made me think about using it 24/7, and my wife has caught the bug too. It's just so much fun to use in manual mode with the ease of use and rewarding IQ when you hit the mark. So happy with it we are contemplating buying another so there are no arguments haha.

    Absolutely enjoy your take on Leica. Everything you speak of is exactly why I prefer to shoot with Leica vs. all other cameras (and I've shot with many of them!). I think the CL is an excellent design and I love how it resembles the beautiful 3! Now, I need to decide between the Q2 or the CL. Last night I was determined it would be the Q2...but upon further consideration, the CL is once again entering the scene. Fantastic analysis of this camera.

    Gahhhhh! There goes that GFX50R I was saving up for. I’d never been interested in APS-C Leicas until I handled a CL at Park Cameras in Burgess Hill, soon after it arrived in the UK. As soon as I saw it in the cabinet, I thought, “There is the new Leica 1”. People say Leica 3, but it’s the 0 or the 1 I’m most reminded of. And even after a few minutes trying it out, my reaction was, “This is different; this is impressive.”
    Pros need cameras they can stake their livelihood on. This camera is not for them, but for people who take photographs for the sake of love: amateurs. We have to go back to the original meaning of “amateur” to be reminded that these are people whose labours are labours of love, not maladroit or botched but executed with craft, dedication, perhaps even infatuation. So a true amateur photographer wants a camera he or she can love like a much-loved friend; a camera they are delighted by, pleased to keep close at hand and which becomes instrumental and indivisible from the rest of their lives.
    Can you put a price on that?
    I like to be a slayer of truisms and so I am prepared to say that the best camera in the world is not the one you have with you, but the one you can’t put down.

    • @3BMEP

      BTW I would stake my livelihood on this camera. I've used lesser cameras for work and they did just fine. ;-)

    • @JennyDarukat
      @JennyDarukat 5 років тому +5

      That's a very nice way of putting it Simon. And while I haven't shot a Leica yet, I feel very similarly about my X-T1 despite my gripes with its (and the pancake I have practically glued to it) autofocus.
      You just enjoy shooting with it, and even if I miss a few shots, I think this is the camera that'll stay with me for a very long time - there's just something special about the black and white (and classic chrome) images coming out of it. The way the glass renders the image and the grain structure compliments it.
      Sorry I went off on a thing there for a bit - point being, keep the camera that speaks to your heart (and hands). People hop systems for specs so much, it's easy to get lost in all the digital bits. That's why I appreciate the comment sections under these videos so much - people sharing their thoughts on what they love, not tearing down one system or another for missing this or that feature. It's a great community.

    Have the CL for over a year now. It is the best travel and street camera I have ever used (23mm f2 TL, 60mm APO macro f2.8, the 35mm f1.4 is looming). The handling is sublime and so is the image quality. I shoot manual, mostly AF single point. The shooting experience is smooth and happens almost without any thought process, which is hard to put into words but an experienced photographer might understand. Yes, a tiltable screen would have been nice. I thought long and hard about the price but when they let me play with it in the shop there was no way back. The money is long forgotten, the joy of taking photos with it will remain for a long time to come.

    You really do raise some important points and issues by reviewing this camera and it's very timely in this current era of 'sensor wars'
    Especially within the online community, photography has become almost entirely about specs and numbers. People seem to view modern cameras purely as 'tech gadgets' but the fact is they're tools to facilitate a creative process and should be judged as such.
    We can all agree that a camera should be an extention of yourself and simply get out of the way.
    I swear most guys on Internet forums spend more time attacking other systems and brands, pixel peeping and analysing specs than actually taking photos.
    The Leica is such a simple yet high quality camera, full of personality and soul with no care about beating the latest tech-specs. Leica just rise above all that. It's such a refreshing approach and it really speaks to me.
    It harks back to a time when things were designed and built to last a lifetime, not just a 3 year product cycle (I'm looking at you, Sony...)
    Thanks for an insightful review as always!

    hi from Mexico! I couldn't have said it better myself re: what taking photos is all about, the entire experience. I am 100% Leica, they are works of art! Both the camera, the lenses, and the pictures they take, also the process of how you take them! How the photographer and the camera are married together, the feel of the camera, the balance, and the unmistakable quality of everything, including the end product. (the picture) Nothing, absolutely nothing compares to (this) renowned brand-german quality. I've been searching for a used Leica online on and off for a month or so, I scoped one recently on ebay, it was a D-lux 109, and the condition of it was appalling. It looked like the owner had been using it to hammer nails. :-/ (what's this world coming to?).. Thank you for your explanation on the functionality of the CL, ...I've also realized the appeal of this particular model, and am in the market for one, although the price is extremely restrictive..

    Best observation ever!!!.... the “feeling” of photography is in the hand, in the mind and in the eye. Thanks so much for this video, Hugh. I've had a Q since they came out and it's been my go-to street camera since I bought it. Recently, I ditched my FF frame Nikon for a SONY A7RIII, hoping that it would be my favorite "all-around" system. Thought I would like it on the street, but no... Then, I went a bit overboard and bought the CL street kit. (No, I don't have deep pockets, but I'm 70 years old. I'm getting what I want these days. Period.) I knew it would be a bit of an overlap with the Q, but, it turns out, it isn't. After that hour learning what I wanted in the menus and setting my shooting preferences, I now have two wonderful street cameras. Overkill? Maybe, but in the past I've had both a Leica ME and then a Leica M240, both of which were wonderful with both Leica and Zeiss glass, however, my aging eyes require autofocus. Both my current Leicas fill that bill. And, I've owned Fujis, including an XE-2. Sorry no comparison in terms of MY shooting style, especially MY street-shooting style.
    I do (finally) have a question. You say you mostly shoot in B&W. Just curious, do you shoot RAW + JPG, RAW and convert, or just JPG?

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  5 років тому

      I always shoot RAW+JPEG just in case, but I almost never use the raw files because I can get what I want out of the JPEGs, often SOOC. As for the rest: delighted that you’ve found the gear that makes you happy! My street kit coming soon!

    I just picked up a CL and, to me, this is still a wonderful camera in 2022. Once you figure it out (and it doesn't take long) it is so intuitive and effortless to use. I was turned off by the unmarked soft dials at first, until I realized the extraordinary flexibility they give you. It is "retro styled" but not slavishly so, and Leica wasn't afraid to break from tradition and make a few more modern, non-traditional design choices. The EVF is gorgeous, probably the thing that sucked me in the most. This line may or may not be discontinued (no official announcement that I'm aware of, yet) but I have no regrets - I think it will prove to be a cult classic, in fact.
    One thing I didn't understand is that you mentioned the ability to enter lens corrections for third party manual lenses - how? I'd love to pick up a set of the Minolta CLE M-Rokkors.

    I purchased a CL a week and a half ago with the 18-56 and will likely add the 23 f2 in a couple of months although the M glass is very tempting. The quality of the photos from the APS-C sensor are amazing and its convenient size makes you want to take it with you. I will admit that I felt very sick to my stomach after leaving the camera shop with my newly purchased Leica CL and a few TL lenses to use with it. So much cash spent - should I have bought the new Sony A7III instead??? Having said that, once I got out in the streets, CL in hand, I realized that I was truly enjoying this camera. It came along with me on a recent trip to Japan where I put it through the paces and had so much fun in the process. There is a beauty in the simplicity of this camera's design and usability. The TL lenses are very sharp. I bought the 11mm-23mm, the 23mm, and that sexy 35mm. I love this camera so much that I've felt compelled to write to Maike Harberts (the Product Manager for the CL and the TL series) and her team to thank them for delivering such an enjoyable product. I subscribed to your channel a while back, and greatly appreciate the work and detail knowledge you put into your reviews - especially this on the Leica CL.
    The Leica 'look' in terms of colour, contrast, clarity etc of the files, has beguiled me ever since I came across Leica as a camera brand and as a photography enthusiast. And then there's the build, the glass, the handling and general ergonomics, lack of extraneous menus and a wonderful sense of focus on the essentials for engaging and rewarding photography.
    I'm considering the CL as my first digital camera (excluding my iPhone) as my 35mm film Olympus rangefinder and RB67 Mamiya have all been gathering dust for years once the iPhone came along, and the convenience of having a camera always with me largely replaced having to lug either a studio camera around, or remembering to take the 35mm rangefinder with me on an outing.
    However for around the same size and weight, I'm also considering the Sony A7C - which is FF, along with the CL. Yes, it won't have the Leica look, but it will have the FF Shallow depth of field look rather than the APS-C look - which FF look I generally prefer looking at files.
    it also strikes me as being very versatile having both photographic and video capabilities, is nicely made and finished and can be used with a variety of lenses, including Zeiss.
    I'm not necessarily looking to do UA-cam video blogging, but I do have a number of outdoor hobbies and interests where it would be nice to shoot video clips as well as stills, to either share, or just to keep for enhancing memories of the experience. I gather one can also use the CL to do video clips, but the overall video capability is not as well developed as the A7C - at least that is my impression from reviews.
    With your review of the A7C, I gather you were quite impressed with it, especially from a philosophical design point of less being more.
    Having reviewed and tested them both; putting aside all the pros and cons between a FF hybrid still/movie camera in the Sony A7C, and the minimalist photographers tool in the CL, - if it was to be your one and only camera for casual shots of friends and family, travel, formal and candid portraiture, which would you choose to own?
    Many thanks for your work and such an excellent and entertaining channel.. :-)

      @3BMEP  2 роки тому +1

      Sony a7C is a compelling alternative to the CL for precisely the reasons you mention. If I could have only one or the other for ALL we do, it would have to be the Sony, specifically for its better video capabilities, including video AF. But for my personal street work? Already made that choice: CL. But with this said, on a value basis wit would still have to go to the Sony.

    • @Pisceanboi

      @@3BMEP Thank you for an insightful, thoughtful and unbiased response. I'm much more philosophically attracted to Leica, and if I could afford an SL2 there would be no contest. However my budget dictates CL or Sony, and in terms of versatility, the A7C is probably the better option as an OVERALL one camera only, choice. Still, whilst I like Sony, I love Leica, so it's proving to be a difficult choice to make. Thanks again for your brilliant channel and looking forwards to more of your excellent work. :-)

      @@3BMEP It has actually been fun, I know there are limitations with the camera but updates to the software have improved its performance. (Terrible video, beta version at the moment, so strictly for still work). It makes the whole experience of shooting very different for me being a traditional photographer. I miss looking through a view finder but love the instant feedback of the image being able to edit in camera with a big view screen, which you can upload almost instantly. Positives are its light weight compared to our medium format cameras and Canons, it is great for street work but it seems to excel with landscape/cityscape work. Down sides, having to use their software (very limited) to get images out of the camera, then to process in Lightroom etc. Sometimes the image quality isn't quite there yet but I put this down to it being a small start up company without the resources of the big players. It has a really slow start up time, when the battery say it's down to 20% power the live view starts to freeze, lag and cuts out. Auto focus slow but touch screen response is good. We knew it was going to be a beta model but it kind of feels like the future and I suspect phones will be offering something significantly better very shortly. I have used it everyday for about 8 months now and love it but ,and it is a really big but, I want something better. Which is why the Zeiss looks so interesting and something I would serious consider buying just for the lens quality, however I am old school at heart and I feel myself being pulled back to what I think a camera should look like. Please review the Zeiss when you can hold of one and the Panasonic S1(R). Cheers Tim

Consequently, my pictures are objectively better... So CL, M, SL : you can't choose on the camera's performance or sensor size, or whatever only.... The PLEASURE you have with your gear is the key.

    another reason to consider the CL is that Leica is part of the consortium with Sigma and Panasonic supporting/adopting the L mount. Both the Leica CL and the new Panny S1 use the L mount, and Sigma is going to move its lens collection, presumably including the Art series, to L mount. Soooooo.....you could run the Panny S1 for video, and carry the CL as your street photo cam, and use less expensive (but super high quality) glass from Sigma on both. And, if you won the lottery, you could actually use Leica glass on your Panny, including those elegant and supremely expensive Leica zooms......in short, a pretty flexible position....keep amassing great glass, and trade out the bodies every couple of years......

      FWIW I have two Leica CL's......not the 21st century versions but 1973 versions (made in partnership with Minolta) which came with 40mm and 90mm m-mount lenses at the time, but to which I recently added a Voigtlander m-mount 21mm and the spectacularly bright 21/25 viewfinder (a combo that cost more than the original CL). It's my back up for when all electronics fail totally and I'm left with the sunny 16 rule (ps - the early light meters in the old CL's don't work, no matter how many times repaired). Great, great fun to shoot with, of course using the orthodox tri-x 400 most of the time but sometimes getting the benefit of modern heretical ISO expansion by running 3200 through them......enjoy your videos very much....

    Ive handled a CL in the new Leica store in Melbourne. A very nicely built camera indeed. I use an fuji x-t3 W/ a Leica 50mm summilux f1.4. Curious how you found this combination compared to the CL? I find the exposure triangle on the fuji intuitive enough to not need to get into the menu. The 3.69 evf plus the speed updates, plus the modest sensor MP update prompted me to update from the x-t2. Found it quite the combo with the summilux.

    Another wonderful presentation. Thank you. Your delivery is so unique, interesting and informative. I have dipped in and out of photography and was perhaps at my most happy using a Rollie B35 and the fantastic Contax T2. Moving on 3 or 4 decades I have embraced digital. I finally felt at home with a Fuji X100T. Tried the X100V but ultimately decided that I didn't feel comfortable with what I perceived as an overheating issue. I think perhaps that the CL is for me. Maybe combined with the 23mm F2 lens followed by others when I can afford it.
    That Leica signature look appeals as does the cameras build and feel.
    I like street and landscape photography.
    A question if I may. Does the Leica 23mm F2 lens in combinaion with CL give that Leica signature look and finally is its rendering and sharpness edge to edge impressive ?
    I value your opinion. Thank you.

    Whatever your point and reference to mum's IIIa, I did not see the original CL referenced. In the film days, if I ever had bought a compact, it would have been the CL. It threatened the film M too much, I guess.

      JP dJ I think you’re right. Separately: I didn’t mention the 35mm CL because naming aside, it truly is not the camera to which the new CL’s designers paid homage

    • @jpdj2715
      @jpdj2715 5 років тому

      @@3BMEP- paying homage is generally done by people buying it ;). The original had the M bayonet and was Leica branded and TTL metering. And with the fourty-something lens would easily fit a gentleman's trench coat pocket. Today's Mini by BMW may not pay homage to the original and be larger than a VW Golf/Rabbit but comparison with the original name bearer is obligatory. IMNSHO

    Hello Sir,
    I am looking for a camera for landscape photography. I have already a Q. The CL interested me. May I ask you, how long can I setup the shutter speed for long exposure? Thank you.

  • @charleyhitsimon

    Thank you very much for this wonderful video! I really enjoy your "reviews" that are not simple lists of specs but have a wonderful theatricality to it. I am very much with you wanting an EVF because entering the second half of my fourties and having worn glasses all my life I love rangefinder cameras but use them with external viewfinders. Like my beloved Minolta CLE and Leitz Minolta CL. Both are just perfect in my hands. Too bad Leica didn't continue the shutterspeed dial on the front of the camera which is such a perfect position for it. I tried the "new" digital CL a couple of weeks ago and must say it is truely wonderful and it might replace or add to my M8 which does wonderful colour and amazing b&w but I more and more tend to shoot indoors which isn't the CCDs preferred habitat. I was wondering just one thing and maybe you could enlighten me. When you shoot .jpg b&w does the EVF turn to B&W like Fujifilm cameras do and therefore do colour and saturation modifications in the menu reflect in the EVF? Keep up the wonderful work, Christian

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  4 роки тому +1

      Christian Holemy it does indeed turn B&W, which I prefer for composition purposes. Never tried to determine if the EVF is affected by changes in other parameters, sorry!

      @@sirchicken2940 Hi...two days later 😉. Well a lot has changed in my life. My wonderful twin girls were born a little over a year ago. So I wanted something with a nice autofocus that would adapt m-mount lenses not as badly as some mirrorless do. And I wanted full frame...so I went for a used Nikon Z6 and I must say I was not disappointed. BUT only today I took my old M8 with me to a visit to my parents and the files just look so wonderful. They have a very very nice look that the Nikon not really can emulate. Many attribute that to the CCD Sensor and I tend to agree. But trying to shoot toddlers with my M8 or my film rangefinders without stopping down to at least f8 is really hard. What are you thinking about getting?

      @@charleyhitsimon hahahaha that’s absolutely great!Congratulations with your daughters! Judging from your thoughtful camera decision I’m sure you’ll be a loving and thoughtful father! I was thinking of getting a CL, but I have the option of selling my RX1 , those M8 colours are a beauty and I’m too sentimental to sell it. I think you helped me agree that I should keep the M8!

    You could read the local Sydney telephone book for me and I would listen intently, slowly escaping into a meditative state with heart rate and breathing dropping to the absolute minimum levels to sustain meaningful life. I am considering purchasing the CL and am torn between the 18mm fixed and 11-23mm lenses. Are you still as impressed by this camera as you were when you produced your video and could you perhaps help with my lens choice predicament? Thanks, Ralf

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  4 роки тому +1

      8strings 😉 The only thing that’s changed is now we BOTH love the CL, and that has become a slight problem: Claudia doesn’t want to give it back. Then again, I’m solving the problem by getting an SL2, so I’ll be OK. Claudia generally doesn’t care about gear, but she won’t let go of the Panasonic LUMIX G9 for video, either. Unless you want to shoot 18mm almost 100% of the time - or want the smallest pocket profile OR want shallowest depth of field- I’d go with the 11-23. It’s an incredible lens (they ALL are, but even so) and while it’s slower than the 23, it is more versatile. The 11-23, 35/1.4 and 55-135, and you’re sorted for many years to come. That’s my take for personal street, landscape, travel AND portrait, though the 60/2.8 would be nice for portrait (and macro) too.

    I am really enjoying your videos, I own Q2 so... I wan´t more ! Don´t like M`s OVF system, came from the FF to APS-C and don´t want to go back to oversized and heavy cameras, so SL2(s) is not an option. After hearing your experience in street photography, I`m going for the CL as a way to use the gorgeous and excelent M lenses. My question is, if I can only afford buying one M lens, to complement the Q2, and am looking for the very best IQ, which would be your choice (s). Thanks for your videos.

    Hugh, would you still recommend the CL today? I'm going to wait to get a M11 until the stock market returns but need a light kit that works with M lenses I already own. Love the SL but it's too heavy for a daily walk around semi pocket kit. I keep coming back to the CL. Of course, wonder if Leica is coming out with a successor shortly.

      @@3BMEP I did get a CL with the 18mm and am totally in love. If i take anything from that xf 35mm video is to not invest in aps-c lenses. I already have a slew of leica m lenses including the 35 lux fle and plan to only get the 23mm summicron tl. This is all to hold out for the m11 for a few years. I sold my A7RIV and lenses to get the cl. So enjoyment of the craft is far more important to me than the technical capabilities of the camera ( within reason ). I didnt enjoy Sony’s ergonomics at all and the CL is a breath of fresh air again and gets me motivated to carry my camera daily, shoot and be creative.
