A “hotshot” was a fairly common method of murder with Australian organised crime in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Often injecting someone with a highly pure or concentrated shot of opioids (usually heroin). This was often done to victims who needed to be killed but their disappearance or obvious murder would be detrimental, it was often used on witnesses mid way through trial. Used less so nowadays, organised crime in Australia still relies on higher corruption, but shootings, stabbings and Kidnappings are far more public.

OK Chrissie - some of us here are highly recommending TV mini-series called 'Killing Time' (2010-11); starring David Wenham. The story covered in Animal Kingdom with the killings and the Pettingill family are covered more thoroughly in this, but more as part of a broader story of a former disgraced, high-flying (& now deceased) lawyer Andrew Fraser. Another one a few of us seem to be recommending is 'Blue Murder' (1995); starring Richard Roxburgh as disgraced (& now deceased) former New South Wales Police Detective Roger Rogerson. Finally, I can't finish without also *highly* recommending (the first, in particular) Underbelly (2008) about the Melbourne Gangland Wars. Love your work!
It's refreshing to see a reactor reacting to a great movie that's underrated. Most reactors do the typical well known films. Films like this deserve much more recognition & should be more heavily promoted by film lovers. This is a fantastic film. No mediocrity. Top notch performances from the minor to supporting & leads. Brilliant soundtrack & cinematography. The aesthetic & atmosphere really takes you into the mood of dark & gritty underworld. An to the scene stealers showing immense character development. It has to go to Jacki Weaver & Ben Mendelsohn both gave me chills of discomfort & fear. Please keep up with other great underrated films.
@@ChosenOne1991 underated.....Hmmm 🤔 no way man really not another underated comment Lol with respect off course, I see it differently it was everywhere I remember, after the premiere at the Sundance film festival in January 2010 it was then released 5 months later in cinema all over Aus grossing 5 million in box office sales, Ben Mendelson won an ACCTA for best leading role aswel as Edgerton for best supporting role, not to mention Jackie weaver getting an Oscar later on, after being released in the US were the movie was well received it was also then sold to a dozen other countries all over the world, critically acclaimed status with dozens of awards in many film categories including a 90% rotten tomatoes score this film was rated highly and hugely popular at the time, it's possibly one of Australia's best films ever made 👍
@@metalheadsmurf2835 I wholeheartedly understand what your saying. But that's for mainly people who are true film buffs & actually attend film festivals. An keep up with cinema. Yes. Like Godfather or Gladiator. If it wasn't underrated more people would have been reacting to this. Or it would be talked about much more. When you think top gangsters films. Her powerful depiction of the family matriarch in this film by Jackie Weaver won her the role of the mother in Silver Linings Playbook opposite De Diro, Bradley Cooper & Jennifer Lawrence. In addition Ben Mendelshon is one of the best actors on the planet. He was mesmerizing as the tortured son & brother in Bloodlines. This is a fantastic Aussie film. So many fantastic performances.
Ben Mendelsohn is one of my favorite actors, he's also excellent in ''The Place Beyond the Pines'', ''Starred Up'' and ''Killing Them Softly'' by director Andrew Dominik (''Chopper'' & ''The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford''). You also need to watch David Michôd's ''The Rover'' with Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson, Scoot McNairy ánd Nash Edgerton.
Whoa there buddy, speaking for a whole country are we heheh . I know him from Place Beyond the Pines, Black Sea, & Killing Them Softly, to name a few. No idea what Bloodline is
Not sure why the TV series was canned by some. As an Aussie, I loved the movie but also enjoyed the series, which features some good actors (Ellen Barkin and Shawn Hatosy). I'd personally give the series a try and see what you think, but maybe give it some time after watching the movie.
The barking dogs-bug in the house scene comes from the true events where Jedd Houghton (alleged Walsh Street gunman) picked up dogs barking outside his caravan on a scanner. The cops blew him away also.
28:10 - The term "hot shot" in the context of the animal kingdom typically refers to carfentanil, a powerful synthetic opioid used primarily as a tranquilizer for large animals such as elephants and horses. Carfentanil is extremely potent, approximately 100 times stronger than fentanyl and about 10,000 times more potent than morphine. It is not approved for human use due to its high toxicity and the severe risks it poses, even in minute quantities
Is that the case for his girlfriend too? Yes, her decisions were absolutely ridiculous, but she’s an overly emotional and angsty teenager whose family is worlds away from the reality of her bf - she was probably just going through a rebellious phase that would likely peter out as she got older. She also hasn’t had enough exposure to have a well developed radar for threats - she trusted her bf, so she thought she’d be immune from whatever was going on with his family. She was also being self destructive - the equivalent of kids who harm themselves or start drinking to actualise their inner turmoil. It’s sadly very common I think if she’d had better social supports she would probably have grown out of it given time
You have to watch the director David michods movie he made after this called the rover it stars Guy Pierce and Robert Pattinson it’s set in a mad max 1 type of world
A certain section of Melbourne cops in the late 80s early 90s had a reputation as being judge, jury and executioner. Not exactly corrupt but happy to break the law themselves to get the job done. Chopper used to say they'd be offended if someone tried to bribe them but think of stitching up a career criminal with false testimony or shooting one as part of their job. Sydney and Queensland cops had a pretty poor reputation for corruption. There was one Sydney detective "Roger Rogerson" who is worth looking into.
Watching your channel over the last year. Snowtown (2011) is another great (extremely sad, based on Australian crime lore) film thats is similar to Chopper but goes slightly harder. If you can find Snowtown somewhere to watch online i would give it a shot.

Joel Edgerton is one of my favorite actors. I love your channel and your analysis Chrissie. You did a great job on the "Warrior" movie. Which is one of my favorite movies. 😁
I love the slow reveal of the crime family being a matriarchy instead of a patriarchy. As far as Aussie crime films go, "Animal Kingdom" and "Chopper" are top tier.
If you like those. Check out Getting Square. It's kinda like a Aussie Guy Ritchie film. Crime comedy. Brilliantly hilarious performance by David Wenham. Also the TV shows Underbelly first season & Mr. Inbetween.
It’s a great film. The ending caught me completely off guard. The unspoken family “dynamic” was brilliantly done. Jackie Weaver’s role as the unofficial “matriarch” is fantastic. It’s great how he spends the entire film attempting to resist “the life” only to rise to the top of the heap by his own hand. There’s also a weird atmosphere that surrounds the entire movie. But in my humble opinion Ben Mendelson’s Pope got off lightly.
Omg one of my favourite films ever! I've been saving your stuff for when I get home, but it's gonna be a couple more months and I can't wait that long for this one! Based on true events yes.
I don't know who told you that the American TV series was bad, but I gotta disagree. I eagerly looked forward to each new episode. It's very different from the film, but since I didn't see the film before watching the series, that wasn't an issue for me. I'd rank it in my top 20 favorite series of all time.
Am so glad your doing like this Aussie movie react thing i went through a similar stage in my life where i watched nothing but aussie shows some i cant find any more too classic movies that you've finally seen, not even my brother who has seen like chinese movies nobody else will see that i've shown him hes never seen like the castle movie or warriors, glad he atleast watched original mad max when we was younger but am so ashamed he didn't learn the Bonny Dune song way back then when we were kids xD, I remember watching chopper with him and after i think i watched this film that i vaguely remember but i remember it being good at 3am from what i watched of it and ofcourse every person loves Ben Mendelsohn and the attention he brings back too like aussie movies and culture so im really thankful for that
You might like The Stranger. It has Joel Edgerton in it however it's pretty dark though. It's about a kidnapping that took place in my hometown, pretty terrifying stuff. It's a slow burn but a great movie.
Yeah, as some others have already said, its loosely based on the Pettingill family here in Melbourne, headed by matriarch Kath Pettingill (Jacki Weaver), and i think Pope (Ben Mendelsohn) is a combination of Dennis Allen and Victor Pearce. Dennis Allen was nicknamed "Mr. Death" for obvious reasons, he wasn't a very good human being, but i'm pretty sure he was already dead by the time of the Walsh St. murders... i might be wrong about that, though. He wasn't shot like Pope was at the end of the movie either, he died of some liver thing or some kind of cancer, but Victor Pearce was shot and killed in an execution-style hit in his car. The movie was somewhat accurate, but real life was a much, much darker story. As for the TV show, im not sure who told you it was dog poo, it's actually a pretty good and solid series. I wouldn't go saying it's "Breaking Bad" level of greatness, but it's certainly not trash either. It's not like the movie, nowhere near as dark, which i think was it's greatest fault, and after S1 it pretty much turns into a "heist series", but that's still not too bad cause it's got really great characters, storyline and acting... certainly well worth the watch. Plus, the series finale is, to me, one of the best i've seen. I just really woulda loved a series like this done is Australia and been a lot darker, a lot more along the lines of the real-life story.
I love your channel Chrissie and I especially love your taste in movies and TV. This movie has been a favourite of mine for years now, it’s one I will keep coming back to re-watch, which very rarely happens with me these days. As dark as this movie is, the cast are just amazing and every one of them did a stellar job here! You should look into Ben Mendelsohn some more, he’s been in so many amazing TV shows and movies. Have a look at Bloodline, he’s absolutely brilliant in that!
So, it was a case of two for every one. Which I personally respect. 'Trigger Point' is a great documentary which outlines a certain heavy-handedness and the balancing act of crime and so called crime fighting.
If you're a reader I think you'd really appreciate Aus author Trent Dalton, particularly his debut novel - Boy Swallows Universe. It was recently adapted into a TV series that I haven't seen but I heard was decent. I would still always start with the book but otherwise could also be an interesting watch.
The real story is more horrifying than the movie. Dennis Allen (The guy shot in the head at the end. Not true) once shot someone and tasked the young fella and a friend to dismember the body with machetes. When they couldn't do it he came out with chainsaw and started the job himself. I say 'started' because it wasn't long before the chainsaw clogged up and he had to finish the job with a machete while the young ones watched. Can't be arsed typing for the next 2 hours covering all such horrific murders carried out by Dennis Allen.
Fantastic movie, and somewhat of a sleeper that crept under the radar for a lot of people! Another example would be Shot Caller (2017) starring among many others Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister you know) and Jon Bernthal. No spoilers obviously, all this is depicted in the first few minutes of the movie: Family man Nikolaj makes a mistake and winds up in California state prison where it's basically sink or swim. The prison time is shown in flashbacks while we follow current day Nikolaj after his release, struggling to complete one last deal he can't back out from.
Jackie Weaver does a brilliant job in a short US series with David Tennant called Gracepoint. It’s great, well worth watching. It is a US adaption of the first season of the BBC’s Broadchurch, which also starred David Tennant. However Broadchurch went for 3 seasons. Of the two, I think Broadchurch is better, but they were both fantastic. And David Tennant reprising the same role, but as an American in the second, wow, such a versatile actor. Btw, love your reactions.
Watch Killing Time if you like this, based on the same family and their lawyer that got them acquitted of murdering the police officers in Walsh Street. Unbelievable series!

Two other great Australian movies are Snowtown and Lantana.
The best Aussie crime movie! Also recommend The Square written by Joel Edgerton and directed by his brother Nash.
Also recommended Getting Square with SAm Worthington and David Whenham
Great film
This one has popped up a few times. I'll have to add it to my list!

I wholeheartedly understand what your saying. But that's for mainly people who are true film buffs & actually attend film festivals. An keep up with cinema. Yes. This movie was met with universal acclaim. An it was talked about non stop at the time. But as of right now. Most people don't know or haven't heard of this film. More people know the TV show then the film. Hence meaning it's very underrated. Most UA-cam reactors all react to the same shit. The much more well known glamorized films. Like Godfather or Gladiator. If it wasn't underrated more people would have been reacting to this. Or it would be talked about much more. When you think top gangsters films. This won't even come out on people's list. That's what I mean by its refreshing & joyful to see others enjoy lesser known or talked about films. There is a plethora of great films. An venturing out to finding new or old great ones is always an adventure. Instead of giving recognition to the same ones over & over. Yeah we get it you know Pulp Fiction, Rocky, Parasite. But what about Michael Clayton, Moonstruck, Mafia Inc, A Prophet, 29th Street, 2046, Assassination of Jesse James, Decision to Leave. Im just saying if your reacting & you claim to love films. Don't just promote the same formula. Introduce your audience to new shit. That's what film is all about. Give the lesser known directors an audience a format.
Ben Mendelsohn and Joel Edgerton are the guys you are thinking of. They are both in the (The King) which had Timothée Chalamet as the main actor. Ben Mendelsohn was also the Main bad guy in (Rouge One) in Starwars.
Great movie! Stoked you enjoyed it, some solid reactions Chrissie, i was having reactions from your reactions lol Ben Mendelson is my stand out favourite Aussie actor, hes brilliant, he does play an American in many recent films, maybe ready player one isn't the only movie you seen him in you must have seen killing them softly with brad pitt,he was in the place beyond the pines, land of steady habbits, but his best role imo was in the series Bloodline if you haven't seen that yet its such a great series 🔥😎✌️
Yeah loved this one!!
Haven't seen any of those... Now I can look forward to discovering more of his work!
@@chrissiereacts I think you would enjoy all the above titles featuring Ben, only about 20 minutes on screen in place beyond the Pines but memorable, so comedy/drama is your jam then check out the land of steady habits first 👍
Have a great day/night 🥰
The movie that launched Jackie Weaver into Hollywood after decades of movies in Australia , like Chopper did for Eric Bana only it was his first movie , life is strange

"Blue murder" the best n you don't even mention it,mind u it more mini series ie 2 parts but mr rentakill era
Ben Mendelssohn was in a movie called the year my voice broke.Australian movie
If you're looking for Austalian cinema, I'd recommend "Snowtown", "The Royal Hotel", "Baby Teeth"or even for an oldie, "The Club",
Her powerful depiction of the family matriarch in this film by Jackie Weaver won her the role of the mother in Silver Linings Playbook opposite De Diro, Bradley Cooper & Jennifer Lawrence. In addition Ben Mendelshon is one of the best actors on the planet. He was mesmerizing as the tortured son & brother in Bloodlines. This is a fantastic Aussie film. So many fantastic performances.
Ben Mendelhlson's French accent as Christian Dior is also very impressive
Ben Mendelsohn is one of my favorite actors, he's also excellent in ''The Place Beyond the Pines'', ''Starred Up'' and ''Killing Them Softly'' by director Andrew Dominik (''Chopper'' & ''The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford''). You also need to watch David Michôd's ''The Rover'' with Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson, Scoot McNairy ánd Nash Edgerton.
Guy Pierce is in a movie called The Rover. You will enjoy it.
Please watch more Ben Mendelsohn! One of the my favourite Aussie actors. He is known for playing dark but interesting characters.
Ben Mendelsohn became known to the US audience from his role in "Bloodline" which is definitely worth a look. (3 Seasons)
I loved Bloodline.
Also hoping you'll check out the tv series of the same name. Really don't think it gets enough attention.
The barking dogs-bug in the house scene comes from the true events where Jedd Houghton (alleged Walsh Street gunman) picked up dogs barking outside his caravan on a scanner. The cops blew him away also.
You might like another Aussie classic - Muriel’s Wedding starring Toni Collette and Dan Wyllie is also in it.
Just remember. Even though he’s tall, Josh is only 17 years old. Hence he does a lot of dumb stuff.
Of course. My raw unfiltered emotions in the moment are less forgiving but once I process the film after a full viewing I'm more rational ;)
It’s sadly very common
I think if she’d had better social supports she would probably have grown out of it given time
Ben Mendelssohn has done plenty of flicks one of my favourite one is The big steal ( comedy) one of his earlier one.
You have to watch the director David michods movie he made after this called the rover it stars Guy Pierce and Robert Pattinson it’s set in a mad max 1 type of world
The rover
The Proposition is a fantastic Aussie/UK film, set in the outback
As you seem to be loving Aussie film. Please check The Boys (1998) it's an intense watch but so impressive. Like this it is semi taken from reality.
The TV Series isn't dog shit at all it's very very good and worth watching.
Have you watched Snowtown yet? True story, and you will never be the same afterwards.
Not yet! I hear it's pretty hardcore...
@@chrissiereacts It is, I'm a 55 year old Aussie, and still shiver whenever I think of that crime, and especially that movie.
An old teacher's son plays the main kid...and his only real friend is an old buddy of ours. Radelaide! None degrees of separation!
“The Boys”
1998 film
Watch this one, it is truly unsettling
Loving your reviews, so insightful and entertaining
Thank you
A certain section of Melbourne cops in the late 80s early 90s had a reputation as being judge, jury and executioner.
I disagree with what you heard about the tv series, i loved it.
bro...OZ crime family turns rainbow surfing fudge packer....come on mate its the worst woke take on a propper crime story. tottaly unecaserry
Another fun fact.
This was directed by the guy who played the anger management councillor in Mr Inbetween. David Michôd.
Watching your channel over the last year. Snowtown (2011) is another great (extremely sad, based on Australian crime lore) film thats is similar to Chopper but goes slightly harder. If you can find Snowtown somewhere to watch online i would give it a shot.
For more great Aussie thrillers to watch, check out:
Walkabout, Picnic At Hanging Rock, The Proposition, Sweet Country, Wake In Fright, The Babadook, Snowtown, Rabbit Proof Fence, Ten Canoes, The Tracker
I recommended a ben Mendelsohn film awhile back - Idiot Box. I think you said it's on your list. If not it probably should be.
Yes! It's still on my very long list hahaha working my way through :)
Joel Edgerton is one of my favorite actors. I love your channel and your analysis Chrissie. You did a great job on the "Warrior" movie. Which is one of my favorite movies. 😁
Thank you!
It's been a minute! Nice to see you in the comments :) Are you traveling?
@@chrissiereacts nah I'm crook so been in hospital, now rehab, but I'll definitely be back and commenting as soon as I get home!
Officially Australian cos you got this..😊
I don't know who told you that the American TV series was bad, but I gotta disagree. I eagerly looked forward to each new episode. It's very different from the film, but since I didn't see the film before watching the series, that wasn't an issue for me. I'd rank it in my top 20 favorite series of all time.
There's an American adaptation series of this movie aswell its actually really good
Here we go Chrissie. Damn I love you woman.
Wow! Now you're getting into the nitty gritty. My home town.
I recommend reacting to Sting 2024, a fantastic little Aussie horror movie.
Another Aussie classic!
That's like The Departed.--- The Bulger Brothers were so much more twisted than anything the movie --- which was Korean, not Boston first and last.
Full of Aussie legends
Jackie Weaver does a brilliant job in a short US series with David Tennant called Gracepoint. It’s great, well worth watching. It is a US adaption of the first season of the BBC’s Broadchurch, which also starred David Tennant. However Broadchurch went for 3 seasons. Of the two, I think Broadchurch is better, but they were both fantastic. And David Tennant reprising the same role, but as an American in the second, wow, such a versatile actor. Btw, love your reactions.
He's amazing.
Great reaction!! You should do The Snowtown Murders next
Watch Killing Time if you like this, based on the same family and their lawyer that got them acquitted of murdering the police officers in Walsh Street. Unbelievable series!
Another entertaining reaction chrissie
Thank you! Loved this one :)
Check out Gallipoli and a young Mel Gibson! Also, Picnic at Hanging Rock!
Galipoli is on my Patreon :)
Haven't heard of the other one!
Have you watched Kenny? One of the most beloved/charming comedies from Downunder along with The Castle which you've reviewed.
Have you watched "The Proposition" Written by Nick Cave and stars Guy Pierce.. A gritty violent movie but a look into Australias history. Worth a watch.
All your movie selections are awesome

Best Australian movie IMO is 2006 movie "Candy" starring Heath Ledger you should definitely check that out amazing film
This is a fantastic film. I live in Northern Ireland, we dont get alot of Aussie tv but i got into Australian movies about 10 years ago, there are some outstanding films.
