I haven't found any other reactions to this movie (no idea why!) but if you enjoy crime films, this is a must watch. Bana's performance is absolutely phenomenal. As much as we all love Crocodile Dundee, I think this movie deserves more reactions!

To show the sterility of the prison and to contrast it with the world that Chopper encounters after leaving prison 16 years later, the production was split into two. The first part, filmed at the H Division of Pentridge Prison, one of the actual prisons that Chopper frequented, was as plain and sterile as could be and all the scenes in the second part, taking place in 1986, were overly coloured to achieve a paranoid and agoraphobic atmosphere called "visual overload" by the director Andrew Dominik. This was attained by lighting, choice of film stock used and colours chosen for set decoration. Part one of the production ran from 3 May until 26 May with part two continuing from 28 June until 21 July 2000. The month long break enabled Bana to put on the extra weight necessary to play the older Read.
I'm shocked it only took 6 weeks to put on that weight!

Once Were Warriors, a sad, true life account of some families in NZ.
Aussies were stunned by Bana's performance in this. He was only known to us as a goofy comedy guy.

The amount of emotions Eric displays during the pen stab scene is phenomenal, from psychotic rage to self loathing to sympathy to twisted blame shifting to comic disdain all in this short span of time.
👏 👏 👏 for me when he gets stabbed and he says he's alright and replies nah when asked if it hurts... the amount of emotion in his face just for those few seconds is so beautifully done

Chopper read is despised in criminal circles 😂 he was a snitch/Grass and that's out of his own mouth lol he made video's and photo's with the police all pally pally informing on anyone not just dealer's anyone in the criminal world he was the lowest of the low and in the film keithy george was right hundred percent spot on he bashed people to get a name and not in the criminal world but in the media eye that's why he jumped in front of the camera as young man locked up for that news report he was wannabe celebrity

I’m one of the extras playing a reporter outside the court after he “beat the murder”. It was a great film to be a tiny part of. Andrew Dominik did a fabulous job writing and directing and Eric Bana was a revelation as an actor. They were both great to watch working and very kind to us all; still one of my best memories on a set. Andrew Dominik’s other films are definitely worth watching also. Thanks for showcasing this film.

My memory of Chopper is when I was working overnights in a service station in 2005. About 2am the bell chimes for someone wanting to be let into the store. It was Chopper & Mark Jackson. They were in the middle of their tour and had been at a nearby pub. They were the nicest blokes, spent about an hour chatting to me about everything and nothing over a couple of coffees, joking with others that would come through.
Ended up paying with a hundred dollar note for about $15 worth of purchases and told me the change was mine for being a funny fucker.
As they were leaving he asked me if I wanted some advice. When I said "sure", he just said "never plead guilty" and laughed as he walked out, giving us a wave through the window as they walked to the hotel next door.
One of life's great characters and I'm so grateful I had that experience with them.

"Neville Bartos does not exist, he is a character based on various people from Chopper's past, particularly Sidney Collins who was a biker club president that Chopper had shot for trying to extort him. Chopper actually murdered Sidney Collins after this film was released while he was on a speaking/stand-up comedy tour.

But yeh after seeing him in multiple real life interviews and things it seems as long as you don't cross him or act like a total dick he can be a pretty decent person.

Chopper was an infamous criminal here in Australia and Eric Banas portrayal of him is incredible. Hollywood directors watched the movie and loved it so much that it opened up all sorts of doors for Eric Bana with his career
Brad Pitt got hold of the movie, thought it was one of the best movies and performances he’d ever seen. I think he had something to do with Eric going to Hollywood.

When most of us first saw this movie, we were just in shock. It was just a complete 180 from everything that we knew him from, which was a comedian. To see this blew a lot of minds, especially considering the character that he played.
I was a good friend of Mark's for the last 12 years of his life. Eric Bana did a great job. He even had his mannerisms perfected. I last saw him in hospital a few days before he died, and he was his normal self and in a great mood. He got out of bed and gave me a big hug and said "never plead guilty". haha, he wrote that on everything he signed for me too.
One day we were at the pub and there was a bloke there reading a motorcycle magazine called "Chopper". Mark asked the bloke if he could sign the magazine, so got a silver texta from the barman and signed it, then gave it to me. He'd signed the magazine "To Wayne. In friendship". I asked the bloke if he wanted his magazine back and he said "not now". haha, Mark was a clown. I miss him.

Mark chopper Read was an eccentric psychopath and very funny in his interviews. If you see his interviews he viewed himself as pest control taking out drug dealers.
Plus he collected their cash as a bonus.
Did you see the infamous Elle McFeast interview? Understandably, it seems to have been expunged from history.
Almost immediately after Chopper's release from prison, they put him in the green room waiting to be interviewed by Lisbeth Gorr playing her Elle McFeast character in the pilot episode. The green room had a refrigerator stocked with beer. An ex-con who hadn't had a drink in years sat in a room with a fridge full of beer. What could possibly go wrong?
Chopper walked on set (I think it was a live show), full of beer and proceeded to joke about some of the murders he committed and how he disposed of some of the bodies. Good prime time family viewing.

yeah. i saw it a few times in high school and then started thinking about it maybe 15 years later and it's one of a handful of "comfort movies" at this point that i can watch to stabilize my mood
I've never seen someone react to this. It's one of my favorite films and the reason I'll always advocate for Eric Bana. One of the best trailers ever to sell me on a film. Did not expect it to be as funny or brutal as it is.
Your reaction is great. I met Chopper & he said that he & Bana hung out for a few weeks so he could get a good idea of Choppers character. He nailed it I reckon.
The DVD has footage of them hanging out. I remember Chopper having a whinge about how long it's taking to come out, and that The Castle was done and out so much quicker.
I never seen this movie, but I knew Bana from Troy, etc.. when I saw this, randomly on tv.. I could not believe it. I even knew right away that Chooper MUST be a real person, cus there was something in Bana's performance that simply wasn't HIS, it couldn't be 'made'. Later, with net u find out more, ofc.. but Outstanding performance. He was an actual different, real person. This is 99% how real Chooper is.
I grew up in Tasmania, I met Chop a couple of times when I was younger. He had no fear about his choices, no matter what those choices were. He was always so casual about everything, and a child like curiosity about the repercussions. This biopic depicts he so well.
Finally someone reacts to this hugely underrated movie! Eric Bana completely embodied the very charismatic and psychotic Mark "Chopper" Read. One of my all time favourite films. Great to see you thought highly of it.

Eric Bana was mostly known as a comedian on TV comedy skit shows like "Fast Forward". Then he did 'Chopper', his next movie gig was 'Blackhawk Down'. His career took off after Chopper. He is certainly a damn fine actor.
Another heavy one is ONCE WE'RE WARRIORS a New Zealand movie,chopper was a very emotional movie and your reaction was so real, lovefromaus❤️
I used to live in Collingwood, Chopper's home town. I walked past him on the street a bunch of times in the later years of his life. He was usually on his way to the Leinster Arms Hotel, or a local pawn shop where he was mates with the owner. He certainly had an aura about him; the kind of guy you wouldn't mess with.
Frank did too. Heard he pitched a guy through a window for taking his favourite Elvis tune off the jukebox.

One of the best films based on a true story. He portrayed Chopper perfectly. He actually spent a lot of time with Chopper to understand his inner person and mannerisms. True character acting at it's best. you have to watch the Australian 60 Minutes interview with the real chopper to understand how well Eric played him.

This movie came out in 2000. While I was backpacking the East coast of Australia in 2009, some Aussie mates introduced me to it and I became a fan instantly. I actually emailed Chopper and his wife responded to me as I felt like absolutely nobody from the US had ever heard of this movie let alone the fact that it was based on a real guy. I've shared this movie with countless friends and anytime I meet someone from AU, I always mention Chopper to see what they know about him or if they ever crossed paths with the real guy. He wrote several books and actually went on tour doing borderline stand up routines, got into art and painted. I think I heard he wrote some childrens books. In the end, died a few years ago of "natural" causes.
Liver cancer, actually. Fairly natural.
I remember the children’s book, it was titled ‘Hooky the Cripple’
I met a close friend to Mark, he sent me a poster on which Mark wrote, You cannot choose your battlefield, God will do that for you but you can fly your flag where no flag has ever flew. Never plead guilty. The poster is framed and hangs near the entrance way to my home in Long Island, NY.
i love this movie so much and none of my friends have ever seen it so it was downright therapeutic to see you react to it and not think it sucked

I'm subscribing because you're the only person who has reacted to this amazing movie. The guy who directed this (Andrew Dominik) also directed The assassination of jesse james by the coward Robert Ford. It's another amazing movie almost nobody has reacted to, and Brad Pitt says it's his favourite role. I'd love to see you react to that one too.
That is another one of the most underrated of all time. So good.
This is set in Melbourne, but I grew up in Sydney, and it was very similar. Gangsters were all stupid violent knuckleheads, but the violence was always between them, not the normies, they didn't want heat from the cops.
Mark "Chopper" Read was made as a cut snake. Eric Banna portrayed him very well.
Eric Bana started on a show in Australia called Full Frontal. I think his first movies appearance was the castle.
Dan Wyllie is outstanding in this. Such an under rated actor. He nailed the role of Bluey.

Eric spent alot of time with chopper researching his Charachter and stories. It's also a throwback to brilliant Australian cinema. This movie is a cult classic and even the man himself was proud of the movie!
This movie is more about what its like to deal with Chopper. His famous saying 'Never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn' is a variation of Mark Twain's saying to the same effect. Chopper is the definition of an unreliable narrator. How much of it happened, how much was embellished, how much of it was total bullshit? We will never know. Its awesome you checked this out. There's another Aussie classic called 'Two Hands' starring a young Heath Ledger and Rose Byrne. THAT is an absolute must see! Great reaction mate! Love seeing someone outside of Australia watching this let alone reacting to is. Its an Aussie classic and the dark underbelly indi house films like Romper Stomper staring Russell Crowe have been a constant in film history for the country.
Eric Bana is so different in "The Castle" and its very different Aussie humor.

I met the real Mark Chopper Read, he was at Vodafone in Brisbane buying a prepaid phone. Got a photo with him too. Even as an older man, he had an intimidating presence and no ears, literally.
Chopper was Eric Bana's best performance to date. He spent about 6-9 months hanging out with Chopper to get his story and mannerisms to perfection. He did such a brilliant job. This is one of our favorite movies in Australia, especially living in Melbourne. We would see Chopper out and about at gigs and comedy shows. He rapped on one of our Aussie Hip Hop Records. He was definitely a nutta but was really normal and nice when out and about. People still quote lines from the movie to this day. I also did some research after, watching interviews with Chopper and it's beyond comprehension how "right" Eric got it. Chopper did an interview with 60 minutes just before or while he was dying and he had no regrets about his decisions and was proud that he only got caught for one murder, if i recall. I can't figure him out either and I am in Mental Health... his nonchalant attitude and lack of remorse is so bizarre, even at the brink of death. Surprising people love him in Melbourne, he was a character indeed and quite funny. Go figure 🤔
Not to difficult to get. Especially considering his youth. Anti social personality disorder combined with narcistic tendencies. A term people throw around way to easily these days. But he clearly developed coping mechanisms that weren't healthy due to not feeling save. Instrumental violence and a lack of concern about anyone but himself would point to massive problems with emotional attachment.
Bana's acting was excellent in this movie. I remember watching this movie when it came out. I felt like it was an awakening to the real world that many people never see. I recall thinking, what kind of upbringing did Chopper have, to make him so violent and/or psychotic. I had a fairly violent childhood, seeing first hand the malevolence that people could manifest...and act out...especially from those who are supposed to love you. I have the scars to prove it.
The thing that perplexed me, was that I did not become a career criminal, though I knew many. I also did not get involved in drugs. The question rolling around in my head was why? I was big and intimidating. I could take a lot of abuse without having it affect me. So why didn't I turn out the way Chopper did? If anything, it confirmed that there was someone, or something, watching out for me. I could have gone down a very different path...quite easily.
Yes...this movie was very powerful. I thank God I did not turn out like this.
He was in a couple of episodes of All saints around the time Chopper came out...talk about a like for like character...Brilliant actor early on in his career..

I straight up couldn't believe how well Bana played this part. Even to this day I'm still stunned by how well he did. The dude was born to play Chopper Read.
The real chopper was a frightening psycho (had his own ears cut off) but he had a horrific childhood. He was a terrifying criminal and died from liver cancer back in 2013. Bana started off in comedy and had a very successful comedy show before this. He transformed himself incredibly for this role (Bana was a skinny thin guy before this. He put on 25-30 Kilograms for this role and was scarily believable for this role. Should have got an Oscar for this performance.
He was in one of my fave movies before this called "The castle" I highly recommend it
I moved to Western Australia back in 2003 and started working in mining towns. You would be surprised how many Chopper Reid characters there are all over the country.
I met a huge guy called John who had spent a total of 30yrs in jail for robbing banks with a shotgun. He had an old photo album with newspaper cut-outs of his heists and photos of himself wearing a long grey trench coat whilst in jail. He was completely insane but always treated me well.

One of the greatest Australian films of all time! Chopper Reed never admitted to some of the horrible things but you can tell in his commentary of the film that there was truth in the dramatisation.

Eric Bana is a great actor, I really like him in Troy, as Hector. No one else was better to play as that character.
Bana is an increadible actor. The Dry is one of his other great films if you haven't seen that.
Aussie movies tend to have a level of autheticity that isn't replicatied elsewhere. Maybe sincerity rather than authenticity. Some other amazing Aussie films are These Final Hours, which is about the last few hours before the world is engulfed by flames from a meteorite hit; Gallipoli, which stars Mel Gibson and is about the Australian landing at Gallipoli and will make you cry; and Rabbit Proof Fence, which will also make you cry and is about our stolen generation, and Last Cab to Darwin which is about an old man who goes on a trip across Australia to commit assisted suicide, which will surprisingly is less sad than both Gallipoli and Rabbit Proof Fence.
He is also great in Spielberg's "Munich".
Choppers Dad was a World War 2 veteran who suffered heavily from PTSD. Apparently Choppers father slept with his 303 rifle under his bed..
This is one of my favourite movies. I've watched it many times. Loved your reaction. I think Chopper one of the best portrayals of that intriguing enigma, the sympathetic psychopath.
Just like Sopranos, Goodfellas, Peaky Blinders and so on.
If you think about it, these are despicable criminals who commit horrific acts of violence, yet somehow, we still root for them.
Even though he's nuts. The film has the same way of locking you in. Like it mirrors his untamed, charismatic nature. Bloody good book too 👍

A lot of this was filmed around where i worked in WEST Melbourne it was fascinating I met the real chopper a few times
He was a animal lover , hated cruelty to animals , once he found out a person cut the legs off a cat , he hunted them down and made them feel the same pain !
This is by far the greatest Australian movie of all time.

Australia punches well above its weight for good movies: Picnic at Hanging Rock, Mad Max 1 & 2, Rabbit-Proof Fence, The Castle, Muriel's Wedding, Storm Boy, Babyteeth, Strictly Ballroom, The Dish, Walkabout, Shine, Gallipoli, The Tracker, The Interview, Breaker Morant, Dead Calm, Careful he might hear you, WAKE IN FRIGHT(!!). This is just what I can quickly come up with, there is SO much good stuff.

🇦🇺 Having grown up and lived most of my 50 odd years in Melbourne, Australia, apart from Bana putting in a wonderful performance the story of Chopper Read is one of almost folk law here that will probably remain that way after his recent and well documented death from liver cancer. No doubt he was mentally disturbed and when you look at his father it kind of makes sense as although personality disorders can be there from day one, for me they are often a manifestation of a child’s upbringing when their core values are cemented before they become teens. The true claim to the murders he committed will go with him to his grave, but one thing is for sure, Mark “Chopper” Brandon Read became a celebrity in a strange way and almost comical way but I agree with you, Bana’s performance here was outstanding and he actually spent time with Read in Tasmania prior to the filming where he lived a secluded life in the end to try and understand his almost mystic persona which no one will every fully understand, but hey, that’s what makes his tale so compelling. This was my first time watching your reactions and look forward to seeing a few more. Well done 👍 😎

You channel was in my feed. Your video was brilliant. As an Australian 🇦🇺 Yes Chopper, they broke the criminal mould. Nature and Nurture at play. When both in place this is the result. His distress after hurting or killing someone, you see this in a lot of family violence. The accused used to us as a defence “provocation”. As an avowed disco pig, the way they shoot that speed scene is such a pragmatic approach to conveying the frenetic/off kilter nature of liaising whilst off chops.
When my grandfather died when I was 13 my father and uncle went to their old local pub in Collingwood bloke sitting at the bar hugged both my dad and uncle and told me to call him uncle chop. Eric Banner had his own comedy skit show made in Melbourne, late eighties, that's when I became aware of him.

Ryan's death was a very divisive moment, not just for Victoria /Melbourne but the whole country, and the death penalty was abolished.
We do now have never to be released laws, becoming more common since mass shootings became a problem.
So never to be released laws were placed on some criminals that did their crimes before the laws were toughened.
Back then, we still believed in rehabilitation.
Today prisons are privatised, and we are becoming more like the US in every way shape and form.
Banner spent a bit of time with Mark Chopper Read before the film was made. If you've seen any interviews with uncle chop chop, you'll know Eric's work was spot on!

Don't know if you saw it but on the DVD there is footage of Chopper and Eric Bana together - they spent a lot of time together so that Eric could learn his mannerisms. It shows also how slim Eric was before making the film and therefore what an insane body transformation he went through for the role.
By the way, this is by far the best Chopper reaction vid I have seen to date. You don't talk too much but what you do say is thoughtful and observant. You got my sub for this! Thanks for the upload :)

An ex Sharpie skinhead. You could sit and listen to his stories all day let alone Marks. But it was certainly a very cruel reality back then in suburbia, specially commission areas. My mums also from the area Mark grew up in.

I first found your channel from the This is England react and since then been dipping in and out of to see what else you're watching. So far everyone of them recommended are all movies I loved and hold in regard and I'm loving seeing you enjoy them. It got me thinking, as I watched how some scenes (Usually the cruel and violent) upset you, cinema truly can be an excellent way to explore the human condition and it can be upsetting but it really is a way of examining the darker side through Fantasy, which in turn can help us to understand the reality. (lol bit of a ramble but it's what came to mind 😆) I have a recommendation, Peter Jackson's "Brain Dead". A dark, gory, offensive, outrageous and completely hilarious horror movie.
I went to the premiere to this movie. They guy who plays the large prison guard is a friend of mine, Greg Pitt, an awesome guy, who actually ad libbed most of his lines. Later I went to the premiere of The Dry, my daughter had a small role in the movie, I also had a scene, but it was cut :( Although my name still appears in the credits. I sat down with Eric and ate breakfast with him, he is as genuine in real life as he is on the screen, just a down to earth warm hearted guy. Love your reaction.
Eric was a comedian before this - no one saw his career going where it went. But it did - he made it happen and remained a really decent human being to boot. You have to see his movie about his love affair with his XB Falcon (same series of car as the black car in Mad Max), Love The Beast - but it's actually about friendship.
Chopper was a real person - gangster . .and yes, a psycho.
The filmmakers asked Chopper who he thought should play him on screen. When he said Eric Bana they were a bit unsure because he wasn't really an actor he was a TV comedian. It was an astonishing performance in his first film role. Basically Chopper launched Eric's stellar acting career.
Chopper Reed was indeed a real person and a disgusting piece of crap however he never hurt children. Eric did an amazing job playing him.

I always wanted to watch this again but I couldn't. I am happy I watched it again like this.

There's a bunch of the real life interviews with him that are maybe more outrageous than the movie. He played Russian roulette with the 60mins interviewer. She was not comfortable with the idea but it still happened. I highly recommend you check it out, very easy to find.
Ps, great post it is a great movie and half of the legend is you never really know what's true or not. Chopper did have a massive reputation for lying but he was so funny everyone just let it slide😂
I watched this for the first time a few days ago, and man by the end you absolutely forget its eric bana
"This is not a biography" was added for 2 reasons. Firstly, Chopper was known to tell a tale or 2, and secondly, he was still alive and didnt want to get into more trouble about the bits that were true.
BTW, this movie came out before his final murder (or at least he claims) in 2002.
