The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Being a Man in the Sewing and Quilting World

  • Hello Shiny Crafty People and welcome back to the channel!
Today I'm gonna talk about my experience being a man in the sewing and quilting world!
It's been mostly good, but I do share a bad story and one that's actually quite ugly, but luckily those were pretty far in the past and I don't think they are as likely to happen in a more enlightened world.
Since my audience is typically 90% female, I thought you might be interested in what I've experienced and how I've benefited by being an outlier in a female-dominated world.
As I say in the video, I have been so blessed by being around so many smart and kind women in my sewing journey. I make these videos each week because the sewing and quilting world is something special to my heart and I appreciate all of the great connections. I hope you enjoy this video and, until next time, STAY CRAFTY!!
    Bye for now.

I was also the only girl in auto shop in high school. My father wouldn’t let me get my drivers license without taking it. He didn’t want me needing to rely on anyone else “a guy” to help me out if stuck somewhere. I really felt proud of myself when I passed the class.

When I was in HJr. and Senior Hi, Girls were not allowed to take shop. I am not sorry for what I learned in home ec. But I would have liked to take shop too. I learened how to rebuild cylinders for brakes (before disc breaks) change a tire fast, and lots of other car stuff. I also was my father's firat born sun so I did shop work with him.

When I was a kid, My Mom only hand sewed to fix, but my father made ties. He wore them to work and sold some to boot. His Mother and sister sewed. Ironically, my mom desperately wanting a nap in late pregnancy, handed me (a four yr old) a threaded needle, fabric and scissors. She said make something for my doll and I was off to the races. In jr. high, sewing in the home economics room at the high school with my dad sewing ties at another machine was Special. Dad was the man in the fabric store and took me as I couldn't rid a bicycle that far. I didn't think it unusual. My four boys and a daughter all know how to work the machines and have one of their own. Yes, I understand I'm an enabler!. Even my only son-in-law got his own Embroidery machine from me. He took to it like a duck to water the first time. My grandchildren get cranky when the don't get their turns making something. I hope they always want to sew and create to make the world a happier more enjoyable place and that they can continue to pass the needle on to their families. Bravo to your grandma and mom for sharing a very valuable asset and skill with you. As to the trolls of the world, keep ignoring them. They have an opinion, but why should we be bothered. Sew on!

I started teaching Home Ec in 1974. We did everything to get “ guys” in our classes and encouraged “gals” into the ag mechanics and construction classes. We did projects together across departments including repair & decorating of a donated water damaged mobile home. Valuable lessons all around!!

My husband grew up in an upholstery business ran by his father. He can sew and upholster anything! He started making potholders a couple of years ago, he was horrified at the cost of those loops so I taught him how to single stitch crochet and he crocheted his own loops then wove them! They are beautiful! He has a great eye for colors.
One of our four sons, while in high school, took Home Economics ( sewing class) he absolutely loved it and made several little items that to this day he still has. Then he would run across campus to football practice. He is the one in his family that sews on the buttons and hems the pants and general repair, bigger problems come to me.
I as a woman can do many things with thread and yarn but I am also good with a band saw. Talent doesn’t know gender!
Love your channel ❤ and hey I am also 65! I’m in the groove.

My mother’s mother (born in 1888) made everything for her rural household (curtains, rugs, quilts, etc.) except for jeans for the men. My mother refused to learn how to sew, preferring to be outside with the horses. So when I, a daughter, came along, she could not or would not pick up a needle and thread (she was a great mother, nonetheless! 🩷). So my dad, a very creative man, fixed every hem, button, etc. for our family. One time I wanted my initials sewn onto my gym suit, and he lovingly tackled that task. So I praise all the men who are man enough to sew, quilt, craft, etc.! Love you, Tim!

I guess these people who would belittle anyone flr being in this industry have forgotten about the art of Tayloring! Men in Europe are apprenticed to sew to create beautiful clothing for mens suits and womens fine clothing. Its considered an honored position. Looking for local seamstresses and taylors in my area is not easy and is necessary. I appreciate the work you do and appreciate the taylors/seamstresses and sewers in general here on UA-cam who help me not to botch up a sewing job that I need to do. Thank you for sharing your gift on YT with us. You were a Godsend during covid.

I want to see a photo of you in a Star Trek costume. A friend of mine was telling me that her daughter years ago was going to have her 6th grade photos taken. She laid out the outfit for the photos in the morning before leaving for work. Weeks later, the photo envelope showed up in the mail and here, her daughter decided at the last minute to wear a Star Trek costume and twisted her hair into Leia’s side hair buns, with very little hair. That photo will go down in family history and your costume will as well. Bravo to the brave creators!!!

yes, I'm in the demographic group female, more than 65 years old. I understand you being one of few men who quilt. I learned to sew as a child. By the time I got to my freshman year, I was done the Home Ec. I told my guidance counselor I wanted to take shop. He told me girls take Home Ec, boys take shop. I told him it shouldn't take 6 weeks to make a simple blouse or dress. He placed me in metal shop. First girl ever got A's. Keep making your great videos!

My husband's mother made sure that he knew the basics of sewing when he went into the Navy and then to Vietnam. While on ship he made extra money heming trousers and pressing creases into sailer's uniforms. His sexuality was never questioned for doing this but others were amazed by his ability and he was actually crowned King of the Fleet at one time...we have photos. He had always been involved in mountain man activities in Washington State before we met, in fact that's how we met because I was involved in Revolutionary re-enactments after he moved to NC. Keep doing what you're doing and be proud of what you're doing. God Bless!🦅😇👍

I sent my kids for sewing lessons. My boys didnt want their friends to know...peer pressure. The boys enjoyed it but did not keep it up. But they have the option. My daughter took shop. She made a amazing coffee table. She kept up sewing but not shop. But she learned skills. She was teased for her choice. Historically men did sew and other hand crafts. My dad was taught in the 1930's and 40's hand sewing while a patient in the hospital. Men did hand work as therapy after and during WW1. We put the constraints on people. I hope we can support people and be be better people.

I’ve never thought about sewing being “woman’s work” because my older sister got the sewing gene in my family while I REPEATEDLY failed miserably at it-- by high school I was lucky just to be able to sew a button on by hand. 🤦‍♀️ Then as a theater major in college (some decades ago), there were several guys who designed and drafted patterns, sewed, and constructed wardrobe and costumes for productions. They also quilted and sewed a lot of their own personal clothing--and even knitted. They knew more about fabric and sewing and tailoring than anyone I’ve met since and made my much-dreaded rotation in the costuming department a LOT easier and much more fun than I could have imagined. I was more than impressed because they had me cutting and sewing--actually sewing period costumes on a REAL sewing machine!!!🙀--and even had me cutting out and sewing and constructing bustles and hats for one production. They NEVER patronized me or made me feel like sewing was something I SHOULD be able to do just because I was a female, nor did I feel that sewing was something they SHOULDN’T be doing just because they were males. They were simply talented people who just happened to be males--males who could sew rings around any woman!!! I learned SO much from them--and not just about sewing!!!
[One of the guys was the youngest Mardi Gras costume designer in NOLA--he had been doing it since high school--and he was in charge of designing and making costumes for the captain, king, queen, and court as well as designing and supervising the construction of riders’ costumes for one of the oldest parading krewes. (Of course this was back in the day when costumes were all locally made.)]
I think your UA-cam channel is helping to eliminate a lot of the “bad and the ugly” stereotyping just by being out here-- showing your talents and your skills AND your confidence in those talents and skills demonstrates that sewing and quilting are NOT gender-specific. (Unfortunately there are still some Neanderthals out there whose tin foil hats are WAY too tight!!! 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️)
Anyway, I LOVE your channel and I enjoy learning from you. I’m not a quilter--I can’t cut or sew accurately enough and I just don’t have the patience for all those little pieces of mis-matched fabrics 😂--and I basically sew simple craft items and tote bags--nothing complicated like period costumes with bustles or hats!!! 😂
THANKS for your channel!!! You ARE appreciated!!!

In 1976 I was a Sr. in high school. I asked my best male friend to go to the prom with me, he was only a sophomore. I said I was going to make my prom dress, a very conservative long dress and he said he wanted to go to the fabric store with me! It was fun getting someone else's opinion on what color and type of fabric would look good with the pattern. I doubt any other guy in 1976 would have done that.

I’m new to your channel and I find it very refreshing to watch sewing videos done by a man. I’m really diggin’ it. There are tons of women’s sewing channels, but so few men. I had aunt who worked in a sewing factory and once told me that when sewing needed to be done in her house, she didn’t do it, my uncle did. He would do any of the mending and also make any clothing that was needed for their children. I thought that was the best. He learned to sew while he was in the Navy. It was just a part of who he was and he did well, just like you. Enjoy your success 😊.

Hey! That's how I started sewing! In high school I was really into Logan's Run, and I wanted to make a Sandman costume....I got hold of an actor who was in LR (as an "extra" who was running his own fan club/merchadise thing) and he advised me on dimensions, construction, materials etc on the uniform, went to a fabric store and as I was wandering around, one of the ladies there asked if I needed help...she brought to the fabric I needed, and I bought it! My mom taught me how to use her machine (she used to make clothes for us kids back then) and it was a great experience! I got back into sewing about 2000 (the year) because my daughter wanted a "Little House" dress for herself in order to learn how to sew...long story short I've been sewing off and on for the past 24ish years now, including making my own clothes after I transitioned (MtF). This hobby has brought some real joy into my life, then and now!
Thank you for making these videos, lots of really cool things in them, subscribed!

Hi, I an old guy who has been sewing for over 46 years. I was never really concerned what people thought about me sewing way back then. However I find I get more comment these days. My standard comment is 'have you heard of Savile Row, it's full of men sewing'. My best store experience was when I went to buy a pattern and the women in shop as, why I wanted it. I explained I need it to make a block for my daughter's wedding dress. They were very happy as I purchased several hundred dollars of fabric.

My dad's mom taught ALL her sons how to sew, cook, & do all the "traditional" women's chores...
In the Navy, WWII, dad earned extra "pocket" money tailoring the other guys uniforms... they were made as a one size should fit all.
He also ended up doing the cooking for the "officer's" mess as he could make it taste good.
When he married mom, he had to teach her to cook as neither she or her mother could cook. My mom had spent a good part of her life in hospital at that point & outside of a few weeks BEFORE they married had never, ever lived by herself, until dad died in 1983 & I moved out in 1993... She had an extremely hard time adapting to that & she really never learned to cook.

I love a man's perspective on sewing, because no matter what you say it is different, and this adds spice and creativity to the craft. I love watching you, Tim. I have learned different ways to do things, and my favorite is the oil canvas bag...I am looking for an oil to do one with. Thank you for your contribution and the fun you add to the craft.

The problem I have with male sewers and quilters, is this: I've been quilting for 30 years, working to improve my skills. I keep seeing these guys who have been sewing for a year, winning prizes for their "art" quilts. One of these things is not like the other. I feel men get a huge break and tons of praise but don't have to put the work in. Your situation is obviously different. But if i see one more piece of floof on the wall with some thread work, I'm gonna bust. Make a block and don't lose the corners. Then we'll talk about stereotypes.

Tim, I recently found your site and I think you are awesome. I am 83, quite active in all things sewing n farming. My family lives in Sarasota however I “worked for the man” for 45 years and now retired have a farm in Missouri. We never slow down. This world is quite ugly, in all aspects now and I refuse to add to it. If I saw you in a store I would ask your opinion on colors. I do the same in my hometown which is comprised of many Amish farms. Some Amish won’t talk to Englishers however if I have a question or concern I have no problem talking. Consequently my husband n I are well known in our area and have many friends. There is a group of us that get together on Thursday night, we cook dinner, sew, laugh n cry together. We are a good support group of English n Mennonite and they have had my back for years. I will tell them about your UA-cam site and I’m sure they will enjoy as much as I.
    Love you and keep posting
    Joy

I am a man at 58 years old, Afro-American, living in Germany plus I need to use a wheelchair to get around because of my handicap.😂 owners of fabric stores or quilt shops are still amazed when I tell them exactly what I am there for to shop. They are even more baffled, when I am in to purchasing a new sewing machine. Having worked in a sewing machine shop for some time, I know how to use and operate a sewing machine. Sometimes I can even explain the machine better to them than they want to show me how it works. ❤😂😂😂❤

My husband is also a quilter. He started quilting about 3 years ago and his skills are quite good. When we are in a quilt store he gets a lot of attention when others hear him talking about what fabric would be good for a quilt. Most of the women tell him that they wish their husbands would take up quilting so they could share the interest.

It was my late father (an engineer) , who taught me how to sew on a vintage machine with a foot rocker.
He helped my grandmother with her sewing, when her eyesight, due to diabetes, started to wane.
To me, personally, I never care, what gender a person claims to be, when that person has the skills, I'll haunt the knowledge 😉
Btw, my father always had a better "eye" (feeling?) for material and colors then my late mother, who was better with scrutinizing sewing patterns for fashion (in particular changing the optics from a pattern to stay modern).
    Take care - Europe🌷

why do people question why a man would be sewing? Most tailors are men, I think it's good for a man to know how to sew so he can replace a button if necessary or to hem his own pants, as well. As a grandmother, I have helped my grandson sew, too. I love to watch your channel because you explain things in a straightforward way without using a bunch of terms that I have no idea what they mean. Thanks, Timothy. ❤

The hair salon story is funny, because my mom and I went to a salon owned and operated by a man whose son I went to school with. And the owner did our hair. This was 50+ yrs ago in TN. The other stylists were women. My dad would take me to the barbershop with him, occasionally, to get my hair cut, too, by his barber man. I liked the barbershop better because it smelled better than the salon(perms).

All the big designer labels are men. I started doing Hawaiian quilting in 1976 after doing patchwork. There were men already in the quilting world, teaching and creating frames that fit over your domestic sewing machine to make it easier to quilt. From 76 on more and more men are quilting. Welcome to the quilting world. It's so exciting to sleep under a blanket that you made. I'm also a potter and the first time I ate from a bowl I made from dirt (more or less), wow! I.completely understand feeling uncomfortable in a store. I am an 83 year old woman who has always done the tasks around the house that required hand tools. I have been completely ignored in stores and even dismissed with a “no we don’t have any of those”. Then turning around 10 minutes later and going in the back and finding the item for my husband. Yes I made a scene and we did NOT buy the item. I’ve even been completely ignored when trying to buy a car. Thankfully things have changed since then.

Tim, I really enjoyed this video! I’ve been with you from the beginning during Covid, watching your mask videos. As someone else said, you were a godsend!
I’m intrigued by the stereotypes you’ve encountered, as I encounter similar assumptions. I’ve been sewing since I was a teenager. I’m now a retired attorney, living on the coast not too far from you. Professional women apparently aren’t supposed to do something as “domestic” as sewing😂. On the other hand, my father taught me to build, repair, and create things, often with power tools. That’s something I do to this day. I have an assortment of power tools that most men envy! I’m not as nice as you are, so when I’m in the local hardware store, looking for something like oxalic acid (the most recent example), and the salesman tries to get me to buy something else, I will let him know he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Politely…I’m Southern too but I don’t tolerate sexist bs well.
I wish the stereotypical assumptions about proper gender roles and activities would just die.
On a positive note, I just ordered my first Liberty cotton lawn fabric, and we have a new Harbor Freight in my little town. Both are exciting🎉🎉🎉

Odd maybe, but part of it can be stores where there are regulars and I’ve just discovered it. They can be a little unfriendly. Maybe it’s because you’re new, maybe it’s because you’re of a different socio-economic or age group than they usually serve. People have assumptions in all sorts of areas.
