- Hello Shiny Crafty People and welcome back to the channel!
Tim Totten here and today I'm sharing a great first project that is also a simple but great jar opener!
You can make these in fun fabrics for everyone in your life. Don't we all need help opening jars sometimes? This easy jar gripper makes even the toughest jars simpler to open.
Here's what you need:
7" square of fabric
7" square of shelf liner / gripper fabric (I bought a roll at Dollar General for $5)
Thread
Sewing Machine
Cutting Tools
This video is 15+ minutes long because of the intro and outtro and all the talking in the middle, but I can usually make one of these in less than 6 minutes. And if you're making quite a few, you might make them even faster!
I hope you enjoy making some of these or even using this project to teach someone in your life how to sew. The techniques used in this project help with lots of other sewing challenges.
Until next time, stay crafty!!!
A quick easy addition... add a magnet inside 1 corner and stitch across the corner so the magnet won't travel. Then it's always handy on the fridge! A thin sheet of tissue paper will keep the grippy from sticking to your machine.
Great idea!
So smart! Now I wish I had included that idea!!
Looks like a fun, as well as decorative, project! Thank you, Tim.
What a great idea! I love the Hulk material. It's perfect for this. You always have such great project ideas and your instructions are easy to follow. I'm so glad I found your channel. Thank you🙂
So simple but useful.
I am totally shocked, never thought to sew from right hand side, to open inside out... then go around and stop where you showed, for the 2-3 inch opening. That would save A LOT of time and thread. Thank you so much.
I really like this project
Just found your channel with Easter bunny tutorial. Looking forward to following your tutorials. I agree that large patterns look much better centered on the fabric. This is an easy but great project.
Have a great day!
yes me too! will attempt the bunnies for my family, so cute! love this!
I came back to this video for your suggestions. I am going to add a loop so I can hang this on the side of my refrigerator. My fear is that my husband may grab it and think it is a potholder. Good tutorial. Thank you.
That’s a good point.
thanks for explaining this, Tim. Would make a great housewarming gift for new homeowners with handmade cloth napkins and oven tea towels♥ we new sewers need more beginner projects in the future.
Cushioned material is easier on arthritic hands!
Very good point!
Now I won't have to bang the handle of my dinner knives. 🍽️ on the lid to break the seal anymore 😅
Wonderful project
Love this quick and easy gift. I was just sewing one and thought...why not add a hanging tab so I can keep it in plain sight in my kitchen. Otherwise it will get lost in the junk drawer!
Such a great idea!! If I ever start making short videos for UA-cam and TikTok I will add that into a short tutorial of this item. Thanks!!
Just saw this a year later. I would never have thought of this idea. Thank you so much!
TMI for a beginner. Forget trying to get the emblem in the center, just show how to cut the sq.
That was an excellent tutorial. You’re a great educator. I like how you explained everything in detail. But in a way that was easy to understand. Happy to have found you 😊
Thanks!!
glad to see you back ! this is easy project to do will use my leftover mask material ..
have a great Day
Great idea!
Always looking for ways to use left over mask material. I had a lot of masks cut out when most people stopped wearing them! You can’t give those leftover masks away! Everyone is just sick of masks!😂
What a great little easy project. It reminds me of fabric coasters I make.
Which do you think will last longer when you have to wash them. The gripper with holes or like what you used.
I don’t know. If you make both and test, please let me know!
Thanks for a simple project for donating at. Christmas.❤
Great idea! I hope you have fun making and donating them.
This is a great project. I have a jar gripper, but to make one like you did in the video is just genius. I'm so going to make some for family members. Thank you again.
It’s a lovely way to personalize it. Have fun!
Excellent video. Thank you.
Thank You for a very informative project for me a beginner.. ❤
Great Idea!
Thanks for sharing
Nice quick project. I like your choice of gripper fabric and the fussy cutting to get a nice print or graphic on the opener.
Thanks! I like little projects like this because they’re quick but still challenge me to use good techniques.
Nice and easy. Thank you, tim!
I thought that i would take a batch to the senior centers thank you so much tim i love your channel
What a great idea! I’m glad you found a great place to donate some. I’m sure they will appreciate it a lot!
I use the gripper fabric sewn on a drying dish pad for my sewing machine as a pad. Cuts noise, doesn't slip when I'm sewing. Way cheaper than buying a sewing machine mat for sure!
That’s a great tip!
Can I have instructions
How can I make this I don't know how to sew or have a sewing machine
I hope Tim does not mind if I answer this question.
My great grandmother hand -sewed many quilts. You could buy pre-cut fabric squares from a fabric store, quilt shop, or Walmart. Also buy a needle for hand sewing and spool of thread. Thread the needle, tie a knot, and mimic a sewing machine by poking the needle in and out of both layers of material. Remember, one layer is cut from a shelf liner. Look up hand sewing tutorials on UA-cam to see how hand sewing is done. You may try to learn how to do the blanket stitch on UA-cam. I am not sure how to describe it. You could also try using a spray adhesive (glue) and skip the sewing. Good luck! 😊
How do I sew the top stitch. The rubber stuff will not go under/thru the presser foot?
You may need to use a teflon foot.
HULK open!!!
Great Video. TY
Thanks for the tutorial. I just use a piece of the one with the holes. But, they don't last. The ones with holes are great under lamps, microwaves, etc. I use a piece with holes under my foot peddle of my sewing machine. It keeps the peddle in place when I sew. I will have to make some of these. They will last longer for opening bottles and jars. I also put a strip of the ones with holes, between my fabric and my ruler. It keeps everything from moving when i use my rotary cutter.
Great idea of putting grippy fabric under food pedal of sewing machine!
