I really liked this video. I've been sewing for YEARS and have collected most of the tools discussed. But you had me at the zipper tool - I ordered a pair before you even finished talking about them! I buy bulk zipper coil and findings, so this simple tool will make using them SO much simpler! Thanks!!
I love this video! Just ran across your site for the first time. Your instructions/descriptions are clear & concise and you do not take up a lot of time with useless chatter! I use a long pipe cleaner to clean my sewing machine. My machine does not open up when I try to clean it like your’s does, so I bend the end so I can get behind machine parts, AND it is long enough to get deeper into the machine. I am 70 years old and my grandmother (a tailor) sewed all of my clothes, the quilt on my bed, and the Raggedy Ann & Andy that sat on my pillows. I spent many years watching and learning from her. I have her clapper. But in all of the years I have been around sewing you still showed me a few things that I’ve never seen before. Thank you so very much!
Love all the ideas! Thank you! I am a safety pin user for getting elastic or ribbon or whatever through channels. I guess my mom taught me to do it that way. ❤️
Before I bought my hit hemming tool, I used my homemade version. I took a manilla folder, cut it in widths from 1/4” to 5”, marked the size of each with a sharpie, then clipped them together with a binder clip. I could then hang the kit from an IKEA Skadis clip. The price is almost $0. Love your channel!
I have most of these. For the tube turner, I’ve seen people use a big straw and a chopstick but I like the set. The clapper is essential for creating creases in pants, etc. Finally, the bodkin is highly underrated. It can be used to pull heavy elastic like the one you have.
I'm glad you showed the actual Purple Thang, even if it was just the package. I always thought it was just a pointer with a square end and didn't know about the elastic turning slot.
I've been sewing for over 30 years as well, and know about and even have 5 of the products you list here except the zipper pull tool. The zipper pull jig is all I needed to see. What a fantastic tool. I'll use your link as I've never seen it in any shops I've been to or the one sewing trade show I attended... though to be fair that was years ago. Thanks!
Hair barrettes from Dollar Tree are good clips, too. Their craft clamps work well for heavy fabrics. If you take a few hand stitches in your cord or elastic, you can attach wide elastic to any of your bodkins and feed them through your casings. 😊 The Dritz metal hem ironing guide has curved edges. A bench scraper could snag fabric. I use my pattern piece for pockets to cut a guide from cardboard like a cereal box. I cut off the seam allowance and iron it, then attach to my garment. I store the template with the pattern. Just found your channel and will be back. Thanks!
I’m almost 73 years old & have been sewing since I was 8 through our local 4-H club. I just noticed that I have two of these turning items, but never kn what that small turner, & I have that “purple thing.” Love those cleaning brushes. I bought them within the last couple years. That zipper holder is awesomel. I really enjoy your videos Thank you. Please make a part 2.
The clapper is especially useful when pressing blocks. There can be multiple seams at one juncture, and that clapper will flatten the fabric. It has improved the flatness of my blocks.
Thank you for featuring all of those nifty tools. I use the clips already but not the turners and the items for getting through channels. I’ve visited your Amazon links and will order the tools tonight! I make dolls so the turners will be exceptionally helpful!! Have a good week!
Today years old when I realize that I have to have a hot ruler!! That is the ticket! I've heard of them, but have never seen a demonstration. Keep the tools coming, Tim! And I have also never seen a threader....Its going to be an expensive Amazon shop this morning!
With respect to the clapper, of clapping something on the bias and shooting it with steam, it can be important to allow the piece to dry completely before moving it very carefully. If the piece is moved while still damp, it can stretch considerably, and bias doesn’t like to return to its previous shape and size.
Thank you for explaining item number six. I bought those thinking it was for something else there was absolutely zero instructions. Now I can actually use it thank you
Majority of the those tools I have used household items I already have, ei, safety pins, premarked cardboard for hems, binder clips and large bobby pins, tea towel holder, etc. I did buy the tube turners but, I probably could have made those too. I try not to buy anything except fabrics, I even use reclaimed fabrics for sewing. These are all nice to use and have but, when sewing on a small amount of cash I need to save where l can.
I've been sewing since 19#6, and have multiple iterations of a-l-m-o-s-t everthing, BUT, I just love watching you go through your stuff! I almost wish I had a use for the zipper thingy though, cuz it's just neat. Thanks for being you💘
Thank you sew much! Love the zip thing never have enough fingers! Clips for binding without getting stabbed. Bobbin box was tempting but just bought the silicone ring. Yes please to #2❤❤👏👏
I really like the circle holder for the bobbins. I'm going to try the zipper thing and the tube turner. The clapper and the heat ruler I've had on my list for a while. Thank you so much for sharing 😀.
Hi Tim, I have just found you and I can say your video was great. The zipper jig looks very good. I have one but doesnt look as good as yours. I am in the UK. Yes please Part 2. Thank You...........
Thank you so much for this list! I do currently own some of the items listed, but was extremely excited to see the tube turner and the elastic threaders. I was able to find a set that had both on Amazon for just under $12.00 (as I already have the plastic turners and the bodkin.) you are always so helpful to those of us who have not been sewing as long as you. Keep up the good work!
You’re very welcome! I think we can always learn something new and my own favorite UA-camrs are people who show how to do things that might be common to others but are new to us.
I have every single item in your video, lol. Purple Thang: I stopped using mine when I discovered Sizzix weeding tweezers. These tweezers can do everything the Purple Thang can do plus more so I no longer even need to use some notions since this has so many uses (and they're under $10). These tweezers can be used as tweezers, the tips are thin enough they fit between the presser foot and fabric giving you the best fabric control possible, they can snap thread and be used to unpick seams, the tips can be used as an awl, and the handle end can be used as Hera marker. Zipper jig: I adhered the zipper jig (an adhesive towel holder) to a small ceramic tile - it's weighted down enough that it doesn't move around while I'm using it but small enough I can put it away when it's not needed. That means it's also portable and can be used where I want to use it. Just a heads up on the silicone brushes: The last time I used one the head got caught in the bobbin area and came off the handle, had to use tweezers to pull it out of the sewing machine.
@meacadwell, did you use the heat resistant ruler by any chance? What's your take on it? I just bought one and the edge warped on first use. Waste of money for me. I prefer thin piece of metal like a wide dough scraper. LOL Cheaper and comes with a handle.
@@incanada83 I've used a couple different ones. Some have lasted a good long time, the last one I got melted on the first use. I got a long metal icing spatula and now use that.
Great ideas.. love the tube turners…I want to tell u for quite a while, not only is Home Goods very good to shop for great items but I’m wondering did you know Harbor Freight is a terrific store also…for me especially. I find items so much less expensive… Love your videos. margy
The sewing clips are the best tool. I have the Clover Hot Press Ruler, which was a bit more than $10, but works great. I mounted the zipper jig tool to a ceramic coaster. I have better luck with a regular zipper jig, as I have more room to work. Thanks for sharing.
As always, great video, thanks! I just ordered the zipper tool, looks great. I had previously bought the Gypsy Quilter version of this item but saw on the packaging after purchase that it is not compatible with YKK zippers -- and I have a lot of YKK zippers. Hopefully, the one you demonstrated will work for that kind, but always nice to have a couple of options to chose from when doing any given project. One of my granddaughters loves different color combos, and I have seen on Pinterest where people take the teeth portion of a zipper with one color and combine it on the other side with a different color. So fun!
My sister suggested I watch this episode. Then we got into a discussion of storing pins due to both of us having cats. But I digress. I use pins but do not sew over them. At least not anymore. But, it never did work for that purpose. Thank you! Always informative and fun. Marion in Oregon 🏵
Hahaha! Thanks for the laugh this morning, Marion. I also used the safety pin trick for years and cursed every fifth or sixth time when the safety pin opened halfway through and stabbed me.
I have used a drawstring threader for years and love it! Bodkins are so much better than the safety pin method. That Purple Thang is a great tool too. I was given the knock off version and found it's not as good as the original. Thanks for sharing all the gadgets!
Hey, just a quick tip... I use a small dried beef jar to hold cone of thread upside down and a binder clip on the normal spool holder. Place jar behind machine and thread through the clip. Clip is on machines normal spool spindle, run thread through clip handles, thread machine normally from there.
For the zipper jig, I cut a piece of the bumpy rubber drawer liner that was a couple of inches wider all around the jig, and that keeps the jig from sliding around when I use it, and makes it portable.
Long ago, we had metal Dritz hem guides for ironing. Eventually the steam erased all of the paint markings and it was always super hot because the metal conducted the heat all over the ruler. I love the silicone hemming ironing rulers now.
Thank you! I was Matthew’s coach for his TEDx talk this year and I’m so glad you recognize the shirt! He’s an awesome guy. I’m so happy for his success.
During this time of the year , I pick up pencil boxes for 50 cents or a dollar, and use them for things like clips, and pins, cause they also are easy to stack.
The clips are nice for bulky items like bags. Sometimes if I want to be really accurate (or I'm serging), I put the pins to the left of the needle, so I don't have to keep stopping to take them out. I snagged a free set of those metal hem clips but didn't know how to use them (thanks for demo). There is a Dritz Ezy metal hem gauge that's about the size of a kitchen bench scraper (hmm, I wonder if I could use that instead?). That zipper jig looks really cool--how many times have I had a zipper come apart & I could not get it back together?!
Thank you! great ideas. I use the clips whenever possible because I always manage to stab myself with pins. they are also dangerous for my dog if I drop them on the floor! I have always heard the fabric tube you were pulling the ribbon or elastic through called a "casing" I really need a clapper!
I would have liked to see how you feed elastic on the purple stick as it was awkward to keep elastic intact or else break the piece holding it. (I realize you didn’t have it in hand at the time 😢). The last three were new to me and quite interesting, thank you! 👍
Those silicone Q-tip shape cleaners does seem like they pick up lint good but I would be concerned that the rubber tips would dry rot and end up falling off in the machine causing more problems to get out. That zipper tool is actually a tea towel holder and people are just using it as a zipper tool. That’s why so many come in a pack. I haven’t found them sold singly.
I really liked this video. I've been sewing for YEARS and have collected most of the tools discussed. But you had me at the zipper tool - I ordered a pair before you even finished talking about them! I buy bulk zipper coil and findings, so this simple tool will make using them SO much simpler! Thanks!!

I have had my clapper since the 70's, when I was doing garments. Works great on flatting seams too.

Timothy, this was soooo helpful. Those are the type of zippers I use for my over the shoulder body bags.

I’ll show it in use if I can ever find it. Lol
I use both pins and clips. Clips are great for leather, suede, vinyl. The word you was looking for is casing.
Oh a very good list! The number of times I really could have used the zipper thing I didn’t even know it was a thing
Good morning, Tim. Definitely need a few of your finds. Thank you ❤
Another great video,Tim! I've got a few things in my cart 😊 Thanks! ❤ (Part 2 - yes, please!)
I love sewing! More Tools the better
Good video. You showed how to use the items which is helpful especially for beginners. My purple thang broke, but I still use it.
Thanks Tim!! Yes please part 2!!! Enjoy your you & your channel.
I like my That Purple Thang. It works well as an embroidery laying tool. The little bend makes it more ergonomic.
I've been sewing for over 30 years as well, and know about and even have 5 of the products you list here except the zipper pull tool. The zipper pull jig is all I needed to see. That’s a wonderfully long time to be sewing! I will make sure I get a part 2 done in the next couple of weeks if possible.
You are a great salesman! I inherited everything on your list from my mom, except the zipper tool. Just bought it. Thanks for the links.
Awesome! Thank you! No need to buy anything new if you have them already. But if you do a lot of zippers this feels like a game changer!
The clapper is especially useful when pressing blocks. There can be multiple seams at one juncture, and that clapper will flatten the fabric. It has improved the flatness of my blocks.
Great point!!
Thank you for featuring all of those nifty tools. I use the clips already but not the turners and the items for getting through channels. I’ve visited your Amazon links and will order the tools tonight! I make dolls so the turners will be exceptionally helpful!! Have a good week!
So glad you mentioned the clipps. they are in my humble opinion is so inexpensive compaired to buying them at a sewing store.
I'm rather new to you. Thanks for your wonderful information!
You are so welcome!
I just found your channel and am very impressed with your finds and your clear instructions. Will continue to watch your videos. 🙂
Thanks!!
Oh my gosh! I have my grandmother's Hemming clips! They could be over 75 years old!
Today years old when I realize that I have to have a hot ruler!! That is the ticket! I've heard of them, but have never seen a demonstration. Keep the tools coming, Tim!

That makes so much sense.
True!! True, true
Very true, and it's why you should iron until almost completely dry, then apply the clapper to absorb the rest of the moisture.
I have most of these!
This was an amazing video !!! You showed several items that I have never seen !!! Thanks for the information!!!
Glad you enjoyed!
Thanks for the information.
Thank you for explaining item number six. I bought those thinking it was for something else there was absolutely zero instructions. Now I can actually use it thank you

zipper thing went on my list. I already have the purple thang. I love that.
TY for this video! I love each and every item.
You are so welcome!
All great products. Especially the zipper thing.
I was super impressed my it too!
That's a tea towel holder that he uses for the zippers. Super cheap.
Amazing and helpful. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Tim, Thank You again SO much !! Great ideas and I NEED several of these items..... Please do part 2 too.... :) hugs
Love these ideas. Thanks so much.

I use pins for most of my sewing but love clips when i am hand sewing binding on quilts.
Thank you so much. I bought the hot hem thingy.

Good demo thank you
Thanks ❤
You're welcome 😊
Thank you for this list. My daughter sews her own clothes. Some of these will be in this years holiday package.
You are so welcome!
I can see about 3 new sewing tools in my craft room. Thank you
This was very helpful. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Just ordered the #1 zipper tool. Thanks

I have been using a large safety pin to turn or to push through the channel in the fabric. Great tip for me was the Hot Hem Ruler
Thank you so much for sharing these tips and tools. Saves time and money for all. Can't wait for part two. 😊😊😊👍👍🙏🙏🙏😊
I cover my pressed seam or block with a magazine - has the same effect as a clapper and covers a larger area. Leave it in place to let it cool.
Great tools. Thanks so much Tim.
Very welcome
I have every single item in your video, lol.

Thanks Margy! I’ve been to Harbor Freight but not for sewing stuff. I’ll have to check it out again with my “sewing tools” glasses on. lol
Thanks great job i bought the heat ruler and the zipper pull thanks for all your great information
Great items. Some I wasn’t sure how to find. Now I do! Thanks❤❤
The sewing clips are the best tool. I have the Clover Hot Press Ruler, which was a bit more than $10, but works great. I mounted the zipper jig tool to a ceramic coaster. I have better luck with a regular zipper jig, as I have more room to work. Thanks for sharing.
I have an acrylic clapper. It’s clear and I can see the fabric and the steam working.
That’s so cool!
Nice batch of handy tools😊
As always, great video, thanks! I just ordered the zipper tool, looks great. I had previously bought the Gypsy Quilter version of this item but saw on the packaging after purchase that it is not compatible with YKK zippers -- and I have a lot of YKK zippers. That’s always fun! I bought a set of zippers with pulls in all different colors and I mix them up all the time now.
Wonderful advice, thank you 😊
I use to the round bobbin holder.
My sister suggested I watch this episode. Then we got into a discussion of storing pins due to both of us having cats. But I digress. I use pins but do not sew over them. At least not anymore. Hahaha! Thanks for the laugh this morning, Marion. I also used the safety pin trick for years and cursed every fifth or sixth time when the safety pin opened halfway through and stabbed me.
Thank you Tim. I always learn something new from you. I need that ruler to iron with. It would be so helpful. Have a great weekend ❤️❤️
I finally found a clapper at the quilt store yesterday and bought it for $29.99.
So smart!!
Great things and since I live in Europe I could purchase them tank you
Long ago, we had metal Dritz hem guides for ironing. Eventually the steam erased all of the paint markings and it was always super hot because the metal conducted the heat all over the ruler. I love the silicone hemming ironing rulers now.
Great t-shirt, I got the purple one. Love your video's.
Thank you! I was Matthew’s coach for his TEDx talk this year and I’m so glad you recognize the shirt! He’s an awesome guy. I’m so happy for his success.
Enjoying the replay ❤
So glad!
Great ideas. I had one of the turning tools but never used because I didn’t know how to
I’m glad this helped!
I ordered the ruler and the clapper through your links. It was a little bit tricky because my iPhone uses Safari but I managed to figure it out😂😂
So I received the clapper and the ruler today. The clapper is actually quite nice. The ruler a little bit flimsy, but it worked.
During this time of the year , I pick up pencil boxes for 50 cents or a dollar, and use them for things like clips, and pins, cause they also are easy to stack.
I use my hot hemmer ruler for paper piecing.
Hi from Australia - love some of these.
Glad you like them! Thanks for joining me!
The funny thing is I just bought that tube turner and I have most of the other things but the hot hem thing is a great idea
Goodmorning!
I can’t find my purple thang either! 😂
If I find mine, I’ll let you know where it was in case yours is hiding in the same place. Lol
The clips are nice for bulky items like bags. Sometimes if I want to be really accurate (or I'm serging), I put the pins to the left of the needle, so I don't have to keep stopping to take them out. I really need a clapper!
Enjoying your video….the tube turner looks like a straw and a chop stick.
Totally. In fact, I recorded a short video a month ago about using a chopstick and a boba straw for this very thing. Lol
I would have liked to see how you feed elastic on the purple stick as it was awkward to keep elastic intact or else break the piece holding it. (I realize you didn’t have it in hand at the time 😢).
The last three were new to me and quite interesting, thank you! 👍

I just found my purple Thang on the floor under my sewing table.
I’ll look there. Lol
To get the elastic to fit through the hole, cut the end of the elastic on the diagonal, then pull through.
Such a good tip! Thanks.
