  • I took a day trip to Wellington aboard the Capital Connection passenger train, with DFB 7023 up front. This service has recently been upgraded with more former British Rail Mk2 coaches to replace the previous 'S' class coaches, which were also Mk2s. Except these replacements have been refurbished (again) to the same standard as Te Huia's SR coaches.
Whilst in the capital, I saw more DFBs on the Wairarapa Line passenger services and DL 9325 on the Q4 shunt at Woburn. Of course, some of the Matangi EMUs appear in the video as well.
(Ngauranga station also features in Qazzy's video on New Zealand's strangest railway stations)

If I were an executive of kiwi rail I would have 4 capconn round trips in the morning and afternoon and extend it to Auckland and do the same treatment to all the lines on the north island and South Island

That is crazy to see MKII coaches like that all that way away!
Edit: this deserves way more views...

Great footage. Even though its a sign of how old fashioned and in need of investment the NZ railway network is, its still cool to see station pilots at work hauling out rakes of coaches.

I haven't been on the Capital Connection before, but I did see at Platform 8 while driving past Wellington Station. And DSC was a bit further I think.

Ive seen a couple of you videos and was wondering how you find all of the info you have about train numbers and such. I have had a google search and couldnt find anything. Is there any online database i could find or anything?

You could join the New Zealand Locomotives Facebook group, since that's a good place to find out the train numbers.

The fact that there is still no weekend service of the Capital Connection at the minimum is dumbfounding... Supposedly there will be more frequent service with the arrival of the new trainsets in the 2030s (if that doesn't get axed by the current government like everything else that could benefit everyone) but I'll believe it when I see it. So much wasted potential.
