Note for viewers that may be thinking that I’m speaking ill of city living.... of which I’m not. I’m simply giving my perspective as to the benefits I see related to the rural area in which I live🙂
In the video, I speak to specific things that I like about rural living, as well as things that aren’t so great about living in a rural area. And some of those things I consider to be an advantage versus a city/metro area. But some are a disadvantage to what might be a more favorable strength of a city/metro area. It doesn’t make one better than the other....just differently suited to people and the preferences they have.
Larger City/metropolitan areas have plenty of benefits as well. And just to scratch the surface.... they generally have greater economic/employment opportunities, convenient access to retail and dining establishments, parks and entertainment attractions, more social opportunities for younger folks, access to services, and too many more to list😀
But, as humans, we all have our preferences and I just tend to be a person who enjoys the rural life more. I like the space and the ability to do my own thing. And other folks will prefer larger population areas, and the benefits that they offer..... and believe it or not, that’s OKAY 😉👍.
Hope that made sense. Thanks for watching!
    Joe

ahmad Kalhor hi Ahmad, I don’t have any sketches or specific dimensions of the camper as I built it as I went. I have a general idea of what I wanted to make and just started building from there. But I did not draw up specific plans for it.
However, I do plan to do a video after I complete the trailer where I will talk about all the dimensions, weights, specifics of the trailer. But that won’t happen until I get the awning done and a couple more things. Probably next spring.

@@ahmadkalhor218 there are lots of UA-cam videos on teardrop campers through remodeling a delivery truck into a tiny house .. just figure out what you will use as your base/shell and figure out what YOU need to have to live in it and begin! I must admit, I miss the country life... terribly. I hide it from the family, but not my dog. She misses it too. I think I've realised how much of a private person I've become... or maybe I've become weird and introverted. I miss walking on my own soil where no neighbours can see me. I envy the time I didn't hear a neighbour mow the lawn religiously every weekend ... and the feeling that I should be doing the same. I miss finding things on my walks which I've never seen before and probably nobody else had either. I miss not having to be mindful of how much noise I or my kids make when we are outside. I miss taking a leak in open spaces (my son however is lucky enough not to care). I miss jumping fences. I want to lift the barbed wire up ever so carefully so my dog can get through. I miss looking under rocks with the kids for insects. I miss seeing sheep grazing from my window and walking them down to the creek whilst trying to teach my dog to herd and not block them. I miss working in the shearing shed. I want to come home from work, place my Rossi boots on and run up the hill to help Dad lift the hay onto the truck. I miss my wife telling me to take me filthy boots off in the house. I miss the smell of diesel from the tractor. I miss walking home late from the top paddock, lying down on the dusty track with the dog and watching the stars come out.
I hope this lost and imprisoned feeling goes away... and also the one of missed opportunity. The fact is we cannot afford to buy a piece of land on the farm. Although Dad wants us to be there, we want to do it on our own backs. Maybe that day will come if we keep saving right. I'm lucky that we are only a short drive from the farm. I find myself popping over there frequently after work, with the kids and dog. Leaving my neighbours behind with their seemingly endless domestic duties. We go see what 'Pa' is up to.

The feeling of being trapped in suburbia or the city never goes away from my personal experience.
You either like it or you don't.
I enjoy the food of living in southern Commiefornia, but the traffic, noise, nosey neighbors, dealing with the drug addicted homeless and not having enough space for future projects (classic cars with a touch of Brit Range Rovers) are pretty big negatives for myself not to mention I find myself to be lazier probably because I don't want to deal with the above issues in my local huge community.
I dream of smelling a hay field, I can smell the sweetness in my head as we speak... Waking up to look out the window to see various wildlife roaming my property, not hearing the garbage truck slamming dumpsters down.
You know what I think the worst is? It is having my drunken neighbor tell me about his "E.D." (in his defense he's a nice guy just really annoying with personal problems that I shouldn't know about) almost daily he tell me how he is going to become a stand up comedian and how everyone thinks he's funny even though he only has three tired jokes that I gave never heard anymore laugh at.
I miss having to get up before dawn or pulling an all nighter to get up and do the choirs that a small farm require. Knowing that the fields need mowing but the 60 year old tractor needs maintenance first, not to mention the family and community values you get from small town or rule country living... The plus side is I am hoping to get back to that lifestyle shortly.
My recommendation to you Is talk to the wife about what you miss, you never know she may want the same thing.
Where there is a will there is useally a way.

@J P. We know orange man bad, we have all heard it 1000 times... It is time to stop with the outdated term/name calling that has no relevance in American politics at least not currently. A fascist is a world war II term and needs to stay there in the history books it is an uneducated talking point that doesn't hold up with any small bit of investigation especially when referring to an elected political leader.
Here is the fact, Whether or not you like Donald Trump is irrelevant because he was/is the legally elected president of the United States, historically speaking we tend to have 8 years of one party then 8 of the other party with only a few exceptions to that historical rule, Obama had his 8 and was duly elected even though many conservatives disliked him, he was elected just like Trump in a process that guarantees state representation in an a federal election. Hence why we are a republic and not a democracy like political leaders like to claim we are it is literally in our constitution www.senate.gov/civics/constitution_item/constitution.htm
Fascism by definition means and I quote from the Oxford dictionary "a political system basled on a very powerful leader, state control, and being extremely proud of country and race, and in which political opposition is not allowed"
Now you could argue that the president is a powerful leader as are most world leaders and you could also argue that Trump is a nationalist and both of which I would not disagree with but to say he has total control just isn't true as if you would have actually paid attention in your HS civics (government) class, you would know the we have three branches of government and they are the executive, legislative and judicial branch all three branches have checks and balances for one another to make sure we do not end up with a dictator such as Mussolini who you could argue was a fascist dictator or in modern times the communist xi (I can't spell his name so I won't butcher it trying but the so called "president" of China). Our constitution has checks and balances to stop the rise of a dictator, perhaps you should possibly take a read at it, the founding fathers of our nation were scholars, lawyers, patriots and although they had some flaws in their personal characters as they were products of their times, no on can deny they were highly educated and qualified to write said documents and did an amazing job providing equal opportunity not guaranteeing equal outcome. The flaws in our "living document" that they may have left can be easily corrected with an act of congress using constitutional amendments to right the wrongs. One is freedom of speech which was a very early correction and for good reason. As an example if the "cancel culture" (full of real life fascists, racists and marxists in any combination of the three all bad and all are pushing for division). If tgey have their way we will loose our freedom of speech as soon as they deem it wrong think. Number two is the right to bear arms to stop a potential tyrannical (possibly fascist/marxist) government but I digress and number 2 protects all the others in the 27 list of amendments.
Now lets change the subject and go on to my comment about homeless.
Now you may like "heroin Bob" or his friends barking dog lady and skinny Pete digging through your trash for possibly recycle, credit card numbers, who knows but he and all his 130lb 5'10" friends all dig for something and it is an invasion of my privacy but I digress.... But my point is and I have a serious issue that he literally leaves feces on my tax payer paid sidewalk that me and my fellow tax payers use, those same sidewalks are never cleaned and his literal crap washes into the rivers and eventually the ocean spreading potential to seize along the way. I also have a real issue when I walk down the street and I find his dirty (possibly disease-ridden) needle in the gutter where my young children may step on it or even worse where they may play with it. I have a serious issue with typhus and other pathogens that were assumed to be lost with the dark ages popping up across the 1st world city I reside in.
You can argue about if I should be empathetic towards the plight of the homeless and that is fine but I have to deal with them on a first hand basis and a huge majority of them are drug addicts and there is no way to sugar coat it. Some with their brains metaphorically speaking fried like an egg from all the drug abuse. Some I am sure have legit issues and almost all probably need some form of help but to condone their actions as healthy for a functional society is not only naive but potentially dangerous to you and your family both physically and mentally, not to mention the housing values in a neighborhood that vastly depreciate when tent cities move on to the sidewalks around the surrounding neighborhood.
If you want to debate and try to sway my opinion your welcome to but Orange man bad isn't a talking point. Perhaps you should vote and take an active role in the political process. If you do perhaps you should convince others in your circle to do the same because I promise you, I will vote and always do and I vote against everything that raises my taxes, erodes my freedom, redistributes wealth and that doesn't follow a strict American first isolationist policy. I vote for the Blue collar American worker (of all colors) and vote against all immigration both legal and illegal.

That being said some states are more expensive then others and some states give better rates depending on how the property is used. California and Massachusetts are two big offenders on over taxation and states like Alabama and Utah are reasonably cheap.
(Democrat controlled states are always taxed heavily for those so called freebies and republican states are useally much cheaper cost wise).
I believe some states don't charge property taxes when you gave retired but I could be wrong.

As an example if your house is assessed at $100,000 (even though its market value is 250k) and you only get nailed a .65% tax that isn't to bad ($650- in that case) but if you get nailed with actual value and get charged 2% you're talking about $5000 bucks which I am pretty sure more then the services you are receiving.

Joe, I agree with you 100% of the pros and cons. Grew up in rural AZ in a mining town about 2 hours north of where you are. A few things. First that is one seriously big ocotillo!!! I don't think I've ever seen one that tall. Second, you better get after those tunas on the prickly pear and get some jam up. Lastly, Liberty. Yes, that. The freedom to do as you will for your own needs and desires without imposing or otherwise taking something away from others. There are a lot of people in your comments who want to move to a rural space for all the pros and despite the cons you list. And I say this to them, "Good for you. You are taking a giant step into self-determination and responsibility." But I would also say this, "Remember why you left your urban 'home'. Remember the restrictions that frustrated you. The mis-alignment of large city policy and rules with your own desire for freedom." So many times; and I have seen this countless times in my 64 years of living in AZ, people come to a rural part of AZ because they like the openness, space, and liberty Joe talks about. But, once they get here, they impose rules and restrictions so that pretty soon 1) no one else can enjoy that space or liberty, and 2) they impose restrictions as to how people can even acquire land. Don't California/New York my Arizona!

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  4 роки тому

Couldn’t agree more! That’s why I like to emphasize “living my life in the manner I choose, so long as I’m not affecting others”...,, and your comments about people moving from New York/California are very true. Many people who wish to flee from places like that forget the original reason they left. And in some cases start to try and change the area that they moved to. Great examples include Montana and Idaho....where small towns have been infiltrated by new residents from other places...And in time the new residents took over the town councils, mayorships, etc to transform the town into what they thought it ought to be. I’ve heard a few first hand accounts that verify these behaviors.
Now to be fair, I’m sure a lot of folks do remember why they left. But sadly many don’t, or don’t care...

I moved to my son and daughter in law's farm about 3 years ago. They built a giant shop and installed a small 600 square foot, fully handicapped accessable father in law apartment in it. For grandpa! I have grandkids and home cooking just steps away from my front door. I build projects in the shop that is on the other side of my back door. Woodworking tools, my welding machine and metal working tools, and all the other tools guys love to play with. We now have, along with the tools, which are all built on rolling cabinets, a complete set of adult games including a full sized shuffleboard, a foosball table, darts and a batting cage and pitching machine for use at any time. The big screen TV sits next to the Dall Bighorn sheep trophy ram full head mount. My son coaches the local high school football team, the Rams. Next to my shop/apartment is a beautiful woodlot with 2nd growth fir and madrona that is up to 32 inches diameter and over 70 feet tall. So squirrels, chipmunks, birds, racoons, deer, coyotes and rabbits are all my neighbors.
Today's project is we are brewing homemade beer in the shop. We snagged a complete set of supplies for home brewing, pots, bottles, hugs, propane tanks and burners, etc. Gotta go, the water is close to temp. Wish us luck!

I have lived in the country and the city.
Most country people don't care what you are doing in your yard.
City people tend to be very nosy.
City's tend to be very loud.
When i live in the country, i hear sirens maybe 2 times a year.
When i live in the city, i hear sirens every few minutes.
Traffic noise is all day and night long.
When i live in the country, its so quiet at night i can hear myself think.
In the country can have a garden and animals without anybody yelling to the government about it.
Can set in your yard by a camp fire out in the country without anybody calling on you.
BUT, life in the country is work, if you want to grow a garden and have a nice farm.

YES Joe, you & me both. I live rural & my neighbors are still to close to me.. lol... but even it's rural I have 2 subdivisions in around me. I dislike my closes neighbor as do the rest of the neighbors. She is a trouble maker. She makes my 76 yr old Mother
life he'll just by trying to block here driveway. She thinks my Mother has no right on that road even though it's been there for 35 yrs & the owners of that land gave my Mother the right away to her property over 35+ yrs.
Thank God my Mother had it deeded back when the other owners gave it to my grandfather for a $1.00.
It states that no gates or anything else can block that driveway. She put a fence all the way down my side of the driveway. I can't get to my back yard now. I can't get my camper out. Last spring we put a whole new septic tank system in our side yard. Over $6,000.00 worth. If we drive on it it will crush are ladderlines & I can't replace them. I don't have that much money living on disability. I asked the neighbor if I could put up a double gate & she said no way in hell she would let me. So I'm stuck in the back yard. I dislike neighbors.
Well they tried to block my mother's driveway & the police came out & told her she could not block my mother's driveway bc after 35+ yrs that driveway is my mother's. They will be going to court. Can't wait. Plus my Mother has cancer & UPS & the post OFFICE will not go thur gates to deliver her medications. Also fire trucks, ambulances, electric trucks can not make that turn @ the end of the driveway on to my mother's land. The right away states it must be 35 foot for things like that.
This neighbor is a thorn in the neighborhood. My husband & I would fix her car & lawnmower all the time. Her rooster got out one day & was trying to breed w/my chickens. When I saw this I shewed the rooster off my chicken. I caught the rooster & when all over the neighborhood trying to find out who's it was. It was hers, so I tilted her I shewed it off my chickens. She thought I said shot @ it. At the time I was renting my house from my Mother. She called my Mother & told her to tell me to keep my chickens off her land. I only let my chickens out one hour before sunset a day. OMG!
So my chickens hasn't been out of the cage since & that's been 4 yrs ago.
    Neighbors are evil!
I'm glad on the other side of my land there's a field & my stepfather owns it. Now to get rid of the other neighbor I will be so happy. My mother can stay behind my house bc she doesn't cause me grief...... lol....
In November my Mother gifted me my house & land. My grandfather built the house & THEY lived her for over 50 yrs. I'm so happy I got my grandparents house. My mother is one special person. And deserves piece in her late years.
So whoever reads this. Will you please pray for my Mother & this property is also in probate court. So PLEASE pray for the daughter, Lee, gets her late father's property. He has 4 other houses she can live in so it's not like she wouldn't have a place to live. We want Lee to win so my Mother can buy the driveway so nothing like this happens again.
So PLEASE pray for my Mother, Wilma, & for the daughter, Lee.
Thank you, sorry this was so long, but it's a long story,
    Chris from Missouri

I've been thinking about getting land out in Avra Valley and have really struggled in coming to terms with the various logistics, making money, maintaining friendships, and all the other tradeoffs. I really want the freedom and space to build what I want and do what I want. As far as critters, the whole web of life in the desert makes it the amazing place that it is, even the rattlesnakes. I mean that literally, it would not be what it is without every part of the ecosystem. Even though I have had the s*** scared out of me by rattlesnakes numerous times, I look at them with respect, and know that they don't want a confrontation any more than I do. The 'con' of it taking a long time to get mail (or run errands) exists in the city too. Driving across town can take an hour or more if there's traffic (although that has been really mitigated with all the stay at home orders)

@Homesteadonomics we moved from a city of 330,000, to a smaller city of 10,000-12,000. We are so close to rural living, and love to drive around finding the rural roads in our new state. Even at the population that we have, some of the mentioned issues apply.. Yet, they drive us further and further into wanting to move full blown rural.

Hi Joe, some questions for you: how do you manage with the child school and with earning money? The rural life is something beautiful but difficult at the same time. I'm dreaming it everyday but the main problems I deal with are school/sport/social relations for the child, and quitting job and reinventing a new one.
I know these are personal questions, so you're not forced to answer 😉

      Hi Alessandro,
Thanks for checking out the video. Regarding employment.... I work as a firefighter and commute to work in the nearest city to us. And our home schooling for our daughter is a combination of a homeschool group we are a part of, workbooks and projects that we work on with her, and mostly just letting her explore her interests and fostering that desire to learn. Most people actually comment to us that she is way more mature and speaks more articulately than most kids her age. But I might be biased😉
And for socialization. That is probably the most common thing we hear from folks asking about it. It’s really not a problem at all. We have neighbors, and cousins nearby that she plays with regularly. And we schedule play dates with her friends that go to traditional public school. It’s just a matter a making to effort to give her plenty of opportunities.
Hope that made sense and thanks for watching!
      Joe

Rural routes have a half mile rule for how far the delivery takes them from the road but you can talk to the folks at your office to see if building a secure box for the carrier to leave a package would work. I've delivered to many a creative alternative like horse troughs converted to secure water tite boxes for packages. I assume your mail box is a half mile or more from the road. A larger box or locker may help you.

Feels like you guys dealing with rattle snakes all move them off your properties. With our brown snakes here in Australia, taipans, red belly blacks, etc, we usually just leave them alone and keep our distance lol. Feels like playing with fire! Been a while since they were an every day issue for me, but we are moving back to the country as soon as we can, so it will be a consideration again! Great video!
