Trek Top Fuel 9.9 XX1 AXS // Bike Review

After reviewing a slew of big bikes this summer-each seemingly heftier and slower uphill than the last-it was refreshing to hop on the Trek Top Fuel, a spry 5-inch bike, and start enjoying climbs again. The Trek Top Fuel is a bike with cross-country origins now redesigned to cater to a more aggressive subset of riders. The revamped geometry makes for a longer package overall with a 480-millimeter reach in the low setting on a size large and a 435-millimeter chainstay. This new length, paired with a slightly slacker 66-degree headtube angle, gives the Top Fuel a surprisingly capable feeling at speed, even down steeper trails that the traditional cross-country bikes of yesteryear would balk at.
The Top Fuel is a case study in what’s possible for a bike that’s light on overall travel, but heavy on modern geometry and suspension technology. Enduro rigs keep getting chunkier and slower uphill and this polychromatic, peppy Trek seems to have arrived to show us just how capable a featherweight package can be. While I think the average beginner rider would be happier on a more forgiving, longer travel bike, experienced riders seeking a next-level degree of efficiency and precision should take a serious look at the Top Fuel line.

My favorite bike of 2021!
If anyone else is 5’10” the medium/large size is 👌, thank you Trek!
Wow.. slightly different category, but better than the Stumpy?
It depends on the dimensions of your body which size you take. I'm 5'10 and 3/4 inches tall, but have a 76 inch reach. Needed a size xl which fits great. Actually would even consider a longer stem.
@@mannyfnsc29 the stumpy is a great bike but I prefer a shorter travel bike for my local trails and riding style.
@@usamade5943 that’s quite the wing span you got. I tried the large and it felt a touch too long for me but that’s why you got to demo bikes, everyone is built differently.
JC Trails rocks!
I watch your video's not because of the review, I always watch it coz im amazed how good you ride while still giving us your thoughts on the bike. never seize to awe me. \m/
Best bike reviewer for sure! I have said it a couple of times but the way you deliver this content is awesome!
Thanks for the kind words 🙌 We are happy that you like the on-bike feedback and format.
+1. No question this is the gold standard of on-bike, seat of your pants MTB reviewing. 👍🏻
@@freehubmag where in the heck are these trails of yours?
Wow!
@@Jacob99174 We shoot these in Bellingham Washington
Looks who is finally doing bike reviews again!!!!
Love watching you ride and talk about bikes! 🚵🔥
Trek nailed the colour schemes the past few years. So good 👌
Thanks for the great review of this Top Fuel! You definitely make it look easy and fun!
Just got my 9.9 XX1 2021, and it's still actual, new model just got wirelles shifting. The best MTB
220 LBS? I thought this guy would be like 160 with the way he sends this stuff! Ha great review from a fellow 220 guy.
That trail is insane!
My 2023 9.9 arrives in two weeks..... soooo pumped
Happy NBD!!!
You just sold me on this bike. Thanks bro.
Nice color scheme 🙂
I love your review videos, and would love to see you do a review of Trek’s Remedy!
0:05 interesting how the logo on the tires is oriented that way so it's at the bottom when right-side up
Another amazing review! How does this bike feels compared to the Pivot trail 429?
Loving mine! This bike is sick!
Congrats
Great looking bike.......nice review!
Some wild trails!
Man. So glad I found this channel! The bike reviews are exceptional! Video is entertaining even w/o audio, but hearing the play by play opinion during the ride is awesome. BTW, Trek does make some nice kit, right? 🙂
Love what Trek did to the Top Fuel! They do need more than 1 carbon wheel option the Line Elites are too heavy for the Top Fuel at 1900g.
They need this treatment on the Fuel EX ASAP - 10mm more travel, little slacker, steeper seat tube, longer reach, 34.9 Seatpost and Float X rear shock.
You called it!
How does the Top Fuel compare to the Trail 429? Which one would you prefer to ride?
One piece bar/stems are another example of bike industry doing too much. But most people change the bar and stem anyways.
Sweet trails 🔥
Fun ride !!! I've had Treks, and still have a Trek XC Superfly FS 9.9 in my collection...... have enjoyed riding it, but it has been the most-expensive to maintain, from suspension bearings to remote lever issues for front and rear shock, to rear triangles (carbon), then full front and rear shock replacements. Maybe things have improved, but having had better luck with Spec'd and Scott, it would require some convincing to go back.
"Really interesting how this SID fork holds up..." yeah very interesting because like all of them have significant bushing play 😂
Could you review the new Transition Patrol please? I already bought a frame, but I have 1200usd left and I can't finish building my bike with them, so it would be so nice to watch a video from you reviewing it. I love your reviews!
Damn you good!!
Is it on the normal speed video player or faster. I am so amaize to see the short travel bike in such speed on slipery track
Really enjoy your reviews.
Off topic but wondering if you’ll be throwing a leg over the new Firebird?
Keep the great videos coming.
Should do a review on the Propain tyee.
How does this compare to the FUEL EX as far as riding experience. You seemed to really like both
Awesome Bike.
How does this compare to the new Stumpjumper with the flex stay as far as climbing, descending, and over all playfulness?
This Top Fuel is a lot lighter feeling and less cushy than the StumpJumper. It's a more precise XC feel.
Comparison to the following? Great riding btw!
Great review. Which did you prefer the evil following or the Trek?
The Following had a bit shorter feeling wheelbase. Both bikes are very cablable. I'd say this Trek was a bit better at high speed and the evil was more nimble - with a much more solid frame feel.
*Hey Spencer, when will we get to watch you review an **_Ibis Ripmo?_*
How would you compare this bike to the Scott Spark you just tested? Thanks
Man oh man, how does he ride like that.
How did you like this compared to the following? So much variety in the short rippers these days
How can a bicycle cost as much as a Ducati flagship bike panigale V4 1100cc 360kmh 230hp????
How would you compare this to the previous Fuel Ex that you reviewed?
I have dilemma between this one end stumpjumper.... btw, are you still in one piece? dammm :)))
Are you guys gonna review the Specialized Status 140mm and 160mm?
Yetisb130lr please
Can I ask what camera and settings you use? Your record quality and settings are perfect. I have a GoPro 5 with a chest strap that I'm trying to get set up. I think I'm on a linear setting which is one step up from Narrow. What I'm most impressed with is your image stabilization. I'd appreciate anything you can offer. Thanks
Hero 7 with karma gimbal on chest mount. 4K 24fps, Superview, low sharpness, and auto shutter for the woods.
What do you guys think the money is at, Trek Top fuel or Scott Spark?
How did get good at doing jumps and drops? I want to move from XC to trail riding but I’m always scared of riding trails like this.
What would you think the top fuel 8 2017 model be good for and how much differant is it from that?
Anyone know which fender guard he uses on his rock shox forks? I’m looking to put a larger guard on my lyrik but I can’t find anything that’s compatible that’s full - sized
Interesting … But what are the downsides or weaknesses of this particular bike? Thanks for the ride!
Excellent riding man. I could all but taste a mouthful of impending treebark and busted teeth just watching.
where are the trails you ride?? they look so sick!

@@freehubmag every time I see this place I am enthralled. It's literally #1 on my list.
Legit question for someone considering buying one: Why do you keep referring to the bike as "little bike?" You call it a little bike more than 10 times throughout the video. Does the sizing feel small, is the frame not adequate for the wheel base, why the "little bike" reference over and over again?
Little Bike is reference to the smaller travel category the bike is in
@@freehubmag Ah perfect thanks!
The ride was good but I dont like calling it a "little" bike. I know what you mean but it sounds condescending. Ahh look at that cute little bike. You gonna ride that little bike down that hill? Thats cute.
Okay I feel better now.
What is the reach?
What trail is this?
Did you had any issues with bushing play with the SID?
I didn’t notice anything, no. I was definitely hammering on it!
@@johnsospencer Yes Spencer… we can see that! 👀😂
For me watching the downhill part was rather scarry, I mus confess. I would never ride a bike so fast.
🙈
Something about Treks they just do not do it for me even in the slightest.
This Top Fuel and even the Slash are nice if you have longer inseam. For me a seat tube of 445mm is excessive. I prefer bikes with 390 to 400mm that fit a 180 to 210 dropper post.
@@pjsanab especially these days it is hard to justify the long seat tube
