Hey James, curious how this actually compares to the FUEL EX. This almost seems like a Fuel EX "lite" now that the geo is so close. I have a 2021 EX 9.9 which is the same as the 22 and all I can see between the two is a weight difference of 2lbs
Trek,at last, using threaded b/b's. Being in the UK with epic winter mud and generally awful weather, having a threaded b/b is a must. I have a 2018 fuel ex 8 which is a great bike but the pressfit b/b lasted a couple of (winter) months.
Simple my inquisitive friend, if it’s wet out take one of your other bikes or a current buddy’s bike and save on your beautiful bike for a nicer dry day. I’m sure he would love for you to experience what he already knows.
Guess you answered your on question there my MTB friend.on the serious side I have a Fuel EX and friend has a top Fuel. Top Fuel I a little more XC with smaller faster tires and wheels. Less travel front and rear however a super fast rolling bike you really don’t need to upgrade imo. Beautiful Trek paint and detail really makes it pop! Awesome bike!
I would love to see a breakdown on where all the weight is coming from. Is it the wheels and tires or the frame? 32lb bike with 120mm of travel is quite heavy. If it's just a more durable frame, I can live with that being a clyde myself. But I would want a race day set of wheels and tires for this thing.
Wow that ended up being heavy for a XC bike. my 2016 Fuel EX(which was 120mm/120mm) was 26 1/2 with pedals. Granted it was a 9.8 so it had a mostly carbon frame, but all that weight can't be in the frame alone.
Sadly this was a sold bike and therefore I didn't have the opportunity to ride it. Looking at the leverage curves and the setup, it should be a pretty snappy climber, trading off a little bit of Small bump compliance
I can get the top fuel 8 locally in January or the top 9.7 in March at a shop 45 minutes away. Do you think the value/performance of the carbon 9.7 model is worth the wait and drive time to get it serviced? Thanks
The Top fuel 8 is now heavier then a fuel ex 8 2021.I have the 2021 TF8 and very happy with it.I have 2 wheelsets 1 light with xc tires and one with wide trail tires.I can ride xc, Marathons and heavy trails.Happy with the fork now but can always upgrade with SID 35 120mm or Fox sc 34 120mm.I think Trek goes wrong with this 2022 model.Big gap between the supercaliber and the Top Fuel now.Maybe the new supercaliber will be more aggressiver.
I like the 9.7 carbon model with the Fox 34, I read you can upgrade the air shaft to a 130mm fork and that will slacken the head angle by half a degree to 65.5 😎
With down country bikes basically being previous gen trail bikes, not surprised at their choices. The remote lockout seems a little unnecessary, but I do wish it was a bit lighter. Having the frame storage on an aluminum frame no doubt increases the weight
why no remote lockout? if its like this, then there would be no difference when using a fuel ex when climbing. I still prefer using remote lockout since its still a downcountry bike
the pricing is so insane now.. i have a 2020 top fuel (carbon) xt bought in nov 2019.. the equiv model today is over $1600 CDN more! (and it weighs about 1.5lb more)..
You can think the shipping costs. I was recently part of a discussion where I found out that to get bikes off containers in a timely fashion is adding over $300 of cost just to shipping to get it done in a short period of time. These poor bike brands are paying a ton of money every step of the way just to bring the bikes over, and therefore we as customers are seeing higher prices
Just picked up,this same bike. One thing though, mine came with SRAM DB8 brakes instead of the Shimano 6100. Should I be concerned? This was from a Trek dealer store, not sure why the difference and if it is an upgrade or downgrade.

With the weight at 32lbs this is a trail bike more than a downcountry bike

Now that I think about it, my 2019 Full Stache, an aluminum framed 29+ 130mm/130mm bike is 32 lbs with pedals
James, does it have the mounting points for a bash guard/guide combo?
Isn’t there an option to get 130 mill front fork?
What is the weight of the 2022 EX? Would be an interesting comparison.
Where can you get those tires? Can’t find them online.
Good looking bike with the dark blue and chrome color. Makes me want one haha
How’s the ride? Does it bob? I dig the retro tan Kevlar colored tires.
Sadly this was a sold bike and therefore I didn't have the opportunity to ride it. Looking at the leverage curves and the setup, it should be a pretty snappy climber, trading off a little bit of Small bump compliance
I’d love to be able to find an xl 9.7 in stock
That would be sweet!
For real, how are you getting these bikes? These are just coming in now with limited availability here in Norcal
Very nice, great bike!
Nice! Does it have the tabs for a bash guard?
Yes
Trek has the internal frame storage on the slash aswell and it’s been there for a while
That's cool, I did know the Alloy slash had it. Neat
dork disc and reflectors make it look dope.
Needs handlebar tassels.

At 5'8.5" I'm smack in the middle of a M and M/L i think. Any suggestions on which way I should lean?

Unless you need the bike right now, the 9.7 will certainly be a nicer ride

I don't think they will make the super caliber any more aggressive. It's pretty well tuned to be a dialed race bike
Can the Sid fork be bumped out to 130mm?
I don't think so. I believe that the max travel on the set is 120 mm
@@Jamesthebikeguy Trek says that it is designed to take up to a 130mm.
Beautiful 😍😍😍😍
Agreed
Very well done video!
Is this meant to compete with Blur TR and Epic TR?
It's a bit more trail than that. Both of those bikes really fall into the more aggressive XC area
What size would anyone recommend for 5" 11" M/L or L?
Large.
It weighs more than the fuel ex?
Not compared to the comparable aluminum fuel EX 8
Will be over 32 lbs with pedals for a 120mm bike front and rear with a Sid fork. That’s a pig.

Yes, absolutely enjoyed it... so much so that you might just be seeing one of these regularly on the channel.
@@Jamesthebikeguy 😮😮😮😮

Weldings are not smooth though
No remote lockouts is a big miss in downcountry, also the weight is not really light!

Well that anti-squat numbers on this bike we'll make this pedal better than the Fuel EX.

Oh aluminum. Does not weld anywhere near as pretty as steel or titanium
reflectors tho😂
They have to put reflectors on to meet safety standards. Your choice to take off & easy to do. The bike shop will often give you the option.
still pretty conservative geo...my stumpy which is all out trail bike has steeper seat tube angle....and slacker head tube for that matter

Then you have a fuel EX
