I'm so grateful that Himaruya has created this character. He means so much to me and I'm just so proud of this city. The relationship among them three is so damn complicated and it's somehow a scar that we dun wanna touch on. Trust your heart Hong Kong ;'(
This is apparently a very old video but I'm commenting on it anyways. Hong Kong as a character, wouldn't have existed prior to England showing up and establishing the harbour. So, he wasn't around to spend time with China before. The people were just a part of China. Maybe it's kind of like how Canada/America weren't around until settlers came; personally I headcanon a Native America character being around before then.
That may be true for the actual Hong Kong in real life, but in the Hetalia canon, Hong Kong had existed as a mildly-tempered, long-haired boy before he was introduced to England.
Well, the way the creator of Hetalia put it.... England was cursed to have big eyebrows. And, this curse rubbed off on his colonies. Canada and America are the only ones spared.
China, HK and England ARE one big family. China can be the mommy and England be the daddy and HK be their son! 8D *Shot* But seriously, this was a wonderful slideshow! (And I love the pic at 1:40 !)
I think each character represents a nation (defined as a group of people with common values, beliefs, culture, descent, history ect inhabiting a particular country or territory) not a country (the physical borders) That is why we have so many Japanese prefectures, Taiwan (officially still a part of china although very different in beliefs), Hong Kong (differs in language) and Tibet (differing in culture.)
@SpanishBossBabe Hong Kong Island was ceded to Britain after the first Opium War, and then Kowloon peninsula (the "mainland" part of Hong Kong) was also given after the second. In 1898, China also agreed to lease the New Territories (area north of Kowloon) to Britain for 99 years. In the 1980s, as this lease was getting closer to its due date, the governments discussed it and decided ALL of Hong Kong would be returned, in 1997. ...I am a super nerd for my city's history...
The first picture (at 0:02) is so beautiful and true (in the sense that both countries have a great influence on Hong Kong). Does anyone know who draws that fanart? Who was the author?
I really wish I knew the story behind the whole England, China, Hong Kong thing. And I don't mean what Hetalia says, I'm talking about the actual history.
Autumn Grace What I know is some time after the Opium Wars England acquired Hong Kong from China. It was kind of funny for a minute that China had a fight with England over the importation of drugs. However, opium was so powerful that it basically made nearly the whole country higher than a kite for such a long period of time, China could barely get by. The best prime example would be a food shortage during this time frame as a result of opium. Due to this, China tried to get Queen Victoria to withdrew her opium merchants, yet she said no (she did this just to get more money, a chunk of opium sales are in China at this point in time).
Mallerie Coss Vargas Yep that’s basically what happened. To continue the story, after China lost the war, England demanded China to sign an unequal treaty, including 3 million dollars of indemnity, the permission to colonize the HK island, and other stuff. That’s the beginning of the British colonial rule in HongKong. The rule continued more than 150 years, and finally in 1997, after a series of negotiations between China and England (at first England really don’t want to give HK back), HK reunions with China. However, since the political system is different between China and HK, HK became a special administrative region, and have a 50 years break to stay capitalist. Sadly, due to the distortion of the western propaganda, a few HongKongnese, especially radical young people, hold negative view about China and had that idea of breaking up. Their action really don’t represent the view of the majority. Most people in HK want to stay with China, and that’s a clever choice. China is supporting HK with its electricity and water supplies, and HK companies and services rely heavily on China. After all these painful history, let’s all wish HK good luck.
The relation between England and Hong Kong is that Hong Kong was once under England's rule before China got him back. XD Thats what I've heard quite a few times, so sorry if I'm wrong.
I love this so much ;-; China is like the mommy and England is the daddy XD see Hong Kong was forced over to England after China lost the opium war. That is why Hong Kong has bushy eyebrows like England :D

I enjoy this AMV a lot...although I noticed it focused more on China than England. Still, it has a great song and good pacing. I like it!
