  • Today’s topic is cabinet doors or hatches. Small, big, rectangular, rounded, we have them all! and they are many!
we had already started working on them so that’s why they come in different stages. Some have been primed on the back side, some have been just sanded, many of them need spot filling and quite bit of work and attention. They all need to be fitted to the cutouts in the boat. So stay with us to follow our progress and learn about the hinges challenge!
The LATEST UPDATE is that you can see what Wilda looks like in REAL TIME and you can support us by joining our Patreon community! Thanks so much for even thinking about it! The link to PATREON is here:

Great job as usual! The highlight of the episode is when Rox, with some fear in her voice, talks about whether the doors need to be sanded or not. Really funny!
    Keep up the good work!

      🤣
Always a bit of a trembling voice when there is talk of more sanding to be done 🤣
      We both feel it!

Look at Blum hinges, they have lots of adjustable hidden hinge options that work with face frames.

It's hard to tell from a video but you guys sound much happier now even though you're still sanding and painting. Hinges for larger hatches and doors, piano hinges may be useful. They are fixed firmly and durable. In You Tube there is a video Duracell sailing: "Can You guess the part that everything hinges on?" EP84 where hinges are made by themselves from epoxy and carbon fiber. They attached the hinges with epoxy without screws. This method opens up the possibility of adaptations so that the function is both strong and well integrated.

Yes. Composite hinges would have been an option. Less so after already having painted though. Some sort of screw or bolt on option is what we are looking for. I guess we could make hinges that would work....(non mortise) but time ....

Hi. Visible hinges might not be very nice. However, I would use them. In fact, hidden hinges might loose a screw, start moving slightly and over time destry the hole. With visible hinges you always have control of the fasteners. Good luck.

And easy to get at a reasonable price. Also not too challenging to install.
      Leaning towards that...

It’s a jigsaw puzzle, just watching it is making me crazy. How you managed to find the right door for the right hole? These small things take a lot of time, but you both are doing it right. 👍🏼

For the most part right 🤣 When we get it wrong we will have to just get back to it.
      Hopefully doesn't happen too often.

It's coming together. Lots of work. I don't think I could have afforded to purchase your boat because of the cost of travel and renting somewhere to stay. That's basically why I didn't pull the trigger on making an offer on it and then I discovered the Cyber 48 about the same time as yours which I think will cost me less money and less time to build. Now I just have to wait till the economy improves before I pull the trigger and order the plans and then start the build. I'm thinking about two years but I'm not really sure about that. I'm looking forward to getting out on the water and start the adventure of a lifetime.

@@lauriekennedy7984 I've heard two years from several people if you have two people working on it at the same time. There are two three people welding up the hull right now and it's taking them about six to eight months. One of them is a professional boat builder with one helper.

Rox, 12:25… Bless you! Would internal standard adjustable hinges work like the kind they put in house cabinets work? That is a lot of them 💯! What a chore! Do you suppose the prior builder might have had a bunch of parts for Wilda at a different location?!

    • @buildingwilda
      @buildingwilda  7 місяців тому

Thanks 🙏 That is sort of what we are looking for. But adding the standard ones would mean adding a block to the back of the face where each hinge goes. We were hoping to find an affordable option that mounts directly on the back of the face of the cupboard and the door. They are inline... Not sure how to explain. Found one from Blum.... A bit big, and a bit too expensive though.
Lots of little bits around from the previous owner. Including hinges. But not over 120 pieces of any of them. Probably used one as a template for drilling all the holes.
      Still looking.
      Thanks for watching

@@buildingwilda if your doors are thin enough I think these ones might work. Instead of a block of wood, a matter of epoxy and they will hold tight, be flush, and are soft close. The Link I posted is for fifty each or 25 pairs.
