The best idle animation is in Mario Wonder, when you are riding a Yoshi as elephant Mario, and you stand around for too long, Yoshi just gets tired and collapses.
Glad you pointed out earthworm jim. He also has a really funny one in earthworm Jim 2 where he pulls out some tiny human from his pocket and he holds him out in front of him in his hand for a couple seconds and just stare at it and then eats it. But even funnier is when he's throwing something up straight up in the air, I forget what it is, I think it might be his gun but it couldn't be, buddy you just keep standing there and standing there it eventually actually falls straight down and hits him on the head knocking him straight down and then he scratches his head before getting up
Ristar was the best in this aspect! Every act of every zone had it's own idle animation and one of the bosses even uses it's idle animation as a fighting mechanic
Lego Marvel has some cool Idle animations, like Mr. Fantastic stretching, or Deadpool looking at the screen and taking out a banana gun. Other Lego games have some good ones too.
mario 64 mario dreaming about spaghetti and ravioli bayonetta 3 (maybe the first two as well but i remember 3 the most) she starts dancing if your health is full, iirc
The first idle animations that come to mind when I think of them is the ones in Ape Escape where Spike would play with a yo-yo, do a handstand, jam to a boombox, play with whatever tool in hand, use binoculars, sleep. speaking of Mario 64 started the trend of Marion and other characters falling asleep when idle for too long.
Speaking of Idle animations that kinda has effect during gameplay, in Sonic Advance 2, when you play as Knuckles and press the up button (which still counts as Idle animation), he's simply starts a series of endless punches, that STILL counts as an attack! It does take a couple of seconds and it may not be that useful, but I'm glad it exists in the game. Also! In Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy, during this idle animation at 05:14 , if the player starts moving, right after Crash gets splashed in Wumpa Juice and before Crash spins (as the ending of the idle animation), the splashed juice will still be on Crash, that can removed by simply spinning. I also believe that if you do this animation around Coco (specifically in Crash 3 hub world), she'll react with a laugh. (unless that was an accident in video I saw years ago. You tell me)
I really like Metroid Prime 1 & 2 idle animations, these include Samus calibrating her arm cannon, pointing to different locations, raising her hand and looking at it, or just lowering the cannon in a more relaxed position, this last one is special because if you walk slowly after it happens Samus won't raise the cannon as if she knows there aren't any threat around. It's not flashy or complex but it's incredibly effective in terms of immersion.
If I remember correctly those animations get lost in the Wii versions (Metroid Prime Trilogy), where her arm cannon is tided to the Wiimote. Parts of the idle animation can be only found in this version in the concept art, which are the ported concept arts from the Game Cube version (Metroid Prime 1).
Speaking of fighting game idle animations, in Them's Fightin' Herds there is a character named Nidra who charges her magic resource gauge by going into a stance where she sleeps. However if you idle long enough, she will slowly fall asleep while still standing and once her eyes are fully closed, it actually charges her magic.
Didn't get around to watching this video until now, but I'm shocked you didn't mention either Sonic nor Mario's idle animations where they literally take a nap. In Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 (don't remember), if you wait long enough, Sonic will just lie down on the ground with his legs crossed, twiddling his fingers. In Super Mario 64, if you wait long enough, Mario will sit down, then wait some more and he will lie down and fall asleep, even some little Z's come from him and some snoring sounds. In my opinion, aside from Sonic's toe-tapping and occasional watch-checking in Sonic 1, these are the most recognizable idle animations in gaming.
CJ quotes rap songs from the stations in GTA San Andreas. You hear him sing things like "Warm it up Kane! Warm it up Kane! Warm it up CJ! Warm it up Kane!"
Super Mario 64 is among the first 3D games with idle animations. At first Mario is just looking around but after awhile, he'll say "I get tired.", yawns and then sit down to sleep, hearing him snoring. After some time, he'll lie on the side and do some sleeptalking: "Nighty-nighty! Ah, spaghetti! Ooo, ravioli! Ah... mama mia.".
Idle animations and video games are so cool because it actually gives the character's personality. I mean, that's part of the reason why sonic became popular in the first place.
Crash Bandicoot 2 actually has a context sensitive idle too - in cold levels (snow-themed levels or levels where it's raining) he shivers and breathes on his hands, which he doesn't do in warmer areas. Good video, tho!
Sackboy in the LittleBigPlanet series has some cute idle animations. Sometimes, he'll start to fall asleep and shake himself awake, and he'll also sit down at times.
Ristar has a unique idle animation for every stage. My favoritres are the music level where he taps his feet and snaps his fingers to the beat, and the snow stage where he builds a mini snowman. But even cooler, if you idle during the boss fight, Ristar sculpts snowballs that he can use against the enemy.
I have a fun one: An idle animation that it's kinda objectively annoying and may mess with the player if it happens in the wrong place. In Another Crab's Treasure, a soulslike where you are a hermit crab travelling the ocean, the protagonist starts playing with one of your "estus-like" items, juggling with it, but when you press any button he drops it, and you can actually lose it if it falls down a cliff.
Also, an idle animation which effected the game was Aladdin for the Genesis, where if you can get Aladdin to do his idle thrust to "wear the Mickey Mouse Ears" an extra life icon will appear for you to pick up.
Jazz Jackrabbit has some coolest idle animations. In the first game, he just looks at the player and says "What you doing?", while eating a carrot. In the second game, he has a new animation where he gets impatient and looks at the player while saying: "Hey, hey c'mon what's up!".
In SpongeBob Truth or Square (I had the wii version) If you let SpongeBob stand around for a few minutes he’ll grow older and older until he becomes a skeleton. And when you move him, his skeleton falls over and he bounces back to normal! Fun video by the way! I enjoy your videos 😁
Oh, Ristar for sure. In Planet Scorch, he starts sweating, and in Planet Freon, he'll make little snowmen. WHICH BECOMES AN ACTUAL GAMEPLAY GIMMICK FOR THE MINIBOSS OF THAT WORLD, making snowballs to chuck at the opponent.
There is an obscure One Piece fighting game called Grand Battle! Swan Colosseum, and when a character waits a while, they'll begin idling. The best part is that some idle animations can benefit the character in question. For instance, Luffy will eat meat to regain health, Zoro will lift weights to increase power, and Usopp will quiver before jumping, giving him the ability to shoot a Flame Star once. It's a minor addition to a game like that, but it's just so fascinating to me.
That one animation in battle for bikini bottom, where SpongeBob gets older and older depending on how long you leave the game running, until he eventually passes away
Super Princess Peach: If you stand idle for a really long time, you'll be able to restore the magic of your mood meter! Mario vs Donkey Kong (GBA): If you stay in the game over screen long enough, you'll hear Mario snoring, and he will occasionally dream about Italian food. (It's not really an idle animation, but it was worth pointing out.)
I can’t help, but think there must be a different name for the idle animations that play when the character is literally stopped, standing ready for a button input and the cute stuff they do when you haven’t pushed a button for a while
Not idle, but Lego Star Wars lets you press a button that plays an animation specific to that character. Slave Leia will dance, Rebel Trooper will set himself in a militant stand, and Battle Droid Commander gets out a walkie-talkie and says, "Roger roger" (if you have the cheat enabled, that last one can temporarily shock all droids around you).
I love ocarina of time and mario 64s idle animation. They give mario and link so much life, when they would just stand originally, waiting for the player to play more.
in *Jungle no Ōja Tar-chan: Sekai Manyū Dai Kakutō no Maki* (basically a Japanese Tarzan in 94' SNES game), the character's idle animation would have him _lick his own armpit_ to refill his energy.
Ironic that it's Mega Man who would introduce a blinking animation in games since he's a character who needs it the least, being a robot and all. I'd argue that NOT having him blink would sell the idea of an android way better.
Probably not the most impressive but I like how in Red Dead Redemption, if it's sunny, John will swat away flies or take off his hat (if he's wearing one) and wipe his brow, while if it's raining, he shakes the water from his hands
One time I was playing Toon Link and fighting Young Link in SSBU (in person). Young Link was at high damage and I started charging my bow to shoot him, and he just stood there knowing his deku shield would stop the arrow, what he didn't know was that Young Link would lower his shield for an idle animation. After about 10 seconds of staring each other down from across the stage, Young Link did the animation and I shot him (and got a KO).
Bruh 7:45 how did you forget in crash bandicoot n sane trilogy when the wumpa fruit falls on crash's head if you move before he spins you can play as pink fur crash until you spin
> big SF5 match is going between a G player and an opponent > opponent is below half health, around 25% lower than half health even > as neutral starts to close, both players need an emergency bathroom break, forgetting to pause the game > TO doesn't notice because he's keeping track of other matches too and just assumes everything's fine > *G (player) wins by doing absolutely nothing*
By any chance, do you know of any idle animations in which Video Game Characters play Video Games? I know about Conker, Donkey Kong, Astro Bot, and Crash Bandicoot
They’re cool and all. But how did this even start? How did people come up with the idea of people moving so much when they’re doing nothing? And why did people think this was necessary?
Can you make a video on “Character Creator Music and Atmosphere”? I'm thinking; Original Demon's Souls Monster Hunter World Baldur's Gate III All of those have awesome character creation music and atmosphere.
The best idle animation is in Mario Wonder, when you are riding a Yoshi as elephant Mario, and you stand around for too long, Yoshi just gets tired and collapses.
Mentioning Mario Odessey and not mentioning all the birds that can land on Mario’s nose across all the kingdoms is crazy.
Glad you pointed out earthworm jim. He also has a really funny one in earthworm Jim 2 where he pulls out some tiny human from his pocket and he holds him out in front of him in his hand for a couple seconds and just stare at it and then eats it. 😮
Bro, i was just thinking about the idle animations the other day in mario and sonic games. Great vid dude
Ristar was the best in this aspect!
Every act of every zone had it's own idle animation and one of the bosses even uses it's idle animation as a fighting mechanic
i haven't watched the video yet but i was thinking exactly that
I was waiting for it to be mentioned and I was shocked it wasn't
Was scrolling down to look specifically for Ristar mentions because of this very thing. Good job!
I always called idle animations “I’m waiting” animations because of Sonic
"I'm waitiiiiing" (with Jaleel's voice)
Mega Man: The blink of '87
Lego Marvel has some cool Idle animations, like Mr. Fantastic stretching, or Deadpool looking at the screen and taking out a banana gun. Other Lego games have some good ones too.
I remember as a kid any time I got a new game the first thing I did was check the idle animations
mario 64 mario dreaming about spaghetti and ravioli
bayonetta 3 (maybe the first two as well but i remember 3 the most) she starts dancing if your health is full, iirc

Kiro is finally back for good content
When did he go bad?

4:03 danm animation looks great
CJ quotes rap songs from the stations in GTA San Andreas. You hear him sing things like "Warm it up Kane! Warm it up Kane! Warm it up CJ! Warm it up Kane!"
I love how Link can block projectiles in super smash bros it actually comes in handy sometimes and it's really neat
Gaming idle animation are aweome

Great video! Who else put the controller down in the 90's just to see your characters idle animations?
If they keep it, We need Achievements for Standing around for 1 Hour.
in persona 5, there are a TON of idle animations
Bro that vid was so cool !
Kiro!! You gonna make a video about idle animations and you gonna skip over Ristar!? But anyway great videos dude. Definitely earned my subscription!
I’ve never been so early to hear Kiro talk
Early bird catches the 🪱
Idle animations and video games are so cool because it actually gives the character's personality. I mean, that's part of the reason why sonic became popular in the first place.
I feel like this is something we don’t really see as much anymore
this video makes me want to idle
4:07 that's not the only thing you could call mesmerizing
Crash Bandicoot 2 actually has a context sensitive idle too - in cold levels (snow-themed levels or levels where it's raining) he shivers and breathes on his hands, which he doesn't do in warmer areas. Good video, tho!
Mario in 1996: Only falls asleep after 5 minutes
Mario in 2017: *CAN’T EVEN LAST 30 SECONDS WITHOUT YAWNING*
0:11 W DARKSTALKERS RAHHH
Darkstalkers has some great animations
@@kirotalksyt 💯
Sackboy in the LittleBigPlanet series has some cute idle animations. Sometimes, he'll start to fall asleep and shake himself awake, and he'll also sit down at times.
I love Commander Keen’s idle animation where he sits down to read a book.
Ristar has a unique idle animation for every stage.

Ristar on Genesis also has level specific idle animations; Ristar fanning himself in the heat, and snapping his fingers to the music to name a couple.
Oh, Ristar for sure. In Planet Scorch, he starts sweating, and in Planet Freon, he'll make little snowmen.

The sonic 2 idle anim is my favorite, he after 2-3 minutes, he just lies on the ground looking at you
Thank you for carrying out my request
That one animation in battle for bikini bottom, where SpongeBob gets older and older depending on how long you leave the game running, until he eventually passes away
Super Princess Peach: If you stand idle for a really long time, you'll be able to restore the magic of your mood meter!

The first idle animation I know of is Rockford from Boulder Dash. Rockford taps his foot if you are still for more than 3 seconds.
I’d honestly say that most people do see idol animations. Just about every game I’ve played, I’ve stood still for a bit for some reason
Not idle, but Lego Star Wars lets you press a button that plays an animation specific to that character. why is wario so cool?
cuz hes got rizz

Nice bro!

Image the og cast of street fighter II came back to sf III third strike
Breath of fire 3 has a puzzle that's solved by letting the idle animation play out. That always stuck with me

Yes you are
If you want a video topic, check out the charm of the Worms 3d and/or worms 4 mayhem. there is so much in those games.
Bruh 7:45 how did you forget in crash bandicoot n sane trilogy when the wumpa fruit falls on crash's head if you move before he spins you can play as pink fur crash until you spin
Another Kiro banger
The frist time you wear the phamtom thieves suit in persona 5 joker will have an unique idle animation of him checking out his new drip
Project Zero 1-4 have "idle scares" where creepy shit starts happening on the screen if you leave the game idle.

I've never seen that sneezing animation from OoT!
Idle animations the characters are Dancing 🕺
By any chance, do you know of any idle animations in which Video Game Characters play Video Games?
I know about Conker, Donkey Kong, Astro Bot, and Crash Bandicoot
You should’ve mentioned bb hooddd
I love sily idle animations
spyro had some simple ones i recall
I enjoyed this video
I think Sonic cd is the best
Edit: I also think earth worm Jim is pretty good too and fighting games too
Every time I hear your voice, I think of Junpei from persona
In Discworld Rincewind will look into the screen and ask about your whereabouts
Ok
Cool
Take a shot every time he says-
Young Joseph in JoJo All Star Battle is the best
Horizon zero dawn has some good animations depending on the area and weather
0:32 warioland 4 jumpscare
They’re cool and all. But how did this even start? How did people come up with the idea of people moving so much when they’re doing nothing? And why did people think this was necessary?
Ryu has jiggle physics
I always think of Botw idle animations
I'ld like to watch the next part
IDLEANIMATIONS
Sonic cd
Can you make a video on “Character Creator Music and Atmosphere”?
I'm thinking;
Original Demon's Souls
Monster Hunter World
Baldur's Gate III
All of those have awesome character creation music and atmosphere.
I am out of here, just a standing still animation video
Sonic cd is the best sonic game ever known to mankind.

No mention of Mai Shiranui and DOA?
C'mon now.
