  • Hi guys! There is a much cheaper alternative than buying a regular carbon brush in the market and it is by making your own carbon brush! I bought this Graphite Block online for only 300 pesos and I can assure you, you can make a lot of different size brushes with it.
    Just search for "Graphite Block" or "Graphite Ingot" on the web, the price will depend on the quality and shop you choose.
    Now I dont have to worry about what size or number to say to the hardware store because I will be making my own brushes now 😂

    Hi there. Great work. Just one question. Will the metal in contact with graphite became rusty since graphite is quite a noble metal? Thank you.

    A little bit worry about connection between brush and copper cable.

    • @JakeMarvinVillegas
      @JakeMarvinVillegas  Рік тому

      Yeah because there is no copper cable connected to the carbon brush, but dont worry sir especially if the carbon brush holder is conductive 😇

    Update: okay so I bought some from Amazon actually.
    Man, these blocks are not easy to cut.
    And copper graphite is way more tough.
    I'm probably going to need a Dremel or something.
    Done hand cutting lol.

      Wait there's a copper graphite too 😱 i wanna buy one hahaha
      Its easy to cut sir if you got a cutting tool, anyway is the copper graphite performance good sir? I really wanna know

    I can't tell, are those sparks coming from making contact with the commutator and the brushes?
    I just got into the whole starter building etc.
    Not sure if that's norm

    • @JakeMarvinVillegas
      @JakeMarvinVillegas  Рік тому

      Good day Sir it just sparks from the contact because the tip of the carbon is still pointy

    Could it be better in cutting graphite to use a sort or soap to catch the powder ?
    After that you can clean your hands and work bench just rinsing with water ...
    Of course handling graphite block with bare hands ( with soap ) would be a bit hard ...

    hey man, i appreciate you making this video. inspires me. i actually just took apart a car starter and fixed it up and its working again. only issue is i have a hard time finding the carbon brushes. and if i found some it was way to expensive. what kind of graphite is it ?

    Is the amount of commutator fire/burning/sparking at 1:27 normal for this motor or caused by the DIY carbon brushes?

    • @JakeMarvinVillegas
      @JakeMarvinVillegas  Рік тому +1

      Good day sir, its normal sir because i haven't cleaned the commutator well. If its very smooth, the sparks will be even more less

    • @CrazyPlayer-pf2hv
      @CrazyPlayer-pf2hv Рік тому +1

      @@JakeMarvinVillegas thanks for the quick reply.
      But commutator fire is not really a concerny, right? Or is it actually harmful for the motor?

    • @JakeMarvinVillegas
      @JakeMarvinVillegas  Рік тому

      Ur welcome sir, it is harmful if the sparks were big. It can burn the commutator

    • @Derek_Garnham
      @Derek_Garnham Місяць тому

      it will be sparking most before the wear creates a concave surface on the brush. cleaning/resurfacing the commutator helps to reduce them

    i cant find the exact same size carbon brush for my car starter motor, is it ok if i buy a bigger carbon brush and sand it?

    • @JakeMarvinVillegas

    • @matijamarjetic

      you can, but donor brush must be for starter as well. most probably high % of copper. High % copper motor brush is not the same as brush for starter!

      @@JakeMarvinVillegas Okay, hey I appreciate the reply. I'm trying to learn about energy generation and storage and graphite is pretty cool stuff. If the conductivity is the same, why replace it? Was the original worn down from use?

      @JakeMarvinVillegas  Рік тому

      You're welcome Sir. Wow thats an amazing interest you have Sir 😲
      I'm trying to find a cheaper source of carbon brush and this solid block of graphite is much cheaper (cost me 300 pesos around 3 dollars) compared to a ready made carbon brush. (Around 80 to 200 pesos per pair) which is a lot, that's why I made this video.

    No it is not true that ''any regular graphite'' with good conductivity will work. That is why you have massive sparking! Eventually it will burn the commutator and you can only throw it away. Machine also does not have the same power as it should have. The most important thing when choosing the right graphite material for power tools is resistivity and speed coefficient!

    • @mightyconker3903
      @mightyconker3903 6 місяців тому +2

      The sparking is due to the square brush which has not worn in yet

    What u made is just a cut piece of carbon .....this is not the way to make a carbon brush ....dear talk or take advice of expert how to make a carbon brush ....
    Carbon brush involves pigtail to be fixed on it for safety of instruments or your cut piece of carbon will eventually fall on commutator and damage it
    Your way will work for emergency basis not a permanent solution
