    "Nevertheless I am devoted to him." That's the duality of Angelique, exactly what kept the character so fascinating. That, and Lara Parker's skilled and believable delivery. Angelique is the author herself of the most misery inflicted on Barnabas, yet unhesitatingly will destroy anyone who tries to harm him. She loves him, yet he spurns her, so she is alternately vengeful but also protective. It's what got us straight home from school by 4p.m. without fail every single weekday. Still amazing.

    No one simply tried to 'kill' someone on DS. Instead, it was always, 'I am going to DESTROY you!' I love this show.

      @ Max Pierce. The reason that the writers of "Dark Shadows" TV soap opera rarely if ever had a character on the TV show say the word, "kill" is because back in the 1960's (and prior to then) the TV network censors would not allow that word to be heard in television shows unless the use of that word was considered necessary or unavoidable in a scene in a made-for-TV movie or in an episode of a TV show. Even in the 1974 made-for-TV movie "Wonder Woman", the evil character Angela (played by "The Price Is Right" model Anitra Ford) says to Diana Prince (a.k.a. Wonder Woman) after they fight each other and Wonder Woman wins the fight, that if she (Angela) ever sees Diana Prince again that she would "take her life". So even in some TV movies, the screenplay writers were not permitted by TV network censors to have a character say that word. Obviously the director or producer(s) of that 1974 made-for-TV movie, "Wonder Woman" decided that because young children might watch that made-for-TV movie when it was broadcast back in 1974, that the screenplay should not have the evil character Angela use the word "kill" in the fight scene between her and Wonder Woman in reference to her intentions towards the character Diana Prince ( a.k.a. "Wonder Woman") should they ever meet each other again.

      @@deniswilson8152 . You misread my posted comment. It is not that the TV networks during the 1960's didn't permit TV shows and made-for-TV movies to show a character on a TV show or in a movie being killed ( provided that the TV show or made-for-TV movies did not show the character being killed in an offensive manner ( e.g., showing blood or showing too much blood or showing a death in too violent a manner), but TV shows were discouraged by the censors from using language that was considered back then to be offensive. The word, "destroy" or "destroyed" was considered by the censors to be less offensive-sounding a word than the word "kill" or "killed". Obviously in some TV show scripts, it was necessary for a character to use the word, "kill" or "killed" if a scene called for the use of such a word, such as in the original "StarTrek" episode, "Errand of Mercy" in which Captain Kirk says to the head of the Organian Council that the three members of that council should be on the Federation's side in its' war against the Klingons because Klingon Commander Kor ordered his Klingon crew to kill 200 Organians in that episode of the original "Star Trek" TV series.

    My dad and I didn't discover this show until the reruns on the Sci Fi channel years ago. (He was in Vietnam during the '60s, and wasn't watching much TV at the time.) We both absolutely loved it! Such complex characters, especially Angelique. I wanted to hate the character, but I kept on cheering every time she showed up. This was definitely one of the top ten moments of the show for me. And it was a good bonding experience with my dad too. We kept a running list of who all died or got killed, and would record the show if either of us had to miss it. Good times....

    But wait there's more oh much "more" ahead: no one outwits ANGELIQUE when she throws a doubleganger in mix to get raid "destroy" Laura. That was awesome!!

Along with Katherine Lee Scott the actresses who portrayed Laura & Angelique were simply superb! The latter two were so menacing and deliciously frightening in any era! I know, I have the early episodes on DVD. Laura believes she can pass on her Phoenix powers to David, but Victoria Winters is warned by the ghost of Josette Dupres Collins that Laura has tried that before in the past with her other children, and it never worked. They all burned to death. I agree Angelique is more devious, but like I said, her emotions are her Achilles' heel. Laura is a lot more ruthless in that she's not hindered by emotions. She'll even kill her own children.

    The Leviathans are based on H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulu mythos of The Great Old Ones, or the Elder Gods, meaning they would have walked the Earth long before man and have been far more powerful than any vampire. I don't know why they would fear a werewolf any more than a vampire, though. Lovecraft stuff works well if it's done properly, and I don't know if a 60's soap opera would have had the production values to do something so ambitious. Gotta give them credit for trying, though.

    He did the same thing before - he went back to 1796 to save Victoria Winters and became a vampire again. Then, when he then returned to the present he was no longer a vampire due to the existence of Adam. When he was rebit during the dream curse, Adam absorbed the curse and kept him from becoming a vampire again. Should have had the same effect when he gets bitten again during the Leviathan arc.

    What an incredible match...Both powerful and both beautiful ladies of the supernatural. I always felt like Angelique was crafty and devious and always thought outside the box, where Laura, as powerful and destructive as she was to her enemies, was always one track minded or self absorbed. You cannot vanquish Laura unless her time was up or she had to return to the flames as the Phoenix until another century or so when she would return. Angelique seemed easy to vanquish as all you would need to do her in was fire. Angelique is the wittier of the two opponents as she created a doppelganger of herself that Laura thought she destroyed. But Laura is eternal and can never be truly defeated. Laura is the most powerful between the two.

      +A-DUB-YA1984 Good points. Laura often allowed her one track focus to prevent her from harnessing her true powers. Interestingly, she was not as destructive as Angelique. The latter left behind a death toll that few could rival!

    Well, he became a vampire again mostly because he traveled backwards in time using the I-Ching bars and pulled a "Quantum Leap" if you will. He left his human body in 1968 which had been cured of his vampirism, and entered his body entombed in the Collins family mausoleum in the 1890's when he was still a vampire. What I'm still confused about is what happened after Barnabas returned from the 1890's and whether or not he somehow remained a vampire.

    Emotions can weaken... or they can strengthen. They provide motivation, perception, insight. Angelique helped destroy the phoenix BECAUSE her emotions for Barnabas motivated her to ally with him temporarily in 1897. Laura's cold arrogance makes her unable to read people or detect danger. OTOH Angelique knows what others are feeling/thinking which enables her to manipulate, predict and outsmart them. Angelique's anger is more deadly than Laura's indifference - just ask Barnabas!!

    I didn't mind the Leviathan storyline, it just wasn't as well executed as it could have been. I liked that they tried to incorporate H.P. Lovecraft into the show and give Elizabeth and some of the other characters more to do than just have Barnabas be the focus all the time. I really like the first 209 episodes and I think the show lost some of that Gothic romance once Barnabas came along. Parallel time worked as long as it stayed in the present. It became convoluted when they went to the past.

    I agree the original Parallel Time worked-I will always despise the Leviathan cycle and I think most fans whether original or not do so also. I had a problem right from jump street-how did the Leviathans have power over a vampire without even using any elements such as silver or garlic which are weaknesses of the undead based upon legend? The Leviathans are scared to death of a werewolf?

    Basically, Angelique was able to make Laura age in front of her children who then rejected her--Laura was as a Phoenix scheduled to be called back to Ra then but wanted to bring her kids with her. I am not happy with the way Angelique had some power over Laura, a creature of fire; that was cheating guys. Angelique could not directly destroy Laura who would have destroyed Angelique--but the Phoenix only has a limited time on earth on each cycle. Laura will return in 1967!

    Why not a kitty - an immortal kitty might be nice, or perhaps an immortal mouse? She could make her obsessed with death. She could make her unable to move. She could make her love Roger. She could put out the fire in the urn. She could destroy the scarab. She could curse that anyone who loves her dies giving her no support. Lara outsmarted nobody - it was simply unbelievable to others that she would burn her children to death so they never anticipated or defended against it.

    I think Angelique would have won. Angelique is motivated by love/hate and venegance whereas Laura is simply arrogant. Besides, Angelique is smarter.

  • @44excalibur
    @44excalibur 12 років тому +1

    That's true. But Angelique also had the writers on her side trying to redeem her the way they did Barnabas. Laura(Diana Millay) was never going to be anything but a villain. Lara Parker was the more popular of the two.

    She should have skipped the Gloating Phase and gotten right to work. And choked up on that damned mallet -- so it couldn't have glanced off his pocketwatch or something. And the extended exposition by Angelique is classic. Curse you, plot devices!

    it is fascinating how many children were addicted to dark shadows opposed to hearing adults saying it as much.my mom didn't want me to watch but i pled my case

  • @RPenta

    Not quite; this is not a "sacrifice" but Laura desires the children to be immortal like herself. Let's remember, everybody focuses on Angelique cursing Barnabas: Angelique is responsible for the death of Sara and Josette Collins. It is clear from the clip here: IF Laura really wanted to destroy Angelique she could have done it at the old house. Despite what Angelique says to Laura at one point, the Phoenix does not seek out enemies but responds to them.

  • @RPenta
    @RPenta 12 років тому

    Right on-a major shame Laura was not brought back to tangle with Angelique or Nicholas Blair-although to maintain continuity that might have to have happened in the 21st century or in parallel time. IMO the first parallel time cycle was so underrated and welcome after the horrible "Leviathan" story line.

  • @44excalibur
    @44excalibur 12 років тому +1

    That's a good point, but Angelique does allow herself to be used and thrown away by those men she gets close to, like Barnabas and Nicholas Blair. Laura may have been defeated in 1897, but she only ended up reincarnating herself again in the 20th century and did it again in 1967. Angelique wields magic, and Laura is made of magic. I don't know which is worse. Laura overreaches and fails with each life, and Angelique keeps getting screwed over by men and coming back for more.

    To be sure, I was way PISSED when the brought Angelique back so easily--again do not violate mythology--she was completely destroyed by Ben and Barnabas by fire when she was in human form in her own century--not a ghost.

    Easy answer - writers forgot what they wrote. I agree that Barn should not be able to become a vampire again as long as Adam was alive.

    I don't know about that. Laura was introduced first, and is motivated by the desire to reincarnate herself over and over again by burning and rising from the ashes reborn, so she's essentially immortal. She's also motivated to pass her Phoenix powers on to her children by burning with them, like she tried to do with her son, David Collins. Both women are clever, but Angelique's weakness has always been her emotions where Barnabas is concerned. Men are always getting the best of her.

    By the way, wasn't Barnabas a normal human being once he returned to his body back in the present-day after the 1890's storyline? I thought he hadn't been a vampire in the present-day 1960's since the Adam and Eve storyine.

  • @RPenta

    Angelique is evil-demonic in fact; Laura is not evil but does evil things although she thinks what she is doing is a blessing to the children-to make them immortal like herself-Angelique thinks immortality is vampirism or zombieism.

  • @RPenta
    @RPenta 12 років тому +2

    very simple-as you can see from their encounter at the old house, Angelique could not affect the Phoenix at its full power-she only can do so as the life span of the Phoenix starts to wan and with that its powers.
