Grizzly 700 Drive Belt Change and Shim Mod Install for MORE Low End PoWeR
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 бер 2016
- This video shows how to change the drive belt and where to add a shim if you're needing more low end grunt on your Grizzly Ultramatic transmission. This method is a inexpensive method in gearing the Grizzly down on the bottom end to provide more pop. The shim is installed between the collar and spreads the sheaves. A disadvantage to this shim modification is losing some top end max speed. Others may decide to fork out the money to have their sheaves machined, which likely will not hinder max top speed. This video is perfect! I don’t want to watch a 20 minute video then do a 20 minute job. You summarized everything perfectly. Bravo sir.
Thanx bro my first grizzly and first automatic ever. Im learning. I bought an 07 fixer upper last week. Just got her started tonight, I swapped the wrong battery the previous owner had in there with the correct one, cleaned out the throttle body, new plug flushed the radiator, and new oil she sounds brand new. Gonna do a valve adjustment and possibly an epi clutch upgrade.
What a great video! You take the time to explain everything in detail including the size of the pieces being removed. This makes it so great for entry level novices who may not understand the process involved with doing this. Definitely worth a watch and more than worth the thumbs up I gave.
Sally Hinchey appreciate the comment. We're everyday people, doing our best to deliver do-it-yourself tips.
So caught up in my own panic, I forgot to mention what a great informative and understanding video you compiled! Great work for putting it together, and narrating every step of the way!
Thanks for the comment. We defiantly recommend the shim mod on anything that's not rode at road speed all the time.
Thank you thank you thank you. Did this in less than an hour because I watched this first and knew what I needed.. went with 1.7mm of shim. I can tell a difference but still feel like I need a spring.
Great tutorial! Concise, well narrated, well edited, well lit environment, and to the point! Without all the "listen to me and how much I know" BS incorporated into so many others out there. You just showed us in 4 minutes what two other videos took almost an hour of my time having to listen to bullshit in order to get a nugget of information out of. Wish I had found yours first. Thank you so much for taking the time to produce an exceptionally well done video!
Thanks for the comment!
@@everythingatv-utv-reviews3565 do you have a link for the shims ? I have a grizzly with 2 inch lift and 29.5 terminators how much of a shim should I do
GREAT VIDEO !!! simple well put straightforward video thanks a million for posting !!
Thanks !! Best video of how to do this. I love my Grizzly.
Note that upon handeling the primary basket you keep pressure on the cam plate so that the rollers/ weights will stay in place.
Tks for the vid!
not if the covers still on with the Phillips screws and copper washers, it will not open past the point where it falls apart
Wrong, if you do not keep pressure on the cam plate the weights may come out of the channels and it will get ugly, quick. That cover you mentioned is only there to keep grease from coming out.
I put my shims in and ready to go in about 20 min. with the help of a drill. I did not pull the top side cover .
Awesome video
Still learning how to do this and am confused as i just watched another video were he put the shim on the outer collar while you are putting it on the inside. Which is right inner or outer? Thanks for sharing by the way.
Great Video thanks for sharing.
Glad it helped
Hi, very interesting. Can you tell me the size of the shim you installed? Thanks!
James at JBS says the shims should go in front of that collar not behind it like in this video.
Very helpful thank you
Levi Garber, glad it was helpful.
Do you think theres room for 30 inch tires, no lift.
Well done! That will help many years down the road. I have a question about the shim. The center ID of that shim. It seems to be too large. I don't think it will hurt anything, just droops a bit on the shaft.
Thanks and yes you're correct. The shim was left over from a King Quad 750 shim mod years ago and was a bit larger. I also don't see it effecting anything mechanically and still produces the desired results.
It does hurt things. Totally wrecked my cvt
@@gwood701 not possible .....other factors were at play
I can’t get that 22mm bolt off. Whole primary keeps spinning
nice vid. my only question is that don't you have to be very careful when tightening up the 22mm nut? I'm looking into doing this and was told to torque the nut to 100ftlbs
I tried to get mine to 100 ftlbs but I could not keep it from turning when I tightened it, even with a ratchet strap. I ended up using some blue Loctite on it and hitting a few times with the impact. I believe the downside to overtightening is less than undertightening. You do not want that thing coming apart in there! I have seen people do it both ways.
To bad they don’t come with a folding lock washer
yes, 100ftlbs
I hope you can assist...So, if I want an upgrade to heavier tires, I should install this shim device? I just went to 8 ply Tusk Terabites which are heavier (by feel) than what the stock tires were. I have been riding and rock crawling, and it seems to be fine without a shim. Will there be any sign of damage, or slippage when I take a look inside, or when I drive it? I don't feel any slippage while driving currently. Are there different thicknesses to the shim, or are they just on size? How do I order one? Thanks so much in advance for the assistance.
Put the maximum amount of shims on with the splines still mating. Text me first and give me a call for more advice 606-425-0682
Don't you have to torque that nut down that holds the primary on to a spec?
I was thinking the same thing..its 100lbs
what kind of tires and nice vid
Thanks, those are Buzz Saw XC ATV tires. Here is our review on them ua-cam.com/video/o3c2rszabgg/v-deo.html
Does the shim have to be the same diameter as the bolt. I see your shim was bigger
It needs to be the approximate diameter as the collar. It doesn't have to be exact.

I changed the belt on my Grizzly just the way you done yours and now my primary won’t move in and out. Any idea what I could’ve done wrong?
I've done mods like this to several and never had that happen. How much shim did you use?
Brandon Wilkinson take apart ur primary clutch im sure one of ur weights its out of place good luck
Luis, thanks for the help
Luis Abraham Thank you sir! That’s exactly what was wrong!
Which mod do you think would be better 1.5mm or 2mm shim for 28"s on 2017 grizzly 700? Is there that much of a difference between .5mm?
Use as much shim as possible with the basket still meshing back with the groves.
@@everythingatv-utv-reviews3565 from what I've been reading, 1.5mm is about the max you can go ( a 1.0 and a .5 shim)
@@brianpiersol9412 Thanks for the information on the shim mod, much appreciated! Happy Thanksgiving 2021and Let's ride!
So I just bought a new 2019 Grizzly EPS, and it looks like they went with a larger stock tire (AT26) over the previous year. I just bought some Maxxis Zilla tires in an AT27. I am still not sure if I even need the shim mod on mine or not even with these larger tires. What do you suggest?
Jeff, congratulations on your new Grizzly. Personally I'd wait until you need to change your belt to install it, unless you're struggling for more bottom end with the new tires.
Great video. I have a 2018 yamaha grizzly 700 with 26" stock tires. I want to buy some 27"Maxxis zillas. Do you think I need a shim mod and what size please?
It's a cheap modification and yes even with stock tires you'll see an improvement. New belt and shim it as far as possible where the splines still mesh. Ebay has these kits for less than $20.
@@everythingatv-utv-reviews3565 does the belt have to be replaced? My grizzly only has 2000kms on it. I bought it at the end of August. Just don't want to replace the belt if I don't need to.
@@timber66 shouldn't need to replace the belt
Where do you get the shims at?
I got mine from ebay. Just search grizzly clutch shims. I just put a 1mm shim and a .5mm shim on mine last night, as I am running 28" Outlaws, and would like a little more bottom end. Don't care much about top speed. I believe my shims were $8 shipped to the house.
Is 1mm shim good enough for 27x12-12 all around
It will help... depends on where you want you're power and the conditions you're in. Really no right or wrong shim, if it meets what you're wanting it to do.
👍📽
where did you purchase the shims i have a 2007 king quad 700 what size shim did you use
Just curious did you ever shim your kind quad? I'm about to do mine just curious what kind of difference it made and what size shims did you use?
Yes, we did shim the KingQuad 750. It made a huge difference in the low end as they are geared high anyways. It went from topping out at 73 MPH to 69-70mph.
How thick is the shim?
The kit will come with several... we always put as many as possible where the sheeve will still engage.
Hello there
Can anyone help me out with my primary sheave issue, which is the following, belt does not stop spinning when idling, there are no Trouble codes, normal idle speed.
I know belt should be stopped when idling and I notice my weights are well installed.
1:52 "clutch" driver pulley... rube.
Wow! WAAAY too much crap to remove to get to the actual belt. Usually, Yamaha is smart in their designs. But this wasn't one of those times!
utah wanderlust700 I think they get away with it because their specific cvt design makes belts last an insanely long time. I still have the original in 2001 Kodiak 400 and use it too haul heavy things like wood and my boat all the time.
Yamahas dont blow belts that's why moron
LOL. You must own a Polaris. Just a guess.
😂😂😂😂😂
You must ride can am or polaris. The belts are hard to get to because they literally last thousands of miles 😂
