- Chris Forsberg might be one of the finest drivers that Formula Drift has ever seen. And after many years and many motors with the Z chassis, the latest iteration of his Formula Drift competition car is back with the heart of a GTR between the frame rails. And while Nissan’s N/A VK56 motorsports V8 sounded amazing, there’s no denying that twin turbos are the path to success. So today, we listen to the V6 song up on the Balcony track at Willow Springs.

370zs still feel really mechanical though like 90s cars. With just a racing seat and a good diff, you feel everything. The steering isn’t numb like all these new cars.
Same, just waiting for Nissan to release the new Z. Saving up for that

That thing looked as if it's an RC car, the way it moves like it's made of plastic while the power is really there
because its a drift car they buy body pieces that are more flexible and flimsy so they dont destroy the car

I would love to know more about his VQ builds and problems. I always figured a totally built (and sleeved) VQ would be in the same class as a VR motor. That's pretty cool how reliable the VR is.

Love chase car videos. Ever thought of putting camera mounted on some kind of movable gimbal device so you can pan camera left and right. I know they make 360 cameras, but the clarity is not as good as the ones you use. Just an idea. Probably sure you thought of it. Just thinking it would give a better shot to be able to sweep and track with cars sliding
You would need another operator in the car, and then you're getting dangerously close to a russian arm car! This setup has the huge advantage of being super simple.

V6 in general don't sound great but I love this one. Doesn't have the typical buzzing sound of the eco boost and vq motors
Most VQ's sound like crap because people straight pipe them for no reason. Put some solid effort into a good exhaust setup and they can sound quite good.

@@arinb.756 literally no one runs a gtr powered z. the vr and vq engines come in entirely different price points. The GT458 is still better tho

I wanna ask every single driver in FD if they think the start chicane is unecessary these era of drifting because thats what I think, FD cars have so much Horsepower that they can easily catch up to the lead driver

Considerning the GTR still holds the drift speed world record,using a VR38 in a Z34 for drifting seems an obvious choice. I still think Chris should have done the engine to almost 1400hp like the record breaking drift GTR as the VR38 is super reliable even at that power level.

He tried that in 2018, but kept blowing up the VQs. The VR38 is much stronger.
I was thinking a large displacement non turbo responsive engine would work best for drifting...
The problem is these guys run nutty amounts of power, too much in my opinion, and the effort and problems you'd run into with an engine like the one you described it's just easier to toughen up the insides and slap a fat turbo or 2 or a supercharger and call it a day, now if they would realize that the power they use is complete overkill then yes a large displacement v8 would work perfectly

GTR chassis is a pig they're too heavy for drifting... the team that ran one a couple years ago put the motor in an S15 and immediately started placing better.
They won’t, the company sees the GTR only for its 4WD capability, he’s approached Nissan before for one and they rejected.

Forsberg is a beast but he has a lot more competition than he did in the middle of last decade. Cool dude, hope he can turn it up moving forward.
P.S.: The VQ is AWFUL
everyone i know hates VQ engines. this just confirms it xD
They are cool motors, they just need SOO much work to be reliable. Even then, there are more reliable engines that make more power easier.
Reliability isn't the issue, as they are actually highly reliable. There's already been 300k documented VQ engines. They can handle 100 shot of nitrous easily. It's just when you start to boost them when the issues start occuring. They can handle being boosted but under low boost. My friends Dad had a supercharger on his 06 G35. It's still driving and is extremely reliable 14yrs later. My G35X has 205k and it's still as strong as ever. Not one issue mechanically.
They just aren't practical if you're trying to get anything over 350hp from a stock VQ. They need to be modified out the ass and it cost way too much in order to get over 400hp.
