Christian is more than a violin maestro. He is the soul of the violin if this wooden instrument does have a spirit life.

This is truly one of the glories of the repertoire, and the sublime phrasing and pacing is just luscious. I was privileged to hear Perlman, live, perform this in Albuquerque in 1967, but while he was wonderful, it just did not have the grace and also the real pizzazz of this performance. He is too often overlooked; the technique of Heifetz, the warmth of Kreisler and even the schmaltz of Elman. He left us far too young.

I grew up with this recording on vinyl and literally wore it out listening to it. Ferras is one of the main reasons I was never a huge Heifetz fan although I always greatly admired Heifetz's technique and do love a few of his recordings. But Ferras' musicality spoiled me for anything less. His playing is so "operatic"! He sings every phrase! He has style and grace and always gives 150% as if his very life depended on the integrity of the music. Nothing is "thrown away" musically. Just listen to the way he phrases the false harmonics and subsequent phrase before the recap in the last movement. He injects so much music into it. OH hell! the whole this is just purely musical from start to finish.

I decided to listen to this recording based on what you wrote. I must say that I am disappointed. I think he wasted a lot of good phrases trying to give his own flavor. Trying too hard, he messed up the tempo in a LOT of times too. Heifetz's recording really is one of the best recordings, but the crown goes to Spivakov for me. Maybe you should consider my recommendation this time and check it out. :) Thanks.

I've never read a comment so exactly matching my own thoughts (including how you wore out the LP; only difference is mine was a cassette, but EXACTLY the same in ABSOLUTELY every other respect. Could have written this entire comment exactly verbatim except "LP"), to a word.

I heard this one for the first time in '70 and went and bought the record. I've listened to a lot of interpretations by other violinists, but none of them caught me as Ferras did, and some didn't even come close. Like a lot of you I completely ruined the record by overplaying it, and was glad the CD era came about. Unfortunately Deutsche Grammophon bought themselves a brand new digital recording studio and started re-recording all major albums. In this case it meant without Ferras. Damn.
I nagged my local record shop for years getting them to ferret out some or other obscure different recording of Ferras, but after a few years (no Internet of any consequence then, remember?) frantically searching in catalogs and visiting Fairs they informed me that Deutsche Grammophon, having more or less finished re-recording all their major pieces, came around to remastering existing analogue recordings and releasing them on CD in series, not copies of the original albums.
    Ta-ta!
I went and bought one. I think the list of CD's with Ferras & Berliner Philharmoniker & Karajan was:
    Deutsche Grammophon 423 224-2GMW
    Deutsche Grammophon 429 166-2GR
    Deutsche Grammophon 463 774-2GB8
Check it first though, I am too lazy at the moment.
Enjoy! Christian Ferras was the greatest.

Ferras struggled with severe lifelong depression, which was the same mood of tchaikovisky while composing this master piece , RIP Christian , he did the best rendition Ever !!

Wiener Symphoniker is wrong: it's BERLINER PHILHARMONIKER, cond. by Karajan (Deutsche Grammophon). A fantastic recording! Also listen to Christian Ferras and his Tschaikowsky on EMI / Testament (which is with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Constantin Silvestri).

it's been 2 years since your post so perhaps you have encountered some of Menuhin's earlier recordings. They are well worth it and demonstrate why he was considered one of the greats. I think Menuhin suffered from a medical condition which caused his playing to deteriorate as he aged
