Don't buy it if you're looking for a good single player game, but if you want to play with your friends and many people online then you should consider getting it.
francisjairam I totally agree with this. The single player is super basic and short. It helps get a good grasp of the game, but multiplayer online and locally is where it’s at.
Even then youre still limited to Tournament mode or an incredibly gimped free play mode for online against randoms. No ranking system for better matchmaking, no community tournaments, nothing. The game is stupidly content anemic both single and multiplayer wise.
Yeah its the most fun Ive had with the game because you can actually rematch and learn your opponents tells and habits. Its still gimped as hell as against randoms you have absolutely no choice over the rules and are stuck with the first to 7 (no games or sets) format and one racket break completely ends what might have been an exciting match prematurely. No choice of maps either. Hell even locally you only get the choice of the normal tournament format or the same first to 7, nothing longer despite the game supporting longer formats in the UI and even having longer formats played in the AI tournaments. The game is very obviously rushed which is a giant shame as the actual gameplay is great.

I really want mario strikers back, I had A LOT of fun just playing online with randoms. I hope they’ll bring it back at some point. In the meantime I think I’ll buy this game to scratch that itch.
Shouldn't it have unlimited replay value due to online though? If you aren't buying a sports game with the intention of going online none of them really offer fair value. If you are however, it could be well worth it.

I loved the Mario Tennis on the DS as well as the Mario Basketball (which I hope they come out with again) and this game didn’t disappoint at all. One of my favorite switch games so far!
I bought this game mainly because i grew up playing mario and sonic Olympic games, and the ping pong. This is more of a throwback for me. It relates to the table tennis and gives me so many memories.
To me, I think games like mario tennis aces and Mario party are games to add to your stack and use on occasions, if there’s a party or you know, your friends are over.
You CAN play normal tennis scoring rules in freeplay. Change it to extended match instead of quick play. Its under the settings before you pick your characters
My expectations for this game where really low. The last mario tennis game I had looked was power tennis for game cube. I had played the 3ds tennis and hated it (which greatly effected my expectations for this game). The demo blew me out of the water though. I enjoyed it so much and I will definitely buy it. I think it would be cool if they had a ranked mode though
I personally loved this game. The mechanics are so solid and it feels like a natural expansion on the franchise. The Adventure mode also did a great job of teaching the basics. But it definitely does get a bit old after a while. It would be nice if there were more offline tournaments with different cups- much like MK8 and unlock able extra rackets and outfits sprinkled throughout to incentivize to keep playing. Online is fun but can be incredibly challenging
I recently got me and my son the demo for Mario strikers. (Mario soccer. ) it gave us I think like a 7 match limit. We got down to the last 3. Then decided to go against each other. I really didn't know how to play at the time. We tied 3 games in a row. And I ended up buying the real full physical game. So we could break our tie. BTW, he's only 5. But extremely good at games. And picking them up quick. Once I learned how to pass and shoot well, I ended up beating him like 7 to 1. Lol
Online is peer-to-peer for some reason, so connections are always trash. Online tournaments are the most frustrating thing. Everyone disconnects or drops out before the match even begins. Have to go through like 15-20 people to actually get a match going with someone who doesn't drop and has a 3+ bar connection with you.
P-Duck That doesn't happen to me like ever. Are you sure you're not the one with a spotty connection? Or maybe you're using Bowser Jr/Waluigi who are the most overpowered in the game?

God I love this game. The online matches are really fun, and I had the most fun playing doubles. Me and a CPU versus someone else and a CPU online was hilarious. I bet we could feel each other's frustration with our teammate as we felt like we relied on them too much to make the shot. As for the adventure mode, it's fun, challenging, and exactly what I wanted. 10/10
Adventure mode was challenging and unique. While on the shorter side and no much replay value, i think it was a nice addition rather than just straight up gameplay.
The single player story isn't the fist time the series has done it. The Gameboy Color Mario Tennis game had a full on RPG similar to something like Golf Story.
I just wish there were more details about the diffrences between characters and classes. Although the classes are pretty clear already if you look it up the diffrences between characters in the same class aren't. But there are slight diffrences such as reach, run speed and acceleration, certain shots being more powerful than others, faster and longer trick shots, pushback etc. Which are hard to try pin down on your own.
I have played all the console Mario Tennis and the N64 version was the best by far and the reason this franchise exists. Disappointing this Mario Tennis can't hold a flame to the N64 3 generations before it.
juicyjumbler I agree, the OG Mario Tennis on N64 was great, even the single player modes. Mostly focused on the tennis. Sure it had some gimmicky modes but the sequels really focused on the gimmicks and made it more of a party game.
It's really fun but I do have a few issues with it have with the controls and a few other things. -Being unable to aim your shot to the left or right without moving your character is annoying and has caused me to input shots I didn't mean to due to that. -X being the button to choose to lob or drop shot on top of double tapping it to trick shot has caused me a lot of frustration when I was getting used to the game due to accidentally double tapping it and missing the ball. The right stick can also be used to trick shot but you can turn it off if you want. However, you cannot do this with double tapping X to my dismay. -The game does a poor job of explaining many of its mechanics to you in a fluid, natural way (as far as I have seen in the adventure mode so far) so there will be things you don't know unless you read up in the tips menu. Even then, not all things are clear. The charged shot where you double tap the button seems virtually no different from the single press besides curving a slice more on tricky characters. -It seems too easy to return shots without even taking energy into account. I have gone through many rallies using just about every kind of shot and besides a fully charged lob, with the speed of the characters alone, pretty much every shot could be returned. It makes for a situation that seems more like who will mess up first rather than possibly out smarting your opponent. Even if your opponent is at one side of the court and you hit the ball to the other side, they can most likely make it in time. -The Topspin seems pretty much useless besides countering a fully charged Slice. -Non-Tricky characters' slices seem nearly useless -In some scenarios, if you/your opponent are playing very well, the match becomes very one-sided and basically impossible to win for the other person. When a star appears on the ground, you can launch a more powerful charged shot very quickly which fills up your energy meter a lot. When this happens, your opponent does not receive a star on the ground and usually when they return the shot, it isn't too powerful and typically leaves a star for you to stand on. When this happens, they receive very little energy compared to you and so, if this continues, you can fill up your bar very quickly and just spam the energy using shots at them until they eventually run out of energy trying to block and you earn a point. In my experience, the person who serves gets the first opportunity to go on this roll since most of the time, a star appears when their opponent returns the serve. -IMO, the Special shot is a bit too strong for it's energy price. It can break your opponent's racket, is basically impossible to block without spending a lot of energy (and even then, the timing is hard), can hit the ball from anywhere (Which could save you from an otherwise lost point), and only takes 30-50% of your energy if you act quick. If it took all of your opponent's energy or did less damage to your racket, that alone would be better I think. All these things combined cause me immense frustration and anger when I was getting used to the game yesterday. By today however, I've gotten used to it and adapted to it. Personally, I believe that most of these things are minor and in casual games, or the chaotic doubles games, most of these problems do not come up or matter. I'd still recommend it (I can only imagine how intense this game can be with friends) but these are things to be aware of.
Online tournaments are 2 game set match and can go to a 5th game tie breaker. Free play can also be 1 or 2 game set match. Never buy online focused games for the single player only. That being said this single player is leagues better than MK8dx. This game has insane competitive depth and it super fun and addicting. Online is amazing, it's pretty much lag free because there is a 10 second connection buffer mechanic they implemented that makes sure you have a solid connection before it lets you have a match. This is my first Mario Tennis game but I learned quickly and am having tons of fun. Honestly this reviewer was trash and made a lot of points concerning the pre-release version of the game.
There are all these games with Mario doing tennis, being a doctor, and going on adventures, but why can't there be a game with Mario fixing toilets, or maybe doing his taxes?

I played Power Tennis a ton. A bit disappointed there aren't more minigames and singleplayer tournaments. Also annoyed my boy Petey is a boss instead of a character.

I agree if you have no one around you to play it comes down to the online. That i feel is both Nintendo's biggest flaw and its biggest pro. It fosters in person games and with the portability of the Switch it can work but most people arent used to carrying more than a phone with games or are more leave the switch at home on a big tv they play. The "in person" side of Nintendo game kinda falls apart (not going to mention the social aspect of an adult playing a portable video game system which "adults" see as childish") But This is why i bought a second Switch. I actually just came back from the pub/bar played a few rounds with my wife local wireless while we chilled and waited for the pool table to open up. While i know this is a general statement on the Switch and not the game more adults need to use the portability aspect of the system more and go to a friends house or just utilize the wireless function more rather than leave it at home and play on the big tv all the time. Also more multiplayer games need to use the local wireless more its a huge component that 3rd parties are underutilized im currently looking for good multiplayer games that use it and there are so few.
I think the game is pretty good (I've played every single Mario tennis game out there.) I just wish you could tweak the rules, make online play a little more tournament like if possible.
What are the alternate costumes and how do you get them? The only one I see in the menus is Mario’s classic outfit from the online tournament demo. I think it would be cool to get the possessed characters’ skins from adventure mode.
My mom and I bought this (live on the other side of the world) to play together...but NOPE you can't play with friends it just creates a lobby that random people pop into so I'm super fucking pissed that I wasted money on a game that I literally won't ever play now and I made my mother waste money and time on it too since she'll also never play it either!
I don't feel that this is the kind of game that takes a few minutes to learn how to play properly. There's lots of things they didn't get into in this video that the demo tutorial tells you about. Also the concepts and proper execution, as well as knowing what all the shots are/do are intricate enough that It WILL require practice before you decide to play against any humans when it's not the simplified mode the game offers you (as had been described from that introductory video Nintendo put out). So I felt parts of this video were misleading.
Playing with friends is a lot of fun, playing single player is just garbage: either the CPU is cheap in the adventure mode, or too easy in the 'fair rules' tournament
I loved the foundation that this game has, I love the local and the online, I have had a mostly smooth online despite losing most of my matches. I hope we get harder offline tourneys and doubles tourneys in an update, as well as the fun ring and item matches as new modes that were in Tennis 64 and Power Tennis. A man can dream! (I know it's more Camelot than Ninty at this point)
Agree about it's not a game that's easy for anyone to pickup from the get go. As a party game, this sucks. Also it requires somewhat fast reflexes. Not really a game you can play with your little ones. But yeah, I'm currently having fun with the single player mode.

As someone who has never played any of the other tennis games i want to buy it but with so many other games coming out soon like Monster Hunter GU and Spider-Man i just feel like i should be saving my money on those more
The single player options do feel far too slim for a full price game. In some ways, it feels like a very robust Mario Party minigame. I would have preferred if there was more incentive to play the tournaments, like unlockable characters, maps, rackets, etc. The gameplay is great, but outside of online play, I don't find myself challenged enough by the AI to keep playing singe player.

Disappointed the motion controls aren’t very good. A lot of Nintendo fans miss that Wii Tenis feel and will look to fill that void here.
I played Mario Tennis on the Gameboy Color and on the GBA. I loved those games. This game looks really cool and I do plan on getting it

one big problem is that charaters have different "powers" and styles but some are way better than others like baby bowser...
I play tennis and loved the one on the N64. I got to play a demo of it and absolutely fell in love with it.

It makes for a situation that seems more like who will mess up first rather than possibly out smarting your opponent. Even if your opponent is at one side of the court and you hit the ball to the other side, they can most likely make it in time.
-The Topspin seems pretty much useless besides countering a fully charged Slice.
-Non-Tricky characters' slices seem nearly useless
-In some scenarios, if you/your opponent are playing very well, the match becomes very one-sided and basically impossible to win for the other person. When a star appears on the ground, you can launch a more powerful charged shot very quickly which fills up your energy meter a lot. When this happens, your opponent does not receive a star on the ground and usually when they return the shot, it isn't too powerful and typically leaves a star for you to stand on. When this happens, they receive very little energy compared to you and so, if this continues, you can fill up your bar very quickly and just spam the energy using shots at them until they eventually run out of energy trying to block and you earn a point. In my experience, the person who serves gets the first opportunity to go on this roll since most of the time, a star appears when their opponent returns the serve.
-IMO, the Special shot is a bit too strong for it's energy price. It can break your opponent's racket, is basically impossible to block without spending a lot of energy (and even then, the timing is hard), can hit the ball from anywhere (Which could save you from an otherwise lost point), and only takes 30-50% of your energy if you act quick. If it took all of your opponent's energy or did less damage to your racket, that alone would be better I think.
All these things combined cause me immense frustration and anger when I was getting used to the game yesterday. By today however, I've gotten used to it and adapted to it. Personally, I believe that most of these things are minor and in casual games, or the chaotic doubles games, most of these problems do not come up or matter. I'd still recommend it (I can only imagine how intense this game can be with friends) but these are things to be aware of.

Online tournaments are 2 game set match and can go to a 5th game tie breaker. Free play can also be 1 or 2 game set match. Never buy online focused games for the single player only. That being said this single player is leagues better than MK8dx. This game has insane competitive depth and it super fun and addicting. Online is amazing, it's pretty much lag free because there is a 10 second connection buffer mechanic they implemented that makes sure you have a solid connection before it lets you have a match. This is my first Mario Tennis game but I learned quickly and am having tons of fun.
Honestly this reviewer was trash and made a lot of points concerning the pre-release version of the game.
My first Mario Tennis game was on the Virtual Boy. Not counting the eye and neck damage... the game was great!
Not having an option to just retry is extremely frustrating!!!!! Why do I have to lose go back to the main screen and then come back in.

There are all these games with Mario doing tennis, being a doctor, and going on adventures, but why can't there be a game with Mario fixing toilets, or maybe doing his taxes?

I think some of the Mario sports game were really fun, like the Olympics games and definitely super Mario strikers.
I normally avoid the before you buy videos until after I play a game (if I watch the video at all) but this one I decided to watch since I am on the fence about this game. Looks like I will be picking it up sometime soon.
I played Power Tennis a ton. A bit disappointed there aren't more minigames and singleplayer tournaments. Also annoyed my boy Petey is a boss instead of a character.

I agree if you have no one around you to play it comes down to the online. That i feel is both Nintendo's biggest flaw and its biggest pro. It fosters in person games and with the portability of the Switch it can work but most people arent used to carrying more than a phone with games or are more leave the switch at home on a big tv they play. The "in person" side of Nintendo game kinda falls apart (not going to mention the social aspect of an adult playing a portable video game system which "adults" see as childish") But This is why i bought a second Switch. I actually just came back from the pub/bar played a few rounds with my wife local wireless while we chilled and waited for the pool table to open up. While i know this is a general statement on the Switch and not the game more adults need to use the portability aspect of the system more and go to a friends house or just utilize the wireless function more rather than leave it at home and play on the big tv all the time. Also more multiplayer games need to use the local wireless more its a huge component that 3rd parties are underutilized im currently looking for good multiplayer games that use it and there are so few.
The swing mode felt like a HUGE disappointment, it is unresponsive most of the time, Wii Sports from 2006 on Wii did the motion thing WAYYYYY better!
Well with wii sports you could swing randomly and still hit no matter what so I'm not sure that's a fair comparison

Nacho Ultra Smash only had the Mega Mushrooms and Jump Shots. Jump Shots were definitely reworked into Zone Shots
I think the game is pretty good (I've played every single Mario tennis game out there.) I just wish you could tweak the rules, make online play a little more tournament like if possible.
I will never forget the last Rally Challenge in Adventure Mode for making me want to snap my Switch in two
What are the alternate costumes and how do you get them? The only one I see in the menus is Mario’s classic outfit from the online tournament demo. I think it would be cool to get the possessed characters’ skins from adventure mode.
I don’t know if this solves your problem but in the rules you can change it to play a 6 game 1 set match

My mom and I bought this (live on the other side of the world) to play together...but NOPE you can't play with friends it just creates a lobby that random people pop into so I'm super fucking pissed that I wasted money on a game that I literally won't ever play now and I made my mother waste money and time on it too since she'll also never play it either!

I don't feel that this is the kind of game that takes a few minutes to learn how to play properly. There's lots of things they didn't get into in this video that the demo tutorial tells you about. Also the concepts and proper execution, as well as knowing what all the shots are/do are intricate enough that It WILL require practice before you decide to play against any humans when it's not the simplified mode the game offers you (as had been described from that introductory video Nintendo put out). So I felt parts of this video were misleading.
At the very least, I think we can all agree this is better than Ultra Smash.

Playing with friends is a lot of fun, playing single player is just garbage: either the CPU is cheap in the adventure mode, or too easy in the 'fair rules' tournament
I loved the foundation that this game has, I love the local and the online, I have had a mostly smooth online despite losing most of my matches. I hope we get harder offline tourneys and doubles tourneys in an update, as well as the fun ring and item matches as new modes that were in Tennis 64 and Power Tennis. A man can dream! (I know it's more Camelot than Ninty at this point)
Agree about it's not a game that's easy for anyone to pickup from the get go. As a party game, this sucks. Also it requires somewhat fast reflexes. Not really a game you can play with your little ones.
But yeah, I'm currently having fun with the single player mode.
60 dollars is way too expensive in my opinion for a Mario tennis game. If I had a switch, I'd gladly pay 30~40 dollars for it.
hey guys would you mind doing a before you buy on Minecraft bedrock edition for the nintendo switch because theirs one nasty tid bit i ran into when i bought that game and that is the dlc for the previous game wont work for it
As someone who has never played any of the other tennis games i want to buy it but with so many other games coming out soon like Monster Hunter GU and Spider-Man i just feel like i should be saving my money on those more
Online cheese is an epic struggle...drop shot shenanigans can a really so randomly. Random is key sometimes...
The single player options do feel far too slim for a full price game. In some ways, it feels like a very robust Mario Party minigame. I would have preferred if there was more incentive to play the tournaments, like unlockable characters, maps, rackets, etc. The gameplay is great, but outside of online play, I don't find myself challenged enough by the AI to keep playing singe player.
