Yes do another one use a bunch of narlest grain stuff you can find. Then you also have different colors of waxes and dyes stains and finishes. Green poplar redwood purple hart zebra wood red oak white oak black ebony rose wood try to butterfly the grain to make patterns in the board
BEAUTIFULLY original. As are all of your projects. Thank you so much for the gift of your talent..I can't stop watching these 3D board builds. I close my eyes and I see the Fibonacci sequence and the patterns you've built. I've watched all of these an unhealthy amount of time... LOL..jk..I think one of my favorite parts of your entire build is that "clack" "clack" "clack" as you put together the milled wood and glue it.. And I can't forget when you put the oil and beeswax on at the end... The incredible patterns just jump right through your camera to us. My favorite new channel UA-cam. God gave you some amazing talent that you share with us. I live on a small island off of the Eastern Shore of Virginia called Chincoteague Island. Island life is nice and slow!!
That turned out amazing! Woodworking keeps your brain going for sure. That's exactly why I'm trying to get back into it after since becoming permanently disabled.
just found your channel and content. This was awesome to follow along. I would enjoy seeing another build. This was inspiring to see the step ups and the step backs. Looking forward to seeing what I've missed in your story
Beautiful board! I love the design choice you made for the pieces, too. The classic style and colors go great with the board and they turned out beautifully as well. I'd love to see you do more chess boards.
Don't know how easy it would be to create, but I think it would be awesome to build a board with a design similar to that, but the board itself is actually a box where the inside of the box can store the chess (and checker) pieces. I love the way that you found a great way to use what wood you had laying around to build this. I'm certainly of the mind that the squares on the board only need to contrast. What colors/patterns they are doesn't really matter unless they clash.
Good work. I think your 2nd board should have darker squares. The spalting looks awesome. Recommend using spalting again combined with a darker wood like walnut which would compliment each other and really make it pop. If cutting wood playing pieces out with a cnc or a laser is an option vs carving (lol) I would go with that.
You did a fantastic job on board #1. I would love to see another chess board being made. Maybe more traditional wood like cherry, or paduk, or ebony and maple with accents from different woods. Again, congratulations on a very nice chess board.
That's awesome I used small pegs in the center of each square walnut and maple with the squares mahogany and maple with a alder corners and walnut came out very great your stuff is awesome
Great music during the 3D printing. Perfect setting in the woods with the music makes you fell like you're back in the middle ages. I like the chess board, maybe a little more contrast between the squares would be better, but still playable.
New ryan video 💥💥😲😲 dam Ryan that is absaloutley stunning looks amazing think a Very light and dark version would be beautiful. Im about to mill a whole load spalted wood myself hopefully turns out as nice. May have to try build one these. 👍🏴
Great work. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with how you made this chess board. In fact, I was amazed by how great the spalting looked in the end. The rings vs. spalting made differentiating the squares of the board quite nicely. But, if I were to offer one idea to improve the end product, maybe a thin line of walnut to accent the grid of the board, with a slightly thicker inlay on the edging. Another thing you might consider is a clear coat on the chess pieces. Alternately, I have seen some amazing things done with an epoxy dip or acetone vapour box with 3D filament prints.
This is a really cool build! Every time I see you build something it gives me that sense of “hey I can do that too!”. But then I look at “ALL” of the work that goes into these kinds of projects and say “awe, next time”, or “maybe when I have some time”. 😂 As a fellow wood worker I know the amount of work that goes into these projects, from milling, to assembly, to finishing (x2). And it’s not a walk in the park. But if you love doing it, it’s not that hard at all. My dream build is doing a chess table, with storage drawers for the pieces. I’ve seen one at an old hotel lobby in one of the local towns. Every time I see it, I think “I’m going to make one, one day!”. I will make one. But not now with the slew of projects that I have on the board right now. Good job on this one!!!
Try using tree supports for more intricate models like those pieces that look more like minifigures that you printed in red/black/white and also the on build plate only checkbox, I find that usually works better for more intricate models (I usually use tree supports for every print over standard supports because I find they're usually a lot easier to remove) Another suggestion I have is to use a prime tower when you're printing multicolor, it will equalize the pressure in the nozzle after the old filament has been purged from a filament swap and I find gives cleaner results and leaves less of those small straggler pieces attached where the first layer is being printed after a filament swap. I know Bambu Labs sponsored your last video where you showed your printers off and while makerworld is a great place for finding models I would also suggest checking out printables for models when you're searching for a model (Printables is by Prusa Research which is another 3D printer manufacturer that's been around for a long time) As someone who's been building 3D printers and printing stuff since 2011 I think it's awesome to see you using them in your builds! I'm an amateur woodworker and I just wanted to say your videos are awesome and super helpful! If you have any questions with printing I'm happy to help, I run all of the Bambu printers in my print farm as well as printers from a few other brands for things like resin printing.
It would be a lot of milling work but chaos squares versus pure wood squares might be interesting. Also another way to whittle down your pile of accumulating scrap.
I can't get rid of the feeling that you always buy too small. 🤨Seriously, Husqvarna 120? You can saw with your hand! I'm looking forward to the video next year with the STIHL MS881! 😁 I don't think maple and walnut are bad, it's just a classic combination. I could also imagine a chessboard made entirely of walnut, the light-colored squares cut from the sapwood of a plank. But if you want to go crazy, how about redwood and apple? Or purpleheart and cherry. Greetz from Austria, the land of exploding trees! 😀
I found some really great looking spalted material and decided to make a cutting board. Big mistake. I had arranged the patterns in the wood to form an image of a dragon. When it was all done it looked great, sad thing is, spalted looks great but after two uses it crumbled. What you did here will hold up forever.
Hey I just wanted to ask if you recommend an online hardwood supplier? Would you be willing to sell or donate any of that pile of off cuts to a beginner maker?
Hi Ryan, could you provide the chess piece file please. Happy to pay for it in your online store if thats possible? Also I'd go no infill and make those pieces solid so they feel expensive :)
Board was ok good, but chess set was awesome. I presume with as many hours to make chessmen, you wouldn’t sell it separately, would you??? If so, I’d be interested in getting a price from you……

that spalting looks really cool
Agreed
That’s absolutely beautiful!

Yesss, need to make another.
I have a new phrase, "Ryan Hawkins talkin'". Your videos and projects are my favorite on YT. Thanks Brother!!
The contrast came out fantastic. Would love to see what else you come it, your work is always a great lesson in practical art.
Beautiful
That turned out amazing! Woodworking keeps your brain going for sure. That's exactly why I'm trying to get back into it after since becoming permanently disabled.
The second I saw the drum sander show up on the screen I felt a wave of happiness for you, "finally!"
As a hobby woodworker: Beautiful work of art. As a serious chess player: You need more contrast between the dark and light squares.

Looks fantastic. Love your work.

Outstanding production! The finish really brings out the beauty of the wood!
That turned out awesome dude! Congrats on the drum sander 👊🏼
Holy hell... I'd soooo buy that! Nice job!

Probably my favourite video yet! (And the board looks fab in its new home)

Hi Ryan & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Ryan & Friends Randy
Looks great. Is love to see another. A bit more contrast between squares would be great s well. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and talent!
Those wood patterns are so gorgeous. Maybe a little metal trimming to finish it up. And the chess pieces are clean as f$&k. Chefs kiss.
Very cool Ryan. Chessboard #2 would be good when you get the time x
That's awesome I used small pegs in the center of each square walnut and maple with the squares mahogany and maple with a alder corners and walnut came out very great your stuff is awesome
Stunning work!!
This guy loves his stone metaphors. The content rocks though
Great music during the 3D printing. Perfect setting in the woods with the music makes you fell like you're back in the middle ages. I like the chess board, maybe a little more contrast between the squares would be better, but still playable.

Well done sir!
That is one of the best looking chessboards I have every seen! Love it!

You should do a shop tour

Yeah, more chess boards. Love to see what you create in that realm.

I appreciate all the info, thank you for that!

I've seen a couple of those out there, wouldn't mind giving it a go
This is so entertaining
beautiful!
Let's play, well done like it a lot. Bring on number 2.
That is an epic looking board
yes another please, ebony and a lighter hard wood, maybe a grove between the board and outer edge but all at the same height
Can't wait to see the next chess board.
Just goes to show, what a true craftsman can create out of junk logs.
Keep em coming!!!
Wow, you make really nice stuff. Love the chess pieces, great work!

Purple heart and ebony!
Would look great together, but hard on my current machines
Epic.
The contrast-oh yeah, there is none 😂
I love the chessboard. Definitely build #2
Board No2 how about the squares done in a chaos style? Dark woods in one light in the other…..
I found some really great looking spalted material and decided to make a cutting board. Big mistake. I had arranged the patterns in the wood to form an image of a dragon. Hey I just wanted to ask if you recommend an online hardwood supplier? Would you be willing to sell or donate any of that pile of off cuts to a beginner maker?
What type of router bit do you use to avoid tear out on your end grain pieces?
If you do end up making another, I suggest you consider making a Battlefield Chessboard.
Nice chess board 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
How much did you sell it for?
Nice!
Great
I never make only one of anything. Good luck.
Hi Ryan, could you provide the chess piece file please. Happy to pay for it in your online store if thats possible? Also I'd go no infill and make those pieces solid so they feel expensive :)

لقد اشتركت في القناة قبل ان تذكرني 😇👏👏
11:17 umm…. That freakin pile of scraps man…. Yikes.
Out of control, I know. I recently cleaned it up + organized it all.
