Rob is my personal drum hero as an instructor. I’ve learned SO much watching this channel.
Rob taught me how to tune my kit so it sounds AMAZING ! (Can you say “maximum thumpification ?”) 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I love them! Beautiful bright sound. Everyone plays dark cymbals and I get it, cuz they sound amazing. But I think Paiste makes some of the most musical bright cymbals.
It’s because Paiste is a huge fan of using B8 bronze, and in my opinion are the only company that actually can make it sound good, and they make it sound really damn good
I use Paiste because they are cheap, but sound amazing. Why spend over 250 for a crash cymbal when I can buy a paiste crash for 150 and sounds just as good, if not better, as the overpriced Zildjian? Paiste will always be the best cymbals in my opinion.
@@blackatron666 Paiste cheap? Where the fuck do you live?? Maybe this 900 series is cheaper but generally the high-end cymbals of Paiste cost an eye... And this is coming from a person who lives in Italy and doesn't even get the overprice outside Europe.
As someone who mostly plays loud music, I don't have much use for super dark/dry cymbals. The Paiste Dark Energy ride though.....
@@6393dude I also play loud music. The only thing I like kind of brighter sounding are my hats. I use a 20" as my smallest crash and a 24" ride. Gives me darker sounds on medium thin/medium cymbals without sacrificing volume.
the the way those cymbals sound! the way you hit them us soo smooth..thats awesome!
Thank you so much bro! I’ve been wanting to get the 900 series. I started with the universal 101 line but now I’m looking to upgrade so this review was RIGHT ON TIME!!
Do it! I upgraded to the 900s last year as a congratulations on getting through 2020 present to myself. Great cymbals, really versatile sound and fantastic pricing. Definitely go for the heavy Hi- hats. I got the heavy crashes (19" and 17") for the darker tone. Went for the medium heavy ride because I love the wash it gives you.
I was planning to buy cymbals from the 900-series first but dug little deeper in the wallet and went for 2002´s. 😊
Would probably not have been disappointed on theese. But dang I love my 2002 22" Ride (3206g).
Rob- Thanks for these videos, they have inspired me to pick up the drums again after 20 years! I do like the sound of the "natural" finished 900's, but I have also heard the "dyed" models as well, and I have found what others have pointed out; the application of the color coat adversely affects their sound. To me they often sound too clangey and electronic.
There’s nothing wrong with the color coated cymbals .
I love the high hats and the ride. I can see these mixed with Sabian crashes making a great "Doors" like sound for Blues or a more Jazz like Rock
Rob. You are a wonderful musician. Thanks for sharing your talent.
I just got a heavy set of these. I really love these cymbals. I think the heavy sound better.
Great review, thanks for the cymbal demo and not trying to show people that you have chops.
900 Ride is a price/performance leader no doubt. The 12" is also a great bargain at $70 street price.
What would you recommend for recording in a small lo-tech bedroom studio? I don’t want it to drown everything out. (I never play live and don’t have a band)
BTW been listening to your reviews and grooves for years but just subscribed ha ha. You play so much like my dad who died a couple years ago. He always said he was drumming best when he was dancing in the throne. You kinda dance like him when you play. It feels like I’m a kid again watching him and getting that excited feeling about the groove. When I watch your videos he feels close.
I love how quick the crash cymbals decay.
I surely appreciate this video. Although I'm a long time Sabian player, I certainly dig all brands.
An old, thin, trashy sounding 14" (idk what) found in a pawn shop for $15 is still among my personal favorites.
Bells are my latest craze, however splash's and mini holy china's have my ear too.
So many cymbals, so little time \m/
Rob, you are a drum god. Keep doing what God put you on this earth to do. Oh, and the cymbals don't sound bad, either! I'm sure you could make Paiste 101s sound amazing. Bless!
Fantastic playing and fantastic review! I was thinking about getting a 20" crash for a ride to get that crash/ride "wash" but want the most for my money. The quarter note/shuffle groove you played perfectly pulled the sound I'm looking for. So tomorrow I'm placing an order (different from what I wanted but a much better decision made because of your video presentation) for a 20" ride. I can't wait to get into this cymbal line BECAUSE of your wonderful review. Thank you so much!
I subscribed of course and look forward to more of your playing. You are a gifted drummer!
Subbed and liked!!!
I think these cymbals will be great for rock or metal because of how much they cut. I also kinda prefer the 18”, 19”, and 20” crashes from this series (the smaller cymbals are way to bright) the only heavies I like from this series are the hi hats and rides, the heavy crashes are a big no no for me. Great playing and review, Rob.
With the crashes I totally agree. I would not go smaller than this 17". The bigger the better.
Hannibu it’s funny. Usually I stick to average sized cymbals (16, 17, and 18) but for this line I’d go bigger because they’re so bright.
yeah i played the crashes and heavy crashes in the store. i just love the heavy hats the mega 24 ride and the regular crashes + 18 china
moonabys PST7 Are Way better than this
“Cut” is overrated. It’s a term used more for marketing than anything else. Blend is what you really want.
The 24 mega ride sounds amazing
Kinda love the 12" splash! PAISTE Chinas 👍🏻 Goes without sayin'.
I just picked up the sound edge 14in hats, 18in crash and 20in ride all colorsound in black, get them tuesday, can't wait
Well I got them in and loved them so much I got a 16in crash to go with the rest. They are a little darker than the regular 900 series but they sound great still. I love them and they look kick ass on my kit too
Really awesome cymbals if youre looking to get something decent for less money. But as much as these look cool id rather pay a bit more and continue to use 2002s. The 15" heavy hats being the stand out as they dont make those in the 2002 line, only 15" SE. nice review 🖒
i like listening to you play, its like listening to ice cream!
Nice review! They sound great.
Can't hardly hear that ride, what happens when playing with a band?
It’s louder than it appears, picked up a set yesterday, pleased with my purchase
900 series rules!
@Rob Brown I'm stuggling to decide between these 900's with the odd size crashes (17,19) or the PST 7's with med. hats, heavy ride, and either 17" and 19" crashes or 18" crash and a light ride as the larger crash. Which cymbals are more versatile and/or musical?
Stay with the 900 , they are a semi-pro cymbal
@@sandrider1406 I went the handmade Turkish cymbals route and I love them. Some cutom made Soultone 16" hats and 24" ride, Bosphorus 22" and a Zultan 20"
These sound better than most Zildjian crashes
These cymbals are okay. If I had my choice between these or the PST7s, I would take the PST7 medium-weight cymbals. The PST7's are a lot more musical than these 900's are.
Agreed. I picked up a pair of medium 18" and 19" crashes over the summer and for my money, the best sounding cymbals in that price range. Especially for working drummers on a budget.
Do you say that having played both or just the PST7'S vs this video? Just curious is all. I just ordered the extended odd set of the 900's just going off of online stuff. Was debating between them and PST7 with 17 and 19 crash (medium). I went with the 900's after hearing a few in Guitar Center. They seemed to have a bit less of that "gongy" sound.
Bryan Forth Hi guys...I just want to agree what you have said....I own PST7 mix thin with medium...and I absolutely love them👍🏼👍🏼 These 900 are nice to look at cool design 🥁Keep drumming
@@jonathanbormann5077 I sent my PST7 18" crash back, got a meinl custom classics dark 18", sent that back, and now I'm very happy with the 18" 900 medium crash
@@KeepTheGates so I actually gave up on all the mid-range stuff. I really don't personally care for B8. Even the good stuff (2002, Giant Beat, etc.) has that gong-ish sound to me and far too bright for my liking. After many failed used GC trials I ended up ordering some cymbals from Thomann Music in Germany. Their house brand is Zultan, which are literally just re-stamped Turkish cymbals. They should be here in a few days. I'm quite excited. I went with their Caz Series. 15" hh, 18" and 20" crashes of hand made B20 shipped to California for $386. Can't beat that
I'm more of a Meinle fan. But honestly.... you'd probably make tin foil sound like paragons. Hold up.. got a phone call, brb. Yep.. that was Mr. Peart. He said you have to stop now. He muttered something about you making him sound like a garage drummer. I don't know, don't shoot the messenger.
Everything but the two crashes. There just 😖😬
Nah Pass! I'm hooked on meinl, Pasite is sooooooo yesterday's news. if you had asked me what cymbals i like the best 4 years ago, i would've said Zildjian A Custom, Sabian AAX and Paiste Alphas. but now, nothing is even touching Meinl. yeah these 900 series sound ok, but they lack character and doesn't sound anything new to me. tbh they sound like the kinda cymbals were being used in Techno genre back in 2000 era. so good review, meh cymbals
I tried a few Meinls at GC and they all sounded like trash. I dont know what lines they were. For crashes, nothing yet exists that beats Paiste Full Sigs, IMO.
I finally found a video on these 900 series that is not rock or metal. I wish you had music with it but still good. We'll done video. Thank you for it.
I'm glad they are a little darker or lower in tone than the PST7 but I'm disappointed in it because it has a odd sound I don't like. I don't know how to describe it but I don't like what I hear. I do love the finish.
Thanks for the video.
Thats excactly how i feel about them too!
Me too, pst7 are way better
Eduardo Alessi I’ve got pst7s and I love them
I have a 900 series 20" heavy ride, and it's quite good, and the 15" hat from this video sounds fine, but I don't like the sound of crashes and splashes, and the colorsound line is actually disappointing. PST7s are nice though.
@@VagonGeroev I finally found a few 900 series and I agree with you. The ride and hats sound great but the crashes sounded weak and weird to me. The PST7 I like also
I definitely prefer the 14" hats. I got the sound edge to really get that sizzle even when closed.
I've NEVER seen anyone play a shuffle like that. Fascinating idea. Sounds great.
Finally a video that does what it suppose to do and that is...HEAR THE CYMBALS !!! So many cymbals reviews showcase too much
the drummer's abilities or the drums. I heard how amazing theses cymbals sounded after a minute of you playing them.
Very nice !!! Thanks for posting.
I tried the 20 inch ride at GC today and it sounds great. I'm really happy Paiste introduced this line. I know they label them intermediate but I think they are up there with the 2002 line and have their own distinct sound quality. A very special line.
As someone who is an accidental Paiste collector, it’s funny to me how often I grab my alpha brilliant cymbals for certain contexts. There is also some X factor about these 900s I love
Those 15” hi hats , those are what I’m looking for!
I got them and they are as good as Rob says
Rob, you're one of my regular stops on the UA-cam journey. Thanks for your work on this site.
Good grooves no theatrics. Inspiring playing. Thank you.
The 15"s do sound good but I like the 14"s as well. Knowing me I would get the 14s
Anyone trying jazz with this series? The crashes don’t bother me, but that ride sounds great, i’m tired of so many zildjians and wannabezildjians that sound like a plumb tube
I answer to myself. Just retourned today a 22" ride, absolutely imposible to crash with a normal hit, and this was a "regular", I don't know how thick could be the "heavy" one
Im thinking about blending some of these with my 24 in 2002. Great demo Rob. Thanks so much man! U rule!
Came across these when first introduced at a local pro shop. I was looking for a good jazz ride/22". Tried the 900 22" on the rack, and was impressed. I could see this (the 22" at least), used as such....half the price of what I did go with, a 2002 Big Beat. Paiste is the best with B8, no doubt
Thanks for the info. Just started researching these and I’m going to start with the 22 ride then maybe the 17 crash and 15 hi hats 🎶👊
According to this video, they sound better than the Alphas, which they are apparently replacing. Especially the 19" crash sounds excellent! The colorsound dryness works well with hi-hats and rides, but not crashes. 14" hihat's sound like a childs toy after the 15" heavys. I use 15" heavys myself, only 2000 series, but these sound fine too.
Dude these sound AWESOME! So fun to listen to. That HF wash like plate glass shattering over a sheet of ice. It does die quick like you said-which I kinda prefer cuz you can do lots of cymbals and it doesn’t get messy. Unlike the other mid-range Paistes; the PST 7s and 8s have that unmusical manhole cover clang underneath the other sound layers. Attack/stick definition is clear and the bells have a bright ping that cuts to the front of the mix just right, like a beautiful church bell
I dig all your videos that I’ve watched. Great great info. And you got a lot of sweet grooves etc. right on man👍
I’m about a month in NEW to drumming. Got a 7pc Tama SuperStar classic. At my age I got a lot of hurry up learning. lol
Thanks man you got tons cool stuff!
I loved the 15" hats... The 20" ride was nice.. I'd probably go for the 22". The crashes sound great, I would go for 18, 19 and 20.. also dig the china.. like to try the 18, but the 16 did speak to me... Nice review Rob, and awesome playing (as per usual) . these might mix well with Big Beats..mix and match? In any case they are way cool and they look real sexy.. I love Paiste. Was just listening again... The stage customs w/UV1's sound really tough.. I'm listening through a nice set of cans.. I'm impressed with this review. :) I keep coming back..lol.. I think Paiste should offer sound edge for the 15" Giant Beat and the Big Beat and THESE.. I keep coming back... I loved the Steve Gadd Shuffle during the Ride cymbal part.. I actually use that. Thanks man. I brought it into a session a couple months ago.. and the guitarist / producer in this session freaked... it changed the whole dynamic of the tune.... I told them..I learned it from Rob ..
I discovered and joyfully played the 20" ride 900, it has not a much exaggerated volume, so it fits very well for electronic music for example
I’d rather my Pst7s...all the way...my opinion!!!
Is the china loud?because my last experience with a china(zildjian planet z 18" china) was horrible,it sounded like a tin can being shot by a 9mm
Enjoyed your playing as usual, the cymbals are ok..
somehow I don't get the impression that Rob was as satisfied with these cymbals as he was with PST7's...
True but he bought the PST7s himself at the time if memory serves. The 900 Series here were sent to him by Paiste for testing / presenting but he now plays all the best Paiste's like Signatures and so on.
Bro that intro was fucking of the chain. You could have ended the video there and the review was done. Amazing demonstration of these cymbals and you're a boss.
Rob, what snare drum are you using here ? It sounds FANTASTIC-AMAZING !!
I was going to get a pack online with 14 hats, 16 crash, and 20 ride because I already have an 18 in this series, after hearing those heavy 15s though, I have to get those.
Those 15" heavy hats sound light years better than the 14's
Great review, Rob. I used to own a pair of 2002 crashes. A 15 inch and 17 inch. Immediately when you started hitting those 900 series crashes, I thought back to my old Paiste’s.
Great review and I concur with you analysis. As I mentioned in the unpacking video comment section, I’m a Sabian player and I incorporate two “beginner” models (B8 Pro O-Zone and China) into my professional set-up. Sound is my only concern in deciding what cymbals to incorporate. If an inexpensive cymbal gives the tone you are looking for then use it (price point be damned). As with technique, gear selection should always be about letting our unique voice shine through on the instrument. Insightful as always Rob, looking forward to your next video.
Please support Rob’s fine work on Patreon folks.
I have a set of heavy 900s. I love their sound. Just the right amount of light and shade. Great midrange frequency’s.
Thanks I think I'll order some now
Got an 18 crash and sounds great!
I just want to say that I wish all reviews were as good as this one is...you killed it Brother and I thank you
Just discovered your channel.. well done on the review and solid playing. I've had my eye on a few of these for quite some time
It’d be cool to see medium thin lines
As a paiste user of over twenty years, I have yet to find a cymbal as good as 2002. I also use paiste twenty, alpha and signature. I think the 900 in my opinion are entry level cymbals but sound a hell of a lot better than the 101, PST7 and PST3 I use for rehearsals.
Agreed! I have the 2002 16" & 18" crashes, and 2002 sound edge HH's. I will never let them go.
I think they sound pretty fantastic. I’ve actually been contemplating getting a set of 900’s to go with my Signatures, Sound Formulas, and 2002’s. I think the 900s sound better than the 2002s.
They sound "better" than the 2002's? To each his own. One thing I love about the 900 series is that the sound so musical, and they don't sound cheap. They sound fantastic, and that is a wide range of sounds!
Honestly I like the 14" hats better than the 15" which sound too heavy to me
Hey Rob, great video as always! I put together a mix of Paistes for a punk gig: 16" 2002 crash, 18" PST7 thin crash, 20" 900 ride and 14" 900 Color Sound (sound edge) hats. I agree with everything you're saying in the video. The color sounds are definitely a little less "nice" sounding with the exception of the hihats. I really dig the sound edge version of the 14" color sound hats. The 20" rides were pretty different between the regular 900 and the color sound version, the regular one opens up a little more.
I have the 24 inch mega ride from this series. It's mega loud!
I really dig the reviews, thanks man 🙏
Sick playing.
Super tinny
Got it. 900 is good, colored sound like shit. Medium thick cymbals. Better than competing brands for price point. Great cymbals all around. Just wish the colored were just as good, that would be nice. I’m all about tone, I swap both Aax crash, hhx Omni ride, a custom crash, , and a k sweet 15 hat. Wide range to say the least but I blends great
Nice playing and I like that drum kit..always liked wood-hooped drums. Don't have any Paiste cymbals in my collection but I've always liked Paiste 'Signature' series cymbals tried out a Signature ride some years ago it had a luscious shimmery 'glass' sound. Had an opportunity to play a black 'Colorsound' ride some years ago and as recall it was rather dry with a lot of stick definition.
Well the 16" crash sounds like most 16" crashes. 😀 And it sounds more splashy while the splash sounds more crashy. 🙃 But great cymbals I would not reject on any club's house kit. 😜 Just awesome how you crash that ride!!!
I've got the 15 heavy hats (cool AF), the 16 crash (averagely good) and the 16 china ( I'm wishing I'd got the 18 instead, so the "TANG" sound would be more like "TAAANG". ) All up they're not Zildjian K's but they're not bad for a quarter of the price.
Well explained glad you sampled the 15 hats. Also mentioned the sound edge option or add on. I'm digging em. Thanks, Keep up the good work 👍✌️
You're the only person who actually demo'ed the 15" hats. Thank You!
+Luke The Duke Really?! They’re the freakin highlight of the entire lineup
no 13 hats sadly, I like the crash beside the ride,is that 17?
I prefer my alpha power ride to that 900 any day. Great work Rob.
I like all of these except the 17” crash. For some reason it seems brittle, almost like a B8 cymbal. Wonder what the 18” sounds like. Nice ride and hats for this price point, and the China is cool. It’s hard to impress me with splashes, since I own (and sadly broke) the best splash cymbal ever. It was an A Zildjian, so it’ll never be duplicated...
No contest between the 14'' and heavy 15''! Its definitely better. Was thinking of a K series zildjion ride, now i'm not so sure..
Pst7s are the best musical cymbals for the money. These cymbals are a total, and I mean total flop.
I think $160 isn't bad at all for a Paiste. I was curious how much they cost in Canada currency wise. Not sure what you use up there.
900>2002. The coating and changes make the 2002 B8 more palatable for me.
I just bought the 15” heavy HHats and they are an incredible cymbal. Very versatile and can be played with most music genre’s
too cutting, bright, unidimensional and uncontrollable cymbals for my taste. But besides that, i don't see them fitting your playing style. Sorry, no hating, just saying.
Drumaier J that’s pretty much paiste in a nutshell. They’ve always excelled at those types of cymbals.
Yes i realize that, and that is why i never liked paiste at all.
Drumaier J I recommend you check out the colorsound series. They’re a bit dryer and quicker than these cymbals. If you still don’t like em, no harm done. Everyone has their own taste
I just dont like this style of cymbals, same goes for sabian aa line, and zildjian avedis for that matter (even that those are b20 and more high end thatn this ones). Tha being said, i think for live situations and rock bands these would do the job. I just love hand hammered b20 cymbals so my taste is exactly the opposite of these.
Drumaier J I kinda want to try out those hand hammered’s as well. What series has the best in your opinion?
Rob the 900 are semi-pro cymbals check out the Paiste website
Very full review ! Subscribed !
I love Paiste and everything so much. They really did good with the 900’s. Can you do a video comparing these to the PST7? They both have that same darkness and washiness
Pst7's are sharper, the Paiste "glass" sound is more prominent. These are better suited for jazz and fusion
what do you think. Sabian XSR or Paiste 900 ?
i love that ride and hi hats but i'm getting the 15 heavy hats and the 24 mega ride ;-)
Do you do any Paiste comparison videos? I have a whole set of 3000 serious that are supposedly a "step up" from the Formula 2002 series. The same source that I got those from now has an even bigger set of brand new Alpha series. Do you have an opinion on the Alpha series? Thanks.
I didn’t like everything in that line but they had a couple good ones in there. My 18” Alpha Swiss, though, still one the best sounding FX cymbals I’ve heard. Reintroduced the idea in the PST-X but it ain’t nearly as sweet
I'm kind of a paiste guy, but I have to admit: these cymbals sound horrible! I would even prefer a set of pst5s over the 900s. Kinda sad actually :(
I have the 900 hats. Great for the price.
Thanks Rob, I'm looking forward to getting my new hats now 👍
Hey Rob, I have 15" SE 2002 hats and I cracked the top hat. All of my other cymbals are 2002 as well. Are there other hats that would sound good with 2002s?
Either just grab another pair of SEs, or try a pair of Giant Beats. Same 2002 bronze alloy. Nice hats
What's your opinion on the Paiste 2002 22" ride cymbal for rock? I have yet to play it, but I want a 22" Paiste ride that is under $400 and that seems the best.
I have both the 2002 and the 900 22 inch ride. Go for the 900! More crashable and fun to play
love the way those cymbals sound! **
The 15 hats really pop out to me! But hey Rob, did you get your zst ears yet?? Mine came in yesterday! They're not too bad being $20
+Jordyn Perry Still waiting. They're still in transit.
Rob Brown to me they sound a little better with the foam tips. But the tips they come aren't bad tho.
Great review Rob. Thanks.
