J.D. Shaw's mellophone solo in '91 was just impeccable, along with the the way the entire ensemble handled the rubato and phrasing. If you don't nail the musical impression the drill doesn't matter.

Totally agree. I was on the field very close to J.D and it was absolutely impeccable and and just mesmerizing it was so beautiful.

91 PR is THE standard for this piece. I played this with Regiment in 96 as a part of our showcase set, and I loved hitting the hits every time.

91 Phantom does the best musical version. 2012 Phantom's drill has more velosity and demand. Both are outstanding!

Both PR versions are exceptional but I was on tour for 2012 and got to see the PR show all summer. The highlight was on Finals night. I watched from the second row after being invited by some PR staff to watch the show with them. Brings back so many feelings.

The 91 Phantom Regiment just sends chills up and down my spine, they KILLED it, especially with that company front. My band teacher had a video tape of the 91 Summer Music Games and I remember watching it over and over and over again. I'm surprised I didn't burn a damn hole in the cassette!!!!

Word! Best arrangement. Some of the others were less musically appropriate to the original (without naming names) but this was far and away a killer performance. Every heroic work like this has to have a moment when the brass just turns and parts the audiences' hair, and this was one, however quickly it passed. Bravo!

I agree Duane. The 91 Phantom Regiment was one of the first DCI shows I watched in high school. My band director was a big DCI fan and the whole marching band sat in the band room watching the 91 Summer Music Games. I was in awe of their talent. One of our instructors also marched playing trumpet for PR which was very cool. I went to some DCI shows in the late 90s and enjoyed them.

‘91 Regiment but Troopers deserve a well earned honorable mention. I loved the transition from the tango into Nessun and the overall subtlety. They took an iconic piece and made it their own.

The '91 Regiment show with out a doubt. I am a little biased because it's the first time I ever saw DCI live. You could feel the music through the musicians on that field ( the power of the G Horns). The best all around show of this clip. Phantom Director David St. Angel and everyone that was apart of that show made me a Phan for life.

'91 Phantom Regiment is the best for me. My high school marching band director showed us the Summer Music Games shows and I was hooked. I used to listen to the '92 SMG CDs a lot and would turn up the CD player at max volume when no one was home.
I hope everyone reading this is doing well and enjoying all the 90s DCI shows on CD and UA-cam. 😀

i saw 2012's Phantom at my first ever DCI show my Sophomore year.and it made me love DCI. Being a Saxophonest there wasnt really a spot for me without learning a new intrument so a fan i became.
The '91 has the grace and sticks to the opera, but '12 is just pure RAW emotion.
Vanguard took a ballad approach to it, while does sound lovely, not my cup of tea.
Troopers kind of went back the way of '91 mixed with Vanguard. Its this epic poem coming to its grand finale. Hats off on the final note cause DEAR GOD.
'12 will forever be one because of the moment shared with it. Stylistically Troopers have a damn good close second.

There is no one overall winner. In terms of the drill design Phantom from 2012 for sure. But for musicality and emotion I'm going to have to give it to '91 Phanton
