@@CasualCollisions I attempted my first ice dye after watching hours of your videos and created this (Alien Spine) pattern. i.redd.it/e2rqnj0spha51.jpg
I did a liquid dye with this style. One tied tight and one tied loose... really neat!!! I like your tutorials the best! I just don’t have enough dye to do ice- so I do them all liquid but I’m still loving it! Trying something new by squeezing some water after the liquid dye... trying to mock what the ice does. Thanks for sharing your technique!
great fold and dye pattern. the outcome is awesome and just like you said, alien-esk for sure. it's awesome that you can duplicate this effect. i have a bunch of practice shirts so i can learn some of your techniques. thanks for sharing the knowledge
Overall, health wise, my speech speed is normal though I still have issues with word selection hundreds of times a day. Most of the videos have at least a few retakes because of 5-10 second gaps of *nothing* happening as my brain just goes into "pause" mode as I'm unable to come up with the word(s) to use. I do feel I'm currently in a "good space" with the tie dye designs and I'm happily churning along making 3-6 videos a week to stockpile for slow weekly releases due to an upcoming "time out" I'll be forced to deal with. More details on that will be in a "channel update" in the next month or so. Until then - gotta keep making videos on new ideas, designs, and experiments. :)
Its a tie dye masterpiece . Id like to see if this effect can be created a second time, so Im going to try out this method and fingers crossed I hope it can be coz its my absolute favourite design now. Bravo mate
I've made quite a few of these and the results are reproducible. There is some variation of the spine with some shirts - since the "spikes" are dependent on the melt of the ice on the incline; but, overall, the design is the same.
Saw the word 👽, so had to check it out! Love it,esp.the coloration. Same way I like to color things,& want to try to dye a blonde or white haired wig in ombre style w/these colors..
How stunning! I’ve never tried ice dye, but I was just wondering what this would look like as a tie-dye when using a dipping method? What a gorgeous and precise design ☺️
Yes, it’s very cool. Literally, in terms of color selection..I am a big fan of blues and greens, especially the electric ones, the space ones, all. (My first spiral I got an electric green aura near a purple, who knows what I did to make it happen..) As a beginner I’m struggling with my color selections and placement..I’m learning that a great fold can be well, not ruined, but if you place the colors too..busily, it can detract from all the work you did folding and the intended pattern created by the fold. Here, your color selection and placement and method all came together to enhance each other. I’m betting most beginners like me look at their pile of colors and feel compelled to “add just another touch of..X” until the browns start happening!
Ugh..what did I just say? Did three shirts..spiral, ok, geodes, marginal, and thought “I can whip out this design!”..it looks like..a piece of hard striped candy that got stuck in the machine..I’m thinking of either bleaching as an experiment or putting it in the muck of my next batch. Worse..colors..selected..ever..! Mine, I mean..
i think this is probably the best one yet .. i really like and i am just learning ice dye and incline dye as well .. and do you mind if i give this a try
@@CasualCollisions thank you and you do wonderful work .. i love to see the things that make take a second longer look and this certainly does .. thank you for sharing your work, and your talent with the world
Yes; but, the finished result will not have the same look. Here's a video showing the different between ice dyeing and liquid dyeing a spiral: ua-cam.com/video/HgEpV905lpA/v-deo.html
I really like the look of this one a lot! I can't quite see what you mean about a 3D effect, but that might be because of it being on a computer screen. I totally see the exoskeleton though and I love the feathery meltiness of it. Moving forward with it, I'd like to see how it would look with one more color in it, starting with a vibrant violet family color at the center/as the 'spine,' just not as wide as the current blue one is. Then just continuing with the colors the way they are. Btw, I love your videos and now I think I've watched them all.....so make more! I have learned a ton from you, thanks!
If I would have known it was going to turn out like this, I would have likely chosen different and darker colors; but, the results on this one surprised me. Completely unexpected that this would results. I try to release a new video every week and I currently have 23 videos (and 3 "spares") batched up, so there should be a new tie dye video from me every Saturday through the end of this year.
How does the melt effect show up with the blue. It looks like you would have to tie it off at an angle but you don't. Is that a characteristic of an incline fold? And is an incline fold the fold you showed at the very beginning with the sleeve tucking?
The fold isn't an incline - the rack the fabric is on while being dyed is physically on an incline of 45° (or greater) so that when the ice melts, the dye flows at an angle into the shirt.
You can; but, it will just dilute the liquid dye and result in a more pastel final color. You could mix the liquid dyes up with less water to form a concentrated liquid and use a steeper angle. That would probably turn out quite interesting.
The overall layout will be similar; but, the results can be quite radically different. Here's a link to a liquid versus ice dyeing the same spiral: ua-cam.com/video/HgEpV905lpA/v-deo.html
I like this quite a bit, it looks like a grade school teacher alien. To get a earie(sp?) effect, if that's what you're going for it would need darker colors, but you know that.
You make it look so easy i have been doing tye dyes for about 5 years and still find working with shirts that are almost dry, i can work them better when i just ring them out by hand from the soda ash, and still have not go the fold with the inside the sleeves yet.. lol... but love your videos i will keep trying..
Thanks. Some people swear by bone-dry shirts, others only fold with wet shirts. When I started, I tried doing what everyone said was correct: dry shirts, dye over ice for ice dyeing, batching the shirts in a bag, rinsing until the water is clear, using dawn soap, etc. It's endless. I fold and dye with the material damp, usually place ice over dye (though I will do the opposite for specific effects), never bag anything, rinse for 2-4 minutes *max*, don't use any special soap, etc. I do what works for me - be it what's easier, what results in the "look" I prefer, etc. The more people experiment with what works best for them, the more options everyone else can enjoy when something really creative springs up from those experiments. In case you haven't seen it, here's the link to the fold with the sleeves inside detail video: ua-cam.com/video/6VsKeM56QKM/v-deo.html
The results between ice and liquid dye are quite different. Here's a video that'll give you a better idea: ua-cam.com/video/HgEpV905lpA/v-deo.html In the case of incline dyes, the difference will be even greater - the ice melting slowly will create a more distinct "slide" of the colors than that of liquid.
I love this pattern! I bet it would look nice in shades of purple to red. Thank you for your videos, I am a beginner. I have a challenge for you, OD and black crumple cammo with a vibrant centered red, orange, and yellow nuclear explosion mushroom cloud. I think you could pull it off 🙂
If the dye pattern is complex - such as the sawtooth videos I'm beginning to post - I only do a single-sided dye with an extra soda ash application and ice application. The results will already be complex and richly saturated, so there's no need to flip and dye on the opposite side. I also mostly do single-sided dyes with inclines. This is more due to how much dye remains on the metal racks I use that would need to be cleaned/replaced before flipping the material. Again, since the results are generally more complex due to the incline, there's not really a need to flip the material over. With that said - I will be posting a video showing alternatives to that sometime within the next few months.
When ice dyeing the colors that are mixes of other colors separate into their constituents and those blend with others creating effects not possible w liquid dyes. Some yellows are primaries with no additions. Do an ice dye color test of all your colors..you’ll see which ones split, what their auras look like..
What John Cspine said. There are 22 Procion "primary" dyes. From those primary dyes, the distributers (Dharma, Custom Colours, Grateful Dyes, etc.) create their own additional custom dyes. Some are the same or very similar between distributers, others are radically different. The primary dyes do not split since they contain a single color dye - such as Lemon Yellow, Turquoise, and Fuchsia Red from Dharma. But, other colors that are created from the 22 Procion primary dyes will split into their corresponding components when ice dyed. Some colors contain a very large number of primary dyes. That's why colors like Better Black will split into greens, yellow, blues, violets, etc. when ice dyed.
Yes, it will have a more smooth color transition that shows less "splitting" and a more organic/smooth result if you place the dye on top of the ice. That's not a method I generally use because I care more about dye placement in most designs; but, for an incline, dye on top of the ice usually has a more pleasing result.
Incline dyes don't work as well when ice dyeing. You could try a much more extreme angle/elevation while liquid dyeing; but, the color splitting will not occur. Here's a video that shows the difference between a liquid and ice dyed pattern: ua-cam.com/video/HgEpV905lpA/v-deo.html
@@CasualCollisions Thank you for the help. We are excited to try this method. Tie dye has been one of the things keeping my family sane during Covid-19. I will share I results.
I think I've made 2 long sleeve shirts in the past 5 years... It simply not something I wear because I don't like things on my arms and Winter is a season that lasts 1 week a year. ;) With that said, I'd probably pull them down the full length of the shirt to pull the full length of the pattern into the arms.
I mostly use Gildan G200 shirts because of how well the dye bonds with the fibers, allowing super-saturated colors. But, they're not soft and some people do not like the fit. I use Anvil 980 shirts when I want a "soft" shirt. They don't have the saturation that the Gildan G200 shirts do; but, they're very comfortable, soft shirts.
There are 22 Procion "primary" dyes. From those primary dyes, the distributers (Dharma, Custom Colours, Grateful Dyes, etc.) create their own additional custom dyes. Some are the same or very similar between distributers, others are radically different. Are you remembering to pull the sleeves in? So like it's not just a fold in half, you fold in half the wrong way so the sleeves are in the center of the shirt. Then you pull the bottom sleeve even with the top sleeve. Then you reset it to look like you only folded it in half. He kind of explains that in the start of the video. He mentions he's got a video that will teach that technique.
Thank you for this video! I tried this out but I got more of a "Tiger's strips" effect instead 😆 I think I messed up on the folding or could be the bottle dye?
Liquid dye will have different results than that of ice dyeing - sometimes minor, sometimes more significant. Here's a video showing an example: ua-cam.com/video/HgEpV905lpA/v-deo.html

@@CasualCollisions Yes this makes so much more sense thank you so so much

With the 'one sided' is just the pattern itself a one sided situation or what should you look for when knowing not to flip and add more ice/dye?

That's why colors like Better Black will split into greens, yellow, blues, violets, etc. when ice dyed.
I should have read the comments first!! I had the same question. Disregard my original comment!
Very nice! I like the color gradient you got. Why did you put the dye on top of the ice instead of under? Does the color break more?
Yes, it will have a more smooth color transition that shows less "splitting" and a more organic/smooth result if you place the dye on top of the ice. That's not a method I generally use because I care more about dye placement in most designs; but, for an incline, dye on top of the ice usually has a more pleasing result.
Do you absolutely need the ice ? Or can do w/o ice
Incline dyes don't work as well when ice dyeing. You could try a much more extreme angle/elevation while liquid dyeing; but, the color splitting will not occur.

I use Anvil 980 shirts when I want a "soft" shirt. They don't have the saturation that the Gildan G200 shirts do; but, they're very comfortable, soft shirts.
Will this shirt be sold on your shop soon?
I think my son took possession of this one.
@@CasualCollisions aww man😊😊
This is gorgeous! When you say the daffodil will split, what does that mean?
I've tried this 2 times, and my pattern comes out like an x. Is it possible I'm starting my folds from wrong side, or to steep and angle?
Are you remembering to pull the sleeves in? So like it's not just a fold in half, you fold in half the wrong way so the sleeves are in the center of the shirt. Then you pull the bottom sleeve even with the top sleeve. Then you reset it to look like you only folded it in half. He kind of explains that in the start of the video. He mentions he's got a video that will teach that technique.
I’m on way home to try

Much thanks!
