I lived in Portland, OR, for 31 years. Winco changed names and buildings 3 times and I followed them wherever they moved. Hands down the best place to get groceries except, as you said, meat. I bought meat from Safeway and Fred Meyers (Kroger). After 5 years retired in Vicksburg, MS, my two sisters and I are ready to move back to the Portland metro area. Whenever we visit, Winco is my first stop. Love that store. Hoping to move back within a year.
My wife and I typically spend about $60 a week on groceries, and there have been some weeks where we’ve spent as little as $50. We eat a predominantly plant based diet, so we buy lots of beans and lentils. Occasionally we’ll buy a chicken if it’s a loss leader or on sale, but it’s mostly fresh veggies and fruits. And it’s such a healthy way to eat too.
I just went to Winco today and bought a 25 lb bag of white rice for $18.48. That will last my family for months, and we eat a lot of rice! I don’t go to Winco often but it sure helps my overall grocery budget to stock up there once in a while.
I’m so excited. We’re moving from Florida to Arizona soon and there is a WinCo nearby. I’m going to be able to eat healthy and save money compared to grocery shopping here.
One way we get an expensive protein is to watch for the full pork loin to go on sale and then we cut it into our own pork chops and freeze it in portions. This is been a huge savings over buying pre-cut pork chops. The little bits and pieces by put it in a separate bag and we use for stirfry.
I ear raw for about 80 to 100 a week. That's organic watermelon grapes, cantaloupe. Not all I eat is organic the lemons, grapefruit, avocado is not. Yes I juice so it's more. Getting my lymphatic going juice and high fruits....I don't get sick anymore Bonus the whole family will be down and I'm totally fine.
Sorry this just doesn’t fly in NYC. And I shop the sales and go to multiple stores. A bag of potatoes like the one you shopped at Winco is between $4.99 to $9.99 depending on the time of year. And I’m not even exaggerating.
Oklahoma girl here!! I LOVE Crest Foods!!! Nick’s Picks are the discounted foods for the duration… it could be a week or a month +. BUT the stores we rotate through here are: Crest, Sam’s, Costco, once in a while: walmart, sprouts, & winco (when we’re close to it, unfortunately they don’t have one in Edmond & unless we’re close by a winco for some other reason other than groceries, we don’t get to shop there).
Wegmans is such a nice store with a large variety- their produce is amazing and priced well! I was shocked. If you aren’t careful you can overspend because they have all the fancy cheeses and a huge gluten free section and all the ready made foods etc… We moved from Oregon where WINCO is a staple- but I always think of them as bottom barrel not quality at all. Once we had to go gluten free I quit shopping at WINCO completely because their selection wasn’t good. Now we have ALDI near and I was excited but again not great for gluten free. Their cheese is a good price… and the produce, even organic. But we typically do better at the local farms.

They are the biggest seller of Smithfield Ham in Texas. Stock special cuts of beef for our market. When was the last time you bought cube steak to make Salisbury Steak or to chicken fried.
In Illinois and Wisconsin, we have Woodman's which is similar to Winco. I don't shop there often but plan to see if they have a bulk section for oatmeal. My husband loves steel cut oats in the instant pot.
I live too far east foe Winco but I shop at Aldi’s and we ordered a 1/2 cow from a farmer. Large upfront cost but it lasts 6 months and we supplement with the farmers market
I love grocery shopping too. I shop for groceries at Food Lion, Aldi, Lidl and Bylers. Bylers is a discounted grocery store in my area. I sometimes go to Costco with my daughter.
Because I live in N. Idaho I choose a Kroger store. Not the least expensive over all. They do have good sales and some mark downs, digital coupons. Nicely payed out. Nice check out staff.
My budget for my household of 2 each month is only $400, and i can even go lower than that. So the over $900 for a family of 4 is extremely generous. Last month we spent about $250. Eating out only twice.
😱 $970 on the thrifty plan is $242 per person, per month. My grocery budget for just me is $151.66 per month! I mostly shop Walmart and Smith’s aka Fry’s. No WinCo, Costco, or any other discount stores in my small town. The closet are 100 miles away.
Im in IA, border NE, and my cheapest are walmart and aldi. Super Saver doesnt even always beat walmart. Everything else is expensive. Especially the health food type stores in the city. We spend about $1100-1400 a month including house and cat items because my kids have feeding disorders. In fact we are an entire ND family, and my husband does take his lunch (soldier)
I about cried when I saw the amount for USDA food calculations...I have 50 buck a month for 3 people. I couldn't imagine being able to shop with as much as these amounts were
Winco sounds like sav-a-lot which is what we have here in indiana. We also have stores that buy returned boxes (usually the outside box not the individual box you're buying) that are cut or dented. Some people used to call them crash and dent store but now a days the items you get in these stores aren't dented. The last one I visited I picked up 2 flats of strawberries for $1 a flat. Made enough jelly for my family of 6 (+ some) till the next strawberry season.
I love HEB ❤ i was just there yesterday and their meal deal right now with the smoked sausage...you have to buy 2 of them but if you get the regular its $6.99 each BUT you literally get 6 meals out of them if you separate the sausage and put it in the freezer.
We just dropped my daughter off in Idaho for college and I believe this will help her eat healthy on her very tight budget. She will just need to find someone to take her to a winco, as she has no car
i garden and supplement my bill by that and stocking up and going to farmers markets and orchards. I got corn on sale for .20 an ear and stocked up buying 20 to freeze and then bought 20 more at the orchard later in the month. I can, dry, dehydrate, freeze and preserrve herbs in butter, etc. I haven't bought herbs in years. I have maybe have only bought 5 heads of lettuce this whole year and I eat salads constantly. I have cold frames I put in and have been growing salad greens intensely as cut and come again. I have berry bushes also. and a grape vine. I shop local if I can when things are fresh during the summer. It's just me but i put up a lot of food and share with others who are not as fortunate. I have put up over 20 oounds of just strawberries this year. I have all kinds of things frozen. I only shop sales, period and stock up. I have a good sized pantry and have since before Covid, we saw it coming at work. When Krogers runs sales adds you can buy up to 5 at that price and that's what I do. They also run sales on meat, example 10 thick cut pork chops for 10.00. I get the packs and split them up. When they run London Broils or pork roasts on sale I get those also and freeze. At one point I had 5+ in the freezer I had bought for less than 9.00 and the prices went to 20-30! it was insane. The sales cycle about every two months and things like bagged cheese for .99 or 1.50 last until the next sales usually. They also offer gas points so i save money that way also. They will often offer free products that i get or coupons for say 20.00 off orders of 100 or more and i take advantage of that or double triple, quad points for gas. My last order with the sales I SAVED 153.00! The cashiers were shocked! lol Feels good. love your videos, they give me new ideas! Keep up the good work!
Smith’s (Kroger) and Sam’s are my favorite stores. I get the best value from those two stores. If Walmart happens to have a lower price, I go there when I make the trip to Sam’s since they share a parking lot. 😁 I also appreciate the Kroger fuel points.
I priced compared between Winco and Walmart recently. I found Winco to be less expensive on produce and bulk items, but generally everything else is slightly less at Walmart.
I love Winco! I always buy my spices in the bulk bins and the produce is cheap and fresh. You have to know your prices on meat. I bought boneless skinless chicken breast for $1.49 lb a couple weeks ago. It was $1.88 lb this week, which is still cheaper than most stores. Steak is usually too expensive to buy there. I'm so glad they are expanding to other states now.
I Live in Wa State there’s this one item that i’ve gotten from my local Winco way prior to and after the pandemic and items that I have gotten I kid you not never have gone up in Price witch is simply amazing, and due to the rising cost of food it’s a no-brainer!!!

I couldn't imagine being able to shop with as much as these amounts were
You might try going to food pantries and checking the churches around in your area. I am sure that you can get lots of ways to boost your food budget.
My favorite grocery store is Safeway and Fred Myers
Texas here! Winco is my favorite store to do my major grocery shopping. But, I still shop the sales at a couple of other stores.
I love Winco!! I'm m from Oregon so we have quite a few here.
HEB at the Alon shopping center in San Antonio was nirvana for me. I’m in Philly now. The king of Prussia wegman’s is pretty sweet.
Loved Winco when we were in California. Now I love H‑E‑B here in Texas. Great store
I love HEB ❤ i was just there yesterday and their meal deal right now with the smoked sausage...you have to buy 2 of them but if you get the regular its $6.99 each BUT you literally get 6 meals out of them if you separate the sausage and put it in the freezer.
I spend about $600 for a family of four every month, and we eat very well. I wish the nearest Winco wasn't in Fort Worth!
I love ur videos! Encouraging frugality, no waste is the way to go!
I drive an hour for our WinCo here in Oklahoma but it's definitely worth it I hate shopping anywhere else
Our government is so clueless.
Thrifty is not $200+/week for groceries.
Wow, I’m on the super thrift plan! We spend $600 or less a month for my family of 5 (3 teens!). We eat very healthy.
We just dropped my daughter off in Idaho for college and I believe this will help her eat healthy on her very tight budget. She will just need to find someone to take her to a winco, as she has no car
Favorite grocery store is definitely Aldi! It saves me tons of money.
Great video Christine, as always!!!
I love WinnCo. When I visited my Daughter in Temecula CA. She lived there and hated it. I was like a kid in a candy store!!
i garden and supplement my bill by that and stocking up and going to farmers markets and orchards.
Great video! Thanks!
I have a store similar to this here in Georgia
I remember when WinCo was Cub Foods!! Lol my favorite store
WinCo is our favorite!
Smith’s (Kroger) and Sam’s are my favorite stores. I get the best value from those two stores. If Walmart happens to have a lower price, I go there when I make the trip to Sam’s since they share a parking lot. 😁 I also appreciate the Kroger fuel points.
I LOVE WINCO
i love my winco so much its such a good budget store
I have a Winco fairly near to me. I love it! I find their meats to be perfectly fine!
Thank You for video! Unfortunately I live in NC no WINCO in my area, but still enjoyed this video. Thank You for all you do😊
Wisconsin had Woodman’s, seems similar to WinCo. Employee owned.
I use the sale items from the sale adds and plan my meals around the sales.
I priced compared between Winco and Walmart recently. I found Winco to be less expensive on produce and bulk items, but generally everything else is slightly less at Walmart.
Aldi is my favorite grocery store, hands down.
My favorite store is HEB!
I moved from WA to IL last year and miss Winco and Grocery Outlet.
Potato and black bean garlic tacos? Where is this video/recipe? Sounds like a delicious meal I’d love to try.
yepppppp Winco and Aldi are my staples....
I Live in Wa State there’s this one item that i’ve gotten from my local Winco way prior to and after the pandemic and items that I have gotten I kid you not never have gone up in Price witch is simply amazing, and due to the rising cost of food it’s a no-brainer!!!
