I have noticed that people who "Just can't save money on groceries" are NOT buying food. They buy a dopamine hit ("I can't do without my Oreos!") or, they are buying convenience. I actually had an acquaintance who flatly refused to visit two or three different grocery stores to scout out the best deals. The irony: she had the nerve to say that to ME, who lives in a snowy four-season climate, and can no longer drive (vision issues) and have to shop on a bicycle. Somehow, I still manage to make the mile-and-a-half long circuit between the Farmer's Market, Kroger, Dollar Tree, and Walmart. Then, when the bargains are really good, I hit the Sprouts, Trader Joe's, Target, and Costco clump of stores on the other side of town and use Uber to get there (no bike lanes on that side of town). I STILL save more money, even after paying for Uber! I don't really care what choices anybody else makes, TBH. But you should be clear: when you buy name brand items and limit shopping because "it's too much trouble" to shop at different stores; you're buying a dopamine hit or convenience, NOT food! Weirdest food combination when I found boneless skinless chicken thighs for 99 cents a pound and an entire case of missing label canned goods for pennies on the dollar. When I was checking out the cashier commented, "Feeding the freezer, huh?" Yes, yes I am. Most of the canned goods were fine, they all ended up in soups. I feasted on my favorite cut of chicken for months!

I love to cook, but I also teach. I've learned over the years that during the semester I will actually save more money if I keep some convenience things on hand - it saves me from eating out or ordering delivery so often. But I'm also fairly cheap, and convenience foods tend to have long shelf/freezer lives, so I do shop the sales for those. I'm sure my cart looks insane in any given trip, but it's just buying what is on sale and knowing I will gradually eat those 8 boxes of mac&cheese or 5 boxes of cereal over the coming months. The only name-brand items I care about are Kraft mac&cheese and Heinz ketchup - I taste a difference! But I also don't pay full price on either.

    • @lindacgrace2973
      @lindacgrace2973 5 місяців тому +3

@@wjb-wi6dt Agreed! A frozen pizza (purchased on sale) is still one heck of a lot better than calling out for pizza delivery! I also keep some convenience foods on hand for those days when I can't be bothered. But I am honest about it and don't claim that I'm buying food. At that point, I'm buying convenience. Sometimes that tiny bit of convenience is the difference between a home made meal and take-out, so I'm still ahead. But you should be clear about what you're paying for. Sounds like you are very clear. A box of Kraft Mac & Cheese that saves you from take-out is still a great deal. I am a retired middle-grades teacher, specialised in twice exceptional students. What grade do you teach?

Not my weirdest checkout, but I'll tell you one about an old boss of mine. He and I lived within a two mile radius of each other. We each had our own individual but same chain neighborhood grocery store. One day I caught him in the parking lot of my neighborhood store (either too embarrassed to do so in his own, or perhaps he had already been at his?) He had literally wiped out my store of his preferred bran cereal (I am talking a cartful of 20+ boxes). Apparently they were on sale with no limit. He used it in his yogurt every morning as his breakfast. How do I know? He brought his breakfast to work every morning. He was definitely a creature of habit with his breakfast and snacks.

Yearrrrs ago the airline did promos for miles on cereal boxes, so with sales on double coupon days I would take my college roommate and buy like 25 boxes of cereal or nutrigrain bars at a time, then go home and mail in all the coupons. 😂 It paid off because I saved those miles and eventually used for my honeymoon!

I have committed to eating healthier, so no grains, dairy and not a lot of fruits. I eat mostly protein and veggies. I also only eat 50 carbs a day. I feel better! My lab numbers are improving. Aldi has been a Godsend for me with respect to vegetables. Eating healthy is more expensive in the beginning, but once you are cutting out all the sugars in our food, you actually end up spending less. I try to take advantage of meat sales and/or markdowns. I have a small deep freeze, so I can take advantage. I also don't eat potatoes. I thought I would really miss those, but I don't! In the 90s and 2000s, I was able to get a lot of food free by combining coupons and loss leader sales. Even Target let you put coupon overage toward other purchases to make that item free. Then extreme couponing came on tv and manufacturers and stores changed policy. A lot of stuff can still be free, but you have to be willing to use digital coupons and multiple rebate sites. My next salad will include some new leaves from the centre of dandelions, miner’s lettuce and chickweed. It’s too early for chives to be up. Sooooo my cart usually doesn't have stuff for an actual meal. I'm there stocking up on items I am running out of. I already have the protein and canned goods in my stockpile. And whatever else I need for a recipe.

Was he complaining about the price? It didn't really seem like that to me.
Beans! Best and cheapest protein. You buy 1lb and it gets heavier and expands when you cook it, not shrinks like meat!

I have to say my weirdest check out was also cereal. I had about 10 boxes of cereal because they were really cheap and everyone kept saying wow you must have a big family and I was like no I just have one giant toddler; my husband!

Cat food was on sale with a fuel saver attached a while back, and I have 2 spoiled cats. My weirdest checkout was 40 cans of cat food, plus 1 onion. I think the onion was what confused people - I bought all my other stuff at another store, but their onions were lousy quality so grabbed that one thing for me.

We invest in protien from a local butcher so my grocery hauls are usually veggie and grain oriented. Plus I follow Christine's advice and shop my pantry so it's rare that I'm buying every ingredient I need for a meal at one time. No clue what my weirdest checkout has been but it's fun reading the comments.

yeah, I get what you're saying. But grocery shopping is indeed way up there. we all should have a grocery budget, but you don't get much for 50 dollars. It adds up fast, even getting only the bare minimum stuff. I continue to be amazed at how much I drop at the store when I go. Even at Aldi. Last time I was there I dropped almost 80, but I was shopping for hosting Christmas dinner, so I did get things I wouldn't normally get. But still. food is way up, and there is nothing wrong with pointing out the outrageous prices we are being charged. if consumers don't speak up, we will continue paying too much

I appreciate what you’re doing, but I think we’re missing the point of these “shocking” grocery receipts- we didn’t used to have to try this hard.
There’s a giant income category that didn’t used to have to think about store brand vs name brand.
Now, I grew up having to be frugal, blessedly spent a good 15 years not needing a grocery budget and now I’m using all my old skills again (it’s like riding a bicycle 😂).
But just because my family eats great doesn’t mean I’m not ticked off at the responsible parties.
And this is totally a stir fry recipe plus a couple random list items.

I knew a family of 6 kids who did the cereal thing at Christmas...it was the early 90s. I don't think they had much money.. but I can't imagine buying 6 different cereals at each grocery shop. So it was a treat for them at Christmas to get their fave cereal lol

    My thinking was
    Yogurt banana honey breakfast
    Salad lunch
Shrimp and snow pea stir fry
So $50 for ONE days food maybe 2 od you eat the exact same meals
    Who planned that cart???
    Who buys $6 noodles?
    It's awful.
We need to remember your time is worth something too. I am not going to 2 different stores to save $2.
I have found ordering groceries for delivery or pickup really helps my grocery bill because there is no impulse shopping. Unfortunately they have 17 yr Olds doing the shopping so sometimes the substituted items are hysterical.
For lemonade you can buy frozen but it's obviously from concentrate. Simply is my favorite brand. But it's a one of those things I only buy once in awhile for my husband. The sugar though is awful. He drinks those cran- whatever juices too and they are so full of sugar you may as well just drink a sprite.

I buy only discounted &/or sale items only except for the odd other random ingredients for food + everything else we may purchase like gas, etc is over the top expensive!!
I’m almost out of coffee & I’m not going to buy anymore until my tea stash is gone cause decaf coffee is $$🍁🇨🇦

I live in Charlotte NC area and discount stores outside of the city are non existent. I mean I have two shops Walmart and Food Lion. Food is stupid expensive. I lament that my late grandmother could have two carts full of meat, veggies, etc and pay less than $200. I have like half a cart at $60+. She was feeding at least 10 people. I am just trying to feed 4. =/

I once bought 4 cases of noodles, 4 different types of dry noodles all at one time. It was back in good ole days the noodles were .35 cents a bag. Back then people didn't stock up on sales they just bought one or two of the item. My husband thought I was crazy, I then went to Walmart and bought some big plastic totes. That stack of noodle totes lasted us two years, we were in the middle of the pandemic when we started running low again. I still do this, if something is really on sale I figure out how much of that product we can eat in a year, and buy that amount. Now, that our income has been cut by almost 3/4 my grocery bill is 20.00 every two weeks, It's usually a splurge like sour cream, something I can't long term store or keeps for very long. This week we went to burger king, the price was over 20.00 for the two of us to have just a burger and fries. To save even more money now that the heat is on the lights are off. Go to bed early wake up early. Use night lights, no t.v. we sit in the dark and talk a lot.
