Today I will show you the process of creating a very unusual Taig CNC lathe. You will see the process of assembling and turning the part. Enjoy watching!
If my father had seen this he would have feinted with envy! Around 1955 he set up a one-man precision engineering shop in our basement. He took on production runs of small components. One contract was to produce many thousands of tapered fittings to be soldered onto the ends of copper tube used in industrial fire sprinkler systems. He adapted a small capstan lathe to automatic operation, using sequenced pneumatic cylinders. It was a bit cantankerous until it was warmed up, and calibrated... after that it hissed, sneezed, and clunked, filling box after box with goodies! A stepper motor and controller would have been like something out of a Buck Rogers sci-fi movie! Time moves on... 😉

I am delighted to see the machine components and where assembly is critical to function. Thank you for posting. At my workbench, I am having fun with a quite ancient 1935 South bend C model. But which came with some wear as component, thus lessened precision...but very fun, very amusing to toolbar end use as 1 meter bed potential to project. At the needs to typical mechanical function, soft component as brass, al are fine to needs. So I now plan to simply expand my bench with some very similar build. And take notice as where rigid mounting, light, various tool component storage...are among first build consider to project. As intended to work function. Nice work. I've seen people that upgrade their Dremel manual lathe with electronics so that it can run like an automatic mill. Very inspiring to see! Those Dremel mills aren't that expensive and they are great for beginners.
This was an excellent video. I love your new machine. We use collets at work. My job is to laser hydraulic parts. We have another machine called a Pinstamper. It's like an engraver. So we use the collets to hold the parts to be engraved. P.S. I figured out how to change the collets all by myself. No one else knew how. ☺️ Yay me!
The great advantage of an extra long cross slide is you can use it as a turret, there's enough space to mount multiple tools with clearance, even drill chucks.
@@Eluderatnight At work I use a Webster and Bennett boring mill with a 5 position turret, the boring bar permanently mounted on it is about 4 foot long, which means you have to move the slide all the way to one side to get the clearance to rotate the turret. It's a beast of a machine, you can take a 1/2 inch cut and barely notice. The thing I don't like about it, is the slowest speed (5 RPM) is one notch away from the highest speed - 150 RPM, and you don't want a 350kg casting spinning that fast when you're still truing it up.
2:14 My concern with your coupler is that there is no allowance for misalignment of the motor to the lead screw. Unless your alignment is perfect, you may very well end up with something in there, like your bearings, wearing out prematurely. Fascinating build; thank you very much for your video.
Nice modification of Taig Turn, however Taig sold Turn CNC ready version. I like that you use Servo Motor, and Tool made from Milling attachment of Taig Mini.

I have this mill and the plastic "bushings" between the motors and the lead screw are made from the plastic tubes that holds the ink for a bic style pen. Just find an empty pen and cut up the tube into pieces. I don't think your brass pins are going to have enough play and could wear out that bearing faster than it should.

For the handle, you should have made it turn in your fingers so that it is easier to turn. I was a machinist for 20 years, I made everything, so I enjoy your craftsmanship

Now, put the spindle assembly on the Z axis, only allow the table to move on the X axis, put a wall between the spindle and the tooling, with another small collet for the spindle to feed the bar stock through (spoiler alert we call it a guide bushing), and boom, you have a Swiss lathe
I love these small cnc machines.. needs bar feeder and bar puller vertical Zed axis maybe gang tool arrangement? 5 axis DIY "Pocket NC" would be awesome
@@knoopx : I think "Yu Toob" was suggesting continuing to develop this machine into a Do-It-Yourself Pocket NC. It certainly is a good base for such a project.
@@flosscapThis isn't exactly the same as a TaigTurn. TaigTurn lathes do not have the additional vertical axis. (They also cost more.) The machine is somewhat unique.
@@flosscap I'm not talking about the Taig part. I'm talking about the vertical mount that has stepper on top of it. It's direction of movement is perpendicular to the axis of the Taig and the bed. I'm not sure if you'd call it Z or not.
Wait, why not convert the sherlines into cnc? They sell kits to convert directly from Sherline, the company. Great work regardless! Would love to see the wiring and software usage!
He mentioned at the beginning of the video the difficulties he had just getting the base machine that he started with. If he's in a country that the US restricts exports to, getting the conversion kit would probably be a huge headache for him

And yes, Sherline sets are freely sold here, but they are just a set of children's toys, compared to the parts in the author's video. If you buy something from the more serious Sherline's series, you will lose about six times in terms of price/quality.

It's certainly far from being the only one of its kind. Oh, including the tiny dimensions and lack of rigidity? If you take that into consideration, then yes... that makes it sort of unique.

Well, that is certainly the longest cross slide I have seen on a lathe. You can set that up with a huge number of gang tools. Very Nice!

They call it a "gang lathe". Turret is when its on a spinning wheel of tools attached to the tailstock or a atc axis.

I have seen this setup before on most DIY CNC lathes as the cross slide will hold more than one tool but you went and bought stuff from sherline.
