Homemade Timber Trailer PROPER TEST
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 лис 2022
- Testing homemade 4x4 timber trailer with Forstman hydraulic crane by hauling huge dried up spruce and branches out of the forest. This is a real back saver. It is not as efficient as proper forwarders but is perfect for private use.
Things I want to change or add:
1) replace the separate hydraulic power pack with on-board hydraulics on the UTV;
2) add a telescopic section to the boom to make the work radius bigger
3) find a solution to the trailer vs UTV different turning circles and thus binding of the PTO shaft when sharply cornering
4) add more log dogs to better facilitate branch hauling
5) automatic gearbox on the UTV to make driving easier

Nice timber trailer Donn 👍🙂 It looks like it works really well!
There’s an amazing amount fo design and planning that goes into building something like this, plus the time it takes to actually Fab the entire project.
Not only that you also are the camera man and editor as well 👍 Nice work man!
Cheers man!
Maybe a future project for your awesome channel.

This should shut up all the naysayers who thought it wasn't gonna work. It's a beast.
I agree!
This is UA-cam, you’ll never shut the naysayers up! 🫣😂😂
But what about the pto drive? Havent seen it work yet.
The moveable tow bar really enables the trailer steering round obstacles.
The winch comes almost as handy as the crane. They both save your back. Splendid word, Donn!
Mate for a one man operation doing what you did i dont think i saw you sweating at all. You weren’t struggling. I would count that operation as a great success. Bravo from Victoria Australia
I'd love to see a bit of PTO action, even if it was just an empty trailer though some mud. Awesome trailer anyway!
This whole series was an absolute pleasure to watch! Your turning into quite the fabricator Sir Donn..
It's always a pleasure to see you working with the "machines" you built ! Congratulations !!
Super impressive Donn. Can’t believe the lifting capacity of the crane, when I saw that first log, I thought; no way will that be lifted, but then I was proved wrong. Such a good job, you deserve all the success in the world.
Best wishes from Australia.
dead dry pine is incredibly light.
A lot of hard work, blood sweat and tears obviously went into these builds and the results are vlearly evident...massive well done! I agree with your assessment of upgrades but would also add rear (boom) lighting (unless this already exists and I havent been able to see it)
Nice job Donn 👍 Your a one man operation. Single seat buggy and every part of the loading process done by yourself. No one else to rely on. I like it
I'm glad to see you enjoying the fruits of your labor, the trailer build is a great series. Enjoy your work and Family too.
Awesome project! Works really well and what impress me its how stable that trailer is, moving such big logs compare to trailer size and its not even try to tip or lean to any side, really nice balance. 🙂👍
Fantastic machine. It was a joy to follow you on this project. Thanks
mate you've got my subscription because your projects are proper cool and genius! the fact that you make them all yourself just makes it even better and I'm proper impressed!
So Awesome to see everything in Action and working in harmony.
Super Job Donn.👍🏻🌟
How gratifying it must be to design and build such an amazing machine! Well done!!
wonderfull to see it "completed". great work
Impressive! It works way better than I was expecting. Great job.
Donn, it has been a joy to watch this UTV and Trailer Build.
I have really enjoyed this build. Nice to see it rocking.
The hydraulic trailer steering is the ticket for navigating around trees on a narrow trail! My back is asking why we don't have a cherry picker like Donn's. The boom winch is a real labor saver especially changing the winch angle on the fly.
That trailer truly is a premium bit of craftsmanship! Sure worked well on branch removal! Those can be a pain. Looking forward to seeing how well is does when up against fresh wet hardwood logs.
It's a beautiful build. Guess there always be place for improvements but You made it your self and that is what counts. Let the videos flow through the next build. Thanks.
Awesome, Donn! It is doing it! I think once you refine your technique, it will go smooth and flawless. I am impressed that lifted those huge tree trunks! It seems to be at its capacity limit but it moved them. Someone is going to be warm and toasty this winter!
Very good job. I think its your best build yet.
Hi Donn, fantastic pieces of machinery you have built. Many thanks from Nr Liverpool.
Amazing capability! Well done Sir!
I've gotta say that is cool as (you know what...) and the fact you made it all your self is wicked man!
It looks like it is working just like you wanted it to. Well done 👍
Next is a huge chipper for all those branches.
The trailer works great. Great saw logs out of that first tree.
Impressive! The total amount of work is colossal! But the result is, as usual, perfection. Thanks for your very detailed and well tied together videos. Peace. 👏👍
Amazing build and engineering skills. This will make your life a lot easier and save your back and legs for old age. Congrats!!
This is a fantastic homemade timber truck! I'm very impressed!
It must be very good feeling seeing and actually using the grapple and trailor and ATV that u have been sweating and working for so long on. I can just imagine that sense of accomplishment you must be feeling right now. Congratulations! You have pulled it off big time👌
Awesome job my dude.. This self loader is amazing. Those were some nice logs you picked up. Definitely can't wait to see all those wheels turning. I know you don't need them yet but winter is coming. Would love to see more videos like this one.. Appreciate it 🙏🏽.
Awesome machine, that steerable hitch is genius!
I don’t know what to say. Awesome comes to mind. Mass market. People would buy this. Does the work of 4 to 6 men easily. Incredible. Lifting the big logs causes some flex here and there and I wonder if repeated use would cause some weld failure at the base of the arm. Its a great machine. I didn’t think that grapple would handle those logs. Good job.
I defiinitely envy you all the stuff made by yourself and your skills to manufacture them in such of professional way. Thumb up!!!
That things like a tank! Well done good sir!
Makes work a whole lot easier, job well done...
Well done superb practical result
Despite the openwork of the whole structure, I was very surprised how easily it copes with heavy logs. Bravo to the hands of the master). With uv.
Hell of a machine! Awesome work!
Man, you made this forest monster!
Super impressed with your work buddy, so cool to see it in action. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😁👍🏻
The video we've all been waiting for! Works great by the looks of it. You can move a lot of timber with that machine, very impressive. Must be very rewarding to see a machine you have designed and built yourself work that well. Thank you for sharing.
Greetings from the Netherlands, Mark
@@sjoemie_himself Ga kijken !
Donn. You are the best DYS man on UA-cam.
Verry cool.
Thanks.
You are the King of the steel
That's a great rig you built, Amazing.
What an amazing combo. Every part is so well made and designed for the task. With this setup you must be able to work longer or more days without killing your body. Only thing letting the setup down is that saw. Time for a bigger one?
Maybe partner up with one of the chainsaw hot-rodding and porting channels.
Just buy you self a Husqvarna my friend that will fix everything
@@joesellersjr6817 Stihl chainsaws are also good. Considering he already has a stihl, it may be easier to just get a larger stihl, as it will feel more familiar and you can probably have some overlap on spare parts.
Great job and works really well 👍🏻 the only negative thing I would say when you are working alone and you have strain on a log with the winch start cutting the branches from the top of the log just if the winch suddenly pulls the log you might get knocked over and get injured. Keep up the good work and the projects coming 👍🏻👍🏻
Awesome . Looks like it works very well . Great job .
Pretty Good.
* thanks for sharing Donn. Look forward to more.
A very successful build awesome! Be proud take care be safe
I've played enough farm simulator to know and appreciate how good the physics on Donn's timber trailer are. That crane is absolutely realistic. 😁 Excellent job 😁😁
Nice work. a Timber trailer who all timberjack are dream to have.
Pleasure to see how the channel has grown over the years ... all the best from Arkansas, USA!
Pretty impressive Donn. Awesome build for sure. Take care.
🇩🇪 very good 👍
The work has been worthwhile💪👍👍👍
Greetings from North-West Germany
That works really well!
That thing is AWESOME ! ! ! I must have missed that cool winch on the boom for skidding logs. That's handy. It's a shame that the all-wheel drive aspect doesn't come across in the video but I'm sure that is the only thing that let you haul out those huge loads so easily. Great job!
What an amazing machine! I can't wait to see the trailer wheels power through some snow.
much respect from germany !
Love the project. Hope to see a project in the future to get the trailer pto to work
The PTO works well, just have to adjust and match the turning circles of the trailer and UTV so there's no binding.
Congratulations for the new trailer! Looks very sturdy during loading&unloading. Nice job!!!
Thanks man!
Muito boa performa-se da Maquina , como sempre parabéns Don, mais um projeto sensacional
Works well Donn ...Looking forward to your blocksplitter completion ..JR
It amazing how u built everything at home, really like the crane wish I have 1off that on my trailer
I bet your dreams didn't give you insights of the Trailer working any less than it did, beautifully built and worked Donn, congrats on another beauty for the farm labor saving tool!!
One thing is still missing... your 4x4 and the trailer up to the diffs in the mud and driving out as 8x8 in slow motion :D
Very surprised at how powerful and versatile it is, in such a compact size. Well done 👍
What a great build.
Hi Donn,
My compliments, absolutely fantastic!
You'll be warm this winter.
You deserve to put your feet up by the fire, and relax.
Thanks for the video my friend, take care.
And it's all for hearing how still working: "Hr-hr-hriiihgr" at backyard? Strong, bro!!! Waiting all wheel drive working at mud, snow.
Fantastic job Donn, works better than Pretty Good. Turned out great. Hope you can sell the plans for a good nest egg. I know you'll enjoy that around there for many many years to come. Thanks for sharing with us, we really enjoyed you over the years and you teaching us the fabrication skills you learned. Stay safe and keep up the great videos. Fred.
Nice. That should make getting the winter wood bit easier
I was impressed with the build. Now I'm even more impressed seeing it in action and how much weight it can handle.
Good job 👍👍👍Thank you for sharing. Be safe 🇨🇦
Hi donn just wanted to let you know that the equipment you got there is working real nice good job on building everything an awesome job cutting the tree down.
Well built!
For the binding, if Lego has taught me anything is that more universal joints fix the problem.
For the brush/branch problem just make some wooden panels that use the log dogs to hang off of or span between. You obviously have trees that are big enough to make the boards out of.
as usual a job done very well really great job very good really good if I had the right equipment I would try to build a trailer like this too, good really good job
Amazing machine, really impressive Donn 👍
Has it turned out exactly as you wanted? Or have you found anything you’d like to tweak or change? Looks perfect to me buddy 👌
I love the smell of chainsaw exhaust in the morning, it smells like victory! I'm very impressed with this build. I hope you bring us along for the modifications.
In total : PERFECT !!!!!!👍👍👍
Well done Donn Excellent
Works perfect!
Great video well done .
I just found your channel and cant get enough the amount of talent you have sr is staggering id love to have this set up first video i saw was the side by side build bravo 👏🏻 👍🏻
Thank you very much!
Really nice build Don 👍
the grip are a little shaky ,but i think that can easily be fixed with friction dampers,
a very professional wan that will serve you well in the forrest.
It's jmo but I'd like to be able to haul more branches in each load. 1] by changing the shape of the dogs to mirror the grappling hooks [narrower/much taller/3 per side] and 2] then add D-rings [2 per side], to use with the "speed or torque drive binders" that have an approx load limit of 5k to 13k lb ea. depending. Two on each side with a 3" to 4" strap *will* compress a trailer *"full"* of branches down considerably to make room for more. Just a thought. Btw, the reason for the "U-shaped dogs" would be to allow the branches to easily compress into that curved shape. Also, *I'm very glad I found this channel.*
That's freaking awesome!!! Kudos to the tenacity...If you added a side dump to that hauler, you'd be the fastest ever! Nice work.
Definitely works. I was hoping to see PTO drive of the trailer wheels to see if it tries to push the ATV off of turns.
There's probably a reason why no trailer manufacturers use PTO drive lol
Edit: timber trailer manufacturers
In such case axel could be replaced with hydraulic motor and control levers in cabin. Then apply power only when needed, otherwise free wheel.
If it's geared right it shouldn't be a problem. 8 wheel drive? It's not gonna get stuck. :)
Or maybe some clutch on PTO?
It only needs electromagnetic clutch or just lock. You hardly ever need all wheel drive. Only in conditions where wheelspin is inevitable and there such little difference makes no difference
Most logging trailers just have hydraulic motors that lock into the wheel threads which is rather poor and cheap design
Man that thing works awesome
Donn you need to build a short arm to attach to the side of the grapple hook so when you pick up logs you don’t have to be perfectly centered on the log and the short arm will leverage the log so it picks up more level. Great job a person would never know it wasn’t built in a factory. You have skills Sir.
No worries, getting the log balanced first try takes some practicing but later it's super easy.👍
You might want to put a plate over the turning hydrolic for a better place to stand on while operation the timber trailer.
Really really impressive 🤩👍
Donn - I have been watching this build with great interest. I want to do something similar (driven axle trailer with walking beam tandems) for forwarding small trees/poles, using gear drive Cub Cadet garden tractor parts (cheap and tough). Congrats on your successful build!
Regarding your improvement #3, I have a few ideas (some not so good, but I'll throw them out there, anyway!).
- add double Cardan or Birfield/Rzeppa joints at both ends of the drive shaft. I think I would try to salvage the constant velocity joints from a front wheel or all wheel drive car.
- add a swivelling carrier bearing somewhere in the middle, so you can put more Cardan joints in the driveline, to share the turn angle among more joints
- make a clutch which disengages the drive shaft at tight turn angles (maybe necessary at both ends of the shaft); this isn't so good, because you might need the trailer axle drive in a gnarly situation with tight turns!
- eliminate the mechanical driveshaft and replace it with a hydrostatic setup; two pumps/motors, plumbed together, probably with a reservoir to help keep the hydraulic oil cooler, but maybe just an inline cooler rated for pressure would work; only the hoses connecting the two motors need to make the bend
- make the trailer wheels steerable (probably counter steer, but maybe a crab steer mode would be a useful option); this would be cool, but would require a complete rebuild of the trailer, and salvaging a couple of front wheel drive axles from a light truck or something; this solution also gives up the option of using over-the-tire tracks for more flotation in soft mud or deep snow, and winter is usually logging season, at least where I live
Those are my "off the cuff" thoughts!
