It would be good to see the top of the tree to get a better picture of what you are doing. I was a tree feller in Scotland for nine years 1978-1987. When felling a conifer into a small gap between other conifers we would never aim for middle of gap as a hang up here might be very difficult to dislodge. We would aim slightly to one side to purposely hang up tree. We would then begin cutting the hinge from the side of the hang up and the spring of the upper branches would roll the tree off and into the gap. A very satisfying job.
What happened to rule #1 ? Never walk in front of a tree that has a backcut. I do not understand why you make such deep felling notches. That might work on the fir and birch trees you cut...but it forces you to have the back edge of your hinge so far back on larger trees that you run out of room for larger wedges when you need the extra lift.
Forced him to cut his holding wood on one side too which could have spun the whole thing. He should have completed that back cut before pounding the wedges in all the way. Scary work here; hope this guy stays safe.
Yeah, made it uncomfortable to look. Cut was too deep, backcut could of then gone further, then could of bigger wedged it over. Dangerous still, though
Textbook perfect takedown. There are too many in the comments who fail to understand that every problem were taken into consideration before the job started, there were no panic and the skills are just so above the average.
It absolutely wasn't. His rope was useless at that angle and he walked in front of a tree with a back cut in it and tried to pull it over while in the striking distance. Cutting through his holding wood the way he did could have ended catastrophically. I'm glad this man is okay but from a professionals standpoint, this is terrifying to watch.
@@ericjrparentHis rope obviously wasn't useless if it moved the tree. It was a lot more efficient than continuing to drive the wedges. I would have preferred to see him finish the back cut straight through though. (At that point the tree had a significant lean so there weren't many directions it could have gone.)
@@mattpeterson418 The rope didn't do much because of the narrow angle to the ground; of course, the lake being there meant he couldn't anchor it farther from the tree. Interesting that he cut the corners off so the tree would roll out of the hang-up. I would have made a deeper back-cut (shallower face), left the corners alone to direct the tree, and stacked long wedges in it, but maybe I just like pounding wedges. Another option would have been to use a loggers jack. OTH, looks like this guy is a pro and knew what would work.
I have about 450 acres of these trees in Spain, never cut one down for any reason, when its hot in summer l can walk around and its 15 degrees cooler. ground is clean all around the base and heaps of wildlife on to the property.
So far I have been very impressed with your work. But cutting down trees while people are walking around in the background - a security area - that's not possible at all. Sad.....

Every time I watch a felling vid and read the comments there are always a dozen or more people who will criticize every cut and every angle exercising their "I'm better than you. You're an idiot" muscle. I watch to learn, but apparently, according to the critics, no one is as good as each "armchair quarterback" and I should not do it "that way" or, at best, my teeth will fall out. 😭
Got away this time. In hindsight hould have made shallower wedge cut, moved wheelbarrow for more working room and had a second hand doing the pulling further downstream.
All the big ones scare the shit out of me... I find them terrifying when they're crowded or in a bad spot. But if I can clear out all their little buddies first, suddenly they don't look nearly as intimidating. Still scary but not as much...
Your technique is great and unusual here in the States. I think you see geometrically when falling. I would be unable to match that part. Where was your Stalpen? Much safer than the rope to the side. Great work!.
@@TonyTomblerone , perhaps he was a little extra careful for maximum safety and built-in control? We'll see your own videos appear soon, I understand? I know there is a lot of ego tripping in tree care! American videos enough!

He sure looked good! Has all the right gear on, and you can see him from across the pond! And after that mile deep notch, two wedges that didn't matter, he cut out any remaining hinge on both sides and rolled it off the stump to one side. The chain falls hooked to the weeds was a coin flip he lucked out on, could have gone either way. But the most bothersum was the stupid music!

Doesn't a deeper notch give you more leverage with a wedge change the tipping point a bit

A Humboldt is a good idea on a tree that might hang up.
A sizwheele notch on the side away from tbe building would have rolled the tree off of the one it hung up on, but none the less this was a success.
