I can't get enough of Ian - he talks legibly, in a normal voice and on interesting topics at great speed.
I came here to write something similar but you've already said it. Well said!
Can’t emphasise how important the ‘normal voice’ part is
imagine not being able to enjoy the rich tapestry of dialects albion has to offer
Spot on 👌🏼
Have just found the channel and completely agree, my new favourite 40k channel
And then... when we needed them most... they returned.
Deep Rock Galactic is proof that space dwarfs have a place in the univers and are here to stay.
*ROCK AND STONE!*
For KARL!
ROCK AND STONE BROTHER!
If you dont rock and stone, you ain't coming home.
A round of Glyphid Slammers, please!
It's wild to me that the only non-imperial, non-Chaos human faction of the game were just quietly disappeared from the playable army lineup entirely. It's such a huge obvious hole to fill.
well, according to the lore, the Imperium wipes out any and all non-imperial human factions, so it's even wilder that the Squats survived upto the 41st millenium, only to be destroyed by a random 'Nid splinter fleet.
@@paulyg405 They did hint at the Squats being rediscovered as recently as the 2020 Psychic Awakening codex.
My head cannon is that Perturabo and the iron fists are dwarfs. Seemed like that was the direction of the character that was a late change to the lore to me.
Squats have never gone away... Especially if you were to look in my house with my 40k army including land train, gyrocopters and colossus. We’ll be back with vengeance 🤘🏻🍻
*is so jealous* alais I got into 40k just after the release of 2nd ed, so missed out on being able to play a Squat force in 40k, but would still love to.
Perfect timing for UA-cam reccomendations
"Squat Deluge" sounds like a sickness armies contracted during victorian times.
Its a viral infection that occasionally afflicts eastern european armies after consumption of infected vodka
😂
Squat Deluge is what happens after a night of drinking followed by Taco Bell.
Every Squat Fan: "Squats lives!" *Stomp**Stomp*
I think squats as an independent faction of wandering nomads with good tech would be a nice spin on them that keeps them from being so closely tied to the fantasy dwarf archetype
I dunno - I liked 40K when it was basically Lord of the Rings in space. Nothing wrong with keeping that element!
Having elves, orks, ogres, halflings, demons, angels and beastmen is totally fine. But short stumpy hairy guys? What is this? Some kinda fantasy?
I think the reason behind dumping them, was they were basically imperial guard / with a bit of Space Marines mashed together. Other then being Dwarfs at the time they didn't feel "unique", granted GW then released Dark Eldar / Sisters of battle not long after.....
But that's literally the eldar...
Two years later, it turns out GW agreed with you. ;)
Ah , a brand new warhammer 40k lore channel with calm and informative content , almost as good as new born baby !
They are back...not an April fools and I'm looking forward to seeing the new fluff interpreted! I like that this channel talks about the real life reasons as well as fluff reasons for factions appearing or disappearing so I'm looking forward to a "why now?" once the dust settles.
I’d be happy if they added more “Unaligned” units that can be joined to factions without losing too many bonuses. Including Zoats, Men of Iron, Blackstone Constructs, and Stryxis. More minor xenos as mercenaries, maybe give the Kroot some more love.
And now they are back !
This is an excellent first video! Really enjoyed it :)
Your shout-out got me here. Very nice video!
Thanks, and thanks for sharing! I think there's a bit in one of your Codex Compliants where you say "people keep asking for Squats but we only do books on this channel". Um....that might have been a BIT of an inspiration! 🤩🤩🤩
@@ArbitorIan Oh wow, well we've very glad! Keep up the good work :)
Endorsed by Snipe & Wib?! Great start to the Channel!
Also, hi Snipe & Wib! 🖐️
Games Workshop has missed a big opportunity here, my young son has achondroplasia (a type of dwarfism ) and having heroic squats appearing even more would be fantastic for the confidence of many with all forms of dwarfism
I can remember in the 90's everyone wanted squats, I can still remember a guy who had a squat army he pieced together. I also love that they dropped squats because they didn't feel unique, and yet later on GW puts out dark eldar / sisters of battle. They could have come out with them, and they would have sold a hell of a a lot better then the dark eldar crap. I know right before I stopped playing, I was going to make a squat army using the Imperial guard rules. Converting the newly released plastic fantasy models at the time.
@@paulyg405 I mean I get it sure the Squats are just imp guard with a bit of space marine mashed in, and on the whole not really "unique". But what behind the scenes changed to then spit out emo goth Eldar, and the Girl Scout Marines. I mean not to hate on those, more choices are better in the game. But Dark Eldar felt to me, like someone's dark evil chaos worshiping Eldar craft world army. Something that should have been featured in a issue of White Dwarf to spark interest for kit bashing craft worlds.
And I completely forgot the Undead army, err wait the Necrons that came out too around this time. To be fair I liked the Necrons on the face of it, just was NOT a fan of the mini's
i have some good news for you
The loss of their homeworlds makes for a great story bend for the Squats to bring them back. Maybe they saw the Tyrannids coming, and launched a massive fleet that got lost in the Warp, and they'll emerge any day now as a minor faction. Homeless drifters bent on destroying Tyrannids, willing to sell their guns to anyone fighting against them.
I like it!
The 2nd edition Imperial Guard book references them and names Squats as potential allies. It also says that there is a Squat codex planned for release and that was 1995.
I think we might need an update video on Squats considering Leagues of Votann exist now.
I enlisted during the transition from second to third edition, and retired my armies toward the end of fourth. I'm still a massive fan of the lore, and have even cracked the doors to The Black Library in recent years.
When I stopped playing, I swore that I would only return to tabletop 40k when Squats did as well. The only thing, though... is that it is still the same old GW, and I really can't rationalize the financial cost of re-entry.
Nonetheless, Squats and primarchs coming back warms my heart, and here I am, an avid listener. ❤️
Hey man, you're doing really well at this. You're not highbrow and easy to follow for anyone, without dumbing anything down. Good on you for making a channel and sharing your information. Love
In 1994, I wrote to GW asking when the Squat Codex would be out. They wrote back and told me to expect it in 1996 😆
Yep, I can remember waiting for each new codex. With everyone wanting Squats, and guessing if it was the next one.
I remember an Eldar army in the early 90s and included a 'pirate' (Rogue Trader) unit which included a double pistol-wielding squat model in that unit. It was, AFIAK, one of the only ways to include some of these now unique units.
"Or-...squats ain't eva beaten, we just 'ave another go!"
This is so good, concise and well articulated plus great editing
as an out of touch old-timer... I loves me some vintage 40k talk.
Bought a box of primaris, so... getiing up to speed. Reading all the Horus heresy books has kept my hand in... Anyway, cool af channel, subscribed - Bless ya
(I had the 'mole mortar' from the devastators box... fun times)
Lovely to see a deep dive in Squats, it was my first 40k army I had as a kid. Loving the videos, keep up the good work.
really digging this stuff, I love digging into the actual history of Warhammer and its development over time. Also great editing and production value keep up the good work!
I have just been binge watching this guys videos recently. Very high standard videos. Even the intro/outro music is great! Keep it up!
Congratulations - this was an excellent first video! Well researched and informative. Squats are still my favorite 40K army!
Your knowledge and attention to detail is amazing.. this is exactly the kind of channel I was wishing for. A good place to explore the stuff surrounding 40k both in-universe and meta that you wouldn’t find in Lexicanum.
Just eating my lunch at work and Snipe and WIB sent me here and boy I’m glad I did. My first 40k models 32 years ago were Squat Herthguards. This really took me back. Thank you for sharing and subbed to your new channel. I watch with interest.
Great first video. Warmed my heart with nostalgia. Keep em coming 💪🏼
You gave me such a nostalgia buzz, so thank you for that, great video! I had squats back in '89 and this was great to see. I got a buzz out of seeing that box of plastic squats that I'd bought 3 of back in the day, when I went to Warhammer World, they have quite a few of the old box sets in their museum. You video really took me back to writing lists of them though, and flicking through the catalogues to decide what to buy. We didn't have a GW in my city until about 20 years ago, so we would often order mini's from our local 'alternative shop', which sold t-shirts, music stuff, but also all the rpgs we'd gotten into along with D&D. Great days, excuse the essay, but it really made me smile to watch this, thanks again :]
He made this just a year too early. If he’d made this in Late March of 2022 would’ve been so funny
They should bring them back. There's nothing wrong with Space Dwarves, and they'd be a great medium to explore crazy Dark Age of Technology weapons.
Amazing content! Been a big fan of the Demiurgs, have my own army, but never knew much about the Squats since I don't like landtrains and bikers. In 9 minutes you summed up everything I needed to know. Thank you !
I think Squats are working for a mining company fighting what looks like possibly Tyranides on Hoxxes :)
Great video! Loved learning about the squat history in GW games. I hope they come back in some form.
I bet Ian's happy today!
I remember rogue trader, brilliantly detailed skirmish game (bring it back etc) squats were mint, as were some of the other species of humanoid. Why didn't they do space skaven, everywhere humanoids go the rats follow. Potentially they could evolve. I recall that rogue trader had a points system which would facilitate this, or... well... anything really
Sent here by Snipe and Wib!
Really enjoyed the video and looking forward to watching more :-)
First video? Nice work. Looking forward to what you put out in the future!
new subscriber and glad i managed to catch your videos. as much as i own a pile of shame i dont have the time or people i know who to play with , seem to just watch videos relating to the whole 40k universe . so this is great take care
Ian, your channel is fantastic mate. Keep it up.
Great video. I still fondly remember my ridiculously massive ~10,000 point 2ed Squat army from back in the day. Good times.
Ha! I just commented earlier today under one of your other videos that the Squats/space dwarves were a big part of 40K in the original Rogue Trader and early years, but I didn’t know if they were even still in it any more. And let’s face it, the early version was really Lord of the Rings in space, as early Fantasy was really a LoTR tabletop battle game that was just different enough not to be sued 😂. Any way - great to find your content after getting back into the lore and novels after a 30 odd year hiatus from the franchise. Subbed!
And I had that White Dwarf! Awesome man!
Great first vid! Looking forwards to more :)
Just started watching today after getting a hankering for 40k lore
Great videos, will be subscribing and watching many more
SQUATS HAVE RETURNED!!!
Here we are a little over a year later and SQUATS ARE BACK!!!
Totally forgot Squats could take IG Commissars and human Techpriests as Advisors...hopefully they bring that back - would make Commissars maybe useful...and be very fluffy!
Decendants of miners who settled near the galactic core.
Well, I guess the Votaan arent as hard a retcon as I though they were.
Squats are back! Need a reaction video Ian ASAP :-)
Thanks for the well researched video! Would love to see comprehensive videos about Inquisitor 54mm, Finecast, and all GW history really!
THEYRE BACK BABY
Less than 30 seconds on your video and I like and subscribe you got a good vibe dude
Hopefully the new teaser released today brings them back
I have some good news for you.
Snipe and Wib sent me. Great vid, subbed
This ball-like exo-armor squat is unbelievable beautiful piece of mini! I Love It!
Very, very nice video. Great. Now I feel the strong urge to buy some Kharadron Overlords and field them as a count-as Tempestus Scions army. Thanks for that hobby-brainworm, Ian.
Keep the lore coming i like your style
When kill team Leage of Votann comes out I was thinking of make them look like the 7 dwarf’s from Snow White.
Got into Games Workshop stuff in the late 1990's/early 2000's, when the Squats had been discontinued from regular 40K but were playable in Epic if I remember correctly. In any case, back then there were plenty of people who remembered Squants fondly but I never had access to much of the surrounding fluff so this video clears up quite a bit of confusion. Many thanks for posting this!
Very nice video sir. Learnt a lot
Yay thanks snipe and wib for pointing me this way....... now only to convince him that 40k and fantasy connection is still canon. Sigmar is the lost primarch 😬
No intention of ever playing HH but this was still absolute geek food for me ...keep doing what you're doing Ian :)
omg the commissar at 4:51 is from Turbonegro xD
super interesting and nice content, by the way!
Well, sounds like GW watched your vid and decided to bring them back!
Yes man, great job explaining, telling and sharing the Warhammer 40 k lore, you should also do some series for the Warhammer fantasy setting, keep it up, nice content
Snipe and Wib sent me here! Subbed, my dude!
Came here because of Snipe and Wib's recommendation; staying here because of the content :)
Me too
Same! 40k has such a long and rich history, it’s fascinating hearing about the early days
Loving the channel
Love your style!
Cool video. Just watched on Warhammer Plus hammer and Bolter - Artefacts and at 16:37 there is a Squat in the Necron Collection.
Great vid. One thing you missed. They were also in the 2nd Ed expansion: Dark Millenium, where you had Ancestor Lord psychic powers.
No dislikes, as it should be.
Honestly, I was born too late for squats, but I want em in modern 40k. Nice and refreshing homebrew might go down well :)
Have Iron Bonce but never knew about shorty, Just grabbed 'em of eBay, Thanks Ian! :D
Will paint them up eventually so he can stand with my LE6 Space Santa!
I always understood it that what squats didn't die during the Horus Heresy went into hiding in enclaves.
Good vid, I loved squats when they first came out I just wish I had bought more :)
We need a tv show where a squat, an Eldar and an Ork go on adventures together.
I really enjoyed playing Rogue Trader and second edition, but never had any squats (Just the Mole Morter and the Thudd Gun which I later painted and sold off to a squat player). However, Squats easily became one of my favorite armies when building them for Epic. While painting the infantry was a chore, the vehicles were just fun as heck to build and field.
I miss Epic.
EPIC was the game I started with. I'm right there with you.
Must be elated that the Squats got that rebrand glow-up as the LoV huh?
THEYRE BACK
The only critism i have and its extremly minor. And likely not alot of others are going to notice. But your dialog has a very very slight echo. Its giving your Ts a sharp tick sound. Its a studio thing i think. You should think about sticking a piece of thick foam behind your mic.
Thanks! Always up for tips, especially simple fixes like that. Although, given how much I spoke to a camera the other day, it's gonna be about seven videos before that gets better!
Re: the prevailance of dwarves in oldhammer.
Speaking from experience - Dwarves/Squats are easier to sculpt than humans. Dwarves are alot more 'forgiving' to the human eye and brain in terms of proportional mistakes. You can do a dwarf fairly simply, infact my second complete sculpt was a fantasy football dwarf. The beard can hide a multitude of mistakes and hair/fur is usually the first thing people learn to sculpt. Secondly the belly and the short legs means you don't need to caliper out the thigh to the knee, knee to the heel, on the armature, like you do with humans. A rough, hip to foot, guess is enough. Great video.
I love the old hammer nostalgia stuff.
2022 called...
They are back :D
Would love to see a video like this on the old genestealer cults
I was an epic player and remember the launch of all of the Squal vehicles like the land train. Such a shame that they were dropped.
Same. Happy days…
love ur vids man.
i know jervis gave the reason why they got rid of squats, but this always made me think of their wasted potential. I always thought of them as intergalactic bikers. The hells angels of the many galaxies riding around on their hogs and listening to kyuss and orange goblin. That wouldve been cool...
wild how on april fools we got an entirely serious trailer for new squats.
Excellent video. I have to go now and fetch my Squats from the Imperial Guard units they have been conscripted into and make a 2nd Ed list.
Squats and Ratlings still live on in my heart.
ratlings still exist
As do squats - see necromunda
Just imagine if Vulcan ends up being found on a Squat core world building war machines for the Imperium...
Squats need a new plastic army box like the Sisters of Battle. I’d buy 10! Great vid! Subscribed.
Great vid, I subbed a minute in
I don’t know why but I love that artwork of the commissar advisor
They're back bay-beee!
one small thing you missed - there were squat psychic powers and vehicle cards in Dark Millennium, the expansion box set for 2nd edition 40k :)
Really appreciated this vid. I am quite partial to dwarves in all my fluff be it from WOW to AOS to D&D. One of the main reason i couldnt stick to FFIV was for lack of grumpy gruffy bearded folk :(
