Great video glad to see you using a 2 handed rod again.
After watching you switch hands everytime you have to reel I'm very glad my father set up my rod the way that he did when I was a kid. We cast with our right hand and reel with our left. Alot of guys out there don't and do the switch the same way that you do. It would undoubtedly feel strange to you if you tried to switch at this point but if you ever have the opportunity to teach a young person do them a favor and do it the way that I do. It's way better.
Hi Tom, great vid, thanks. Please could you do a piece here to explain the logic of using a 12lb leader in your setup when the average salmon in this river is 17 to 2lbs? And also, as C&R is the practice, why barbed hooks are used? Thanks.
the 12 lb leader is due to clear water, the fish can be leader shy if too heavy. however, you can fight a salmon in quickly with this test of leader. they are using barbless hooks more and more now, good point
@@newflyfisher Did the law change? I was called ashore by DFO wardens earlier this year so they could verify that I was only using unweighted single barbless hooks. All my barbs are pinched down of course... but they told me that the fly I was fishing was only marginally compliant in that regard. Is it conceivable that for-profit lodges and riparian leases are tacitly self-regulating?
I double-checked with the fishing regs: Barbed hooks for atlantic salmon are DEFINITELY prohibited in all of Atlantic Canada. So these flies shown in the vid could not have been used as-is. The use of double hooks might be permitted now; the previous stipulation of 'a single hook' in the old regs was vague and perhaps misleading.
Re tippet strength, this is the first I've heard of anyone using over 8lb test except during the spring freshet. Personally I almost always use 6lb. If the fish is a big multiple-spawner, then I'll want to break it off if I can't bring it to hand in 10 or 15mins max. This is particularly important in warmer water. Also, a thinner tippet sinks faster and affords more enticing fly action.

usually sizes 2 to 10, depending upon time of year and water conditions. guides will give you advice on this

I find myself saying all the time that I wish I had enough money to get somewhere like this but I've only just realized that saying that won't get me any money and not having any money won't end up with me going salmon fishing

And let people harvest reasonably. I pitched in a couple hundred for a guide for steelhead one time (Mad River Outfitters). When I caught one, the guide 13:40 told me they don’t allow keeping the fish. Mind you this was public water. Not sure what kind of contradictory, hippie feel good crap that is. I told him his guiding (spot showing) has been fulfilled.
