As an arcade rat myself, I really enjoy these N64 ports of the coin-op originals. While there's unquestionably some sacrifices/compromises that were made to get the games running, they still feel close enough to the arcade to make them playable. Exotica is a tough nut to crack, even on Easy settings. I do like the progression system, unlocking rewards based on how many miles you've driven. It increases replay value over many other coin-op ports.
I thought I was the only one who actually likes these games. I used to play these in the arcades in the 90's and while the N64 versions aren't quite as good they still trigger that nostalgia that makes me want to keep playing. I really enjoyed the car green screen visuals. Good work.
i absolutely love the cruis'n series and think they're completely timeless. i think the only reason they suffered by many critics' standards is that they came out of the time when games - particularly arcade games - still weren't afraid to just be unabashed arcade games without trying to go for zomg photorealism, but all critics wanted in the n64/psx era was zomg moar realism. really, as arcade ports, they're outstanding, and for the most part completely faithful to the original arcade versions. and despite the draw distance, the colorful graphical style and many of the textures are actually quite good. the series just came out at a time when the whole fully over-the-top dumb fun arcade experience was losing its luster with the crotchety critic crowd, i think. i've rarely met someone who isn't a video game critic who doesn't still love this series. the games are just fun to play, and graphically, for any flaws they may have, they're still far more interesting and fun to look at than many of the other generic car carers that graced that era of console. cruis'n usa was the first game i bought for my n64 and i didn't care what any of the critics were saying - for me it was just awesome to have such a properly represented 3d arcade experience - one i'd been loving for a few years already wherever i could find the arcade machine - on a home console. it felt like my long wait for the "ultra 64" advertised in the arcade version was finally over and totally worth it, and i played the shit out of that game for months, leveling up all my cars and beating it on every difficulty. it's just classic fun and, imho, holds up better from a pure gameplay standpoint than almost any other racer of that era or prior. but of course the critics still just want every car racing game to be like gran turismo or else it sucks. d-:
+Lars “B” Amble [Try4ce] Heh, yeah, that was definitely an interesting time in gaming, because silly fun games were in an odd position. It's crazy how times have changed, and now dumb fun, smaller experiences, and simple graphics are highly praised again.
+Lars “B” Amble WELL SAID!! It does seem like gaming went in that direction! Arcade racers are incredibly hard to come by nowadays, even the Burnout series has completely vanished, in favor of pretty tiresom hyper-realistic sim racers and all this open world car modding stuff, the closest you get to this stuff now is Mario Kart. It's pretty interesting though, I'd say SEGA pretty much killed off arcades by having the arcade experience come home with the Mega Drive/Genesis, but once arcades went out of fashion, arcade-style games did too - the Nintendo 64 in particular seemed to be pushing heavier, more intense and either realistic or feature-heavy games so people would get the most out of the price of the cartridge, and funnily enough, the SEGA Saturn, which was hugely focused on arcade-style gaming, performed terribly. I do think you're right; that era was a shift away from arcade gaming and towards heavier experiences (I suppose the simpler games all went onto the Game Boy at that time), but the revival a couple of generations later, in the form of Xbox Live Arcade, proved that it there's still a place for it.
@@anthonya.jumelles7103 Well it's not necessarily about how well the game did in sales that is being pointed at here, because the Cruisn series also did very well in sales on the N64. It was really the critics and what was being praised the most at the time was shifting away from games like Rush and Cruisn. They still did well with sales, which shows a lot of people still enjoyed them, but it wasn't the hype anymore and people in large favored much more in depth games with more realistic graphics and physics. Why wouldn't they? It's not a criticism I don't think, it's just an interesting look into how things were moving at that time, and why we don't have as many of these arcade racers these days. I think cruis'n blast is one of the few recent released game of this nature (on the nintendo switch) and I believe it's doing very well. I highly doubt this means people will begin to create new games of this nature, because the cruisn series, i'm sure, knows a lot of this is being driven by nostalgia.
I loved the Cruis'n games back in the N64 games, and I even picked up the Wii one, which is surprisingly fun, (though the graphics are terrible). Apparently the development team made an arcade game of the Fast & Furious franchise based on the Cruis'n engine, then later ported that game to the Wii, removed the F&F license and reverted it to a Cruis'n game. As a result it's complete with all the classic Cruis'n features (the exact same set of tricks from Cruis'n Exotica and the same presentation, right down to the flat sprites of humans at the start and finish lines, and the bikini girl with the trophy), along with some new Fast & Furious inspired 'street racing' stuff, such as nitrous boosting and vehicle modding. If you're a fan of the Cruis'n series on N64 and can live with (surprisingly good, very twitchy, high sensitivity) Wii style tilt controls, I'd highly recommend it! Just be aware of the low budget, it's very obvious.
I got it and love it! This arcade racing series is a breath of fresh air in a sea of realistic racing sims. Because of this IMHO, I believe the series has aged very well.
@@MIAMI_VIBES_ ok cool! So as a game World is better than Exotica (on the 64)? I’m thinking of buying one of them. But from the footage Exotica seems like more weird fun to me than World, but maybe when you play it, it’s different? Why do you prefer World? I understand exotica is a bad port compared to the arcade, but as a game on its own, is it worse than World? Would like to hear your advice :)
I used to play Cruis´n World a lot in the arcades, the lack of realism made me love the game, I hate driving simulators. The n64 version suffers from some framerate problems, but it´s fun too.
The arcade of the first game was at the local bowling alley in my teens. I played it and used a cheat code I found in a cheat magazine which was imported from USA by the local mag store. The cheat code let you use different vehicles by pressing a camera button while selecting. I picked the school bus.
[Try4ce] Yeah! I definitely remember the school bus being the way to go. I forget how you get it on the N64 version, but we used it a lot on my friend's copy of the game.
Cruis'n USA was my 1st game for N64 and it was amazing. All the friends come to me and we play all the day and night. I still don't understand why people calling it a bad game ?
Fun Fact: Toaster Strudels instantly remind me of playing Cruisin' USA. That was my favorite snack and I must have been playing a ton of N64, specifically Cruisin' USA. One of the most strongest smell to memory links I have, I think. lol
I'm gonna buy some right now because I'm an adult now and I can have them whenever I want! I'm gonna get every flavor, who's gonna stop me!? Ah hahahaha!
I remember when Crusin World was about to come out. I pre-ordered it and marked down the days till it came out on my calendar in the 6th grade. Still probably my favorite racing game of all time. I played Cruisin USA first and then Crusin World in the arcade originally and loved it. It seemed like the best game ever for the cars and the fact you can run over kangaroos (yeah for some reason that really appealed to me.) I was obsessed with cars and especially Hummers at the time as well.
Thanks to late night laundromat runs for like 15+ years, the demo that the sit-in arcade machine of Cruisin' USA runs loudly on a loop is forever etched in my mind. The funny part of this story is when eventually found an N64 for my collection, Cruisin' USA was right there in the box with a few other games.
I actually skipped out of Cruis'n USA for the N64 because I heard it was a bad port with bad pop up and twitchy controls. After looking an a video of the arcade version I saw it was actually really close to the arcade which was pretty amazing considering the difference in the price of the hardware. I also played it with the N64 Ascii Wheel and the game became much more playable. I now have all the games in the series including the Wii game. Definitely a fun arcade game series IMHO has aged very well in this time of hyper realistic racing sims. Great job!
The Cruisin Series Was some of best fun when it comes to arcade racer being ported over to the n64 however all 3 games had Framerate problems with cruisin usa being an Really bad port but was somewhat fun,Cruisin World is the best of them all a near perfect Port with added features such as The Circuit races and actually upgrading your car, cruisin Exotica was very fun also with added features but some songs from arcade version were removed from the n64 version for whatever reason I still remember that Ridicolus glitch on the india Course where at the end you hit an invisible wall and spin out but overall fun game
I love the Crusin' series from the arcades. The sheer fact it doesn't take itself seriously, and goes boldly in the direction of pure insanity, is what I love best about Crusin'. It's kind of what also makes it kind of a unique series. It tends to find ways to be even more silly and arcade-like than other surrounding racers like the Rush series, or Outrun. I'm so glad to see that, while I thought the series was kind of dead, that it is still quite alive and Blast looks incredible. It looks like it is doing with Cars what H2Overdrive does for boats. It always seems that, for whatever time a new Crusin' game comes out, it often looks at what over-the-top antics other arcade racers may achieve, and proceeds to top that.
You guys should do a video with Arcade to home console connectivity like they did with some n64 games and at least one gamecube game. If I remember right I think you could bring your memory card to the arcade and connect to Cruisn Usa, Nfl Blitz, one other game and then later Fzero AX. There might be others but it's hard finding much info on the subject.
I can definitely recommend anyone who has an n64 or can emulate n64 games to give this series a playthrough. Its very shallow but very entertaining 90s arcade racing fun
You should do a video on the Rush series. Especially Rush 2049 because that has to be my favorite 64 game of all time! I would love to get you take on it. Thanks!
+Eric Van Horne [Try4ce] Man, I loved renting the first Rush back in the day. I tried to get back into it a few years ago and it was pretty tough. I played a little 2049 recently, and it seemed cool, I'd like to try it out some more.
Rush 2049 is great, but the Dreamcast version is my favorite way to play it. There is an arcade collection on Gamecube with it, but Dreamcast is my favorite.
Oh wow, that was Burnout Paradise in the beginning! I love that game, but you have to bind the higher up view, to the same button as the gas, so that you can see more than 2 feet in front of you.
It’s worth noting that the N64 version actually plays a lot different than the original arcade version. I recently picked up an Exotica cabinet, and I prefer how it plays on the arcade, but that’s just personal preference. I big difference is that you can turn while flipping in the air on the 64, but in the arcades when you flip you can only go straight.
If you're ever in an arcade make sure you check out the Fast and The Furious games from Raw Thrills. Some of the guys who made the first three Crusin' games work there now and their a lot like the originals. They made a "kinda" port on the Wii just titled, "Crusin" which got destroyed by the critics but it's still a dumb, fun racer.
[Try4ce] I nearly forgot about this game (and the Game Boy game), so I had to be careful in the script to not call Exotica the "final" Cruis'n game like I almost did. I knew that the Wii Cruis'n game wasn't strictly a Cruis'n game in origin, but I didn't know that they were made by some of the same people. My curiosity might have to be sated someday.
***** If you're also a fan of Hydro Thunder, you've got to check out Specular Interactive's H20verdive and Dirty Drivin'. They also made the current Batman arcade racer. Their made up of ex Midway guys that did Crusin' and Hydro Thunder back in the day. My real hope is that Disney gives them the Wreck-it Ralph license to make a REAL Sugar Rush arcade game. Not a lazy XBox to Arcade Port that they did with Cars 2.
For my "stupid racing game" money, none beats Rush 2049. A game where your car has retractable wings? Hell yes. I remember my friends and I played that one summer from when we woke up until our parents came home from work. Everyday. For a whole week. It can be harder to find now, I don't think it was very popular. Still worth $10 bucks just for the stunt arena modes.
I always loved crusin usa, it was the first n64 game and the only game I had for a couple months before I got mortal kombat trilogy, I thought the graphics and gameplay were amazing, coming from having a snes and genesis, crusin usa looked amazing
Cruisin has always been a guilty pleasure if mine. Even when it came out I knew or wasn't great but it still had charm and was fun in short play settings.
I was a huge fan of Cruis'n Series that I started playing Cruis'n Exotica at Chuck E Cheese I really run when I was a 7 year old child since 2008. Cruis'n Exotica on N64 was best port from arcade. I play Cruis'n Blast I play it at Woodfield Mall Arcade and now I had Switch Port that I got for christmas gift since December 2021.
@@mylifeingaming I just looked it up. Cool isn't it? I miss the digitised sprites but the graphics don't look too bad and what better developers to bring it back than people who specialise in arcade development. Now if they could only port all the games to other platforms like PC... 😊
I wish the physics were slightly better, but I lost a lot of games and my n64 console itself, so I really am getting back into these games. I've always liked the speed and the scenery--- even though its not high resolution. I really want to bring back those memories also.
That's a good lookback at the Cruis'n series. I used to rent these games any chance I got. Would love to play these games again. BUT DAMMIT TRY! EYES ON THE ROAD!
I recently fell in love with California Speed, Atari Games' 'Cruis'n' game, which I'd skipped back in the day because I didn't think I cared for the series at all. Of course it got me into playing *all* of them. I think I've finally got it all out of my system now that I've moved on to the considerably heavier Rush 2, which I'd also skipped BITD. My Framemeister doesn't seem to like Exotica's transitions between menus and game, but otherwise I've had a blast with these slightly guilty pleasures.
If you think the Crusin' series was insanity in a cartridge, wait until you get a load of Beetle Adventure Racing! :P That being said, both series were very fun in my opinion and I wouldn't hesitate to play them again.
Omg yes they were! The game was fun enough to tolerate it but I think they could've made do with all tracks being one good lap instead of three stretched out laps. All in all though, a nice game on the N64. :)
I played a bit of Cruisin Exotica in pizza/arcade place as a kid. And man was it brutally hard. But i did enjoy its sister game Off Road Challenge a lot more, which also had an N64 port
You should really keep your eyes on the road while driving. At 1:11 you take a turn with out even looking to your left to see if there is on coming traffic. NOT A BLOOPER!
I always liked the Cruis'n series. I just recently saw Cruis'n blast the newest game in the series at a arcade, the cabinet looks bad ass but I didn't have any money at the time to play it. Next time I'll give it a shot.
You guys should consider covering Daytona USA! AM2 Sega games were quality, and Daytona really rocked the arcades with those stunning, smooth 3D graphics on that too-powerful-for-home-consoles Model 2 board.
I loved playing this game (Cruis'n World) as a kid! Didn't expect to a video of it, I have almost never seen discussion of the series online. Is i So that was a pleasant surprise. Is it true you have to earn 9999 points in order to go to the moon?
[Try4ce] Thanks! I don't think there's a requirement for going to the moon, at least not on the N64. I went there without expending any special effort.
+My Life in Gaming I looked it up, and apparently you simply need to finish the Cruise the World mode. Huh. I wonder why I never got it when I was younger! Earning 9,999 points seemingly unlocks the best car in the game, but that seems a little dubious to me. Anyway, merry christmas!
[Try4ce] I don't recall ever saying anything in this video other than that I kinda love these games? I'm not a big racing game fan, but this is one of the series I love. Got Cruis'n Blast day one last week.
[Try4ce] Oh I never said it was definitive, but as far as "cars" go, I guess I like it the best. All of those games you listed are "better," for sure, but just not what I decided to talk about for this episode.
I learned from this video that riding in a car with Try must be absolutely terrifying.
Really dig this series, switch your mind off and play - it's a blast
I read this in your voice.

If you're also a fan of Hydro Thunder, you've got to check out Specular Interactive's H20verdive and Dirty Drivin'.
I always preferred the Rush series on the N64, (and Arcades) but Cruis'n is pretty fun for sure.
The regular San Francisco Rush for the N64 is also the only half-decent port of the arcade to date.
Funny how Cruis’n Blast got announced for Switch and this video get recommended
What a cool way to drive a car
I just finished Exotica 100%, and it was I pretty fun experience. The game is way better than what I saw on reviews over the internet.
Forget the games, this guy is a phenomenal driver! Doesn't even need to look at the road!
I always loved crusin usa, it was the first n64 game and the only game I had for a couple months before I got mortal kombat trilogy, I thought the graphics and gameplay were amazing, coming from having a snes and genesis, crusin usa looked amazing
Great Episode! I was lucky enough to play the first game of the series in the arcade, and it was fun
Love the old games. More than today’s. Awesome video.
Big thanks for doing this. My son and me love Cruis'n USA on the N64.
Cruisin has always been a guilty pleasure if mine. Even when it came out I knew or wasn't great but it still had charm and was fun in short play settings.
i really like this channel :D
I was a huge fan of Cruis'n Series that I started playing Cruis'n Exotica at Chuck E Cheese I really run when I was a 7 year old child since 2008. Cruis'n Exotica on N64 was best port from arcade. I play Cruis'n Blast I play it at Woodfield Mall Arcade and now I had Switch Port that I got for christmas gift since December 2021.
All the funky and weirdness is the reason I play this game all day
Great series. I hope they bring it back one day.
[Try4ce] They did! Cruis'n Blast released on Switch heard a couple of months ago!
Oh my god the green screen animation is beautiful.
That train part is still so awesome
Great video buddy!
That's a good lookback at the Cruis'n series. I used to rent these games any chance I got. Would love to play these games again. BUT DAMMIT TRY! EYES ON THE ROAD!
Well looks like I need some Exotica
I recently fell in love with California Speed, Atari Games' 'Cruis'n' game, which I'd skipped back in the day because I didn't think I cared for the series at all. Of course it got me into playing *all* of them. I think I've finally got it all out of my system now that I've moved on to the considerably heavier Rush 2, which I'd also skipped BITD. My Framemeister doesn't seem to like Exotica's transitions between menus and game, but otherwise I've had a blast with these slightly guilty pleasures.
Have you ever tried California Speed? Is another really crazy arcade racer like the Cruis'n series for the N64. Check it out. :)
[Try4ce] I think I've probably played it at least a tiny bit in the arcade, but I can't remember for sure... I'll have to consider giving it a look!
If you think the Crusin' series was insanity in a cartridge, wait until you get a load of Beetle Adventure Racing! :P That being said, both series were very fun in my opinion and I wouldn't hesitate to play them again.
SkyScourgeGod BARs races were sooooo long.
Omg yes they were! The game was fun enough to tolerate it but I think they could've made do with all tracks being one good lap instead of three stretched out laps. All in all though, a nice game on the N64. :)
not sure how you can drive and talk about these games at the same time but i like it!
Great episode, one of the best
I used to rent Cruisin: Exotica and Cruisin' USA all the time. Especially to flip cars!
Don't forget "Off Road Challenge" -- the unofficial 4th game in the Cruis'n series on the N64.
I played a bit of Cruisin Exotica in pizza/arcade place as a kid. And man was it brutally hard. But i did enjoy its sister game Off Road Challenge a lot more, which also had an N64 port
California speed tho :)
Looks DAMN FUN tbh!!! Hope they bring out a new gen/PC version soon!!
0:14 WATCH THE ROAD!!!
I loved these games as a kid! Gotta get them for my modded Wii emulator
Crusin' USA port for N64 was TRASSHHHHHH!!!!
Cruis'n Exotica 64 is my favorite racing game, my friend José got a copy that was his dad's, and I liked it so much hat I bought a copy for myself
Glad I subbed!!!
crusin world easily has my favorite intro
CRUSIN' WAY! CRUSIN' USA AY!
I love how you filmed in your actual car, but are actually going through a car wash, not on the road!
You should really keep your eyes on the road while driving. At 1:11 you take a turn with out even looking to your left to see if there is on coming traffic. NOT A BLOOPER!
He also made that turn without turning the wheel. :P
So they are pretty much wackier versions of Outrun.
Great video as always!
Recently I was in a Arcade and played the newest game...Good but London though... I clipped out of bounds 2-3 times.
Now they brought it back with cruisn blast
You're insane. Crusin is easily one of the best and fun racing video games series ever. Way better than other bland racing games.
[Try4ce] I don't recall ever saying anything in this video other than that I kinda love these games? I'm not a big racing game fan, but this is one of the series I love. Got Cruis'n Blast day one last week.
@@mylifeingaming LOL, I read his comment as meaning a compliment. insane meaning crazy cool! "dude, that was insane!"
Love the crusin games!!
EYES ON THE ROAD, MAN! EYES ON THE ROAD!
The Cruisin' series is fast paced, fun music and lots of fun.
I recently stumbled on cruisin exotica love it
Cruis'n - 25th Anniversary Edition (1994-2019)
I have this game. Playing it now
We need these all on switch..and road rash!!!
"N64 Racing Games for 5 Bucks!"
Those where the Days......
CRRRUIS'N, YEEeeeyeEEeaahhh.....
Cruis'n USA.
*YEAH.*
Would love to see you guys do something about the F-Zero games!
Driving the car lol
scotty I didn't know you had another channel.
I long for the day we see Arcade1Up make a arcade cabinet to include the arcade version of Cruis'n USA, Cruis'n World, and Cruis'n Exotica.
And Rush 1, 2, and 3
I beg to differ on definitive N64 racing experience imo those are
-Diddy Kong Racing
-Waverace 64
-Mario Kart 64
[Try4ce] Oh I never said it was definitive, but as far as "cars" go, I guess I like it the best. All of those games you listed are "better," for sure, but just not what I decided to talk about for this episode.
beetle adventure racing is the best
I had no idea there was a 3rd game
Woo! Indiana!
"apple-ah-CHIA" lmao
These games got very poor reviews back in the day. However, I played them years later and found them to be fun.
How'd u make that turn without turning the steering wheel?
How did you becoming a guilable You Tube Commenter?
